Unifying Students Through Fitness
A Tassel Is Worth The Hassle BY COURTNEY MENGEL
n Friday, June 11, approximately 250 students will graduate from Solanco High School (SHS). The commencement ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. at the Solanco football field, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. Recently, senior class officers Kayla McCauley, Anna Stickler, and Paige Balliet spoke to the Advertiser about their time at SHS. Advertiser: How has your senior year been going? Balliet: This year made me realize what I value. You never realize how much you miss something until you don’t have it. S t i c k l e r : It’s been tough. We couldn’t come together for events, and a lot of the seniors aren’t here because they’re online. I see probably three seniors a day. McCauley: Our senior year went a lot different than everyone expected, we missed out on a lot of things, but I think the school district has been good with keeping things as normal as they can be. Advertiser: Is there anything you want to tell the Class of 2021? Balliet and Stickler: We miss you! McCauley: I feel like we all have adapted well and made the most of the year. We have a bright future ahead of us because we all got through this together. A d v e r t i s e r : If you could give a message to yourself when you were younger, what would it be? Balliet: Don’t worry about what other people think of you, focus on having fun. Stickler: It all will go by fast, so take the time to enjoy everything. Go to the dances, football games, everything. McCauley: Expect plans to change and embrace that change because you’re obviously changing those plans for a reason. Advertiser: What will you miss most about high school?

“Whenever I come to Unified Fitness, I always have a smile on my face,” said Emma Kline, a Unified Fitness buddy and 10th-grade student at Solanco High School (SHS). “The heaviness of everything going on in life and in school just vanishes when we’re out here.” Unified Fitness is a new sixweek program at SHS that promotes inclusion among students through fitness activities. Before the program began, SHS students applied to serve as buddies for the Life Skills class, and SHS fitness and adapted physical education teacher Kacie Hershey grouped students into pairs. The program is similar to the Special Olympics in that each Life Skills student completes a heptathlon, which focuses on strength, endurance, and agility. The heptathlon provides the Unified Fitness participants with the See Unified Fitness pg 5

B a l l i e t : I’m going to miss the closeness of the community and knowing everyone in our classes. Stickler: I agree with Paige. I’m going to miss how close everyone is. McCauley: I will miss everyone,
especially librarian Emily Dawley. She’s stood by us and has does an awesome job planning events and helping us through high school. This fall, class president McCauley and class vice president

Yaeger Supply Inc., and LeAnn spends time cooking or baking for families in need. LeAnn lives by the motto “See a need, fill a need.” “Mike would lend the shirt off his back to help others,” stated Toni Drumm, a friend of the Todd family, “and LeAnn is very much an ‘I can do this’ person, but we wanted to help and support her.” Drumm and LeAnn are part of a group called the “soccer village.” The group consists of about six parents whose sons play soccer together. “We carpool and support each other,” explained Drumm. “We’re a tight-knit group.”

Recently, a group of boys on the Solanco soccer team went to the Todd house and worked on the yard for a few hours. Dolce Vita Pizzeria and Grill donated pizzas to feed the boys and the Todd family. “Dolce Vita is super supportive of the community,” said Drumm. The soccer village also decided to start a GoFundMe page to financially support the Todd family. “As a community, we ‘saw a need’ and now we must ‘fill the need.’ People should donate because it goes back to seeing a need and filling a need, and that’s what community is all about,” stated Drumm. “The Todd family supports so many people with no questions asked, and I feel like it’s our turn to help them in any way we can.” To help the Todd family, visit http://bit.ly/ToddFamily.

Students will pick their own events from a wide range of exercise options in accordance with what best suits their individual needs or interests. “I heard about the program in church when Ms. Hershey was talking about it, so I applied,” said Unified Fitness buddy and 11thgrader Blake Cheney. “My favorite part has been getting to know Brandon, Michael, and Tyler (three of the Life Skills students).” When the group members are not completing fitness exercises, they usually participate in fun games and activities in the gym or outdoors. “It’s awesome. My favorite activities are baseball and Wiffle ball!” exclaimed Brandon LeFevre, one of the Life Skills students. “I joined because I knew it would be fun.” This is the first year of the Unified Fitness program. “The most rewarding part of the program is seeing how much of an impact it’s making,” said Hershey. “It’s been

“This is the third time she’s received all-league recognition,” noted Miller. “She’s an all-star, literally, and our team MVP. She is probably the best catcher I have ever had, and we will miss her next season but look forward to what she will do at Lancaster Bible College.” Eshleman hit .500 for the year with six home runs, four triples, 27 RBIs and 20 runs scored. Joining Eshleman with First Team all-star recognition were juniors Becca Foulk, Marlee Haupt and freshmen Holly Grube and Emily Sims. Foulk led the team with a .521 batting average that included five doubles, three triples, three home runs, 20 RBIs and 25 runs scored. “She is one of the better pure hitters I have had in a long time,” said Miller. “She has played third base and first, but she can catch too.” Haupt batted .434 in the No. 5 slot, pitched some key games for Solanco and also played first base. “Marlee pitched some of those games that we really needed to win,” said Miller, “and her batting improved as the season moved along.” Hitting .450 and playing a variety of positions was Grube. “Holly is versatile,” said Miller. “She played right field, third base and pitched. And she had 27 hits and 29 RBIs as a freshman. She puts the bat on the ball.” Last, but not least, was Sims who found herself in the shortstop position. “She’s our leadoff hitter and is developing into a fine shortstop,” Miller said. “She hit .414 with nine doubles on the year. And she scored 28 runs which is what leadoff hitters are supposed to do. Emily is very consistent. “We look forward to next year,” the coach continued. “We have a number of underclassmen coming up that look good and a season of experience under our belts for this year’s squad.”

While varsity sports teams this spring suffered covid and quarantine issues, the JV teams took more of a hit. “Many of our normal opponents were unable to field teams this year so we played some new teams this season,” said JV coach Chad McDowell. The squad finished with an 8-5 record and split their games against Elizabethtown and LS. “Early on we beat Etown 8-5, but I believe our best game was the last game of the year, a 17-2 win over L-S, who previously beat us 8-4,” said McDowell. “It really showed our improvement as a team.” Oliva Musser was the team’s top pitcher and finished with a 7-2 record. Morgan Kreider and Becca Harper also saw time in the circle and did well. Samantha Coble led the team with a .486 batting average, collecting three doubles, four triples and a team-high 20 RBIs as the cleanup hitter. Josie Janssen finished with a .484 average with 20 runs and 11 stolen bases with Autumn Butler adding a .450 with 8 hits in 14 at bats over the final few games. Haley Dagen also hit over .400 with a .409. Brooke Jennings led with 12 stolen bases and 23 runs scored. She also drew 20 walks. “We were hit by injuries throughout the season that limited playing time for at least four of our girls,” noted McDowell. “As a team, we batted .395 with everyone hitting over .300 on the season.” BASEBALL all-stars The baseball team finished second in Section Two with a 6-4 record and advanced to the L-L League playoffs where their season ended with a 6-2 loss against Manheim Central. For their efforts, three players were named as Section Two allstars. Seniors Seth Harnish and Nate

Miller were First Team all-stars while Nate Harnish, a sophomore, was a second team selection. S. Harnish went 4-0 with one save on the mound. He collected 30 strikeouts and finished with an ERA of 3.50. The senior, who also played third base, led the team with 12 scored runs and 12 stolen bases. “Seth stepped up on the mound,” said head coach Tom Fish. “He was our starting pitcher in the last three wins, leading us to the league playoffs. His best outing was a seven-inning shutout against CV on senior day.” Miller, a second baseman, batted .294 with 16 RBI’s and three home runs. “Two of those homers were late inning game winners against Elizabethtown and Lebanon,” Fish recalled, “and in the last six days of our season.” First baseman N. Harnish owned Solanco’s top batting average with a .304. He finished with six doubles and 12 RBIs. “Many of his RBIs were

two out hits that really factored in some of our wins,” said Fish. “He was our most consistent hitter this year.” The JV baseball team finished with a 7-12 record that included seven losses by three runs or less. “We were young and inexperienced but competitive and able to grind in each contest,” said coach Mike Miller. “The players grew on both sides of the ball and the future of the program looks bright with these future stars coming up.” Dillion Dean led the JV Mules in almost every offensive category, including average, hits, RBIs and OBP. “The freshman showed great mindset at the plate with clutch hit after clutch hit,” said Miller. Brayden Herr was Solanco’s standout freshman on the mound, commanding a 3.23 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 26 innings pitches. “His command and ability to step up in big games helped keep us in the game whenever he took the mound,” noted Miller.

Over the past seven years, Lifecycles has helped young people ride the equivalent of more than four times around the Earth on their bicycles. “I track all the mileage of our local rides and our bigger trips, and we have now ridden more than 110,000 miles,” said Lee DeRemer, who runs Lifecycles with his wife, Marcie. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18 and offers participants a chance to enjoy friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. “We offer the boys and girls a positive experience, encouragement, a challenge, goal setting, mentoring and spiritual growth,” Lee explained. “Because our program includes all of that, there’s no room left for bullying or people making fun of each other. …
We don’t have kids tearing each other down. We like to say we find out what the teens are doing right, and we build on that.” Lifecycles began its current season on April 19 and is looking for more riders as well as more volunteers. Currently, the group has a girls’ team that rides on Mondays in Lititz and three boys’ teams - one in Marietta on Tuesdays, one in Landisville on Thursdays and another in New Holland also on Thursdays. The group also rides on two Saturdays a month. “This is 100% free for participants,” Lee noted. “There is never any cost for the riders. We have bikes, helmets and food for them. We provide a meal after each ride.” The organization is also looking for more volunteers. “If you would enjoy investing in a teenager, there are teenagers
who need to have the encouragement and the example you can set,” he stated. “If you enjoy riding, whether you’re young or old, slow or fast, there’s a ride group waiting for you.” The group is also looking for volunteers to help serve meals or sign in participants at weekly rides. Lee emphasized that Lifecycles is open to any youths in the county, and no experience with bike riding is necessary. “We don’t have tryouts,” he remarked. “If you show up at Lifecycles, we believe you’re supposed to be there.” Along with weekly rides, Lifecycle members have the opportunity to participate in longer challenges as well. A group of eight boys and five leaders will ride from the coast of Oregon to the coast of Delaware between Thursday, June 10, and Sunday, Aug. 8, covering 3,600 miles. Close to 50 others will participate in one of three weeklong challenge rides from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., later this summer. Lee noted that he’s been impressed with the impact leaders have made on the riders and with the way the youths have responded to the program. “For three hours on one of those evenings, or five hours on a Saturday, we pry the phones out of the teens’ fingers, and they find out they can live through the experience,” he said with a laugh. In all seriousness, he noted that God has been present with Lifecycles since the beginning. “We have ridden safely for seven years,” he said. “That’s a miracle. God has protected us, He has provided for us and He has sustained us.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.

LOHF Approves Grant Funding LOHF (Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation) has approved funding to five programs meeting youths and child behavioral health needs in Lancaster County. These programs seek to improve the mental wellbeing of youth and children, especially those who may not otherwise get the support they need. Bench Mark Program - Open Gym was awarded $10,000. The mentors at Bench Mark Program aim to use exercise, academics, and career counseling to help at-risk youths have a successful future. Although life on the streets is temporary, the mentors commit to students’ well-being for as long as needed. Mom’s House - Positive Behavioral Health Intervention and Support Services was awarded $15,800. Mom’s House is open to all singleparent students enrolled in school full time. The organization serves young females trying to earn a GED diploma, high school diploma, or college degree. Patients R Waiting - Diversifying Doulas Initiative received a $12,000 grant. This program addresses health disparities through workforce

development in various aspects of care. The program connects with the community through its doula program, a health equity book club, and medical activism through COVID-19 vaccination events and more. It also serves students and is currently helping 12 students with test preparation, resume, and personal statement workshops and graduate school application strategy. Advoz - Diversifying Restorative Justice was awarded $10,000. Advoz provides services for youths in the restorative justice program by partnering with the Office of Juvenile Probation. Trained facilitators work with victims and offenders in victim-offender conferencing, so youths can take responsibility for their actions through a meeting with the victim. They can learn how to make amends and move on from what has happened. Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School - School Counselor was awarded $7,000. This summer program is designed to stop learning loss for low-income public school children. The program offers a structured environment with an academic focus, nurturing staff, and individualized attention. Additional funds will be available in the fall.
