Eradicating Hunger One Step At A Time
Gobble Up A Turkey Supper BY COURTNEY MENGEL
2021 marks the 14th year that the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) has hosted its annual turkey supper at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. In spite of the pandemic, members of MOPW said, last year was a huge success. “We had to turn people away,” said MOPW member Rose Griest. “We sold 525 meals and people were lined up, but we ran out of food within an hour and a half.” “The first year we did it, we ran out of food within an hour,” stated MOPC mission team leader Dan Henry. This year’s turkey supper will take place on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 4 p.m. until sold out. Like last year, a drive-through line will be set up around MOPC. The meals will include roast turkey, stuffing, gravy, corn, mashed potatoes, rolls and butter, pepper cabbage, whoopie pies, and more. See Turkey Supper pg 5

he Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP) was created in 1947 when farmers were asked to donate food and seed crops to Europe and Asia after World War II. Twenty-two years later, the inaugural CROP Hunger Walk was organized in Bismarck, N.D., and in York, Pa., the year after. Since then, CROP Hunger Walk events have been held in hundreds of communities nationwide, raising money to eradicate hunger and poverty. Representatives from Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church,
T
Refton Brethren in Christ Church, and Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren have collaborated for the past 31 years to host the annual Solanco CROP Hunger Walk. Since its inception in 1980, the event has raised over $401,000. All of the proceeds go to Church World Service, the organizer of the CROP Hunger Walk, then the Church World Service sends 25% of the funds to a chosen local organization. Mary Etta Reinhart and Don Trimble, co-chairs of the Solanco CROP Walk, selected the food bank run by Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) as the recipient. Through the CROP Walk, participants
endeavor to help eradicate hunger on both global and local scales. This year’s Solanco CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road, Holtwood. Walkers will gather at 8:30 a.m., with the 5-mile walk beginning at 9 a.m. Masks will be optional, and the event will be held rain or shine. “The park is such a beautiful place to walk,” stated Reinhart. “Usually, the trees are changing and I see deer almost every year. (The event is) also a good role model for families; we have adults who came when they were kids.”
“This is a very worthy cause,” said Trimble. “It provides funds for those who are unable to help themselves so they can start a project where they can become self-sufficient.” The owners of C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant, Robin and Christy Lapp, will donate a $10 gift card to each participant who raises a minimum of $100. To register for the walk, contact Reinhart at 717-786-4323, 717-808-4306, or ereinhart403 @comcast.net. To learn more about the CROP Hunger Walk, visit https://events.crophungerwalk.org/ 2021/home.

Baking Contest Winners Announced
From Vietnam To Lancaster
There were a total of 82 entrants with 253 entries in the Baked Products Section at the Solanco Fair in 2021, and 19 of those entrants participated in the annual baking contests. Four bakers were selected as winners in these special competitions on Sept. 15. The Homemade Chocolate Cake contest is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF), and the winner this year was Anna Mary Barcus of Holtwood. The PSACF also sponsors the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie contest, and the Solanco Fair winner for 2021 was Bethany Osborne of Holtwood. Pennsylvania’s INCREDIBLE Angel Food Cake contest was once again cosponsored by the Pennsyl-
Mike Caimi has always looked up to Vietnam War helicopter pilots. “They were kinda my heroes,” said Caimi, who admired the young American men for their ability to fly helicopters through the jungles of Southeast Asia. As an adult, he became friends with Jim Haga, a Vietnam Huey pilot who served two tours during the war. “We were talking about restoring a helicopter and getting it out in front of Vietnam veterans,” said Caimi, who worked with Haga and others to form the Liberty War Bird Association, which Caimi now serves as
vania Egg Farmers and the PSACF. Esther Groff of Quarryville had the winning entry this year with her chocolate almond angel food cake. The Cookies, Brownies and Bars Junior Baking contest was won by 17year-old Sarah Keeler of Quarryville, who submitted her chocolate chip cookies. This contest is sponsored by the PA Preferred program, which is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and encourages youths to find locally grown or produced ingredients for their baking. All four of these certified contest winners are eligible to enter the Pennsylvania State Farm Show in January 2022, where first-place winners receive cash prizes.

president. In 2015, the organization began to realize Caimi and Haga’s dream when a helicopter, which was discovered in California, made the journey to a hangar in Lititz where it will be used as a “flying museum.” During the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s Wheels and Wings Festival held at the Lancaster Airport in July, Caimi quickly recounted the history of the Huey before the chopper returned and its thundering sounds drowned out his words. “Our helicopter served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970,” said Caimi, noting that the bird logged 1,300 combat flight hours. In late 1969, the Huey went to the 170th Assault Helicopter Company, where it primarily brought troops in and out of combat landing zones and did some cross- border flights into Cambodia. After being used in Vietnam, the Huey was flown to the Fort Rucker Army Flight School, where it served for five years to train future Army aviators. From there, it was transferred to the Oklahoma National Guard, where it was used from 1975 to 1994. It was then decommissioned and went to the Texas State Technical College as a training aircraft. In 2012, it was sold to an individual in the helicopter parts industry. “(The new owner) had heard about our organization and how we were looking for a Huey,” said Caimi, who noted that the owner reached out to Liberty thinking the helicopter was in good enough shape to be restored. In March 2015, Caimi went to California and, after a cursory inspection of the helicopter, made a deal. “We had enough money to put a deposit down,” recalled Caimi, who

added that a member who was connected to the VFW arranged for donated truck transportation for the helicopter from California to Lancaster. “It took us three years to restore it,” said Caimi, who noted that the work was completed in the Lititz hangar in August of 2018. “It took about 30,000 man hours and $600,000 of donations (to complete the restoration),” said Caimi. “It was a true labor of love.” “The mission of the Liberty War Birds is to get this helicopter in front of as many veterans as possible to show it off and reconnect them with their history,” said Caimi, who added that the organization also wants to educate the public on what the Huey does and what it did in Vietnam. Halloween Days And Spooky Knights BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The grounds of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire will get a little creepy when the faire hosts Halloween Days & Spooky Knights. The Halloween-themed weekends will run on Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. “The fairgrounds lend themselves to autumn celebrations,” noted Candace Smith, director of sales and communications, adding that the faire has held the Halloween events for several
years. “It was a natural fit.” The weekends will feature all of the usual faire festivities, along with special holiday-themed activities, she stated. Smith set up the Halloween scenario, saying that through his privateering, Sir Walter Raleigh has brought prosperity and commerce to the Shire of Mount Hope, but he’s also brought attention, and some of it is unwanted. “As ships laden with riches traverse the ... rivers and bays, a dark and hungry force begins to stir in the murky waters below, woken from its standing slumber and champ-
ing at the bit for blood,” she related. “The various factions of the Shire will have to unite despite their differing beliefs and priorities to make use of all their resources, natural and otherwise to fight this supernatural threat.” She encouraged people to visit the faire to find out: Will the humble magic of the Shire prevail or will all descend into unbridled chaos? Along with the faire’s traditional entertainment schedule, including live music, comedy shows and jousts, the weekends will feature Halloween elements. A “Nipperkins” costume contest will be held for children age 11 and under. Adults can also participate in a costume contest that will award prizes for both individual and group costumes. Additional activities will include a treasure hunt, where children will be
invited to follow a map and search for buried treasure on the Shire, as well as trick-ortreat throughout the grounds. Fall and Halloween decorations will be on display as well, including Scratchy the pumpkin creature. “Scratchy is over two stories tall and greets people each season just inside the front gates,” Smith stated. She emphasized that visitors to the Renaissance Faire must purchase tickets online ahead of their visit, and that tickets are date specific. There are no gate sales. “Tickets can be purchased up to and including the day of the event, provided there is availability,” she said, “and (you can) print or show your tickets from a mobile device.” For more information about Halloween Days and Spooky Knights, visit www.parenfaire.com.

Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church in Quarryville was selected for the 2021 C. Emlen Urban Award for Renovation from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. The award cited the project as a collaborative venture between Hammel Associates Architects and Arthur Funk & Sons Inc., Construction Services. The award is presented to recognize the people and their teams who preserve and adaptively reuse historic architecture. The Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church was built in 1765. The church’s building committee, Hammel Associates Architects, and a team of craftspeople from Arthur Funk & Sons worked together to renovate the 5,455square-foot sanctuary and preserve the historic features of the church. The sanctuary renovations include opening up the balcony, re-appointing the artistic painting of the ceiling, removing and reinstalling the original stained and lead glass windows in new thermally broken frames, and creating an accessible chancel. An ADA accessible restroom and a mother’s room were added, providing an additional 207 square feet to the structure.
The schoolroom museum will be open for research and fellowship before and after the church service. Restroom facilities will be provided.

Although the supper occurs every October, preparations begin as early as August, when MOPC members gather to husk, silk, and freeze about 100 dozen ears of locally grown sweet corn. A few days prior to the event, church members put in hours of work cooking the turkey, peeling the potatoes, preparing the pepper cabbage, and making the whoopie pies. The MOPW prefers to use the proceeds of the turkey supper locally. The group contributes to Boy Scout Troop 87, which is chartered by MOPC, as well as ministries in the Solanco community. MOPW also uses some of the proceeds to help local families that need some assistance. “Come by for a delicious meal, and help support less-

Volleyball Team Earns Two Tournament Wins
BY MONA STEINHAUER
Despite a 1-3 record in Section Two, the volleyball team has been putting up competitive game scores despite falling short in the wins department. Thursday, Sept. 23, was not a typical outing for Solanco as they dropped three quick games against Section Two’s undefeated Elizabethtown. “Our defense was solid all night, getting a lot of digs on some tough balls,” said head coach Dillon Costello. “Our serve receive was good in the first two sets but then fell apart. The girls played hard. It was a loss to learn from.” On Saturday Solanco hosted Columbia, Lititz Christian and Lancaster Mennonite for some “double header” action. The hosts defeated the Tide (25-16, 18-25, 25-21, 25-8) and LC (21-25, 2521, 18-25, 25-22, 16-14. “It was definitely a confidence booster,” said Costello. “My setters, Triniti Erisman and Madi Davis did a nice job getting everyone involved. I would say the MVP for us was Kate Unger. She was a force at the net and brought a ton of energy. I switched her to outside and she was not letting anything drop in the back. She did a great job keeping the team spirits high throughout the day.” Jaidee Beam paced the win against Columbia with seven aces while Martha Weaver added seven kills due in part to Madi Davis and her 13 assists. Unger added one block and Marissa Cannizzaro recorded 11 digs. Against Lititz, Erisman served up four aces and dished out 11 assists. Beam collected nine of those for kills. Anya Fisher put up five blocks and Unger hustled for 29 digs.
Last Tuesday, despite a loss, Solanco took Manheim Central to four sets pulling out a 30-28 thriller in the second set. Unger put up a match-high nine blocks and Cannizzaro recorded 17 digs to spark the defense while Erisman dished out 10 assists, Herr fired off seven kills and Beam added three aces as Solanco fell to 3-6. For more photos see www.townlively.com TENNIS The tennis team hit the toughest part of their schedule over the last week, facing the top four teams in Section Two and coming away with four straight 7-0 losses. Ava Peiffer and Wendy Lehmann almost pulled out a No. 3 doubles win over Elizabethtown, falling short 8-6. Destiny Langley put up the best singles numbers of the week with a 6-0, 6-4 loss against Donegal. FOOTBALL For the second week in a row Solanco got off to a good start and scored the first touchdown of the night. But for the second week in a row, it was the opposition that had the last say. Friday, Sept. 23 in Quarryville, Penn Manor’s Eli Warfel found DeShawn Stanley for a 19-yard TD strike that put the visitors in front, 21-17, with 4:47 left to play. And then stopped the Mules on their final drive. “We had opportunities that we did not execute on,” said head coach Tony Cox. “And I hate that for the kids because they work so hard during the week making those plays. We just came up short. “I told the players before the game that whoever makes the least number of mistakes will win,” he added. “The 120 yards of

penalties we were whistled for did not help. We must move on and learn from our mistakes.” Solanco took the lead with 4:51 left in the first on Robert Castagna’s seven-yard run. Manor jumped ahead in the second frame with Warfel’s 8-yard strike to Clark Wagstaff but Solanco capped the scoring for the half when Trent McDowell booted a 39-yard field goal with 5.1 seconds remaining. Manor regained the lead when Warfel hit Stanley from 14-yards out to go ahead 14-10 with 11:54 left. Solanco answered the challenge on Elijah Reimold’s seven-yard scoring run with 6:01 on the clock. “I thought Connor Smith had two sacks in the first quarter and did a great job on offense and Josiah Forren, with one interception, and Colton Stoltzfus led the team in tackles with seven each,” added Cox. Brody Mellinger was Solanco’s top rusher with 103 yards on 20 carries. For more photos see www.townlively.com GIRLS’ SOCCER The dogfight in Section Three continued as Solanco, Elco and Cocalico kept pace with each other photo by Mona Steinhauer to remain tied for the In Friday night football action in Quarryville, Sept. 23, Solanco’s Connor top spot at 5-1. Smith drops Penn Manor quarterback Eli Warfel in the backfield. Thursday, Sept. 23,
Solanco traveled to Section One’s Elizabethtown and came home with a 2-1 victory. E-town broke in front with a goal in the 31st minute. The visitors responded less than two minutes later. The Bears miscalculated on a clear and the ball came rolling to Arianna Seiberlich who gained control and sent a shot right over the goalie’s head. “Arianna did a tremendous job of keeping the shot on goal and not blasting it over the ball,” said head coach Ken Yoder. Alyssa Harpe, scoring her third straight game-winning goal, sealed the deal with five minutes remaining, making good on a corner kick. GOLF Last Monday at Honeybrook Golf Course, Solanco advanced three players to the District 3 Golf Tournament to be held October 8-9 at Honeyrun Golf Club in York. Andy Teaman (82), Logan Wagner (83) and Anna Sexton (94) all advanced while Brayden Herr (86), Jeffrey Martin (91), Nathan Tucker (103) and Hudson Brown (105) also competed. “As a team, we scored 342 which was lower than our 346 season average,” said head coach Greg Minnich. “In 16 years I don’t know if we’ve ever had three district qualifiers.” FIELD HOCKEY Playing four games in five days left little time to tweak strategies. None in fact as Solanco played Friday , Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. Despite the workhorse load, the home team came away with positive results.
In Lancaster on Sept. 24, Solanco beat McCaskey2 -1. Tied at 1-1 in the first half, Sadie Cook notched the game-winner with 6:34 left in the game. Rebecca Bruno, who scored in the second quarter, was credited with the assist. Caitlin Bennethum earned four saves. Less than 24 hours later, the girls traveled to Ephrata and came home with their most lopsided defeat of the year, 9-0. Last Monday, with a hat trick from Sadie Cook, they regrouped with a 3-1 win at Octorara. “It was super exciting,” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “We lost 6-3 to Octorara on our senior night, so to come back like
this, and after that loss to Ephrata, it felt great. We started some different players in the first half and they stepped up. “Defensively, Abby Kennedy stepped up and took control of the field,” she added. “She finally broke out of her shell and showed her skills.” Solanco swept the series against Donegal last Tuesday with a 3-1 victory. Holding a 1-0 lead on Mia DanielMorales’ first half goal, the hosts doubled up the Indians after the break with goals from Maya Dolan and Emma Housekeeper. Addison O’Donnell and Kara Peace were credited with assists.

Freedom Life Church invites the community to participate in the seventh Freedom 5K, as well as a fun run, on Saturday, Oct. 9. The events will take place at Salisbury Township Park, also known as Gap Park, located at 750 White Horse Road, Gap. All proceeds, including registration fees and sponsorship donations, will benefit the A21 Campaign, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reach, rescue and restore individuals affected by human trafficking in the Unites States and worldwide. Organizers are eager to have the fundraiser in person this year. “In 2020, it was a virtual event; people just signed up and ran on their own,” said Angie Dearolf, Freedom Life communications director. “We want people to come together for a good cause and to enjoy community again.” Registration for the Freedom 5K will open at 7:45 a.m., and the timed 5K will begin at 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in various age categories, based on a chip timing system. A modified fun run will follow the 5K, and it will not be timed. The 5K course, which will follow a trail around trees and ballfields in the park, is paved and will include low-grade inclines and declines. “The run/walk stays in the park,” Dearolf explained. “The trail around the park is over threequarters of a mile, so they do

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24
This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.
