Happy To Be Back Senior Center Reopens In Quarryville BY COURTNEY MENGEL

After being shut down in March 2020, the Next Gen Senior Center, 184 S. Lime St., Quarryville, celebrated its reopening on June 4 this year. More than 80 seniors attended the event. Dave Miceli served as the DJ, and C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant provided the food.

The activity center is for residents 60 years of age and up. Seniors can participate in exercises, self-defense classes, singing, games, and Bible studies. “Everyone’s happy to be back,” said Michelle Reeves, manager of Next Gen. “I’m looking forward to new members. A lot of people in Quarryville don’t know we’re here.” See Next Gen pg 3

Rodeos Roped Her In BY COURTNEY MENGEL

hen Larissa Byers, a senior at Solanco High School (SHS), first started riding horses, she was not into rodeo, just trail riding. As she continued to ride, however, Larissa discovered barrel racing, which is a rodeo event where a horse and rider attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around barrels in the fastest time. Larissa fell in love with the event right away. “It’s an adrenaline rush, but that’s what I like,” she said. Larissa is a member of the Pennsylvania High School Rodeo Association and the Central Pennsylvania Youth Rodeo Association. She has competed in several rodeos on the East Coast. Last year, Larissa qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo in barrel racing and pole bending, which is a timed

SHS provided Larissa with a diverse education that helped her decide what she wanted to major in at college, she explained. While at SHS, Larissa completed two accounting classes and loved them. “Having those choices and different ways you can set up your schedule are very beneficial to deciding your future,” she said. Larissa’s dream job is managing and running an equine facility, whether it be racehorses, rehab facilities, vet clinics, or anything in between.

This past March, Larissa qualified for the Junior American in Fort Worth, Texas. While there, she competed in breakaway roping, which is a variation of calf roping where a calf is roped, but not thrown and tied. Unifying Students Through Fitness “Whenever I come to Unified Fitness, I always have a smile on my face,” said Emma Kline, a Unified Fitness buddy and 10th-grade student at Solanco High School (SHS). “The heaviness of everything going on in life and in school just vanishes when we’re out here.” Unified Fitness is a new sixweek program at SHS that promotes inclusion among students through fitness activities. Before the program began, SHS students applied

to serve as buddies for the Life Skills class, and SHS fitness and adapted physical education teacher Kacie Hershey grouped students into pairs. The program is similar to the Special Olympics in that each Life Skills student completes a heptathlon, which focuses on strength, endurance, and agility. The heptathlon provides the Unified Fitness participants with the opportunity to compete in a sequence of seven different fitness exercises and measure their overall performance lev-

els. Students will pick their own events from a wide range of exercise options in accordance with what best suits their individual needs or interests. “I heard about the program in church when Ms. Hershey was talking about it, so I applied,” said Unified Fitness buddy and 11thgrader Blake Cheney. “My favorite part has been getting to know Brandon, Michael, and Tyler (three of the Life Skills students).” When the group members are not completing fitness

exercises, they usually participate in fun games and activities in the gym or outdoors. “It’s awesome. My favorite activities are baseball and Wiffle ball!” exclaimed Brandon LeFevre, one of the Life Skills students. “I joined because I knew it would be fun.” This is the first year of the Unified Fitness program. “The most rewarding part of the program is seeing how much of an impact it’s making,” said Hershey. “It’s been rewarding to see the relationships grow and spread throughout the school. So now when I walk down the halls, I’ll see students who met through the program talking to each other, and I think that’s really special.”

Members of the Red Rose Repeater Association will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27, at 773 County Line Road, Gap. This event is open to the public, and the club particularly recommends stopping by on Saturday between 2 and 6 p.m. The event will close by 2 p.m. on Sunday. For more than 100 years, amateur radio - also called ham radio - has allowed persons from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster or emergency, all without needing a cellphone or the internet. Through amateur radio, people can explore electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other areas of science.

Field Day demonstrates ham radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks, under adverse conditions from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. In 2019, more than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in Field Day; last year, participants numbered almost 19,000. Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed ham radio operations in the United States ranging in age from 9 to 102. For more information about Field Day or amateur radio, visit www.w3rrr.org or visit www.arrl .org/what-is-ham-radio.
