To the moon and back twice … plus 30 miles

When Teresa Groff of Kirkwood started working for the New Providence post office in 1986, she never thought she would end up receiving one of the rarest awards from the United States Postal Service. Decades later, Groff has earned the esteemed Million Mile Award, an honor given to those who have delivered mail for 30 accumulated years or driven more than 1 million miles on a route without a preventable incident.

“I was very surprised,” Groff said. “I guess I always try to anticipate what other people are going to do, and I don’t take a lot of chances.”

Groff received the award in August, along with a plaque, a pin and a coat to commemorate the achievement. Cathleen Hodgson, Groff’s supervisor at the Quarryville Post Office, nominated Groff for the award after she mentioned her desire to retire soon. “I thought,

‘She’s got to qualify.’ I looked into the award and found out that she was overqualified,” Hodgson said.

“She’s such a great carrier. We needed to commend her on her service.” The total distance that Groff has driven on a mail route is equal to four times the distance between Earth and the moon, plus 30 miles.

Groff worked for the post office part time for several years, as she was raising a small child and the flexible schedule allowed her to be home early in the afternoon. Groff became a fulltime rural carrier associate in 2000 and came to the Quarryville Post Office after it was merged with the New Providence location.

Groff acquired a new route in Quarryville five years ago, where she delivered mail before officially retiring in September. “I got to know the community better as a mail carrier,” Groff said. “You get to know lots of people and what’s going on in their lives. If something was out of the ordinary, or if someone

First online fundraiser for Kingdom causes planned

Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”

The result is a three-day online

New year, same fair fun

giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16,at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park. “There will be worship, celebration, and announcing prizes,”

The 2023 Solanco Fair kicked off on Sept. 20, bringing the aroma of funnel cakes and the rumble of tractor engines to Quarryville. The annual celebration brought three days of exciting activities and fair traditions to local residents, who look forward to fair season every year.

The fair commenced with a market lamb show and a market goat show. At 6 p.m., the street parade filled downtown Quarryville with creatively decorated floats from local businesses, nonprofit organizations and emergency service vehicles.

LCSWMA encourages proper battery disposal

Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel can spark and explode when damaged. To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch of a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.

Rechargeable batteries are in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, lap-

tops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If the rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process.

According to Robert Zorbaugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is

putting trash haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste disposal facilities.

Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many free and convenient dropoff locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In Lancaster County, residents can use LCSWMA’s drivethrough Household Haz-

ardous Waste Facility to drop-off both alkaline and rechargeable batteries.

For more details and to learn about other collection locations, visit www.Safe BatteryDisposal.com. The webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips.

More information about LCSWMA is available at www.lcswma.org.

explained Kieffer. There is no cost to attend either event, but donations will be welcomed. Those wishing to attend either event may register at www.faithfulgive.org.

Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the event. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming award are open at https://faithfulgive.org/ prizes/.

Kieffer pointed out that the first day of the event will

not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word. “(The guide) will enable people to learn about the organizations and pray for them,” Kieffer said.

Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county.

“This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions in every area of life,” he said.

“This was started by those who want to celebrate those organizations, nurture their vision, and guard it for the

next generation.”

Looking ahead, Kieffer noted that he would love to see the giving event raise $500,000 or more. “Our goal is to bless this community,” he said. “This is really a labor of love,” he noted, adding that neither he nor the other board memberswho include vice president Lynette Morales, secretary Jim Adams, treasurer Steve Bucklen, and member at large Kurt Weaver - are

salaried.

Hundreds of spectators watched the procession from porches and lawn chairs set up along the sidewalk, including crowds of children who used hats and buckets to catch pieces of candy thrown by people with the floats. The steady beat of drums and the melodies of several brass sections could be heard from outside of town, courtesy of the local high school and middle school marching bands.

As the parade finished its loop through town, the crowds of spectators flocked to the fairgrounds to start enjoying

the fair’s signature foods. Local residents enjoyed funnel cakes, pulled pork sandwiches, pit beef sandwiches, milkshakes and more as the opening day of the fair drew to a close.

The following day, he fair resumed its activities at 10 a.m. with a swine judging competition, followed by an antique tractor pull at 11 a.m.

The Holstein Feeder Calf Show took place at 3 p.m., and the lines for food vendors stretched across the fairgrounds throughout the day. At 5 p.m., the Uptown Band played a concert for fair atten-

dees in the lower ball field. The show was followed by an antique and classic tractor pull and a market steer show at 6 p.m. The day’s activities concluded with the annual baby parade at 7 p.m. in the upper ball field.

The final day of the fair kicked off at 10 a.m. with a tractor-driving contest between members of FFA, 4-H club affiliates and individuals confident in their tractor driving prowess. At 4:30 p.m., Keeley Kreider was crowned the 2023 Solanco Fair queen, and Emileigh Kreider was selected as the runner-up. The community-favorite celebrity

cow milking contest commenced at 5 p.m., and awards were given out for the youth participation contest at 5:45 p.m. Solanco residents between 12 and 18 years old received prizes for exhibit entries containing livestock, fresh produce, dairy products, artwork and apiary goods. Fair activities continued with a pedal tractor pull competition at 6 p.m. and the peanut and candy scramble. The 73rd annual Solanco Fair wrapped up with an Iron Man contest at 7:30 p.m.

Sierra Club plans hike

Members of the Sierra ClubLancaster Group invite the public to join them for an easy to moderate scenic hike through the Nolde Forest at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct, 14. The hike was scheduled for last spring but was postponed because of threatening weather.

The 725-acre Nolde Forest with its Environmental Education Center, 3025 New Holland Road, Reading, features deciduous woodlands and coniferous plantations, which are laced with networks of trails that meander along streams and ponds and through diverse habitats. In addition to being treated to a scenic walk beside a stream, hikers will be able to

view colorful autumn leaves, which should be at their prime.

Registration is required by visiting www.lancastersierraclub.org and clicking on the event link on the calendar. For more details, call 717-575-8705 or 717-475-0586 or email SierraClubEvent@gmail.com.

held on the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips.

For more information, call Jill at 717-239-1530.

isn’t picking up the mail because something’s wrong, you notice.”

Groff’s colleagues at the Quarryville Post Office threw a surprise retirement party for her on Sept. 21. In a bittersweet celebration, Groff’s fellow postal workers wished her well and mourned the office’s loss of an upstanding worker. “It was a sad moment. I didn’t want to see her go, but she had put in 37 years of service,” Hodgson said. “The knowledge she provided to so many in our craft was tremendous; she always took it upon herself to take new carriers under her wing.” When Hodgson started at the post office in 2019, Groff trained her in safe and effi-

cient practices and showed her the delivery route. Hodgson also cited Groff as her inspiration for becoming a supervisor to better understand and meet the needs of rural mail carriers.

Groff said she is kicking off her retirement with a new adventure. Her grandchild was born in August, and she looks forward to assuming the role of the little one’s babysitter once the baby’s mom goes back to work. “I’ll miss my work buddies and the people I got to know on my route,” Groff noted.

“I’ll never forget what she has done for me,” Hodgson added. “She was always willing to help anyone and to go the extra mile.”

Ephrata Cloister sets Community Day program

In the 1700s, Historic Ephrata Cloister was the town of Ephrata. Like any small village, it had craftsmen who wove cloth, baked bread and built houses. Ephrata also featured a printing office to produce books and a doctor to care for the sick.

These and other 18th-century activities will come to life as part of Community Day, an interactive educational program set for Friday, Oct. 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program is open to public and private schools, as well as homeschoolers. There will be an admission fee, with separate prices for students and for chaperones. Advance

reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling the Ephrata Cloister at 717-733-6600.

The hands-on program will offer at least a dozen different stations around the historic site, with each stop offering a 10- to 15-minute look at things such as lighting, clothing and writing in the 1700s community. Students will be free to travel in small groups with their chaperones in any order through the various interpretive stations.

A visit to the bakery will show that bread did not always come in plastic wrappers, and the carpenter will

explain that that not all roof shingles are made the same. Students will also visit the doctor and the schoolhouse, where they will learn how to write on stone.

Historic Ephrata Cloister is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates. For more information, visit www.Ephrata Cloister.org.

Persons with disabilities who need special assistance or accommodation should call in advance to discuss their needs. Pennsylvania TDD relay service is available at 800-654-5984.

Chicken barbecue and more planned at library

The Quarryville Library Center, at 357 Buck Road, will hold a chicken barbecue, yard sale and book sale on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event will be held rain or shine.

For a donation, attendees may receive a barbecued half-chicken cooked by the Wakefield Lions Club, along with a bag of potato chips and a bottle of water. Purchasing advance tickets is strongly encouraged. The

library will also offer whoopie pies for purchase at the event.

Inside the library, visitors may browse the book sale selection and the yard sale items donated by community members.

During the 2023 Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, 395 trucks

drove in the 26-mile convoy through Lancaster County and 50 Make-A-Wish kids rode along.

At the Convoy Celebration, the convoy committee was recognized for its dedication and commitment to make the 34th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy a success. Also in attendance were the four Wish Kid Ambas-

sadors whose stories were shared throughout the convoy campaign last year to inspire drivers throughout their fundraising efforts.

Choosing Halloween costumes for pets

Dressing up for Halloween

is a popular way to celebrate the spooky holiday, and many pet owners choose to include their companion animals in this activity. Data from a 2022 PetSmart national survey unveiled that more than 75% of pet owners planned to dress up their pets for Halloween and other fall occasions. Some individuals even planned to match their pet’s fall attire to their own.

There are plenty of costumes and pet clothing items designed for pets, but not all of them are recommended by

humane organizations or vets. People should keep the following tips in mind when selecting costumes for their pets.

Pet owners should check that the clothing item is sized appropriately so that it is not restrictive. The pet should be able to walk properly, jump, groom, and relieve itself. Pets should not be left in costumes for too long, as the clothing may affect the animal’s ability to control its body temperature.

Pet owners should watch for behaviors that may indi-

cate the pet is stressed by wearing the costume. Pets feeling anxious may groom excessively or make more noise than usual. Dogs may pant a lot or yawn. If a pet is pawing or pulling at the costume, it might be making the animal uncomfortable.

The pet should be able to relay body language while wearing the costume so it may communicate with other animals. Costumes could interfere with that ability. If the pet will be wearing the costume indoors and not in proximity to other animals, it

may be fine. Pets that will be walking outdoors and come into contact with other companion animals might act differently, and other animals may act aggressively when faced with a pet in a costume.

Pet owners should choose costumes that do not impede the pet’s vision or its ability to walk. The costume’s materials should also be fire-retardant and nontoxic.

Pet costumes are popular on Halloween, and pet parents can have fun celebrating while also keeping pets’ comfort and safety in mind.
