See A Need, Fill A Need BY COURTNEY MENGEL
For more than a month, Mike Todd has been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with COVID-19 pneumonia and other related complications. The last time his wife, LeAnn, and their three sons, Aidan, Riley, and Keegan, saw Mike was the day he was admitted to the hospital. The Todd family moved from Manheim to New Providence in 2015. The family is active in various
groups in southern Lancaster County, such as Solid Rock Youth Ministries and Encounter Church. Mike works for Yaeger Supply Inc., and LeAnn spends time cooking or baking for families in need. LeAnn lives by the motto “See a need, fill a need.” “Mike would lend the shirt off his back to help others,” stated Toni Drumm, a friend of the Todd family, “and LeAnn is very much an ‘I can do this’ person, but we wanted to help and support her.” See Todd Family pg 7
Senior class officers Paige Balliet (left) and Anna Stickler will be among those who graduate from Solanco High School on June 11.
A Tassel Is Worth The Hassle
Advertiser: How has your senior year been going? Balliet: This year made me realize what I value. You never realize how much you miss something until you don’t have it. S t i c k l e r : It’s been tough. We couldn’t come together for events, and a lot of the seniors aren’t here because they’re online. I see probably three seniors a day.
McCauley: Expect plans to change and embrace that change because you’re obviously changing those plans for a reason. Advertiser: What will you miss most about high school? B a l l i e t : I’m going to miss the closeness of the community and knowing everyone in our classes. Stickler: I agree with Paige. I’m going to miss how close everyone is. McCauley: I will miss everyone, especially librarian Emily Dawley. She’s stood by us and has does an awesome job planning events and helping us through high school. This fall, class president McCauley and class vice president Stickler plan to attend the Pennsylvania College of Health Science for nursing. As for class historian Balliet, she will attend Penn State’s main campus to major in kinesiology and exercise science.

Bringing Loved Ones Home With Project Lifesaver BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home. “If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of See Project Lifesaver pg 5

On Friday, June 11, approximately 250 students will graduate from Solanco High School (SHS). The commencement ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. at the Solanco football field, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. Recently, senior class officers Kayla McCauley, Anna Stickler, and Paige Balliet spoke to the Advertiser about their time at SHS.
McCauley: Our senior year went a lot different than everyone expected, we missed out on a lot of things, but I think the school district has been good with keeping things as normal as they can be. Advertiser: Is there anything you want to tell the Class of 2021? Balliet and Stickler: We miss you! McCauley: I feel like we all have adapted well and made the most of the year. We have a bright future ahead of us because we all got through this together. A d v e r t i s e r : If you could give a message to yourself when you were younger, what would it be? Balliet: Don’t worry about what other people think of you, focus on having fun. Stickler: It all will go by fast, so take the time to enjoy everything. Go to the dances, football games, everything.

Quarryville Lions Club has announced that the Huffnagle Park Concert Series will return this summer. At 7 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month from June to September, different bands will perform live at Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville. The performers will be Flipside Big Band on June 12, Summit Hill Bluegrass on July 10, Seasons Celtic Band on Aug. 14, and Ryan Mayersky on Sept. 11. The Flipside Big Band is directed by Howard Boots, and the guest vocalist will be Erin Biles, vocal music teacher at Solanco High School. The
trumpet solo on “Bye Bye Blackbird” will be performed by Gary Doll, retired instrumental music teacher at Solanco High School. Summit Hill Bluegrass is from southeastern Pennsylvania. The band plays bluegrass, gospel, and a variety of other genres. Seasons Celtic Band is comprised of siblings Mary-Kate Spring, Peter Winter, MaryTeresa Summer, Mary-Grace Autumn, and Mary-Clare Chun Lee. These siblings create a fusion of Celtic and roots music on harp, hammered dulcimer, mandolin, fiddle, and more. The award-winning band has been featured on both national radio and television,
and it has recorded six albums. Two of the members have competed in the All-Ireland musician competitions on their respective instruments, and the band performs frequently in concert series and at music festivals such as Celtic Fling, the Kutztown Folk Festival, and Music on the Mountain. Mayersky is a country artist from Lancaster. He began singing and playing guitar in 2002 and was the lead guitarist and vocalist for the bands Dorcas and To Begin Amor. To Begin Amor performed regularly at the Chameleon Club and Club 19, opening for local and major label bands. Attendees may bring lawn chairs and blankets and should
maintain social distance when finding places to sit. The series is sponsored by the Quarryville Lions Club, and admission will be free of charge. Donations will be accepted. “I’m most excited to be able to have a more normal summer this year and to give people a reason to come out and be social,” said concert series organizer Monica Wagner. This will be Wagner’s sixth year organizing the Huffnagle Park Concert Series. No rain location will be offered this year, so interested individuals should visit the “Huffnagle Park Concert Series” Facebook page to check for updates in the event of inclement weather.

said SHS technology education teacher Todd Brown. Fisher completed a robotics class last year and thought it would be a good idea to start an independent study, so he, along with Moran and Johnson, formed a robotics team. After graduation, Moran will attend West Virginia University to join the University Rover Challenge Team. “I joined the robotics team (at SHS) to see if I was cut out for something like this, and I was!” exclaimed Moran. Johnson plans to pursue mechanical engineering. “My dad works for a company that does stuff for NASA, so after seeing him do that, I joined the team because I thought it was really cool,” stated Johnson. “I’m just a builder,” said Fisher. “We all brought something different to the team, and I focused on the construction whereas Colin specialized in coding and programming.” This is the first year that SHS formed a robotics team. Brown said he hopes to continue the program at SHS and host a summer robotics camp this year for elementary and middle school students. ment and sponsored by the U.S. Navy. The competition consisted of several dozen high school robotics teams from across the mid-Atlantic region and Ohio. Students had to use their knowledge and research in robotics to design, create, and code a robotic system that could be deployed via sea, air, or land to assist in a catastrophic event. SHS seniors Zach Johnson, Kyle Fisher, and Colin Moran designed, created, and coded a robot that can sense objects
in the area surrounding the robot, determine what each of these objects is, pick up each object, and determine the correct unloading location in a fully autonomous mode. “The robot’s performance and the ability to complete the task in an autonomous manner thoroughly impressed the judges, especially that these students were able to grasp and implement foundations of artificial intelligence and machine learning into their creation,”

Project Lifesaver from pg 1 Lancaster member Cathy Cieslinski. “Project Lifesaver is all about bringing your loved ones home, and we saw a need in our county. Implementing this program in our county was important to our club.” Project Lifesaver is a search-andrescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brainrelated challenges across the United States. According to Project Lifesaver’s data, in over 3,400 searches, Project Lifesaver has achieved a 100% success rate on an average of less than 30 minutes. Pilot Club has partnered with 18 municipalities to bring Project Lifesaver to Lancaster County. Lt. Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equip-
ment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker said she decided to receive training because she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw value in the program. Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that emits a tracking signal on FM radio frequency. When a caregiver calls 911 and reports that a participant has wandered, a search team triangulates the area and uses a receiver to locate the individual through his or her transmitter. “People should enroll in the program because, although this won’t keep loved ones from wandering, it will serve as a safety net,” explained Cieslinski. “If they wander, this will give us a fighting chance to find them as opposed to finding that needle in a haystack.” Police officers keep profiles on every individual enrolled. “We have these on hand so officers are aware of what the person looks like, what they will possibly wander to, what their disabilities include, and so on,”

noted Brubaker. “Sometimes, we will meet individuals enrolled in the program, specifically children, to establish a friendship with them so that in the event of an emergency, they won’t be afraid of us. We want people to see us and know that we mean safety.” Individuals with an official diag-
nosis can enroll in Project Lifesaver. To request an application for Project Lifesaver, contact Cieslinski at 717572-2682. The Pilot Club welcomes new members. For more information, visit http://bit.ly/PilotClub or search for “Pilot Club of Lancaster” on Facebook.
A Solanco Robotics Summer Camp will be offered on Monday to Thursday, July 12 to 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. The camp is open to youths entering fourth through eighth grades. The camp will introduce students to the foundations of robotics and coding. Campers will learn the basics of coding through block coding and will learn to create their own code to solve real-world problems. The campers will be using Vex coding in C++, Amazon Future Engineering CoderZ in Python and other robotics and coding resources. Campers should be dropped off and picked up at the technology
education entrance of the high school, which is on the south side of the school; signs will be posted. All campers and staff members will follow all current COVID safety and health procedures that are in place at the time of the camp. The Solanco Robotics Camp serves as a fundraiser for the Solanco Robotics Competition teams as well as an avenue for younger students to learn about robotics, coding, computer science and other STEM fields. There is a fee per student. For information about how to register, email Todd Brown at Todd_Brown@solancosd.org. Registration must be received by Friday, June 11, to guarantee a T-shirt.

Mares Fall Short in District Opener BY MONA STEINHAUER
Round three of Solanco vs. Elizabethtown took place on both teams’ biggest stage of the season - the District Three Class 5A playoffs. After splitting the regular season with Solanco winning 3-2 in Elizabethtown on April 13 and the Bears returning the favor 3.5 weeks later in a slugfest in Quarryville, 10-9, the rubber match last Tuesday, back in Elizabethtown, decided who would move on. And it was the Bears and their four run sixth inning that delivered the blow Solanco hoped to avoid. The No. 6 seed hosts settled for a 6-1 win over the 10-8 Mares and lived to play another day. “It’s kind of unfortunate to meet another L-L team this early in the playoffs,” said head coach Brett Miller. “But we played those two games at the end and that got us photo by Mona Steinhauer the higher seed and pushed us to a Solanco’s Jade Eshleman looks for the pick off throw to first base familiar foe.” in last Tuesday’s District Three opener against Elizabethtown. Seeded in the top seven, Urbine cleared 116, tying her personal best while running the 100 between vaults and qualifying for states. She clocked a 12.59 in the prelims and then went 12.72 in the semis, missing the finals by .01. “She was seeded second going into the semifinals,”
said head coach Jen McDowell. “She did very well, considering she had to do the first run in the middle of the pole vault and then ran the semis after vaulting. The weather definitely made it tough.” Vanover, a senior, had a tough day and did not extend his season. “It was a great accomplishment to make it to districts,” said McDowell. “His best time was a 10.9 (handheld) so 11.14 FAT this season. He
ran an 11.56 on Friday.” The last Solanco athlete to compete in states was Anna Cooney, who qualified in 2018 in the shot put. Cooney was recently named to the NCAA Division Three Outdoor Track and Field All-Region team for both hammer and shot put. She will compete in the NCAA Division Three Championships in both events. Cooney attends Widener University.

Bagpipes Will Sound At Scottish Festival The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation has announced that the eighth annual Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival will be located on the grounds of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, and the historic Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church, 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville. The festival is a celebration of the Scottish origin of the Covenanters who settled in southern Lancaster and Chester counties. The event’s piping competition, which is sanctioned through the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a veterans memorial ceremony featuring the Washington Memorial Pipes and Drums, which will honor World War II veterans whose graves are on the grounds of Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. A wreath will be placed at each of the graves. After the ceremony and greetings from a Pennsylvania state representative, the Washington Memorial Pipes and Drums will lead a procession from the Highland Games field to the main performing area. From 10:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., there will be music performances, demonstrations, and workshops. Entertainment will include the Washington Memorial Pipes and Drums, Charlie Zahm, Tad Marks, Sean Heely & Celtic Trio, and more. Sheep herding, a haggis ceremony, spinning and weaving, fiddling and early Scottish weaponry are a few of the heritage demonstrations that will be available.
Scottish clans and organizations will be represented at the festival, and vendors will sell Scottish goods and food. American food will be available for purchase as well. The festival will be held rain or shine. An admission cost has been set for adults and teenagers. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Free parking will be available on-site. The proceeds will benefit the ongoing effort to maintain and restore the historic Covenanter church and its attached one-room school museum. Both sides of the structure will be open during the festival. For more information about the festival or to obtain discounted admission tickets, readers may visit www .covenanterscottishfestival .com or search for “8th Annual Covenanter Scottish Festival” on Facebook.

Drumm and LeAnn are part of a group called the “soccer village.” The group consists of about six parents whose sons play soccer together. “We carpool and support each other,” explained Drumm. “We’re a tight-knit group.” Recently, a group of boys on the Solanco soccer team went to the Todd house and worked on the yard for a few hours. Dolce Vita Pizzeria and Grill donated pizzas to feed the boys and the Todd family. “Dolce Vita is super supportive of the community,” said Drumm.
The soccer village also decided to start a GoFundMe page to financially support the Todd family. “As a community, we ‘saw a need’ and now we must ‘fill the need.’ People should donate because it goes back to seeing a need and filling a need, and that’s what community is all about,” stated Drumm. “The Todd family supports so many people with no questions asked, and I feel like it’s our turn to help them in any way we can.” To help the Todd family, visit http://bit.ly/ToddFamily.
