Conestoga Herb Guild features local mushroom farmer

On June 14, the Conestoga Herb Guild held its monthly program at VFW Post 219 in Millersville. Guild members and gardeners from around the community gathered to learn about growing techniques, exchange seeds, enjoy plant-themed snacks and listen to presentations from two guest speakers.

SNM posts Christmas in July fundraiser

Solanco

Neighborhood Ministries

(SNM) will hold a fundraiser at Britain Hill Venue and Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville, on Tuesday, July 25. The event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., and it will include a silent auction, live music and multiple food trucks.

The theme of the fundraiser is “Christmas in July,” and attendees are encouraged to wear green and

red to bring the Christmas spirit to summertime. Tickets are free, but SNM will accept monetary donations and small, unwrapped gifts, which it will give to families at Christmastime. Gifts can include items such as coloring books, toy cars, nail polish and other items for children. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available to take pictures with families during the fundraiser, and the live music will include traditional Christmas

songs and carols.

The silent auction will feature a variety of items, such as tickets to Sight & Sound Theatre, passes to Longwood Gardens, gift cards for local restaurants, holiday crafts made from driftwood and woodworking pieces.

SNM began to host an annual fundraiser three years ago to support its various community service projects. In addition to raising money for projects such as the

food bank in Quarryville, SNM wanted to use the fundraiser as a way to draw people in the community together and educate them on needs that are often unmet.

“Everyone around you may be going through something. We want to ask people, ‘Do you know your neighbor?’” said Teresa Dolan, executive director of SNM. “We’re trying to educate people on the needs of the community that go unseen.”

As its first guest speaker, the Conestoga Herb Guild welcomed Drew Zimmerman of New Providence, who offered a presentation about mushrooms and their growing process. He shared information on different procedures that can be taken advantage of when growing mushrooms, such as pasteurizing the spores by planting them among woodchips. Zimmerman also detailed how gardeners can maximize the use of their space by placing mushroom spores in areas that are provided with shade by crops such as pepper and tomato plants. He explained that if mushrooms are grown outside with some access to sunlight, they will have a higher content of Vitamin D. At the end of the presentation, Zimmerman handed out red cap mushroom spores for participants to plant in their own gardens. “He has a real commitment to new forms of agriculture, and he always encourages people to grow their own food,” said Susan Atkins, president of the Conestoga Herb Guild.

While tickets are free, those who plan to attend must register by visiting https:// tinyurl.com/snmchristmas.

SNM has recently seen an increase in the number of families requesting assistance, which Dolan attributed to rising prices and the organization’s move to a more visible location. SNM relocated to South Church Street in Quarryville in September and has since made several changes to better suit the community’s needs.

Previously, the food bank prepacked boxes of items to distribute to families. Recently, SNM implemented a choice pantry model, which allows families to shop for the items that they need the most. All of the food is ranked by its nutritional value and organized into groups based on the levels of sodium, sugar and saturated fat. The color-coded system allows patrons to find the items they need the most and is intended to make it easier for those with diabetes or high cholesterol to shop for food. SNM will provide a list of the food bank’s inventory to those who are unable to visit the food bank due to their work schedules or mobility issues. They can choose which items they need from the list, and the food bank’s volunteers will pack their order for them.

“Our families are really happy to have the choice. It minimizes them getting something they don’t need and

helps us with our inventory,” Dolan said. “We keep track of what people request the most so we can make sure it’s stocked, and we try to make sure at least 80% of our food has a high nutritional value.”

Solanco hosts wrestling camp

Donations needed for library’s new building

The Lancaster Public Library is continuing its Fabulas Campaign to help fund its new building, which will officially open on June 27. As of May, the organization still needed to raise $600,000 of the $10 million required for the project.

The Solanco Rubicon Wrestling Camp was held from June 12 to 14 and included technique, live wrestling, cross-fit training, goal-setting,

and personal development as demonstrated. The event drew a total of 37 attendees from Penn Manor, Lampeter-Strasburg and Donegal.

The clinicians were Dan Neff, Navy University assistant coach, Solanco’s first PIAA state champion, an NCAA All-American, and a

In its new location, the library will anchor the first two floors of the Christian Street Parking Garage, facing Barney Ewell Plaza in the 100 block of North Queen Street. The library will feature more usable space, children’s and young adult areas, program spaces and meeting rooms, Wi-Fi and an outdoor terrace. Additionally, the new Business and Reference Center and its professional librarians will continue to provide free access to databases and other information to serve local businesses.

The library’s services range from story times and STEM programs for kids to job-hunting resources for adults.

Brianna Harvey, Samantha Kelly, Morgan Krauss and Reed Morehouse.

Seventh-graders earning a spot on the list are Giavonna Brown, Cassidy Cameron, Sara Dalrymple, Jackson Eckardt, Gabrielle Getshall, Kieran Groff, Makenna Herr, Maura Housekeeper, Avery Hughes, Autumn Myers, Sophia Petrauskas, Derek Phipps, Colin Ryan, Sage Spangler, Kyle Townsend, Claudia Underwood, Henry Wolf, Jesse Wood and Luca Zello.

Grade six students named to the highest honor roll are Reed Anderson, Margaret Bayler, Lyla Eidson, Reinhold Frey, Eliana Gorgo, Travis Henry, Kendall Housekeeper, Ari Martin, Todd Maynard, Aoife McAndrews, Alan Miller, Caleb Oberholtzer, Jordyn Pabon, Trevor Prange, Adyson Rose, Chloe Sage, Makenzie Scherer, Tristyn Spangler, Charlotte Stem, Olivia Stutzman, Dylan Townsend, Cayden Wolfe, Blake Young and Weston Young.

In 2020, Zimmerman created Unkle Fungus Mushrooms, a local business that initially supplied gourmet mushrooms to restaurants and markets on a large scale. Zimmerman has since shifted his focus to growing seasonal mushrooms and vegetables to sell at his roadside stand in New Providence and educating the community on the usefulness of mushrooms.

Each of the Conestoga Herb Guild’s meetings highlights a plant that has been selected as the herb of the month. Guild member Erica Runkles offered the meeting’s second presentation, speaking on June’s featured herb: flax. Runkles talked about the usefulness of flax as a fiberrich food, source of linseed oil and material for textiles.

Runkles also highlighted the PA Flax Project, an organization that seeks to promote the growing and usage of flax throughout the state. The project provides educational materials on flax and advocates for its use. In addition to providing commercial opportunities, flax also offers an alternative to synthetic materials and requires the use of fewer chemical treatments. To incorporate the highlighted topics of the meeting in the refreshments, Atkins prepared flax muffins and flaxseed cookies for participants to enjoy.

The Conestoga Herb Guild meets once a month, and each meeting focuses on a new topic that relates to home gardening and using herbs as food and medicine. “There’s a lot of garden groups in the county, but what makes us

unique is that we focus on herbs,” Atkins said. “I think culinary and medicinal herbalism is something that interests a lot of people, and we give people experiences with rare plants they may not have found otherwise.”

For more information about the Conestoga Herb Guild, contact Mary Ann Steinhauer at flygirl1947@outlook.com.
