This past January, Steve Sipos of Georgetown survived a serious car accident that fractured his spine. Steve, who is 82 years old, has been running his whole life, and he had regularly competed in 5K runs and marathons as recently as last year.
After the accident, Steve believed he would never run again, but the seasoned athlete defied the odds by completing the Bird-in-Hand 5K on Sept. 8.
Steve spent six months recovering from the accident, regularly traveling to Strasburg for physical therapy, MRI and X-ray tests and sessions with a chiropractor. Although his physical recovery was going well, Steve thought that being able to run another race was out of the question, and he became depressed.
After six months of rehabilitation,
Against the odds
Steve’s orthopedic surgeon gave him some unexpectedly good news: Steve’s injury had healed enough that he could try going for a run, as long as he stopped once he experienced any pain. In July, Steve laced up his sneakers again and ran his first mile since the accident, gradually increasing the distance of his runs until he was comfortably jogging 4 miles at a time.
When asked what he credited his recovery to, Steve said he received a wave of support from his family and friends. Steve was encouraged to start running again by his wife, Harriet, as well as his daughter and her husband, Karyn and Tim Nancarvis of Lititz. Like many members of the Sipos family, Karyn and Tim share Steve’s passion for running, and they participated in the Bird-in-Hand 5K alongside him. Steve’s grandchildren Maëlys Tondini and Alex Sipos also ran the See Runner pg 2
Chestnut Level Presbyterian welcomes new youth pastor

Last December, Evan Belczyk of Millersville started his own youth group. Belczyk, who teaches health and physical education at Swift Middle School, was inspired to create the group to get to know his students and their families better in a faith-based setting. On Sept. 1, Belczyk officially started his role as a youth pastor at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, and the church now serves as a home for

his youth group.
At first, the group was not affiliated with any church, so students would take turns convening at each other’s homes. At each meeting, Belczyk and the students would play games, hold Bible studies, share a meal and participate in praise and worship music together. The youth group allowed Belczyk to build relationships with students’ families, and it also gave students an opportunity to bond with each other. Members of the group would often attend other students’ sporting events to show their support.

Steve normally completes the annual Fire Company Challenge at the Bird-in-Hand race, which includes running both a 5K and half-marathon over the course of two days. This challenge requires him to train for 12 weeks, but Steve set his sights on completing the 5K with only five weeks to prepare. He began to feel some discomfort two weeks before the race, which required him to take a break from training. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to finish, but I told my kids to drag me across the finish line if I didn’t make it,” Steve said.
Steve had a strong start to the race, completing the first mile faster than his normal time and unhindered by any pain. Steve kept a steady pace, and although Karyn and Alex had already reached the finish line, they returned to
run the final quarter mile on either side of him. Steve not only completed the race, but he placed second in his age group. “It was a pleasant surprise for me,” he said.
Steve’s passion for running began when he was in high school. He lived in rural New York during his teen years, and he would often jog to see a girl who lived on a farm more than a mile away. Steve competed on a cross-country team in college, and he has been completing races across the state ever since. Steve plans to continue running 5K races as he works his way back to half-marathons.

What certain noises may indicate about your car
Automobiles have come a long way since their introduction more than 100 years ago. The cars of today are technological marvels, which has made both driving and maintaining a vehicle simpler in certain ways. For example, built-in diagnostic systems can now alert drivers when something is wrong with their car. Although that feature is undeniably useful, drivers can still benefit from learning to recognize issues by ear. Many problems that can affect a car or truck produce unusual sounds, and learning what certain noises may indicate can help drivers detect problems as soon as possible.
- Rattling sound in a wheel well: Many people have mistakenly placed clothing in a dryer without realizing the clothing had spare change in the pockets. That mistake is
immediately apparent once the dryer starts thanks to the unpleasant noise of coins bouncing off the interior of the machine. Drivers may hear a similar sound when behind one of their car’s wheels and wonder what’s behind it. Such a sound often indicates that there’s a loose lug nut inside the hubcap. This issue can arise when drivers don’t secure the wheel tightly after changing their own tire or if mechanics make the same mistake when rotating or replacing tires during a routine maintenance session.
- Squeaking sound: The auto insurance experts at Geico note that rear-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles may produce a rhythmic squeaking sound when an issue arises with the universal joint. JD Power notes that the universal joint,
CARE
often referred to as a U-joint, is part of the system that enables the rotating crankshaft in the engine of a vehicle to transfer that rotating motion to the rear wheels. U-joints get a workout whenever vehicles are driven, so they require maintenance, and a squeaking sound is one indicator that the U-joint needs to be addressed immediately.
- Squealing sound: A highpitched squealing sound typically means the vehicle’s brake pads are worn out. However, Cars.com notes that if such a sound is only present when a car is first driven in the morning, it could just be surface rust being scraped off the rotors. After a few initial applications of the brakes, the sound might disappear. If it doesn’t, the vehicle will likely need new brake pads.
Warning signs that brakes are faltering
- Scraping on the windshield during rain: The scraping sound on a windshield when the wipers are in use should not be taken lightly or be interpreted as a sign that the rain is only falling lightly. In fact, that sound indicates the wipers are worn out, which means they’re not effectively clearing the windshield. In addition, the wipers could be scratching the windshield each time they produce this sound, ultimately necessitating a costly windshield replacement. Wiper blades can be replaced in a matter of minutes, so address this issue promptly.
Learning to recognize the sources of various vehicle noises can help drivers nip problems in the bud before they compromise the automobile and the safety of the people inside it.
Performance issues that can affect older cars
Modern cars have much longer life spans than one may expect. Not too long ago, drivers often commemorated the milestone of their vehicles reaching the 100,000-mile mark. However, data from Car and Driver indicates the average vehicle now lasts around 12 years or roughly 200,000 miles. More advanced electric or hybrid vehicles may be able to go even farther, with some capable of reaching as many as 300,000 miles.
Thanks to advancements in technology, cars are more durable than ever, but that doesn’t make them immune from breakdowns or the
need for repairs. A report from AAA found that more than two-thirds of service calls were for vehicles a decade or older. Here’s a look at some of the problems that can affect older vehicles.
Among the problems older vehicles face are battery issues. The average car battery lasts between three and five years, according to Auto Zone. Batteries tend to show signs of wear at the four-year mark on average. Corrosion or dirt on battery terminals also can affect battery performance.
Older cars may also experience electrical system problems, caused by any-
thing from burnt-out car fuses to bad or faulty electrical connections and contacts. Corroded or loose screws, nuts and wires can cause electrical issues, which may be more common in older vehicles that have significant mileage on them.
Vehicles may also have trouble with their suspension system, which consists of springs, tires, shock absorbers, struts, anti-sway bars and other parts that connect the vehicle to the wheels. Suspension systems regulate the amount of bouncing in the vehicle while on the road and make it manageable. Eventually, all suspension systems wear out, and parts need to be serviced or replaced.
Evaporative emissions are another challenge. The evaporative system consists of a network of hoses, canisters and valves, and it helps vent pressure in the gas tank. An older vehicle may end up with a cracked hose that can cause a fuel leak. Hoses also may be compro-
Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car problems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of various problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize.
Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of fading brake systems tend to be more subtle.
Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these signs is a highpitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist.
Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stopping distance is significant enough that it should be brought to the attention of a brake specialist immediately. Another warning sign of brake problems is that the vehicle noticeably pulls to one side as it comes to a stop. This behavior indicates that one side of the brakes is malfunctioning while the other is working properly. Like other issues with brakes, this one requires immediate attention from a professional.
Issues with brakes can be costly and dangerous, so it is important that drivers learn to recognize the warning signs of brake problems.
mised elsewhere in vehicles, so these points should be checked during routine maintenance.
As with other moving parts on a car, the brake system wears down over time, and parts need to be replaced. Squealing, squeaking or a soft brake pedal are indicative of braking system issues and should be looked at by a mechanic promptly.
Modern vehicles are increasingly being controlled by computers. These computers handle a variety of features, including navigation and pairing to mobile phones, among others. Over time, systems may no longer work if there are no computer updates available. That means Bluetooth pairing may no longer function, or maps may not be current for GPS systems.
Due to technological advancements, cars and trucks have longer life spans than they used to. However, age is still a factor in the deterioration of vehicle systems.
The effects of infrequent driving on a vehicle
Driving causes a certain measure of wear and tear on a vehicle. Whether a vehicle is used primarily for commuting or as a vessel to take travelers to places unknown, wear and tear is inevitable. On the opposite end of the spectrum, individuals may not realize that failing to drive their vehicles regularly also can affect performance. Here’s a closer look at what can happen when vehicles sit idle for lengthy periods of time.
The battery can lose its charge. The battery in a vehicle is still being used even if the car isn’t running. Batteries power various components in a car, such as the vehicle computer, phone chargers and more. If the engine does not turn over and help to recharge the battery, the battery will eventually die. People who drive infrequently may want to consider a trickle charger that’s plugged in during peri-
ods of non-use.
Tires also can be affected, as they may become prone to dry rot. The rubber in the tires can dry out and become brittle, causing splits and cracks to form. Driving with rotting tires can cause tires to deflate.
Also, when tires are not used frequently, the weight of the car can put continual pressure on the same parts of the tires, leading to flat spots. Tires also can lose pressure if they sit too long.
Rust and corrosion can occur. There is still plenty of metal in modern vehicles. A vehicle that has been exposed to salt or rain or one that is stored in a moist climate can be susceptible to undercarriage or engine rust. This rust may cause damage that’s not easily repaired. Additionally, a vehicle parked in one location for a long time could be a target

This year, representatives from Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, Refton Brethren in Christ Church and St. Catherine of Siene Catholic Church have assisted Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren with planning the walk.

for bird droppings, fallen berries, sap and other substances that are potentially harmful to the paint. Leaving a car or truck out in the sun also means UV rays can cause clear coat over the paint to oxidize, producing blotchy or peeling spots.
The brakes may also suffer. When vehicles are left to sit, corrosion could build up on the rotors, and the brake pads may become less flexible. Moisture also may seep into
Restaurant Week posted
Fall Lancaster City Restaurant Week will be celebrated from Monday, Oct. 9, through Sunday, Oct. 15.
During the week, local residents are asked to support all of the eateries, bakeries, restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes in the city of Lancaster. The week is designed to provide diners with an opportunity to try somewhere new as well as support their local favorite spots.
For more information and a list of participating restaurants, visit www.lancaster cityrestaurantweek.com. More information is also available at www.facebook .com/LancasterCityRestaurant Week.
has continued to grow thanks to our move to Muddy Run Park,” said Mary Etta Reinhart, who co-coordinates the walk with fellow Mechanic Grove member Don Trimble.
“It’s a beautiful, family- and pet-friendly place to walk, and the event is a great way to spend a morning doing something important.”
Last year, more than 75 walkers from 12 local churches and organizations participated in the CROP Hunger Walk in the Southern End. The event broke its record for the highest amount of money raised by a single walk by accumulating more than $22,000 in donations. Since the tradition was started by the Solanco Ministerium in 1980, the walk has raised nearly $450,000.
Every year, CROP Hunger
Walks are held throughout the country to raise money for Church World Service, a nonprofit that seeks to battle international food insecurity. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds from Solanco’s CROP Hunger Walk will benefit Church World Service Lancaster; the remaining 25% percent will be donated to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. Last year, the event raised more than $5,000 for the food bank, and it was given the Cream of the Crop Award by Church World Service. Every year, the organization gives the award to the 100 CROP Walks that have raised the most money.

brake lines, causing issues with pressurization of brake fluid. Each of these factors adds up to brakes that do not work properly, which is a big safety hazard. Oil and other fluids may lose efficacy. Various fluids can go stale in a vehicle if it isn’t regularly driven. Gaso-
line also may develop condensation, which can reduce efficiency and performance. Taking short trips helps avoid this issue.
Infrequent driving can cause damage to a vehicle, but many potential issues can be avoided by driving vehicles more often.

“I love getting to know my students and their families more, and I love having God at the center of those relationships. It inspired me to go out of my comfort zone and start my own group,” Belczyk said. “I never thought I would end up doing something like this.”
Belczyk’s youth group began with nine students, but it quickly grew to include 25 active members. One student’s parents were part of the congregation at CLPC, and they asked the church’s pastor if the group could use the church’s facility to host its activities. The youth group moved its meetings to CLPC in January. As the pastor and congregation got to know Belczyk and his program more, the church offered him the position as an official youth pastor.
Now that the youth group has a home base, Belczyk has the space and resources
to host more students, as well as offer them more activities. Since Belczyk became a youth pastor at CLPC, the youth group’s meetings have been attended by more than 40 students. Belczyk plans to utilize the program’s new resources to offer activities like retreats and mission trips to his students. “We never had the resources for things like that before,” Belczyk said. “It’s been awesome to be able to give the kids more opportunities and a consistent place to meet.”
Belczyk and his group are currently deciding on a location to visit for a mission trip next summer, which they plan to make an annual activity. In February, the group will participate in a weekend retreat with other youth ministries at Pinebrook in East Stroudsburg. Belczyk and his students raised funds for the

CLPC’s youth group meets on Sundays from 6 to 7:30 p.m.Registration is open to students between sixth and 12th grades, and signup forms are available at each meeting.

For more than 20 years, Ginger Goudie taught students at The Janus School in Mount Joy, making an impact every day.
“She taught math, and she also taught our junior and senior success classes, where she helped students with internships and opportunities to be more involved in the community,” said James Dempsey, dean of students. “She was also a big fan of fall and a big fan of the outdoors. She was an incredible person who gave it her all in the classroom and outside the classroom for our students.”
Goudie passed away from cancer last November, and the staff members at The Janus School wanted to honor her memory. They are organizing the Ginger Goudie Memorial
5K and The Janus School Fall Fest on Saturday, Oct. 28. The events will be held at the school, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy.
“We think it’s absolutely important to remember her and her legacy,” noted Dempsey, who added that all profits from the 5K will support the Ginger Goudie Financial Aid Fund.
The 5K will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a kids’ half-mile fun run at 11:30 a.m. The Fall Fest will also begin at 11:30 a.m.
Medals will be awarded for various age groups in the 5K, and trophies will be presented to the top male and top female finisher.
The Fall Fest will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including bounce houses, crafts and food. Food trucks

Tess Gerritsen at Council of Friends event
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When she was a child, Tess Gerritsen couldn’t resist a good mystery book. “The first mystery novels I read were Nancy Drew books,” recalled the New York Times bestselling author of more than 30 novels. “I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that. I want to tell those kinds of stories.’”
Becoming an author wasn’t a straight course for Gerritsen, who will headline the Council of Friends of Public Libraries’ fall author event at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9.
“Being from a practical Asian-American family, my parents wanted me to do something more traditional for a career,” she said. She graduated from Stanford University and went to medical school, eventually becoming a doctor. Her desire for storytelling never faltered, however, and when she was on maternity leave after the birth of her first son, she wrote her first novel, “Call After Midnight.” It was published in
1987, and by her third book, “Harvest,” Gerritsen made her New York Times bestseller debut in 1996.
She had started following her heart, and she didn’t plan to return to medicine. “We moved from Honolulu to Maine, and I was so determined to focus on my writing, I decided not to apply for a Maine medical license,” she said.
She took what she knew from the medical field and put it into her books, which have been published in 40 countries and often have a tie to medicine. Publisher’s Weekly dubbed Gerritsen the “medical suspense queen,” but she also made a name for herself in the industry for creating the “Rizzoli & Isles” series, focused on a partnership between two crime-solving women. The book series became a global hit and inspired the long-running TNT series of the same name.
Gerritsen will discuss her latest book, “The Spy Coast,” at her November talk, where
Memorial 5K
on-site will be Gourmet Julie’s Way, Noel’s Café, Stoney’s Burgers and Fries, What’s For Supper and TJ’s Ice Cream.
The festivities are open to anyone in the community, and head of school Heather Strunk hopes the day will raise awareness of everything
The Janus School does.
“We are the only K to 12 independent school for students with learning differences in southcentral Pennsylvania,” Strunk explained. “We serve students in six counties - Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York.”
The Janus School currently has 74 students enrolled, but new students are accepted throughout the school year, she noted.
“We’re working to empower our students to be the best versions of themselves and to become lifelong learners and
she’ll be joined on stage by WITF’s Scott LaMar.
“I don’t do book readings, because I think they’re kind of boring,” she said with a laugh. “What I like to talk about is, ‘Where do ideas come from? What is my process of approaching writing a new book? How do I develop characters? How do I keep going when I hit a wall?’”
Proceeds from Gerritsen’s appearance will benefit all of the public libraries in Lancaster County, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, leader of the Council of Friends.
“When I read Tess’ bio, I realized how unbelievable she is,” Steinhauer said. “It just goes to show you that her early passion manifested itself as an adult, and she was able to put that passion, along with her education and training as a doctor, into doing something she loves.”
Gerritsen said she hopes her story will inspire others to follow their dreams, noting that she often hears from readers, many of whom have
done just that. Sometimes, however, the stories she hears are sadder.
One reader told her he’d been an engineer all his life, but he had wanted to become a fashion designer. “He told me he really regretted his career choice,” she said. “I like to tell people, ‘Find a way to make what you want to do work for your own family circumstances. Carve out some time to do it.’”
The Council of Friends event will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Tickets will include a copy of “The Spy Coast” and may be purchased at https://lancasterlibraries.org/ fall-author-event.
problem-solvers,” Strunk remarked. “We want to set them up for academic and personal success after leaving The Janus School.”
She emphasized that many parents comment on the support their children receive at The Janus School.
“Many of our students were not thriving in other placements,” she said. “They weren’t getting a lot of positive feedback, and the parents never heard things their child can do. We focus on strengths here. Children at The Janus School can feel seen, safe and valued.”
Dempsey noted that Goudie would appreciate the purpose of the 5K and Fall Fest. “This would be important to her, because she valued community,” he said. “She’d be excited to see everyone come out for this. You can walk or run and then walk around and check out the Fall Fest activities. Come get to know a part of your town you maybe didn’t know existed before.”

LUMC slates annual Fall Fest
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Three years ago, Sarah Short and her mother, Mary Martz, joined the children’s ministry team at Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster. Short grew up as a member of the church and decided to become involved with the ministry after having a child of her own. At the time of Short’s and Martz’s arrival, the members of the children’s ministry team were devising ways to
engage young families in the community.
Short suggested an autumn celebration hosted by the church, and the rest of the team jumped on board. The first Fall Fest at LUMC was held in October 2021.
Fall Fest has become an annual tradition at LUMC. This year, the rain-or-shine event will be held on Saturday,
Oct. 14, from noon to 3 p.m.
The free celebration will include a variety of autumn-themed

and support necessary to make the program an engaging experience for students.
