Get To Know The Cul-De-Sac Lemonade Kids Summer 2020 was unlike any other. Several restrictions due to the pandemic hindered people from participating in community events and activities. As a result, many people got creative and figured out alternative plans to make their summer the best it could possibly be. Last year, a group of five kids joined together to run a lemonade stand. Siblings Olivia, Eliot, and

Isaac Bauermaster and their neighbors William and Carson Lefever live at the end of Stanton Road in Quarryville. They call themselves the Cul-De-Sac Lemonade Kids. Due to the success of the lemonade stand, the group spent the winter season planning for summer 2021. It was also at this time that they decided to donate 10% of their earnings to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM). See Lemonade Kids pg 10
First Time At The Fair BY COURTNEY MENGEL
SOL
I’ve lived in Lancaster County my entire life. I was born in Lancaster city on College Avenue, but grew up in Lititz. My family has always told me to dream big, aim high, and reach for the stars, so that’s what I did. I stood in front of the Eiffel Tower, threw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, saw the remains of the Berlin Wall, and swam in the clear waters of the Mediterranean. Before I started my current position as a feature writer for the Advertiser, I tried to get out of Pennsylvania. This job, however, has made me realize that I don’t need to go very far to explore areas that are completely different than Lititz.
I got to pet a goat for the first time at the Solanco Fair.
The Southern End is one of my favorite places to visit while on the job. Although it doesn’t always smell the best, southern Lancaster County offers some of the most stunning views of lush and verdant farmland that I have ever seen, which is one reason that I enjoyed the drive down to Quarryville to cover the Solanco Fair. If I had to describe the Solanco Fair with one word, it would be community. In a world that seems divided right now, I could feel a strong sense of togetherness at the fair. People shared picnic tables with strangers, saw old friends and made new ones, and celebrated their roots. The last part really stood out to me while I was at the fair. Everyone seemed rooted in tradition because they want to keep the fair the way it has been since the very beginning. The officers and directors of the fair felt from the start, and included in the bylaws, that gambling, concessionaires, and carnival-type activities should not be permitted. As a result, the Solanco Fair has maintained its agricultural and family roots. “I’ve been coming since I was a kid,” said Dana Hendrickson, a resident of Little Britain. “My favorite thing is seeing all the crafts. I love walking through the fair and seeing everyone’s talent.” Dana went to the fair with her daughter, Cassidy. The
sixth-grader said she likes the fair because she’s able to see her friends. There was so much to do at the fair. I feasted on french fries courtesy of the Quarryville Lions Club,
If I had to describe the Solanco Fair with one word, it would be community. hand-dipped ice cream from the dairy bar, a funnel cake made by the Farm Women Group No. 15, and a pulled-pork sandwich from Hess’s Barbecue. I sat down in the grass, watched the parade, and met a mother whose toddler kept signaling the trucks to honk their horns. I walked through a livestock building and realized I had never been as close to a cow as I was that day. I witnessed the crowning of this year’s Solanco Fair queen, Haleigh Bauer. I also went to my first livestock auction. How someone can talk that fast blows my mind. Residents of the Southern End look forward to the Solanco Fair every year, and now I do too. SECA To Host Second Annual Community Day BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Although summer has come to a close - and so has the pool at the Southern End Community Association (SECA) - that does not mean free outdoor events have to end. SECA will host its second annual Community Day on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at SECA, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. This year will feature yard sale and craft vendors, and the snack bar will sell halfpriced food items typically available for purchase during the pool season.

GTGH To Return To Farm And Home Center
SOLANCO EDITION
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Founder Jenn Knepper is excited about holding a live Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) fair this year. The fair will feature about 30 nonprofit organizations, including more than a dozen marketplace vendors with fair trade items, and several food trucks. Knepper has noticed a buying trend toward locally made items and concern for a greater cause. “People are being more intentional about shopping,” she said. “There’s something for everyone at this fair.” The 14th annual event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The fair focuses on nonprofits and other organizations that provide life-changing benefits to people.

Food trucks that will be present at the event include Walk-O Taco; Homage, which specializes in ethnic foods particularly from West Africa; and Character Coffee. Character Coffee partner Megan Foltz sells organic and fair trade products, and the truck uses Humankind Beverage products to make coffee. Humankind donates a portion of sales to clean water projects in developing countries. “ We will have chai, Mexican hot chocolate, and espresso,” said Foltz. Knepper pointed out that since GTGH will be held on a Sunday this year, those who plan to attend might consider stopping for lunch and a little shopping after church. Bethany Christian Services is known for adoption work, but Candace Reynolds will represent the organization’s Safe Families for Children program at GTGH. “ We … believe everyone deserves to be loved, connected, and safe,” said Reynolds, who noted that Safe Families is designed to support families in crisis by bridging gaps with emergency child care and other types of help. Bench Mark, a youth development and mentoring program, will be represented at the fair for the first time by founder and executive director Will Kiefer. “We will be talking about the opportunity to give through Bench Mark to our students,” explained Kiefer, who noted there will be opportunities to provide scholarships for mentoring time in the gym, career development services, academic services, and leadership training.

Luisa Tapia has been taking part in the event since 2019. Her business, My Peruvian Treasures, features fairly traded sustainable products made by women in Peru. “A portion of our sales goes to community programs,” explained Tapia. Also showcasing products at the fair this year will be Revolution Lancaster, a social enterprise with a mission to empower women who are experiencing homelessness or facing barriers. Dana Robertson is the board chair. “We recruit (women living in Lancaster), and they handcraft jewelry,” said Robertson, who noted the makers are paid a fair and living wage to help empower them financially. “ We are not yet able to employ them full time, but we are able to give them supplemental income,” she explained, adding, “It’s about the supportive community.”

Golfers Claim First Section Crown Since 2015
BY MONA STEINHAUER
In their last league match of the season, and on their home course (Tanglewood), Solanco’s golf team capped a 28-1 Section Two record, securing their fifth section title since 2012 and first since 2015. It’s their best record since a 42-0 mark in 2013. The Mules ran away from the competition, besting second place finisher Elizabethtown by 21 strokes (345-366). Garden Spot (374), CV (378), Manheim Central (393), and Ephrata (415) rounded out the section. “It was a satisfying season to capture the section title,” said head coach Greg Minnich. “Logan Wagner also captured the Section Two scoring title for the third consecutive year with a 78 average.” Wagner’s 81 was second to Ephrata’s Jett Patel whose 78 was the low score of the day. Brayden Herr (83), Nathan Tucker (90) and Andy Teaman (91) rounded out the scoring. “All year our top three (Wagner, Herr and Teaman) were there for the team,” he added. “The fourth score came from any one of five players. This time it was Nathan Tucker who shot his best round in competition by seven strokes, carding a 90. Anna Sexton (93) played well in preparation for the
league tournament and Hudson Brown (96), a freshman, played in five of our six tournaments. Also contributing to the championship throughout the year were Jeffrey Martin and Wyatt Landis.” TENNIS The racket club moved to 3-5 overall with their first Section Two victory, a 7-0 shutout over visiting Lebanon Thursday, Sept. 16. Grace Pursel and Adrienne Dolan worked an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and then posted straight set wins at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Kara Armstrong, playing No. 3 singles, and Ava Peiffer (No. 4) added an 8-2 doubles win and also won straight set singles matches with Peiffer recording a shutout. Wendy Lehmann and Ava Spangler’s 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles secured the shutout. One day later at Oxford, with another juggled lineup, the girls lost 5-2 a result. “Oxford plays three singles, four doubles and no repeats,” said head coach Annie Hammel. “We did not have enough players for this format, so their 3 and 4 doubles won by default. “The girls had to be flexible this week as our lineup shifted due to players being out,” she continued. Pursel, with a 6-3, 6-3 win, and Dolan, winning 6-3, 6-4,

tie for first place with a double overtime win over Elco. Despite a 6-4 edge in corners and an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal, Solanco was down 2-0 at the half against Cocalico. Arianna Sieberlich’s second half goal cut the lead in half, but it wasn’t enough. Against the Comets on Saturday, Manor ran off three straight scores to break a 1-1 tie. Josie Janssen’s goal in the 15th minute knotted the score. Visiting Elco, looking to take sole possession of first place, went home with a double OT loss to Solanco last Monday. “The girls rose to the occasion and played two great overtime periods,” praised Yoder. With solid defense, Solanco survived five corners over the last ten minutes to force the extra period. Alyssa Harpe, from 20 yards out, sent the game winner over the keepers’ head in the 96th minute. “It wasn’t a perfect game but just what we needed after that loss to Penn photos by Mona Steinhauer Solanco’s Stella Woy and Avery Jacobsen both ran as Solanco’s third counter in a section race at Manor,” said Yoder. FOOTBALL Solanco took an early lead Friday, Sept. 17 in Lampeter, scoring on the game’s opening drive when Robert Castagna threw a 22-yard scoring pass to Elijah Cunningham, capping a 64-yard drive. But it was the Pioneers that rose to the top, scoring three straight touchdowns and four over the last three quarters to pull away with a 28-14 victory, and retain the Milk Jug trophy. L-S took the lead for good with two second quarter touchdowns. A 13-yard strike with 6:40 left in the half and a one-yard plunge at the 2:24 mark for a 14-7 lead at the break. The hosts extended the lead on a 12-yard TD run early in the third, but Josiah Forren’s (46 yards rushing, 10 tackles) 17-yard score closed the gap to 21-14with 24 seconds left in the period. L-S gained distance in the fourth with an 8-play scoring drive that resulted in Mellinger’s second TD of the game. Elijah Reimold rushed for
a game-high 89 yards on 20 carries and hauled in three receptions. CROSS COUNTRY Wyatt Tomison (17:30) secured his first win of his varsity career, Anthony SolisMorales (17:35) finished in second place and Avery Jacobsen (17:52) followed as the Mules topped Elizabethtown 24-33 last Tuesday. Jimmy Hartigan (6th) and Joey Hartigan (12th) rounded out the top five. “ Wyatt had a great race with a PR, Anthony continues to be a top runner and Avery made some gutsy moves in the last mile to move up,” said head coach Andrew Musselman. “Jimmy continues to solidify his spot as our fourth man and Joey overtook a few runners over the final 400 meters. “Curtis Hills PR’d today, and Michael Eisenberger and Liam Barry continue to drop their times. “This wasn’t a guaranteed win for us, but the guys showed up and did what they needed to do,” Musselman added. “ We all had our moments when we were struggling in different ways, either physically or emotionally, but the boys all did great. They represented Lifecycles and the Lord well.” At 63, Wise said he isn’t sure he’s up for another cross-country bike ride, but he knows the memories from this one will last for years. “One of the boys, after the trip was over, came up to me and said, ‘Can you help me with my devotions? I like doing them, and I feel so much better when I do them, and I don’t want that to end,’” Wise remarked. “That made me realize what a lasting impact this trip is going to have on these boys.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.

Harvest Breakfast
Joining Wise on the trip were youth team members Zach Greineder, Liam Howell, Micah Lapp, Micah Clark, Monny Smith, Zander Malanchuk, AJ Vega and Jaerrid Strawser, along with adults Al Vega and Michelle Deller. Each day of the trip kicked off with a text of encouragement and Scripture from Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer, followed by a ride to the evening’s stop. “We’d go out to dinner at night, and that’s when we could really bond, since we couldn’t talk to each other much during the rides,” said Wise, a retired art teacher from Manheim who joined Lifecycles four years ago. The trip brought out the best and the worst in everybody, Wise stated, adding,

Weekend Of Activities To Benefit WFCS
Lemonade Kids from pg 1 “ We knew they did a bunch of things to help other kids,” said William. “ We wanted to donate our money to them so they could continue to do that.” Located in Quarryville at 355 Buck Road, SNM has been around for nine years. The ministry’s mission is to provide a support network, promote personal and spiritual growth, increase selfsufficiency, and break the cycle of poverty within the Solanco community. SNM connects families and individuals with resources that are intended to ensure their sustainability and suspend the crisis they’re experiencing. Dressed in their selfdesigned T-shirts, the CulDe-Sac Lemonade Kids ran their stand several times over the course of summer 2021. Each time, they served four gallons of homemade lemonade. Olivia noted that Fridays were their best days. The group members alternat-
ed roles, but they each had their favorite. William mentioned he enjoyed advertising, while Olivia said she liked serving customers. After presenting SNM with a donation of more than $528, the Cul-De-Sac Lemonade Kids toured the nonprofit. “We learned that they’re extremely generous,” stated Olivia. The group learned a lot through this experience. “They’re entrepreneurs,” stated Katie Lefever, the mother of William and Carson. “Last year, they were coming up with business ideas ... because they wanted to make money to buy their own things.” Fourth-grader William noted he is saving up to buy a car. The Cul-De-Sac Lemonade Kids might return next summer. To learn more about SNM, readers may visit www.solanco neighborhoodministries.org, call 717-786-4308, or email office@SNMinistries.org.

These are special and unique opportunities for the teachers to connect with their students. This builds relationships and helps raise money for the school at the same time.” Also as part of the fundraiser, there will a chance for attendees to win items through a random drawing. There will also be one online auction item - a trip to Chincoteague, Va. “It will include the stay at a property on the water, as well as a boating trip and a gift certificate for dinner,” said Houck. “That will be online only.” Bids will open on Oct. 2 and will close at midnight on Sunday, Oct. 3. The goal of the weekend is to raise $30,000. “This keeps the tuition where it’s at and makes it affordable for families,” said Houck, noting that last year’s fundraiser only included a virtual auction. “It’s a good opportunity for the community to get reconnected, which is one of the goals that we have since things were not in person last year.” WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. New to this year’s Community Day will be an inaugural “howl-o-ween” dog costume parade party. Kerns noted that this will be similar to the Doggie Dip event, but the pool will not be open. Adler Roberts rehearses for “Amazing Grace.”
The Broadway musical “Amazing Grace” will come to Lancaster in a concert experience, presented by Servant Stage Company. This marks the first production of the show since its Broadway run at the Nederlander Theater in 2015 and subsequent national tour. The production will run on Friday, Oct. 1, through Sunday, Oct. 17, on Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. in the auditorium at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Servant Stage noted that it will be the first theater company outside of Broadway and the national tour to present this show. Executive director Johnathan Bauer also mentioned that Servant Stage is working with playwright and composer Christopher Smith to offer this event. “Amazing Grace” is based on the true story behind the wellknown hymn. The story and music are presented by an ensemble of nearly 50 performers and a 13-piece orchestra in this concert version of the musical. The cast features Adler Roberts as John Newton, Kayla Klase as Mary Catlett, Joshua William Green as Thomas/ Pakuteh, Robert Bigley as Captain Newton, Jeannette Wehye as Nanna/Katumah, Duane Hespell as Major Gray, and Lindsey Grimble-Adams as Princess Peyai. Wally Calderon serves as artistic director, Reji Woods as assistant director, and Joe Sharick as musical director. All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices, as part of Servant Stage’s mission to make the arts accessible to everyone in the community. To reserve tickets or for more information, visit www.servant stage.org or call 717-455-0255.
