Cross-Country Holds Scholarship Event, Alumni Run, Scrimmage BY MONA STEINHAUER
The Solanco cross-country teams kicked off the 2021-22 season on Aug. 28 with a home scrimmage against Octorara. The scrimmage coincided with the Solanco Cross Country and Track Alumni Association’s eighth annual Coach Lee Rhodes and Coach Art Harrington Scholarship event. “ We try to get the current team, coaches, alumni, and families together to kick off the new season and to promote our efforts to generate scholarship funds for the upcoming school year,” said former Solanco head coach Craig Ausel. This year’s event was attended by over 100 people, raised just under $1,000, and featured Solanco’s varsity scrimmage, an alumni race, and an alumni, team, and family picnic. “It’s a great way to connect the proud tradition of the past with the current program,” Ausel said.
The Rotary Club of Lancaster South will host its inaugural motorcycle ride and pancake breakfast fundraiser.
Take A Ride With The Rotary Club hartered on June 20, 1987, with 35 members, the Rotary Club of Lancaster South is one of more than 35,000 Rotary Clubs scattered across the globe. The mission of Rotary Clubs is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. In fulfilling this mission, Rotary Clubs hope to see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in their communities, and in them. On Saturday, Sept. 25, the Rotary Club of Lancaster South will host its inaugural motorcycle
C
ride and pancake breakfast fundraiser. The event will benefit affordable housing programs offered by Tenfold, which is an organization formed by the merger of Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and Tabor Community Services in 2020. Tenfold offers housing advocacy and financial empowerment to Lancaster County residents. Approximately 100 individuals, including 30 to 40 children, stay at Tenfold’s shelter on any given day. Over 2,300 households have avoided eviction through Tenfold’s support since 2018 and more than $50 million of debt has been repaid by Tenfold’s financial counseling clients since 1986. “It will be satisfying to raise a
sum of money that will directly benefit individuals assisted by Tenfold,” said Dan Hess, president-elect of the Rotary Club of Lancaster South. “If we’re not paying attention to everyone, it diminishes the quality of life in our community.” Funds raised from the event will also go toward the Rotary Club’s philanthropic work in the community, such as providing scholarships to students who graduate from Lampeter-Strasburg, Solanco, and Penn Manor high schools. Riders may choose from three different routes through Lancaster and York Counties, with distancing ranging from 50 to 100 miles. The routes are self-guided and participants can enjoy a pancake breakfast, which will be held in conjunction
with the Willow Street Fire Company. Breakfast will take place at the fire company, 2901 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street, from 9 a.m. to noon. During breakfast, Mike McKenna, CEO of Tenfold, and Ray D’Agostino, Lancaster County commissioner and former chief executive officer of LHOP, will give remarks. Although not required, preregistration is strongly encouraged and can be completed at https://bit.ly/motorcyclesignup. After Wednesday, Sept. 15, the cost of tickets will increase. For more information, contact Hess at dvhess@comcast.net or visit https://bit.ly/rotaryclubride. To learn more about Tenfold, visit https://wearetenfold.org.

(406), and Ephrata (407). The result pushed the team’s overall record to 10-0. E-town holds down second place at 8-2. Logan Wagner posted the low score of the day with his two over par round of 72. Brayden Herr (84), Andy Teaman (89), and Hudson Brown (92)
rounded out the counters while Wyatt Landis (95) and Anna Sexton (104) also competed. “That is the lowest score we have shot since 2014, when we had 337 on two different occasions,” noted head coach Greg Minnich. “Brayden carded his best round ever in league com-
petition with Hudson and Wyatt playing well in their second varsity competition. “I would also like to congratulate former Solanco golf standout Connor Sheehan, the current head coach at Manheim Central, for picking up his first win.”

Firefighters have been saving American lives for more than three centuries. Although their techniques have changed throughout this time, firefighters are still saving thousands of lives each year. To respond to an emergency the best they possibly can, firefighters need special equipment, which is why the Strasburg Fire Company No. 1 will host its fifth annual golf tournament fundraiser. The Strasburg Fire Company Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, Oct. 1, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and will take a four-person scramble format. Golf committee chairman Jim Kiscaden noted that proceeds from the event will go toward the capital equipment fund for the purchase of a new rescue-pumper. “Golfing is a fun activity,

New Maze Opens At Cedar Meadow Farm Steve Groff at Cedar Meadow Farm, 535 Drytown Road, Holtwood, has created a maze for families to explore in a four-acre field of fiber hemp. The maze is new in 2021. The creative design is shaped like Grizbot, the logo character of Cedar Meadow Farm. Grizbot is the online persona of Grizzly, Groff’s real-life farm dog and a significant part of the branding for Cedar Meadow Farm. The maze is divided into two parts. Grizbot’s head is cut into fiber hemp that is 7 to 10 feet tall, with a complex shape for older youths and adults to enjoy. Grizbot’s body is designed for smaller children, with shorter hemp and wider, easier paths. More than a dozen learning stations and activities are scattered throughout the maze. Along with exploring the maze, visitors will be able to pick their own pumpkins, squash and gourds, as well as sunflowers, that will be grown around the maze. See Maze pg 7

FENCING SPECIALISTS
Cedar Meadow Farm has decades of history and innovation in the area of regenerative agriculture. Groff, known widely as the Cover Crop Coach, is a farmer, international speaker and consultant. He recently published a book, “The Future-Proof Farm: Changing Mindsets in a Changing World,” which advocates for the use of cover crops, no-till farming and soil health. The soil on Groff’s 200-acre, family-owned southern Lancaster County farm has not been tilled in more than 30 years. Groff’s message of soil health is echoed in the new Netflix documentary “Kiss the Ground,” narrated by Woody Harrelson. Cedar Meadow Farm has produced and distributed nutrientdense food to places like Blue Apron, Giant, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods for years. The new hemp maze experience, launched under the brand Cedar Meadow Adventures, opened on Labor Day weekend and will continue through October. Visitors may purchase tickets at www.CedarMeadowAdventures.com. Updates and information will be posted at www.facebook.com/ cedarmeadowadventures. Additional information is also available by calling Groff at 717-575-6778. A maze recently opened at Cedar Meadow Farm.

The program for the 2021 hybrid Tapas Shindig will include presentations by executive director Alicia Corrado, director of development Janelle Esbenshade, a member of the North Star Initiative board, and radio personality Lisa Landis will serve as master of ceremonies. Esbenshade noted, however, that the most impactful presentation of the evening will be made by a human trafficking survivor. “We share out of our experience (with victims),” reflected Esbenshade, “but when you hear it firsthand (from a survivor), it’s a different experience.” North Star Initiative has been fighting human trafficking in Lancaster for more than 10 years. More than three years ago, the organization began operating The Harbor, known as Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. This year’s fundraiser for North Star Initiative will be held at Warehouse 100, 100 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Friday, Oct. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. North Star did not hold the annual fundraiser in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year a larger venue will allow for more attendees to stand at high-top tables enjoying tapas and mocktails if they

LOHF Awards Nursing Scholarships The Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) recently announced the recipients of the 2021 Nurse Education Scholarship. The purpose of the Nurse Education Scholarship Program is to develop the medical workforce that also cares for the mental wellbeing of Lancaster County youths and children. This year, LOHF is investing $40,000 in the education of local nursing students. This amount consists of $22,000 to 10 new scholarship recipients and $18,000 to previous recipients who are continuing in their degree program. The RN to BSN Scholars are Roberto Holder-Orta, RN, of Lancaster, and Adriana Prieto Grave de Peralta of Lancaster, both attending Penn State Harrisburg. The BSN Scholars are Penn State Harrisburg students Leidy Jiménez Argudin of Lancaster and Gelsys Estevez Chico of Lancaster, and the MSN Scholar is Jaime Plank of Mountville, attending Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences.
