Nonprofit offers free therapy to veterans

Deepin the woods in Conestoga lies a 21-acre property populated by lush flora and thoroughbred horses. The Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm, located on Indian Hill Road, was created by Dave Anderson in 2015 for one purpose: to offer veterans a place of peace, recovery and comradery.

Building Bridges began by offering free equine therapy to veterans, using six thoroughbred horses. The number of veterans participating in the program has continued to grow each year, with the foundation now serving twice as many people as it did in 2015.

Building Bridges employs two equine therapists, one of whom is a veteran himself. Equine therapy is used to help veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other conditions from their time in the military. All of the

foundation’s services remain free due to community fundraising and sponsors.

In 2018, Building Bridges created the Vet’s Café. Every Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, veterans are invited to gather at the café, which is stationed atop a scenic hill on the property. The private atmosphere, free from the sounds of traffic or commotion, offers veterans an opportunity to connect with those who have had similar experiences. Local grocery stores provide pastries, cookies and coffee for the café. “The biggest thing that happens there is the conversation,” said Joe Campbell, chief operating officer of Building Bridges. “Sometimes it’s riotous laughter; sometimes it’s a sedated discussion about things that are near and dear to them.”

Building Bridges serves veterans from across Lancaster County and sees participation from many residents of the Southern End. As See Building Bridges pg 5

Providing a support system for children

Children experience more healthy and happy development when surrounded by caring family members and positive role models. Ready to help provide children with these supportive people is COBYS Family Services.

Headquartered at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, COBYS provides a wide variety of support services for children in need in Lancaster County and surrounding counties. But what COBYS is really all about is giving all childeren a chance to

grow into well-adjusted adults.

“We know that those support systems - families, biological or chosen - get you through life,” said Anne Stokes, the director of development and communications for COBYS, “so you can have kids who can relate to others and forge lifelong relationships. It’s the key to a successful way. We don’t want to give up on them. Kids are now coming into care with layers and layers of trauma.”

A piece of history restored

In the fall of 2022, LancasterHistory staff member Randy Harris noticed that multiple gravestones at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lancaster were in need of attention. The three gravestones were leaning heavily and were at risk of falling over completely without the proper attention. Although the historic cemetery is home to many graves, these particular gravestones preserve an important piece of Lancaster’s history, as they belong to Lydia Hamilton Smith and her two sons, William and Isaac. Harris contacted the African American Historical Society of

South Central Pennsylvania and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes to share his concerns about the gravesites. The organizations

partnered with LancasterHistory to devise a plan to restore the burial site. Andre Dominguez, a LancasterHistory volunteer and local historian, See Grave restoration pg 6

Southern End Sluggers claim tournament crown

The Southern End Sluggers, a youth baseball team made up of players from Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, Conestoga Valley, Octorara and Pequea Valley, recently captured the Essex Express Baseball Father’s Day Summer Classic.

“Last fall, we won three tournaments,” said coach Nate Galbreath. “This tournament made it four in a row. We have kids of equal talent, so we bat all 12, and every kid gets their time on the bench.”

The tournament was held in Essex, Md.

The Sluggers opened with a 12-1 Saturday morning win over the Owings Mills’ Spartans. Later that evening, the Sluggers settled for an 8-8 tie against the Arlington All-Stars.

“The Saturday games were for seeding, so we went into the single elimination Sunday games as the second

seed,” Galbreath explained.

Sunday morning, the Sluggers defeated In the Dirt 8-1 and in the afternoon pulled out a 4-3, come-from-behind win over the Blue Chips to get to the finals. There the Sluggers defeated the top

“It was a total team effort,” said Galbreath. “We pitched well; made a lot of great plays defensively, including turning multiple double plays; and had some great throws

home from the outfield to nail runners at the plate. Everyone put the ball in play, and we had very few strikeouts against some really good pitching,” he added. “We had multiple extra base hits, and we ran the bases really well.”

Master Watershed Stewards to host webinar

The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program will host its fourth annual native tree and shrub sale this August. Prior to the sale, the program will host a free webinar on Wednesday, July 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to help Pennsylvania residents learn more about the tree sale fundraiser and the species included this year.

During the webinar, Penn State Master Watershed Stewards and Penn State Master Gardeners will review the plants that will be available in the sale, discuss selecting plants for specific properties and conditions, and provide order and pickup information for the sale. In advance of the webinar, registrants will have an opportunity to submit questions about choosing the right tree or shrub for their property. Planting native trees and shrubs can help to turn a landscape into a

wildlife wonderland while improving local stream health and water quality.

To register, visit https:// extension.psu.edu/master -watershed-steward-q-a-for -native-tree-and-shrub-sale.

For more information about the webinar, the sale or the Master Watershed Steward program, contact program coordinator Meagan HopkinsDoerr at 610-696-3500 or mxh1135@psu.edu.

The Coalition of Homeschoolers Across Lancaster County (CHALC) honored 59 homeschool seniors during its 28th annual graduation ceremony on May 26.

The ceremony was held at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church and included music performances by members of the senior class, a commencement speech from the keynote speaker, a video collage of the graduates, graduation speeches from two senior students and the awarding of diplomas by parents.

The keynote address was given by John Blowers, an executive and leader in the small business, nonprofit and local government sectors for more than 30 years. Blowers is currently a member of the leadership team at Martin Flooring Inc. in Fivepointville and serves on the board of directors for Lancaster County

Higgins, the daughter of Brad and Tammy Higgins, earned a Mason Dixon Academic Honors diploma with Leadership Distinction and Honors for Performance in Fine Arts. Higgins will attend Regent University Honors College to pursue a degree in secondary education.

The graduates performed

Kiwanis presents donation

Division 16 of Pennsylvania Kiwanis recently presented a check to Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic to support its work with children with cleft lip and other craniofacial conditions. The clinic provides all the care needed, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

The money donated was earned through a fundraiser at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. Kiwanis Clubs in the division sold tickets to the play “Sister Act” and also provided themed baskets for a silent auction.

Division 16 represents nine local Kiwanis clubs in Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties: Annville-Cleona, Centennial (an internet club), Elizabethtown, Greater Reading-Berks, Lebanon, Lititz, New Holland, NorlancoRheems and Palmyra. The organization’s motto is “Kids Need Kiwanis.”

Head coach Dillon Costrello announced that Solanco girls’ volleyball will hold a skills camp and a tryout prep camp, both in August.

Skills camp, for girls going into grades seven to 10, will be held on Wednesday to Friday, Aug. 2 to 4, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the high school. the foundation has grown over the years, it has made an effort to engage in community events such as the Solanco and West Lampeter fairs and Oregon Dairy’s Celebration of America event. The number of veterans participating in the Vet’s Café has continued to grow each year.

Once a month, the Vet’s Café hosts a guest speaker to cover any of a wide range of subjects relating to PTSD and life after service in the armed forces.

Building Bridges plans to open an additional weekly timeslot at the Vet’s Café to make it

accessible for younger veterans who may work day jobs.

For those interested in participating in equine therapy at Building Bridges, Campbell extends an offer: visit the Vet’s Café on a Thursday morning. The invitation includes families of veterans as well, and Campbell said he will show what the farm has to offer. “Immediately when you go up the driveway, there’s a sense of comfort and safety,” he added.

LANDSCAPE DESIGNING

Grave restoration frompg 1

created a conservation report for the site and worked with Mosko Cemetery Monument Services to start the process of resetting and stabilizing the gravestones.

Dominguez and Mosko used two 12-foot-tall cranes to lift the headstones, each of which weighed over 800 pounds. After the stones were moved aside, the cranes were used to pick up the bases, allowing the Dominguez and Mosko to dig down and level the ground with stone and marble chips. The base and headstones were then moved back to their proper place and sealed to prevent water from causing any further destabilization. Dominguez then

cleaned all three of the grave markers.

Harris and Dominguez installed a commemorative marker at the gravesite following the restoration. The marker offers information on the Smith family and the significance of its role in history. Smith was a close friend of Thaddeus Stevens, and she worked as his housekeeper. The two were heavily involved in the Underground Railroad and actively worked for the liberation of slaves during the 19th century. “There have been questions about their relationship and lots of misinformation throughout the years, including varied

accounts of where (Smith) is buried,” Harris said. “This is another phase of continuing to find accurate information on two pivotal members of American history.” A dedication ceremony for the new historical marker was held on June 28.

LancasterHistory is currently in the design phase for a large project to create the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Smith Center for History and Democracy in downtown Lancaster. The building will be located on the corner of South Queen Street and Vine Street, and it will be part of the Lancaster County Convention Center. In the new installation, visitors will have

a chance to learn about Lancaster’s role in the Civil War and the lives of Stevens and Smith, as well as others who were involved with abolitionist efforts. “These people were considered fringe characters with no grounding in reality. They pushed the envelope until they brought more people to their side,” Harris said. “We want to convey the importance of these people’s lives and what it really meant to be an abolitionist and combat the horrors of slavery.”

LancasterHistory hopes to begin construction on the project by the spring of 2025. For more information, visit www.lancasterhistory.org.

Trout Unlimited hosts fishing derby

A fishing derby organized by the Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited (DTU) in collaboration with the Lancaster Special Olympics took place on June 17. The event was hosted at Hugh Wenger’s residence in Elizabethtown and planned by lead organizers Wenger; Claire Landis, president of DTU; and Tony Watts, a member of the Special Olympics leadership team.

A total of 10 athletes,

accompanied by their guests, participated in the derby, receiving assistance from 29 DTU volunteers. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (F&BC) provided fishing rods, while Kinsey’s Outdoors supplied the bait.

To facilitate the smooth movement of supplies and assist guests, Messick’s Equipment offered a utility transport vehicle. Andy Desko, aquatic resource program spe-

cialist from the Pennsylvania F&BC, acquired a special fishing event permit and provided guidance for the event.

The derby began a 9 a.m. in the well-stocked pond, showcasing the contestants’ angling skills. The contestants successfully caught a variety of species, including catfish, bluegills and smallmouth bass. By noon, the Olympians had collectively reeled in more than 140 fish, with Caroline

Whitson leading the pack by catching 25 fish. The attendees also had the opportunity to observe the red-winged blackbirds, listen to the croaking bullfrogs and catch glimpses of turtles surfacing from the water.

At noon, DTU member Stan Shenk and his crew served lunch to all the participants. The meal was accompanied by snacks provided by Utz and Pepperidge Farm.

adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.

“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”

According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time

frame.

“We receive a good portion of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes.

“We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible. It’s a challenge that we continue to look to meet.”

COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.

“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home.

They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide trauma-focused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”

COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has

been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.

“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”

“Dinner With Jesus” VBS slated

High View Church of God, 2470 Leaman Road, Ronks, will host “Dinner With Jesus” vacation Bible school (VBS) on Sunday, July 30, through Thursday, Aug. 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Classes will be offered for people from infants through adults. The daily schedule involves music, crafts, a Bible lesson, games and snacks. On Aug. 3, starting

at 5:30 p.m., the church will provide a free hot dog, drink and snack for each attendee. After the pandemic, when people were often unable to gather to share meals together, High View sought to choose a VBS theme that reflects on and teaches about the hospitality and gatherings in which Jesus spent time with family, friends and acquaintances.

Each evening, an offering will be received for Mercy Chefs. This faith-based, nonprofit disaster and humanitarian relief association provides restaurantquality meals to victims, volunteers and first responders in natural disasters and national emergencies, and it partners with other organizations to provide food service in underserved commu-

nities across the country. Mercy Chefs’ initiatives include helping to develop community kitchens, delivering grocery boxes and supporting people in food-insecure communities through job skills training, single parent cooking classes and budget recipe creation. To learn more, visit www.mercy chefs.com.

To register a child for VBS, visit www.hvcog.org and click on the “Dinner With Jesus” slider. Anyone with questions may contact the church office at 717687-0523.

will be entered in a drawing for a gift certificate to American Music Theatre or Sight & Sound Theatre. Tickets will be available in advance from church members or at the bazaar until the time of the drawing.

For more information, contact the church office at 717397-9722 or office@lancaster moravian.org.
