Brian Robertson (left), Jen Harris (center), and Charity Grove invite the community to attend the firstever Barbecue and Beer fundraiser to support the Solanco Midget Football Association.
Midget Football Association To Host Fundraiser he Solanco Midget Football Association will host its inaugural “Barbecue and Beer” fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 14. This rain-or-shine event will take place at the Osbornia Farm, 74 Clendenin Road., Quarryville, from 5 to 9 p.m. As a nonprofit organization, the mission of the Solanco Midget Football Association is to instruct youths in the skills of football so they can play, have fun, and make friends. One of the association’s top priorities is fundraising for the midget football program. “We care about the kids and the
T
program, so we try our best to keep the cost down for parents,” said Jen Harris, president of the association. At the event, there will be a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia signed by professional athletes, giveaways, music, a photo booth, and a cornhole tournament. A prize will be given to the winning cornhole team. “This event will be super fun,” stated Harris. “We didn’t get to have a season last year due to COVID, so I look at this like a nice welcome back event.” Ticket purchases will provide attendees with food and beverages from Enck’s Custom Catering. A limited number of tickets are available and must be purchased in advance at
https://bit.ly/bbqandbeer. “We wanted to get the community involved in a fundraising event to support the association,” said association treasurer Brian Robertson. “We’re like a big family and want to keep the program going for another 40 years.” Harris noted that this event will be different than what the association has done in the past. “Our board members try to get creative and do things out of the box,” she stated. Corbin and Riccomini were talking about the amount of land they have at the school, so they came up with the idea of planting a garden and allowing students to participate. This idea was put into motion during the spring of this year, when Corbin

“It was a great experience, and I look forward to trying to qualify again next year,” said Wagner. Nearly 4,000 players around the world vied for a place in the championship, so to qualify was an accomplishment in itself. Wagner shot a one over par 73 in the qualifier at Doylestown Country Club and then won a playoff, parring the first hole to earn the final berth. “Both courses played to more than 7,100 yards,” noted Wagner’s high school coach, Greg Minnich. “I’m sure it was a great experience, especially playing courses set up by the USGA to their tournament standards.”

scarecrow and lay kindness rocks in the garden. As vegetables ripen, Corbin plans to either drop off the food at the students’ houses or donate it to a local food bank. “Our idea behind the garden club was that we want our kids to enjoy school and know that learning happens in the classroom, but learning can happen outside of the classroom as well and it can be fun,” said Corbin. “School is a fun place, and we can build on the interests of the kids so they can learn something they can use when they’re older.” In addition to the academic benefit of the garden club, there is a social benefit as well because the students interact across grade levels. Corbin said the club might plant another set of crops in the fall and welcome new members. “It’s just really nice to see the kids using their brains, problem solving, working together, collaborating, and talking through situations of how we can do things the best,” stated Corbin. “It’s been a fun time. I’ve enjoyed working with the kids and seeing them get excited.”

and Riccomini selected 10 students from kindergarten through fourth grade. Permission letters were then sent to the students’ parents. “We wanted to start small to make sure we were successful because we didn’t know how it would go,” said Corbin. To begin, third- and fourthgraders used graph paper to map out the garden and decide what vegetables and herbs they wanted to plant. The students did the math to calculate the spacing of everything, and they built a fence around the area. The students planted tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, peppers, watermelon, squash, and some herbs. After everything was finished, Corbin and the students planned to meet periodically over the summer to maintain the garden, water the plants, and taste some of the vegetables. “Next time we meet (in July), I’d like to teach them how to do a refrigerator pickle,” stated Corbin. Corbin noted that she hopes to design a wooden sign for the garden that has the names of the club members on it. She also mentioned that she wants to get a

The Pennsylvania Railroad Museum recently purchased the three existing books from J. Arthur Moore’s four-book collection related to his fictional Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia. This railroad shares a name with a real railroad in Nevada. Moore began writing the four books 40 years ago. W hen “Summer of Two Worlds” was finished, it was released in manuscript form; in 2015, it was first published, and it was recently republished in its third edition. “Summer at Stewart Creek” was recently revised and then released on Dec. 1, 2020, and “Twelfth Winter,”
was released on June 1. The remaining book, “Stranded in Snow Shoe,” is due out in early 2022; this book, “Summer of Two Worlds” and “Twelfth Winter” make up the “Summer of Two Worlds” trilogy. “Summer of Two Worlds” has also been released alongside two other titles by Moore: “Journey Into Darkness,” a story in four parts, and “Blake’s Story: Revenge and Forgiveness.” At the time, these three books were released as Civil War and Native American historical fiction for middle grade through adult readers. “Summer at Stewart Creek”
includes photo illustrations of an HO-scale model railroad that the author created when envisioning the book’s setting. The cover photos for this book feature the Tahoo, a locomotive in the collection at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. The Tahoo was used on the real-life Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Nevada. All Moore’s titles are available at the Landis Valley Farm Museum, Cricket’s Antiques and Garden Market on Route 322 in Glenmoore, and online at www.jarthurmoore.com, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon. Books can also be ordered through independent book stores.

County Treasures - Heritage Press Museum BY ANN MEAD ASH
LET’S GET SOCIAL facebook.com/townlively instagram.com/townlivelyepc
The Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster, has its roots in the Lancaster Cultural History Museum, once located in the Lancaster Trust Performing Arts Center. Ken Kulakowsky is one of the volunteers at the Heritage Press and a member of the .918 Club, a group dedicated to preserving the art of printing and named for the height of a piece of type. Volunteers from the club man the museum when it is open Thursdays through Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., and the first and third Fridays of each month from 5 to 9 p.m. More information about the
museum may be found at www.918club.org. According to Kulakowsky, in 2004, the cultural museum received a donation of printing equipment, and the organization sought volunteers who had experience with letter presses. An exhibit was set up and ran from April until the end of 2004. In early 2005, more equipment was donated, and the exhibit opened again in April, with the display running until 2009, when a state budget cut forced the museum to close. The printing equipment was not technically part of the museum collection, so the printers sought a new home, eventually landing at Building
Character, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, where the members print bags for the many crafters who sell items there. Kulakowsky said the volunteers are happy to demonstrate the presses and even allow visitors to print items such as coasters. “We have no canned presentation,” he explained. “We will spend five minutes to five hours (with visitors).” The museum asks that groups set up an appointment to visit. In the last five years, the ministry originally known as House of His Creation (HOHC) and briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), has been through a number of changes. After becoming FORM in 2016, the ministry moved from Lititz Pike to the Brickerville area, but as of late 2019, the name had reverted to HOHC, and in February 2021, the ministry moved to the site of a former bed-and-breakfast at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. Through all the changes, the mission of the ministry has been to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. In its new location, HOHC will continue to provide those services through maternity housing for women age 18 and up - especially women leaving abusive situations - who are in the first two trimesters of pregnancy and have been sober for several months. The women must also be willing to consider adoption and parenting plans and to take advantage of growth opportunities, and be educated

House of His Creation staff (from left) Michelle Gibbs, Matthew Neff, and Callie Neff are ready to welcome clients at their new location in Lititz.
toward reaching goals. Client housing for four women is provided on the second floor of the house, where each room has a private bathroom. The family living model includes individualized case management and education about basic life skills, finances, and parenting options, along with recreational activities. Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, noted that a change from former programming models is the aftercare services that are available for one year after the mother is discharged from the program. “That means that I would come and do a home visit and assess how they’re doing,” said Gibbs. “We follow through with things they may have started and provide support so they don’t feel out there and alone.” Mothers who choose to actively parent often need to learn how to do that while working, but according to executive director Matthew Neff, women who make an adoption plan may be especially in need of aftercare. “When a woman makes an adoption plan, it is very emotionally hard,” said HOHC house mom and Matthew’s wife, Callie. “She may need help to navigate the
roles and the relationships around that.” Callie noted that when the pregnancy was not the woman’s first, other issues may be involved. “(When a woman has) multiple children (who are) part of their story, then it becomes reunification or rebuilding relationship with children they haven’t actively been parenting,” said Callie. “Those children wouldn’t necessarily live here, but we would help (the woman) negotiate toward a goal that may include parenting rights in some cases.” Aftercare program goals include education in mindful parenting, empowerment to access community resources, and engaging parents to connect with other parents. HOHC offers parenting classes called “Parenting Journey” and “Parenting Journey for Fathers.” The 12-week experiential programs include guided discussion to develop knowledge and skills. More information about HOHC may be found at www.hohc.org. Those with specific questions may email mail@hohc.org or call 717626-0263. Readers who have questions about parenting classes may email Michelle@hohc.org or call 347-206-3617.

Hot Weather Safety Information Offered Summer brings high temperatures and high humidity, increasing health risks when people work and play outside. Risks are especially great for older people and young children. Patient First has provided information on heat-related illnesses and their treatment and prevention. Excessive heat can cause several health problems, including heat exhaustion. Symptoms include profuse sweating; headache; dizziness; nausea; vomiting; rapid heartbeat; cool, moist, pale skin; and muscle cramps. If someone is experiencing symptoms of being heat exhausted, move the person to a cooler location, apply cool, wet cloths to their body, and give them cool water to drink. If the person vomits or refuses to drink, call 911. Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when the body loses its ability to control its own temperature. Symptoms may include very high body temperature; confusion and slurred speech; hot, dry skin or excessive sweating; seizures; and loss of consciousness. It is important to take action if a heat stroke occurs, as this condition can be fatal. Get the person out of the sun preferably into an air-conditioned room - and call 911. Provide cool water for the person to drink, soak his or her clothing with water, and keep surrounding air circulating. Other early warning signs of heat-related illness may include cramps and a heat rash. If someone is showing signs of a heat-related illness, he or she should seek medical attention immediately. Several steps may be taken to help people avoid heatrelated illnesses. People should wear light-weight, light-colored clothing made of breathable material, like cotton. They should stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. They should avoid strenuous outdoor activity on hot days, and if they must be outside, they should take frequent breaks in a cool place. Air-conditioning is the best way to protect against heatrelated illness. During extreme heat, anyone who does not have air-conditioning at their home may try to spend time in air-conditioned locations, such as a shopping mall, public library, or public health-sponsored heat-relief shelter in their area.
