Warriors on the Water Ltd. to host free event
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDWarriorson the Water Ltd. will hold a free event to celebrate veterans and first responders on Saturday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will include a variety of food, live music, games and activities, and it will be hosted at Jim Neary’s Live Bait and Tackle, 212 Spruce Grove Road, Kirkwood.
The selection of food that will be offered by Warriors on the Water Ltd. will include a pig roast, hamburgers and hot dogs, all of which has been donated by local businesses. Games, face painting and an arts and crafts table will be available to children throughout the day.
Several nonprofit organizations will be in attendance, including Heroes on the Water, the Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Canine Partners for Life and Woerth It Hollow. Each organization will answer questions and provide information on the respective service that it offers, such as fly fishing, kayaking, canine companions and equine therapy. Jim Neary’s Live Bait and Tackle will offer free boat rentals and equip participants with rods and bait during the event.
“We’re really proud to feature other nonprofits during the day. Our belief is that we’re stronger as a community,” said Gina Neary, founder of Warriors on the Water Ltd. “Whether you’re a veteran or not, you can come show your support and have a good time with your family.” Each veteran, first responder and active member of the military will receive a free gift bag at the event, which will include a gift card that has been donated by a local business.
Gina first organized the event in 2019 and continued to hold a smallscale version of it during the
The basis of navigating grief
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDBrothers and Sisters in Support (BASIS) is a grief support ministry for parents who have lost children. The program is a branch of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), an organization that provides assistance and training services to churches and schools for those with special needs. BASIS operates seven different support groups, one of which is located in Quarryville and also serves families from Pequea, Lampeter-Strasburg and other parts of the Southern End.
The Southern End group meets on the second Tuesday of every month and begins each session with a small devotion. Then, group leaders offer booklets and information on a topic that relates to mourning the loss of a child, with the materials often based in Scripture. For the rest of the meeting, which is generally one to two hours long, participants may ask questions and have an open discussion to share about their personal journey and struggles with loss.
COVID-19 pandemic in compliance with safety protocols. She said that this year will be the first event since before the pandemic that it will return in full force. “We’re excited for this year now that restrictions have been lifted and we can get back to normal,” Gina added. “We want to let everyone know that we’re here and invite them to come see the lake and what we’re all about.”
Warriors on the Water Ltd. was officially founded in 2018, although Gina and her husband, Jim, have been looking for ways to support veterans for more than 20 years. Jim is a Marine Corps veteran himself and began offering free boat rentals and recreational activities for other veterans at the Octoraro Reservoir. Gina created Warriors on the Water Ltd. as a way to raise funds and plan events to support
veterans in the community. The nonprofit organization also coordinates community meals at veterans’ retirement homes throughout the year.
“We want people to come out and take advantage of the beautiful lake and the peace here,” Gina said. “Being able to go fishing or kayaking on the lake for the day can be very healing. In this day and age, people need a place to go and relax.”
BASIS also seeks to provide support for grieving parents beyond its monthly meetings. The group accepts contact information for those who wish to speak or pray on the phone and mails out informational literature from its library. The group supports parents for up to five years by sending notes of encouragement on significant dates such as the birthday of a loved one and the anniversary of a loss. Once a year, BASIS hosts a free breakfast for parents, which includes a guest speaker.
“People can come just to listen. It’s a confidential and safe place,” said Dan Steinman, director of BASIS. “It doesn’t matter if you go to church or not. People come to share where they’re at, open up and say exactly how they feel.”

Dan and his wife, Phyllis, became participants of BASIS six years ago after the loss of their son. Although Dan refrained from attending the meetings at first, he eventually joined his wife in participating in the meetings, and says that it changed his life. “As a parent who has lost a child, a lot of things go through your mind,” Dan added. “I heard stories when I first went and understood what others were going through.”
Shortly after becoming involved with BASIS, Dan left his job to work for the ministry. He noticed that BASIS did not have a support group based in the Southern End, and he decided to start one. Dan became director of BASIS last year. “Parents never forget, but you can’t dwell on it. You have to have hope,” Dan said. “We can be a light for other people.”

Martial
Lancaster Wing Chun, a local martial arts training center, is celebrating its one-year anniversary.
An official Wing Chun training center, the facility has direct ties to Great Grandmaster Ip Man, the teacher of Bruce Lee, who is credited with popularizing the marital art style.
Ip Man was born in Foshan, China, on Oct. 1, 1893. During his life, one of the students he passed his knowledge to was his son, Grandmaster Ip Chun, who will celebrate his 99th birthday this July. In turn, Ip Chun passed along what his father taught him to Lancaster Wing Chun’s Master Colin Ward of the Northern Wing
center marks first
Chun Kung Fu Association (NWCKFA). Ward established the Lancaster Wing Chun Association on April 15, 2022, to create a place where people can learn traditional Ip Man Kung Fu in a safe and supportive environment.
Wing Chun is one of the few martial art systems to be invented by a woman. It is designed for a smaller, weaker individual to overpower a larger, stronger opponent by effectively utilizing centerline theory, speed and power.
The center emphasizes creating a safe environment where Wing Chun theory and techniques can be learned and applied. The goal is for attendees to learn the mechanics of
self-defense and how to deescalate and even walk away from a conflict. Wing Chun emphasizes calmness and relaxation to avoid a fight as its highest priority. However, in the event that avoidance and de-escalation strategies fail, participants also learn techniques for self-defense to minimize personal injury.
The style has been learned by both males and females from a young age, but it continues to be practiced during peoples’ retirement years. The goals of current members include gaining confidence,
practicing discipline, managing stress and anxiety, finding relaxation and calmness and acquiring the benefits of cardiovascular health, all in the context of making new friends.
To learn more, visit www.lancasterwingchun.com, call or text 717-208-2258 or stop by the center at 246 Manor Ave., Millersville. Open enrollment for classes is currently underway. Both inperson and virtual training options are available, and a complimentary trial experience is offered.

Mules nipped by Lebanon in extra innings
BY MONA STEINHAUERDespite jumping out to a 4-0 lead after two complete innings, Solanco’s baseball team suffered a 6-5, extra inning loss to Lebanon Friday, April 21.
The Cedars made a comeback with three runs in the third and two more in the fifth to go ahead 5-4. Solanco tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Nate Harnish singled the first pitch he saw, plating Tyler Burger who opened with a triple.
That momentum was shortlived. Lebanon opened the eighth with two singles and a one out base hit that plated the go-ahead run. Solanco went three up, three down in their half of the inning.
Both teams were credited with eight hits and the Cedars committed six errors but still pulled away. Burger was the big hitter of the day, going 3-4
with one RBI as the only multi-hit batter for the Mules.
Kayden Strong pitched the first 4.1 innings, giving up five earned runs while striking out five and walking three. Sawyer Weyman pitched 3.2 innings in relief and fanned three batters.
On a bigger stage Monday night, the Mules faced Section Two leader Lampeter-Strasburg at the Clipper Stadium but could not even the score against the Pioneers, suffering an 8-2, one-hit loss.
The Pioneers held a slim 1-0 lead heading into the fifth inning but broke the game open with six runs in the fifth, sparking the 8-2 final. A solo homer by Lampeter’s Anthony Turek in the top of the sixth capped the scoring.
“They worked a few walks and with two outs had two big two out, two strike hits to score,” recalled head coach Mike Miller.
Brayden Herr got the nod to start and suffered the loss, striking out five and walking six. Strong and Weyman pitched the final two innings with Strong working four strikeouts.
“This has been a tough stretch,” said Miller. “The story has been the lack of clutch hitting. We were not able to capitalize with runners on. We left eight on base against Lebanon and ten against LS,” he added. “We have to get more quality at bats to get those runs across.
In a Wednesday night game that featured three hits, five walks and one error by each team, the Mules dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker at Ephrata. A one-out walk in the second inning scored, what proved to be the game winner, on a sacrifice fly.
Owen Underwood, Harnish and Lucas Vilk were the hitters for Solanco. Harnish struck out five over five innings. Dillon Dean pitched one inning in relief.
SOFTBALL
As the first batter of the game, Josie Janssen’s solo homer ignited Solanco’s 20-4, four-inning win at Lebanon on Friday, April 21. Jansen’s 2-5, 3RBI effort was one of many solid at bats as Solanco collected 16 hits in the win and took advantage of four errors and five walks. Ava Martin and Zoey Evans both went 4-4 and combined for five doubles. Sara DeFrancesco clubbed a pair of home runs and plated three runs. Samantha Coble also finished with two hits,
including a homer, and had 3RBI. Ava Fedoruk added a 3RBI day and Delaney Gote, with a pair of doubles, pushed in two runs.
The visitors built a 14-0 lead after two innings before Lebanon got on board with a four-run fourth. That momentum was squashed when Solanco scored six runs in the bottom half.
Kira Roark struck out six and walked five. Holly Grube collected four strikeouts and walked one over the last 1 1/3 inning.
Solanco hosted LampeterStrasburg for round two of their Section Two series on Monday and evened the score with a tightly contested 5-4 victory.
“It was a big game and a big win,” said head coach Brett Miller. “Both teams played well enough to win it. We were fortunate and won.”
Anna Sexton, in her first start in the circle, went the distance, striking out five and scattering seven hits.
“Anna, except for Brooke Zuber’s two home runs, kept them at bay for the most part and we made the plays behind her,” said Miller. “We caught a lot of fly balls.”
Gote started the scoring with a lead off homer in the second inning. Three batters later, Sexton (2-3, 2RBI) helped herself with a two-run triple.
“They tried to throw Anna out at third but threw the ball away, so we picked up another run,” said Miller.
L-S came back with two in the top of the third, compliments of Zuber’s round-tripper, and Solanco got one back in the bottom half when Grube doubled in Roark who reached with a base hit.
Solanco capped their scoring in the bottom of the fourth on Janssen’s (2-3, 1RBI) base hit. L-S closed the gap with two in the fifth, one via a second Zuber home run.
“Both teams calmed down after that,” said Miller. “We did not play well at all the first time we played them and got the result like we played. L-S is much better than their record (5-7 overall), but this is just one game. For it to mean anything, we have to get the
next one. We can’t take anyone lightly.”
TRACK
Solanco’s track and field teams swept the Spartans at Garden Spot Monday, April 24 with some strong results in the field events. “We surprised ourselves on the girls’ side with some amazing throws and only giving up five points,” noted head coach Jen McDowell.
The girls swept the shot and the discus en route to an 85.33 - 64.66 victory. Martha Weaver led the way with a pair of firsts, including a big PR in the shot (35-3.25).
Taelor Martin and Gabbi Kline followed in the shot while Avery Caldwell and Kyleigh Murphy did the same in the discus. Weaver was also third in the javelin with Paige Althoff taking second.
Oli Oravitz led the jumpers with firsts in the long (17-2.5) and triple (34-3.25) while Katie Urbine cleared 11 feet to win the pole vault and Maite Granga finished in third. Oravitz also won the 200 (26.8) while Urbine triumphed in a very close 100 with a 12.4.
Other highlights included the distance team of Daria Neaves, Emma Baxter and Anna Linde sweeping the 3200. Emma Housekeeper won the open 400 and was third in the 100 with a 12.6.
The boys’ team also dominated in the field, racking up six first place finishes and going 1-2 in four of those.
Noah Baber was the top jumper, clearing 6-1 in the high and going 20-6 in the
long. Tucker Kyler followed with a second in the high and Josiah Forren was second in the long and won the triple jump (40-11 PR).
“It was a team effort for the boys, who only gave up 17 points in the jumps and throws,” said McDowell. “Braden Caldwell had a big night with two PRs.”
Wyatt Armstrong rounded out the jumping wins, clearing 10-6 in the pole vault.
In the throws it was freshman Frank Lucarino (117) and Braden Caldwell going 1-2 in the discus and Caldwell (136 PR) and Ford taking first and second in the javelin. Caldwell was also second in the shot (48-3 PR).
On the track, Anthony Solis Morales led the scoring with a pair of wins. The senior was first in the mile (4:51) and the 800 (2:07).
Ian Althoff picked up five points in the 400 and was second in the 100 behind Riley Ford’s top time of 11.1.
Bradley Weder rounded out the winners with a 16.9 in the 110 hurdles and just missed first in the 300’s by .3 seconds.
The teams also competed in the Leonard Stephen Invitational on Sunday where the girls finished in fifth place out of 18 teams. The top three place-winners included: Urbine- first in the pole vault; the 4x800 team of Granja, Baxter, Mosteller and Neaves, third; and Weaver- third in the shot.
For the boys, Baber won the long jump and was second in the high jump.

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, has announced a new Focus Exhibit in the Snyder Gallery for its 2023 season. The exhibit is “The Market Town and the Metropolis: 18thCentury Lancaster and Its Artistic Connections to Philadelphia.”
Throughout most of the 18th century, Philadelphia remained the largest city in the American colonies and then in the fledgling United States. In many ways, it was America’s political, financial and cultural epicenter. During this same period, the borough of Lancaster was one of the largest
non-coastal towns in America and was closely tied to Philadelphia both commercially and culturally. In addition to serving as a source of raw materials, food and supplies for Philadelphia as well as an important market for its elegantly crafted goods, Lancaster, through which passed the “great wagon road,” increasingly came to serve as Philadelphia and its port’s gateway to western settlement. This already strong connection was both manifested by and strengthened with the completion of the Lancaster-Philadelphia Turnpike in 1794, the first long-distance macadam road in the new United States.
With Lancaster’s growing affluence and stronger ties to Philadelphia as the 18th century progressed, the connections between both in the fields of the decorative arts increasingly flourished. Lancaster

oped unique styles that, while clearly influenced by Philadelphia artisans, did not merely mimic them. Artisans, such as furniture makers Thomas Tufft and Peter Frick, worked in both Lancaster and in Philadelphia. Examples of works attributed to both men will be included in this exhibit and demonstrate influences from both Philadelphia and Lancaster.
The exhibit will also highlight local tastemakers who were exposed to new styles through their personal connections to Philadelphia and brought these styles to Lancaster. The exhibit will include a rare, late 18thcentury Philadelphia Chippendale camelback sofa believed to have belonged to Judge Jasper Yeates; the sofa is part of a private family collection and has never before been publicly exhibited.

Also included among Lancaster County tastemakers were affluent persons who had their portraits painted in Philadelphia. The exhibit features a portrait of Lancaster County Judge Henry Slaymaker by John Hesselius and a portrait of Henry’s wife, Faithful Richardson Slaymaker, by John’s father, Gustavus Hesselius, an early Swedish immigrant to Philadelphia. These portraits are also part of a private collection and have not been publicly exhibited since 1971 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
The Richard C. von Hess Foundation is the Founding Sponsor for this exhibit. This exhibit is also funded in part through a grant approved by the Americana Corner Preserving America Grant Program.
Admission to the 2023 Focus Exhibit is included with the purchase of an admission ticket. This Focus Exhibit will run through Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Prima Theatre show to celebrate moms
Prima Theatre will present “The Mom Show,” a concert experience celebrating what it means to be a mom, on select dates from Friday, May 5, to Saturday, May 13, at Prima Theatre, 941 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster.
Songs and stories will be center stage in a cabaret-style interactive concert. The show features songs like “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder, “Mama Said” by The Shirelles, and “Brave” by Sara Bareilles that are woven together with banter and lighthearted games, featuring prizes. Mitch Nugent, Prima’s co-founder and executive artistic producer, noted that the show can be
enjoyed by anyone, not just moms.
The show features Josephine Phoenix, Michelle Wittrien, Tammie Harris, and swing Kayla Capone Kasper. Phoenix hails from Miami, Fla., and is a stage and screen star with strong comedic skills. Wittrien is a Lancaster theater veteran and is returning to Prima after performing at American Music Theatre and Prima for many years. Wittrien has recently been a leading vocalist with the United States Air Force Band. Harris returns to Prima after playing the Witch in “Into the Woods.” Kasper is a new mom, as well
as voice coach, a singer, and an actress, making her Prima debut. Music directing is Lauren Ney, who leads the live band on a baby grand piano, along with Tristan
Klopp on guitar, Joe Fuscia on percussion, and Kacy Raby on bass.
Prima’s theater offers free parking, an in-theater bar, and a close view of the performers.
Tickets are limited, and reservations at www.prima theatre.org/mom are recommended. Attendees may choose from private tables or traditional seating on risers in
chairs. Discounted group tickets are available by visiting www.primatheatre.org/group or calling the box office at 717-327-5124. The theater is handicapped-accessible.
