When Larissa Byers, a senior at Solanco High School (SHS), first started riding horses, she was not into rodeo, just trail riding. As she continued to ride, however, Larissa discovered barrel racing, which is a rodeo event where a horse and rider attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around barrels in the fastest time. Larissa fell in love with the event right away. “It’s an adrenaline rush, but that’s what I like,” she said. Larissa is a member of the Pennsylvania High School Rodeo Association and the Central Pennsylvania Youth Rodeo Association. She has competed in several rodeos on the East Coast. Last year, Larissa qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo in barrel racing and pole bending, which is a timed

event where a horse and rider run a weaving or serpentine path around six poles arranged in a line. This event took place in Guthrie, Okla. This past March, Larissa qualified for the Junior American in Fort Worth, Texas. While there, she competed in breakaway roping, which is a variation of calf roping where a calf is roped, but not thrown and tied. This fall, Larissa will further her education at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, where she will pursue an associate degree in accounting while competing on the college’s rodeo team. While there, Larissa would like to get her professional rodeo card, which would allow her to compete in professional rodeos. “Some of the biggest supporters, influencers, helpers, and sponsors are my dad and mom, Bryan and Monica Byers,” she explained. “They have driven me many miles to compete in many different rodeos, and I wouldn’t be able to do any of what I’m doing without them.” Larissa also thanked her roping teachers, JR and Jayme

Myers. “They have always pushed me to keep going and continue doing what I love,” she said. SHS provided Larissa with a diverse education that helped her decide what she wanted to major in at college, she explained. While at SHS, Larissa completed two accounting classes and loved them. “Having those choices and different ways you can set up your schedule are very beneficial to deciding your future,” she said. Larissa’s dream job is managing and running an equine facility, whether it be racehorses, rehab facilities, vet clinics, or anything in between.

After being shut down in March 2020, the Next Gen Senior Center, 184 S. Lime St., Quarryville, celebrated its reopening on June 4 this year. More than 80 seniors attended the event. Dave Miceli served as the DJ, and C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant provided the food. The activity center is for residents 60 years of age and up. Seniors can participate in exercises, self-defense classes, singing, games, and Bible studies. “Everyone’s happy to be back,” said Michelle Reeves, manager of Next Gen. “I’m looking forward to

new members. A lot of people in Quarryville don’t know we’re here.” For the past two years, the senior center has run a food pantry for Quarryville. Anyone within Quarryville who needs food can participate; there is no income or age requirement. Additionally, employees at Next Gen deliver food to those who are unable to leave their homes. Gloria Devonshire has been coming to Next Gen for two years. “I like coming here to meet people my own age that are on the same wavelength, whatever that means!” Devonshire said with a laugh. “We have a good time here.”

Faith noted she was a little overwhelmed to learn that she would speak to her classmates, those in attendance at graduation, and those watching on YouTube. “Like a lot of you, I had a difficult year, but I am truly thankful for the struggles and adversity that we’ve lived through,” said Faith. “I know firsthand this class has grown. Our relationships with each other, our families, and community have grown.” Faith included the most important lesson she has learned this year in her graduation speech. “When going through struggles, no matter how much we can try to muster up our own strength, the only source of joy that helps us through comes from Jesus Christ,” she stated. In her speech, Kayla encouraged her classmates to remain true to themselves. “We are resilient, we are driven, and we are extraordinary. We are the Class of 2021,” she said. “Once we enter the real world, it can be easy to stray from ourselves and our goals. We should not feel pressured to turn into someone who we are not, but feel confident in ourselves and our capabilities to find our own happiness.”

Graduation speaker Michael DeBerdine, Solanco Class of 1983 and CEO of Rhoads Energy in Lancaster, met with seven SHS students a month ago to talk about Solanco and the atmosphere of southern Lancaster County. DeBerdine noted that he was impressed. “This school is blessed with future farmers, teachers, military service, HVAC technicians, pilots, to name a few, and some that are taking a gap year because it’s the right thing to do,” stated DeBerdine. When Solanco School District superintendent Brian Bliss addressed the Class of 2021, he quoted author Lois McMaster Bujold: “Experience suggests it doesn’t matter so much how you got here as what you do after you arrive.” Bliss assured students that they are prepared to begin their post-Solanco life. “Please know what you have with you today you will have tomorrow and each day after that,” he said. “Amazing experiences await you.” Graduation ceremonies for the Solanco Class of 2021 can be viewed at www.youtube.com/solancosd.

Dressed in their caps and gowns, SHS seniors visited Solanco elementary and middle schools and the administration office, where students and staff greeted them with rousing cheers, handmade signs of congratulations, and a performance of “Pomp and Circumstance.” Many elementary and middle school students said they were inspired by the Cap and Gown Walk. Many of the seniors noted that they enjoyed their interaction with the younger students and appreciated visiting the elementary and middle schools they had attended before high school.

Park Programs Announced Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. To register, call 717-295-2055 or visit www.lancastercounty parks.org and click on Online Program Registration. Fire-Starting, for people age 5 and up, will take place on Saturday, June 26, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Participants will safely practice starting a fire with a variety of methods. Attendees may bring their own marshmallows and fixings for s’mores; roasting sticks will be provided. What’s the Buzz About Bees? will be offered on Sunday, June 27, from 11 a.m. to noon. Participants will hear a story, make a craft, and learn about bees. This program is geared for children age 8 and under. Magnify the Natural World, for people of all ages, will be held on June 27 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. As they walk through the meadows and woods, participants will look closely at small things. Attendees should meet at the Muhlenberg Wildflower Meadow parking lot, located at 548 Golf Road, Lancaster. GPS Tic-Tac-Toe, for people of all ages, will be offered on Wednesday, June 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Speedwell Forge County Park. Participants should meet at the trailhead at 480 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz. After a brief introduction to the use of provided handheld GPS units, participants will take to the trails. They should dress for the weather and for trails that may be muddy. When registering, people must specify the number of GPS units they wish to borrow; at the event, their driver’s license or keys will be held until units are returned. Why Add Hiking to Your Fitness Program? will be offered for people over 50 on Tuesday, July 6, from 1 to 2:15 p.m. During a hike on the Lancaster Central Park’s Scout Trail, a naturalist will explain the benefits of hiking and will give tips on safety, equipment, and ways to get the most out of a hike. Registration and payment are due by noon on Friday, July 2.
