Robotics Team In Its Optimus Prime he Solanco High School (SHS) robotics team has won the most innovative design award in the Penn State SeAL Virtual Robotics state competition. The competition was hosted and organized by Penn State University’s Business, Engineering, Information Science, and Technology Department and sponsored by the U.S. Navy. The competition consisted of several dozen high school robotics teams from across the mid-Atlantic region and Ohio. Students had to use their knowledge and research in robotics to design, create, and code a robotic system that could be deployed via sea, air, or land to assist in a catastrophic event. SHS seniors Zach Johnson, Kyle Fisher, and Colin Moran designed, created, and coded a robot that can sense objects in the area surrounding the robot, determine what each of these objects is, pick up each object, and determine the correct unloading location in a fully autonomous mode.

T

“The robot’s performance and the ability to complete the task in an autonomous manner thoroughly impressed the judges, especially that these students were able to grasp and implement foundations of artificial intelligence and machine learning into their creation,” said SHS technology education teacher Todd Brown. Fisher completed a robotics class last year and thought it would be a good idea to start an independent study, so he, along with Moran and Johnson, formed a robotics team. After graduation, Moran will attend West Virginia University to join the University Rover Challenge Team. “I joined the robotics team (at SHS) to see if I was cut out for something like this, and I was!” exclaimed Moran. Johnson plans to pursue mechanical engineering. “My dad works for a company that does stuff for NASA, so after seeing him do that, I joined the team because I thought it was really cool,” stated Johnson.

Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters WENDY ROYAL

There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. education teacher. Childs built the project into his curriculum and had the students in his STEM class design drink carriers. From the designs that were submitted, Childs, Kreider, Tucker, and Kreider’s student teacher Vivian Feliciani chose two. Tucker’s art class sketched designs for a stamp that would go on each drink carrier, and seventh-grader Jasmine Gutierrez created the winning design. The art class will make a digital version of Jasmine’s sketch for Laser Works in Quarryville. Laser Works will create and donate a rubber stamp using the design. Kreider’s technology education students manufacture the product. They’re using repurposed cardboard to create anywhere from 10 to 200 drink carriers for The Daily Grind. Each student is involved in every step of the process. “When I had stations in the past, I learned that students became very bored doing the same things repeatedly, so now I like to empower them to control

their own product,” stated Kreider. “I’m most excited for the kids to see that these skills are something that can be used out in the world in a real way,” noted Tucker. “I’m excited for them to see a practical application of something they designed and created.” “I’m excited to have the students go to The Daily Grind with their families and see what they made being used out in the real world,” added Kreider. Classes such as STEM, art, technology education, and music are referred to as related arts at Swift Middle School. After the completion of this project, Kreider said he hopes all the related arts classes continue to collaborate and work together to do projects like this in the future.

In late December, Swift Middle School art teacher Melissa Tucker went to The Daily Grind in Quarryville. After Tucker placed a large to-go order, the staff notified her that they had run out of drink carriers. Due to the pandemic, many people were ordering takeout,

so there was a high demand for drink carriers. A staff member provided Tucker with a carrier that was not meant for beverages, but it did the trick. Soon after, Tucker decided to create a service project for her students that would benefit The Daily Grind. “We saw a need and wanted to do something about it,” said Tucker. “I wanted to give the kids something different to do that’s a connection to outside of the building because everything we’ve been doing has been so secluded.” Tucker saw this project as the perfect opportunity to collaborate with other classes at Swift Middle School. Also involved with the project are Kevin Childs, Swift and Smith Middle School STEM teacher, and Derrick Kreider, Swift Middle School technology

Hempfield’s Tanner In a ‘must win’ game Thursday, May 13 Solanco’s baseball team qualified for the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs with a come-frombehind 5-3 thriller over visiting Lebanon. “We have qualified for the league playoffs six times in the 10 years since I’ve been here,” said head coach Tom Fish. “That’s something I’m proud of.” And something Solanco needed to work for Thursday. Despite a one-run lead in the first inning, Lebanon pushed ahead with two in the third and one in the sixth before Solanco’s rally photo by Mona Steinhauer in the bottom half. In a ‘must win’ for Solanco, Thursday, “What an exciting May 13, Mitchell Moyer snags a game,” said Fish. “While Lebanon pop fly in right field. Lebanon doesn’t have a

great record (3-14), they do have a great pitcher and we saw him. He was tough today and we managed just three hits. But when we reached, we stole bases and each of our three hits drove in runs.” Solanco took the brief early lead on a Nate Harnish two out single in the first. Then, in the sixth, Garrett Worthington smacked a clutch two run single to tie the game and Nate Miller, two batters later, sent the game-winning, two out, two run homer over the fence. “Believe it or not, this was Nate’s second late inning, game-winning home run in a week,” Fish pointed out. On Friday he homered to beat E-town in the seventh. Today, this home run sends us to leagues and eliminates E-town.” All three of Solanco’s home runs this season belong to Nate Harnish. Saturday morning, May 15, the Mules traveled to Manheim for the opening round of the L-L League playoffs looking to avenge a 4-2 league playoff loss to the Barons suffered in 2019. The 18-1 hosts, however, would not be denied and advanced with a 6-2 victory. Manheim set the tone early, scoring four in the first and one in the second before Solanco got on board with a pair in the fourth. The hosts got one back in the bottom half, wrapping up the scoring for the game. “We knew it was a tough test and we really sold out just to get there,” said Fish, “but I’m proud and happy that we did. It was a great experience for the younger guys and a great atmosphere. And our seven seniors experienced a playoff game. I thought we played well after the first inning.” Solanco scored on a two-run double by Mitchell Moyer, plating Nate Miller, who was hit by a pitch, and Nate Harnish, who reached on a

fielder’s choice. “On the mound, we used five pitchers,” said Fish. “Logan Wagner and Mitchell Moyer pitched well and kept us in the game. They did a nice job keeping the league’s highest scoring team off balance. “Overall, we faced some good teams and some really good pitchers this year. We came in low on experience and had some injuries along the way, as all teams do,” he continued. “But we kept fighting and earned a playoff spot. Our season ends at 6-4 in league play, 9-10 in the regular season, and 0-1 in the post-season. We had some cool moments along the way.” SOFTBALL While the rest of the league was focused on the L-L League playoffs, the softball team was playing to keep their district hopes alive. They wrapped up the league portion of the season with a 3-1 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg (19-1) Thursday, May 14, and picked up non-league wins over Susquehannock and Central Dauphin East last week. L-S scored all the runs they needed, two in the fourth inning, gave up a homer in the fifth, and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to sweep the series. They defeated Solanco 18-1 on April 9. “Playing our fourth straight game, it was a good performance in the sense of getting better,” said head coach Brett Miller. “We’re a bit generous at times but we had some opportunities. Anna Sexton kept them off-stride, and we made some plays behind her, including Alyssa Schlagnhaufer who made all the catches in left field. But at times, we’re too generous.” Such was the case in the fourth inning when two errors played a role in Lampeter’s early lead. Taryn Britigan belted her first home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth and Solanco had runners on first and second with one out in the sixth but could not capitalize. Last Monday, with the game tied at 2-2, Solanco took control with seven in the top of the fourth and cruised to an 11-3 win at Susquehannock. “We literally had seven hits in a row, all with two outs,” stated Miller. “And Emily Sims had a tworun homer in there. She went 5-5 with three RBIs. She just hit the ball. Marlee Haupt had some key hits in there as well and Jade Eshleman hit one off the fence for a double. “We had an error in that first inning and they hit a home run for the early lead,” he added. Sims and Mia Grinestaff responded with RBI base hits in the second inning to tie the game. “Marlee pitched well but then she got tired, so we brought Anna in for two outs and then the seventh,” Miller noted. “We were up 11-2 with a chance to shorten the game but

didn’t. We’re making progress,” he added. “This was an important win against a 5A school. I was pleased.” Haupt, Sexton and Kendal Janssen all finished with two hits, and Grube added three. Solanco turned in another solid performance, upending CD East 132 in five innings last Wednesday. Up

3-0 after three innings, Solanco plated ten runs over the fourth and fifth innings to pull away. Eshleman went 2-4 with a home run and three RBI’s. Holly Grube’s first inning triple put Solanco up 2-0. Sexton scattered nine hits and picked up the win with six strikeouts against zero walks.

Sounds of Strasburg, the annual series of five free concerts at the Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., will begin with a performance by AMFM on Saturday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m. The band’s name, AMFM, stands for Andy Mowatt’s Frequency Movement. The Lancaster-based band of more than five pieces consists of virtuosic musicians who play original arrangements that blend elements of jazz, jam, rock, funk, soul and blues. Mowatt has called the band’s sound “symphonic funk box - talkbox funk music.” Mowatt is a renowned guitarist with

more than 10 years of full-time professional experience as a musician. He teaches lessons and master classes, writes, produces, records and tours. Mowatt recently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he will be a member of the Air Force’s rock band, Max Impact. Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on soft turf within the park’s terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages will be prohibited.
