hestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, will host a Porches and Posies Garden Tour to benefit sanctuary renovations of the church. This rain-or-shine garden tour will take place on Friday, July 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

C

Notable changes to the church include the newly exposed balcony, the restored ceiling with gold leaf details, antique German stained glass windows, two fieldstone additions on either side of the bell tower, and the wooden pews circa 1914. The tour will consist of 12 different homes located in Willow Street, Holtwood, Quarryville, Pequea, Peach Bottom, and Drumore. Among them are two Amish gardens, a lawn with 350 roses, water features, and more. “This is a great opportunity for people to have fun and enjoy the day,” stated Cindy Derr, member of CLPC. “As a congregation, we open the church to people, and now we’re opening homes and gardens to them.” See Garden Tour pg 7

Students Compete At National Event The Solanco Odyssey of the Mind team recently placed seventh in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Orlando, Fla. The members of the Odyssey of the Mind team are Katie Jensen, Dennis Kretzing, Autumn Butler, Josie Janssen, Brady Janssen, Taelor Martin, and Aidan Todd. The group’s chosen problem involved a superhero escaping from danger using a pair of socks that convey a special power. See Odyssey pg 7

“Summer Art Surprise!” grab bags will contain a clothespin dragonfly project.

Incorporated in Lancaster County, Poiema Visual Arts (PVA) is a Pennsylvania-based network infrastructure facilitating discipleship, education, and community for Christian visual artists. Currently, PVA is operating out of several home offices until it establishes a main office. In the fall of 2019, a handful of creative individuals met on the campus of Lancaster Bible College to hear the personal story and vision of Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of PVA. Miller shared how questions regarding faith and art over the last 20 years had led him to dream about a network of Christian visual artists. In September 2020, PVA appointed its first board of directors to help lead and steward the organization. Efforts to procure nonprofit status are currently in progress, and the formation of Miller’s dream continues.

Her primary documentation includes birth and death certificates, land grants, wills, and more. Sun Safety Tips Posted As temperatures rise and outdoor activities increase, individuals are reminded to practice sun safety. W hether heading to the beach or the backyard, it is important to protect skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. Patient First physicians have several suggestions to protect the skin. A broadspectrum sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF should be used, even when it is cloudy. Sunscreen should be applied 15 to 20 minutes before going outside. Widebrimmed hats can help shade the neck and face, but they

do not offer complete protection, and sunscreen should be used on these sensitive areas. Lightweight sun-protective clothing should be worn. Long sleeves and long pants also offer protection from the sun. Sunglasses that block UV rays should be worn. Sun damage accumulates and occurs even when people are not actively trying to soak up a few rays. Whether walking the dog or mowing the lawn, sun damage adds up over time. Newborns and children are especially sensitive to the sun’s rays. Protecting their skin is crucial.

Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are

in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swimat-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road.

During 2020, the amphitheater at Long’s Park sat empty. For 2021, Dave Wauls, president of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation, is looking forward to filling the venue with eight different bands. “Everybody is excited, and we anticipate bigger crowds,” said Wauls, who noted that the food trucks will be back for hungry concertgoers. Concerts are planned beginning Sunday, July 11. Performances will start at 7:30 p.m. each Sunday through Aug. 29.

bands to play the venue can take several years. He listed scheduling factors for both the performer and the amphitheater, along with travel arrangements and current visas for the performers. “Several years ago, we had Old Blind Dogs from Scotland (play a concert),” he said. “It took us six years to finally have them perform here.” This year, the opening concert on July 11 will feature Bakithi Kumalo, a South African bass player who was one of the top session musicians in his country when Paul Simon went there to develop his album “Graceland” in 1985. “Simon invited him to America to finish studio sessions,” said Zuke of the Grammy Awardwinning Kumalo, who eventually settled in the U.S. Both Maggie Rose, who will perform on July 18, and Thornetta Davis, who will perform on July 25, are award-winning artists. “Maggie is amazing,” stated Zuke, who noted that Rose makes her home in Nashville. “You don’t typically think of funk, soul, blues, and rock in terms of the Grand Ole Opry,” he noted, adding that Rose has appeared there many times. Davis, a recipient of several Detroit Music Association awards, is known as that city’s Queen of the Blues. ER TE OK TA SM L ES A RE

Brad Zuke (left) and Dave Wauls are looking forward to the Long’s Park Concert Series that will be held on Sunday evenings in July and August.

Additional August concerts will include Southern country singer Paul Thorn on Aug. 8. Vanessa Collier, who will play on Aug. 15, has received blues music awards as an instrumentalist for horn, but Zuke noted that she also plays guitar and sings. He stated that the Kenny Rogers Band, which will appear on Aug. 22, is the real deal. “(These) are the musicians that played with Kenny as opposed to being a cover band. These guys helped write the music and played the original music,” he said. On Aug. 29, a Live Aid Tribute Show will celebrate one of the world’s biggest concerts by featuring talented local musicians. Readers who would like to know more about the concerts, which will follow current health protocols, may visit www.longspark.org.

Brad Zuke, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that each year the group endeavors to bring acts that represent a wide range of musical genres. In 2020, many of the bands that were booked to play just happened to be fronted by women. “It looked like it was going to be the year of the woman,” noted Zuke. “When everything was canceled, agents and bands wrote back and said, ‘Can we just move ahead to next year?’ That was our starting point (in creating this year’s schedule).” Indeed, only The Big Takeover, a reggae band scheduled to perform on Aug. 1, was not on the 2020 roster. Zuke noted that contracting

Giant Expands Flashfood App Availability The Giant Company recently announced that it is rolling out the Flashfood app to all Giant and Martin’s stores following a successful pilot. Designed to reduce food waste and help customers save money on fresh food items nearing their best-before date, the Flashfood partnership has helped the Giant Company divert more than 250,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli and bakery products that are nearing their best-before date at significantly reduced prices. First introduced in May at four Giant stores in Lancaster, Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores. The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, with additional stores joining each month. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their bestbefore dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store. In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners. Visit www.giantfoodstores .com or www.martinsfoods.com for more information.
