The butterfly children

When Kiba Cedeno was born in January 2015, the lives of his family members would never be the same. Kiba was born with a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that causes the loss of the majority of skin and muscle on his legs, as well as other patches on his body. “When he was born, the doctor said, ‘I hope this isn’t what I think it is,’” said Kiba’s grandmother Dana Cedeno. “It was, and it turned our whole world upside down.”

Kiba’s family learned that he was born with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a condition they had never heard of before. There is no cure for EB; the primary treatment entails wound care and pain management. As Kiba’s family members worked to manage his condition, they realized that there was very little awareness of EB. Few organizations exist that assist families who are affected by the disease. Kiba’s family decided to create Kisses for EB, a nonprofit organization dedicated to informing

reinvents history

There’s ancient history. There’s modern history.

And then there’s living history. At Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, history is alive and thriving. A Pennsylvania German heritage site situated at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is an exploratory learning tool and a portal to the locale’s past. Among its highlights are its interactive nature, craft

demonstrations and volunteers dressed in period garb.

“George and Henry Landis envisioned Landis Valley being a Williamsburg in central Pennsylvania,” said Timothy Essig, a museum educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “They envisioned this living history museum of Pennsylvania Dutch in southcentral Pennsylvania. There are multiple variations of EB, but they all share many of the primary symptoms. In the United States, over 200 children are born with the condition every year. It is

estimated that 25,000 people in the U.S. currently live with EB. Children with EB are often referred to as “butterfly children,” due to their skin being as fragile as a butterfly’s wings.

Kisses for EB regularly hosts fundraisers throughout Lancaster County, which it uses to help families across the country in a variety of

One of Kisses for EB’s primary goals when fundraising is to grant families an opportunity to attend a biennial conference hosted by debra, an international charity dedicated to researching a cure for EB. In 2022, Kisses for EB raised enough money to send 10 families to the conference in Denver, Colo. During the conference, families attend a variety of breakout sessions that discuss topics such as new drug trials for EB treatment, methods of managing the condition and gadgets that can improve patients’ quality of life. At the 2022 conference, Kisses for EB gave out gift cards to families in attendance.

Kisses for EB is currently fundraising with the goal of sending 20 families to the next debra See Kisses for EB pg 2

What’s in your garden?

Many people tend gardens, from small beds of flowers to full-scale produce gardens rife with vegetables and herbs. But when managing a garden, there are several factors to consider: How do you arrange the seeds for maximum yield? Which insects are helpful in a garden, and which will wreak havoc?

To shed some light on common garden-dwelling critters, the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will host “Insects - Friend or Foe?” on Thursday, July 27, from 6 to 7 p.m. The informational event will feature a presentation from See Library event pg 6

conference, which will be held in July 2024 in Georgia. Since the organization is not large enough to qualify for the yearly ExtraGive event in Lancaster, it coordinates several smaller fundraisers such as a 5K race in the spring and a giveaway drawing in the fall.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, Kisses for EB will host a benefit motorcycle and car ride through the Southern End. The ride will begin at Refton Fire Company, 99 Church St., Refton. Registration will start at 8 a.m., followed by the ride at 10 a.m. Riders will return to the fire hall by 12:30 p.m. for food and prize drawings, and those who do not wish to participate in the ride itself are still invited to attend. Celebration planned at reservoir

In celebration of Lakes Appreciation Month, July, an event will take place on Saturday, July 29, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Jim Neary’s Bait & Tackle, 212 Spruce Grove Road, Kirkwood. The inaugural event took place in 2022.

Conservation organizations such as the Octoraro Watershed Association, Lancaster Conservancy, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Lancaster Clean Water Partners will be on hand. Attendees may learn about macroinvertebrates and stream health from the Lancaster County Conservation District and aquatic invasive species and aquatic insects from the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Stewards. The Stroud Water Research Center will share how individuals may help improve the health of lakes and streams, and it will offer water chemistry and water sampling activities. Attendees may also learn about conservation projects by the Federal EPA, TeamAg Inc and the Southern Lancaster County Farmer’s Sportsman’s Association.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary - Flotilla 19-4 will conduct vessel safety courtesy checks from 2 to 6 p.m. for both powered and unpowered vessels.

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission will provide publications on regulations and safety topics. Additionally, the PFBC will be accompanied by native reptiles and amphibians, including an Eastern rat snake and a box turtle. The Pennsylvania Game Commission will display its Operation Game Thief educational trailer.

The Oxford Library will highlight a selection of environment-related books for youth and adult readers.

Food trucks will be on hand, and complimentary samples of grilled snakehead, an invasive species of fish that has been identified in the reservoir, will be offered. Chester Water Authority will provide bottled water and iced tea, plus individually wrapped soft pretzels and pretzel dogs from Philly Pretzel Factory.

Lisa Sanchez, a naturalist from the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. Sanchez will explain how to distinguish the types of insects that can be found in a garden and different methods for removing unwanted bugs without the use of pesticides. The program will be geared toward adults and interested youngsters. Although walk-ins will be accepted, the Quarryville Library asks that attendees register ahead of time at https://tinyurl.com/library insectevent.

“If you know what the Colorado potato beetle looks like, you can remove it before it lays eggs and you end up with a hundred eating your plants,” Sanchez said. “Same with any other bugs - if you can identify the adult and get rid of it, it might save your garden.”

Sharon Roche, Quarryville Library’s program manager, wanted to offer the event not only because of patrons with their own home gardens, but also due to the library’s own community garden. The garden is maintained by former library employee Janice Hohenwarter, who continued to manage it after she entered retirement. Members of the public are allowed to take whatever produce they need from the garden. “A large part of the draw is our community garden, which we don’t use any pesticides in,” Roche said. “Anyone is welcome to take what they need, whether it’s produce or flowers.”

In addition to offering free produce to the community, the Quarryville Library also utilizes the garden for many of its programs. The library recently began to offer children’s garden tours, where kids can pick fruits and vegetables while they learn about what is growing there.

Hohenwarter is always accepting volunteers to help with the garden’s maintenance. She often receives help from teenagers who volunteer to acquire service hours, and assisting with the garden provides an opportunity for them to learn more about horticulture. To become a volunteer, contact the library at library@quarryville library.org.

On Thursday, Aug. 17, the Quarryville Library will host another event in collaboration with the Parks and Recreation Department. The event will offer insight on picking produce and preserving fresh food. In September, Master Gardeners from Penn State University will hold a flower arranging program at the library.

Located in Manheim Township, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum consists of 40 acres of general Pennsylvania Dutch living history surrounded by 60 acres of fields and farmland. Nearly 60 buildings have been erected on the property, some of which are historically interpreted constructions that provide the village with its 18th- and 19thcentury atmosphere and others of

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a state-operated facility that is also supported by the Landis Valley Associates.

“Our goal continues to be to share the story of this unique culture in American history,” said Essig. “When you come to Landis Valley, you’re going to learn about agriculture, different trades and the architecture of the overall German contribution to the American culture. We do tell a big story.”

The peoples who would later come to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch immigrated to the United States and the area in three distinct waves, from the 1680s to the 1840s. Brothers and Landis Valley founders Henry and George Landis collected more than 200,000 objects related to these immingrants’ culture and stored them in buildings that, in 1925, became the foundation upon which Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum was built.

When the state became involved with its operation in the mid-1950s, Landis Valley was transformed into the living history village it is today.

“Henry and George Landis were two men focused on their culture,” said Essig. “They weren’t millionaires, but they spent their entire lives collecting artifacts of that culture.”

Landis Valley

frompg 8

Today, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors each year for school field trips, family vacation visits, bus trips from destinations mainly east of the Mississippi River, special events and facility rentals. The visitors come mostly from southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and from as far away as the rest of the 50 states and even other countries.

The mission of Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is supported by hundreds of volunteers.

“History is not ‘was’; history ‘is,’” said Essig. “You experience history when you visit Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. History comes to life.”
