Solanco students take first and second place at robotics competition
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDManypeople believe that a portion of jobs that current students will accept in the next decade do not exist yet. With the rapid advance of technology in recent years, especially in artificial intelligence, some teachers are seeking innovative ways to prepare students for the future. “Even if a student wants to get into a trade like construction or plumbing, they’ll be using computing,” said Todd Brown, who teaches the robotics class at Solanco. “Having knowledge of basic computer science principles will give the kids great skills for any field.”
On April 25, students in Solanco High School’s robotics class traveled to Millersville University for the Sea Air and Land Challenge. The competition was created through a partnership between Penn State University and the United States Navy as a way to give students a hands-on education experience with engineering. Schools from eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware were provided with
criteria for the challenge 10 weeks in advance so they could begin preparing for the competition.
Students have an option to participate in one of three divisions for the challenge: Sea, Land and Air. Teams in each division are tasked with using a combination of software and hardware skills to create bots that will navigate a scenario that emulates a real-life response from the United States military. Two teams from Solanco High School elected to participate in the Land division, designing bots to navigate a scenario where a natural disaster has occurred and debris is obstructing a roadway. The students needed to use their bots to deliver supplies through a simulated terrain amidst the aftermath of a hurricane or tornado. The two teams of Solanco students placed first and second in the Land division; Adam Noel and Adam Peffer acquired first place, and Santiago Yu Jiang, Curtis Sheets and Kohen Fowler placed second.
“It was a lot of fun being able to work outside of class,” said Noel, a senior. “You learn that not everything
is going to be perfect in the first try. There’s a high chance that you have to go back and tweak the code and some other things.” Noel plans to major in mechanical engineering at Penn State University next year and hopes to continue taking robotics classes.
“The competition was a good learning environment. We got to see other people’s designs and are applying the same things that we do in class,” said Fowler, a junior. “We’re still working on solving a problem with technology.” Fowler plans to study computer science after he graduates from high school.
At the beginning of the semester, Brown began teaching the students logical reasoning and computational thinking skills to prepare them for the process of designing a robot. In the robotics class, students work in the programming language C++ to give their robots commands and program functions. “It’s about critical thinking, but the competition gives kids an opportunity to think on the fly and perform in a crisis situation,” Brown said.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn Saturday, May 18, motivational speaker and author Eleanor Isaacson will visit Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville. Isaacson, who lives in Willow Street, will give a talk titled “Surviving Nazi Germany During WWII,” and she will offer copies of her book, “Dancing From Darkness,” for both purchase and signing. The event will be free to attend, but donations will be accepted.
Isaacson was born in New Jersey in 1934. In 1936, Isaacson’s mother took her to Germany and returned to the United States without her. Isaacson grew up in Germany under Adolf Hitler’s regime and weathered the chaos brought on by World War II. In “Dancing from Darkness,” Isaacson describes what it was like to experience bombings and military occupation as a child in Germany, as well as how her faith in God helped her through difficult times. After the war ended, Isaacson returned to the United States at the age of 13 to be reunited with her mother. Although she had finally returned to the country where
she was born, Isaacson faced new trials and hardly spoke any English. Isaacson independently published “Dancing Fom Darkness” in 2017 after working on it for 60 years. A German publisher contacted Isaacson after the book’s release to ask her permission to translate the book to German. The German translation of the book is now carried in stores across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Although the book was not officially published until 2017, Isaacson has been sharing her life story for the last 48 years as a motivational speaker.

“I want people who read the book to be encouraged and have hope,” Isaacson said. “My goal is for people to trust God and move forward with a very positive attitude in life, no matter what has happened. Everything has a purpose.”
Isaacson’s experiences have also given her an opportunity to connect with many Amish communities in Lancaster. Isaacson often visits Amish schools and farms to share her story and give a history lesson to the children there. She added that she is able to comfortably speak with her Amish audiences due to her fluen-
cy in German.
In addition to being a motivational speaker and author, Isaacson has pursued many careers in her life, including competitive ballroom dancing, fashion design and modeling, home decorating and gourmet cooking. Isaacson also wrote a devotional titled “The Invisible Presence,” which she adapted from “Dancing From Darkness.” The devotional comprises meditations, prayers, Scripture passages and Isaacson’s ruminations on her spiritual journey.

A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”
Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be
offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.
The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.
“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Every-
one is excited to be there supporting GSS,” Stebbins said. “Whether you’re a regular golfer, a newbie, or somewhere in the middle, you’re going to have a great time.”
Registration for the EPC Golf Outing can be completed up to 48 hours before the event, but space will become limited after Friday, May 19. To register, visit https://epc golfouting.com/register.

Track teams battle CV; softball clinches section
BY MONA STEINHAUERThe track teams took the measure of Conestoga Valley Monday, May 1, and were dealt a pair of losses.
“We’re fighting some soreness and tiredness from running the double meets (Cy Fritz Invite on Saturday),” said head coach Jen McDowell. “We will refocus for our last dual meet.”
The boys, despite a 109-41 loss, scored the bulk of their points in the field. Josiah Forren claimed the triple with a 41-6 PR and Noah Baber won the long (21-1) and was second in the high jump. Kyler Tucker added thirds in the triple and high.
Braden Caldwell won the shot (44-6) and was third in the javelin. John Sankus added a second in the shot and followed Jordan Kephart’s second in the discus with a third.
Wyatt Armstrong cleared 10 feet to win the pole vault.
On the track, Anthony Solis Morales finished second in both the mile and two mile runs. Wyatt Tomison added a third in the 3200 and Ian Althoff was third in the open 400.
The girls battled to a respectable 81-68 final but CV claiming three relay wins helped to sway the Buckskin victory.
Emma Baxter earned two wins, taking the mile (5:47.4) and the 3200 (12:20.1) but CV took charge after that.
In the field, Martha Weaver’s winning 33-6 led a sweep in the shot with Taelor
Martin and Gabbi Kline following. She also won the discus (87-7) with Kyleigh Murphy taking third. Paige Althoff added a second in the javelin and was third in the triple.
Oli Oravitz continued to show her strength in the jumps, winning the long (16-10.5) and triple (34-2) while picking up second in the 100 and third in the 200.
Claire Graybeal also placed in two events, taking second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300’s.
Maite Granja wrapped up the winners with a first in the pole vault.
The teams turned in some solid individual efforts in the rain at the Cy Fritz Invitational on April 29. Oravitz won the long jump and the 4x800 team of Granja, Daria Neaves, Baxter, and Lexi Groff posted the winning time.
Unseeded in the 3200, Isaac Esh finished second. Sarah Bard added a third in the 100 and Weaver and Caldwell both claimed fourth in the shot put as did the 4x800 team of Althoff, Tomison, Jimmy Hartigan and Solis Morales.
SOFTBALL
Solanco’s three game run through the early part of last week opened with a 6-3, come-from-behind, under the lights win over LampeterStrasburg at Garrett Park (May 1).
Less than 24 hours later they clinched the Section Two title, head coach Brett Miller’s 34th, with a quick dismantling of Elizabethtown (11-1) and on Wednesday they shut out
CV behind Roark’s no-hitter.
“We’ve been getting the hits when we need them and taking advantage of opportunities,” said Miller. “Lately there have been a number of two out hits. It’s been a team effort up and down the lineup. Everyone is doing their job.”
Anna Sexton hit the first batter she faced with her first pitch. She walked the second one and after one out, walked another loading the bases. But the senior hurler buckled down and struck out the next two batters to squash Lampeter’s hopes.
“To get out of that jam with a pair of strikeouts is pretty meaningful,” said Miller. “She got stronger as the game went on.”
Sexton finished with four strikeouts and five walks and helped herself at the plate with a huge two run single in Solanco’s six run sixth inning that tied the game. The visitors batted around that frame. L-S made a pitching change at that point and Gote followed with a fly ball that was dropped, loading the bags, again. Fedoruk (3-3) added a run scoring single and freshman Ava Martin, who started the rally with a leadoff walk, ripped a two out single to short that was booted, and plated two more runs.
“Getting out of the inning with a 6-3 lead instead of a 4-3 lead was a big difference at that point in the game,” said Miller.
L-S put two runners on in the bottom half and Sexton worked a groundout, a strike-
out and another popout to Holly Grube at second to end the game.
At home against E-town Tuesday, seven different batters accounted for six doubles and a pair of triples in Solanco’s 11-1, five inning victory. Sexton led with 3RBI and a double, Grube had 2RBI and a triple and Kylie Roark added 2RBI on two doubles and a base hit. Josie Janssen walked twice and scored three runs.
“The girls were ready to play,” said Miller. “They didn’t want to lessen what happened the night before. Holly’s base hit in the fifth gave us the winning run. And Anna pitched well and didn’t need many pitches to finish the game.”
At home again Wednesday, Roark faced 15 batters, struck out six, including the side in the fifth inning and did not give up a hit in a 10-0 result against CV. Solanco plated five runs in the first, three as a result of Fedoruk’s triple, and never looked back.
Grube ripped a pair of triples, DeFrancesco another and Janssen added a double as five of Solanco’s nine hits were of the extra base variety.
Solanco currently sits at 11-1 (14-1 overall) with the rest of the section saddled five losses, or more.
Solanco’s hectic schedule began Thursday, April 27, with a 6-4 come-from-behind win over visiting Ephrata. In a game that featured nine hits, zero errors and five strikeouts by both teams, Solanco spotted the Mounts four runs over the first 4.5 innings, and then clawed its way back, scoring two in the bottom of the fourth and taking the lead for good with a four run fifth.
Delaney Gote’s two out, two run single sparked the fourth inning scoring while the hitting came alive in the fifth. Zoey Evans (single), Martin (RBI triple), Janssen (RBI single), Roark (single) set the stage for Grube’s run scoring base hit that put Solanco in front. Sara DeFrancesco’ RBI single made it 6-4.
Anna Sexton (5K, 0W, 9H) did the work over the final three innings, retiring eight of nine hitters. Grube went 3-3 on the day with Roark (2-3) and Gote (2 RBI) contributing.
BASEBALL
Despite jumping out to a 3-1 first inning lead at Elizabethtown Thursday, April 27, the Mules dropped a 13-3 result, finishing with just three hits on the day while giving up ten. Both teams combined for five errors and 13 walks in a sloppy game.
Austin Wenger’s two out triple plated two runs and an error allowed Nate Harnish, who reached on a base hit, to score. Owen Underwood’s two out triple in the fourth rounded out Solanco’s hitting.
“We have played them well all season but couldn’t get enough going to stay in the game,” said head coach Mike Miller.
Monday (May1) the Mules bounced back with a 4-2 nod over L-S, a team battling for the section title. They finished with just two hits on the day but took advantage of
four errors and four walks.
L-S walked the first two batters of the game. A Tyler Burger groundout and a Nate Harnish sac fly gave Solanco a quick 2-0 lead. Both teams traded runs in the third and seventh innings with Owen Underwood’s two out triple in the seventh sparking Solanco’s final run.
“Herr was cruising behind great defense by Austin Wenger and Owen McElroy,” said Miller. “We had great heads up plays on defense to catch some extra runners in the middle innings that helped us build momentum. We capitalized on the errors but mostly beat them with working walks and getting runners moved when we needed to.
“Nate pitched his way out of a bases loaded jam to secure the victory,” he added. “And freshman Luke Herr (2B) made his first varsity start.

“Our season is coming down to the last few games and we are trying to make the best push we can. We believe we have the talent to do it, now we have to prove to ourselves we can make it happen.”
They took a step in the right direction with Wednesday’s 10-8 win at CV. Tied at 8-8 in the top of the seventh, Underwood connected for a base hit that scored the last two runs of the game.
Solanco trailed 4-0 after three and 6-3 after four before a five run fifth gave them a short 8-6 lead. CV responded with a two-spot in the sixth, setting the stage for Underwood’s (3-5) heroics.
Burger, Harnish, Lucas Vilk and Wenger all collected two hits with Wenger and Harnish plating three runs each.

Artists invited to enter contest
Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed Stewards in York, in partnership with the City of York, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and the Watershed Alliance of York, are launching the 2023 Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Contest, a project to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and the negative impacts it can have on waterways. Each painted storm drain will contain an environmental message connecting stormwater runoff, storm drains, and water pollution.
Art submissions are currently being accepted from artists age 14 and up who currently reside in the Chesapeake Bay water-
shed. The deadline for entries is Monday, May 22. Guidelines for submitting art can be found at www.street2creek.org.
A panel of local judges will judge the artworks, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three artists. The winning artists will complete their art at three
select storm drains in downtown York. The new paintings will become part of the 18 storm drain murals that can be found between the Codorus Creek and the Royal Square District.
This project was funded by York Water Company, S.H.A.R.E., the Street 2 Creek
partners, and Cornerstone Barber and Shave Parlour.

A $15,000 donation through Pennsylvania’s Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit Program will help expand the Student Leadership Program, which provides training to transform students into Bench Mark Program peer mentors and employees. Fulton also donated $7,500 through the state Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.
Will Kiefer, executive director of Bench Mark Program, accepted the donation from Fulton Bank staff members Phil Smith, regional commercial executive; Christie Eachus, market manager; Mark Katkovcin, consumer sales manager; and Josh Griffith, commercial banking team leader.
