A new chapter for Joyfully Made Fellowship

Forover 15 years, Tami Shaub has operated a ministry known as the A-Team at Wesley Church in Quarryville. The group began as a youth praise and worship band, but many of its members were no longer able to participate as they grew older and went off to college or began working full time. The remaining members of the group were primarily those with special needs, and they loved having an opportunity to enjoy music together through the program. Many of these members explained to Shaub that although they loved the music, the most important aspect of the group was the fellowship.

Shaub decided to officially create the A-Team to continue to provide her students with the comradery they had grown to love. The group would meet regularly to share a

meal and to participate in a lesson or activity that incorporated music. Over the years, Shaub expanded the program by integrating field trips, support groups for parents of children with special needs and special outings like group bowling sessions. The A-Team also had its own Sunday school class at Wesley Church, but it encountered challenges with aligning themembers’ schedule, as some of their parents attended church elsewhere.

In May, Shaub took an opportunity to overhaul the A-Team by creating a nonprofit organization under the name Joyfully Made Fellowship. She began to look for a building to base the ministry out of, which she hoped would resolve many of the group’s scheduling challenges. On June 1, Joyfully Made Fellowship officially acquired the building that formerly housed Mount Hope UMC, located at See Special needs ministry pg 7

Covered Bridge Classic celebrates the joy of riding

The Lancaster Bicycle Club exists to promote the sport of bicycling, advocate for the safety of riders and provide members with cycling opportunities. Few events exemplify that mission better than the Covered Bridge Classic.

On Sunday, Aug. 20, the 400member Lancaster Bicycle Club will stage the 44th edition of its annual Covered Bridge Classic at seven start/finish points across northern Lancaster County. Some 1,300 bicycling enthusiasts from points all along the East Coast will descend

Gap Relief Sale will commemorate 75th anniversary

upon the county to celebrate the fellowship inspired by cycling.

The event is being presented as a ride, not a competition.

“The purpose is to draw in cyclists,” said Leslie Arnold, communications director for the Lancaster Bicycle Club. “It’s to offer a huge cycling event to the community. It’s an eclectic mix. Some are very serious cyclists. Some people do it because they are challenged by friends. Some make it part of their vacations. People want to see the covered bridges. That’s what draws people.”

The annual Gap Relief Sale will be held on Friday, Aug. 11, and Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The fundraising event will include auctions, hot meals and live music, and the proceeds will support the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

On Friday, the auction preview and pork roast dinner will begin at 4 p.m. The preview will be open until 6:30 p.m., and meals will be available to purchase for eat-in or takeout until 7 p.m. From 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., a member of MCC will speak alongside a special offering, followed by group singing. The auction will officially kick off at 7:15 p.m.

Gap Relief Sale frompg 1

On Saturday, the event will begin with a country breakfast that will consist of pancakes, sausages and eggs. After breakfast, auctions will begin at various times in each of the buildings at the fairgrounds.

In block one, a household item and craft auction will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by a large furniture auction at 11 a.m. Special items to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the sale will be available to bid on at noon, including a large quilt ornamented with the Gap Relief Sale logo. At 1 p.m., quilts and quilted wall decorations will be up for bids. In block two, farm equipment and workshop tools will be among the items auctioned off at 9 a.m. In block three, a sale of children’s items will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by an auction of lawn furniture, shrubbery and other outdoor items. In block four, any excess items from the food stands will be available to purchase, including subs and pulled pork. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a bounce house and barrel train rides will be available to children.

The first sale was held at the farm of Leon Summers in Gap. The event was created by locals who wished to support MCC, and it was held every other year until 1990, when it became an annual event. The sale changed locations multiple times before permanently

relocating to the Solanco Fairgrounds.

All of the event’s proceeds will benefit MCC, which is headquartered in Akron. MCC is an international ministry of Anabaptist churches that acquires resources for the purpose of offering relief to communities around the globe that are in need. The special offering on Friday will be used to fund MCC’s relief efforts in Ukraine.

The items that will be available during the sale have all been donated by individuals and local businesses. Among the items is a restored 1951 Farmall tractor, provided by Double H Tractor Service in Ephrata.

“The sale gives the local community an easy way to support MCC while acquiring something you might need,” said Levi Glick, who is helping to coordinate the event.

To donate an item for the auction, interested parties may call 717-617-9746 to arrange for drop-off or pickup.

All of the routes include rest stops, some of which feature mechanical support, parking and refreshments.

“Lancaster is not flat,” said Arnold. “There aren’t steep, steep climbs, but we have climbs that are going to push you. The shortest course has the least amount of climbs, and the longest course has the most amount of climbs.”

also serves as a fundraiser. From its participation, the Lancaster Bicycle Club is hoping to raise more than $10,000, some of which will be put back into the club, some of which will be funneled into community causes related to bicycling and some of which will go toward the maintenance of the covered bridges.

Since 1999, the Lancaster Bicycle Club has awarded $545,000 in grants mainly funded through the Covered Bridge Classic.

“It’s a huge way to give back to the community,” said Arnold. “The Lancaster Bike Club is all about advocating for cycling safety. We have social events throughout the year. We have different

Local career and technical students were recognized for excellence at the 2023 SkillsUSA Championships, held in Atlanta on June 21 and 22. Pennsylvania honorees were Kinsey Rhoads from Christiana, a student at Lancaster County Career & Technology Center in Willow Street, who was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in dental assisting, and Thomas Alexander from Pequea, a student at Lancaster County Career & Technical Center - Brownstown Campus, Ephrata, who was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in architectural drafting.

More than 6,000 students competed at the national showcase of career and technical education. Skill Point Certificates were awarded to all national contestants who met a threshold contest score. things for everybody, different types of rides for all levels of riders. Throughout the year, there’s always an effort to schedule a ride every weekend.”

In addition to its relaxed rides, the Lancaster Bicycle Club also organizes two other more formal rides - the Three Creek Century and the Chocolate Tour.

The Lancaster Bicycle Club was formed in 1973, and six years later it presented its inaugural Covered

“Over the years, we’ve evolved,” said Arnold. “More people came in, and we became bigger and more complex. At one point, we had 600 members. It’s a pastime you can do, and there’s also more serious riders. The club has evolved to reflect the needs of the membership.”

Artists invited to submit postcards for exhibit

Create Columbia will present its third Invitational Postcard Art Exhibit. Artists from around the world are invited to mail their original art postcard for inclusion in the exhibit. Entries will be used as a fundraiser for Create Columbia.

Several guidelines have been created for submissions. A postcard-size artwork or two should be created using any medium, such as painting, collage, illustration, photography, or mixed media. Postcards must be sent via postal service (as a postcard) and should not be contained within an envelope. This year’s suggested theme is “It’s About Time.” Artists need not include a return address on their postcard art, but Create Columbia suggests that artists add their website address, as visitors to the exhibit may wish to see more of the artist’s creations.

Postcard art submissions should be mailed to CC Postcard Art 2023, P.O. Box 328, Columbia, PA 17512. The submission deadline is Thursday, Aug. 24.

The entries will be exhibited at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, from Saturday, Aug. 26, to Saturday, Sept. 2. The museum’s business hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

All displayed entries will available for bid via a silent auction throughout the exhibition period. The closing reception and announcement of winning bids will be held at the museum on Sept. 2, beginning at 2 p.m. Bidding will close promptly at 4 p.m.

Income derived from winning bids will go toward continuing operating costs of Create Columbia, a 501(c)(3) organization. No postcard art will be returned, and the artworks may be included in future fundraising efforts by Create Columbia.
