Cooking In The Kitchen With A Church Cookbook BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Members of the cookbook committee at the Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, have begun selling the church’s fourth-edition cookbook to benefit sanctuary renovations. Notable changes to the church

include the newly exposed balcony, two fieldstone additions on either side of the bell tower, and restoration of the ceiling with gold leaf details, antique German stainedglass windows, and the wooden pews, dating to circa 1914. Renovations took about a year and a half to complete, said cookbook committee member Linda Myers. See Cookbook pg 16

SHS Drama Club To Perform “Peter And The Starcatcher” BY COURTNEY MENGEL

or the first time since 2019, Solanco High School (SHS) will open its doors to paid audience members for its fall play. This year’s show is the Tony Award-winning Broadway sensation “Peter and the Starcatcher.” Adapted from the best-selling novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, “Peter and the Starcatcher” is a prequel to the classic story “Peter Pan.” The play follows an orphan boy with no name and Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training, as they attempt to protect magical “starstuff ” from falling into the hands of the pirate Black Stache and his accomplice Smee. Along the way, they must survive a shipwreck, killer natives who speak a culinary language, and a giant ticking

ladders, and more. SHS fall play director John Biles explained that storytelling in the theater means that the whole ensemble works together with those small props and set pieces to create the atmosphere and let the audience imagine what’s happening without having to “put page on stage.” “ With this show, we’re really going to let the audience enjoy the experience and let their imaginations take them wherever they go,” said John. John noted that those who are familiar with the story of Peter Pan will pick up on a lot of easter eggs in this production. “There’s a lot of really cool aspects to the show,” stated Sharp. “We’re going to have a lot of crazy lighting, and you may not expect this from a play, but there are a few songs in the show to enjoy.”

On Sept. 13, retired Col. Charles Bechtel of the First Cavalry Division Association and the Liberty War Birds Association took the microphone in a hangar at the Lancaster Airport in Lititz to welcome the gathering to the 100th anniversary celebration of the First Cavalry Division.

to ours,” said Mazzaro. Mazzaro was followed by Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons, who pointed out the Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts on those in attendance and thanked them for their service. Commissioner Ray D’Agostino read a letter of commendation from the commissioners, which noted the First Cavalry is one of the most decorated divisions in the Army. Sens. Ryan Aument and Scott Martin both attended and brought citations to the event. Aument said that the real story of the First Cavalry is the story of the soldiers, and he referenced the book “We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young,” by Harold G. Moore and Joseph L. Galloway, which was required reading for him in his military journey. Martin recalled his grandfather, who was a veteran, sharing stories about the First Cavalry with him when he was growing up. Bechtel also shared the story of the Liberty War Birds, specifically how the organization purchased and restored a Vietnam-era Huey that made an appearance at the event. Retired Chief Warrant Officer Chieu Van Le, who was a Huey pilot in the South Vietnamese Air Force, spoke to applause of his deep appreciation of the help his home country received from the U.S. He told the story of how a Huey helicopter saved his life in 1975, when he landed the chopper on the deck of a Navy ship.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Bechtel introduced guests, each of whom spoke to commemorate the occasion, and then Bechtel discussed the history of the First Cavalry Division, from its beginnings in Texas, pointing out its uniqueness in having originally fought wars on horseback and eventually with air assault weapons. Michael Mazzaro, who served in Vietnam, spoke for the James Unruh, Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the First Cavalry Division Association, and he awarded a First Cavalry plaque to Jane Unruh Good, sister of James Unruh, for whom the chapter is named. James was a Lancaster County native, who was awarded the Silver Star posthumously for service in Cambodia in 1970. “We proudly added his name

¼’s & ½’s BEEF For Your Freezer

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Aged, Black Angus, Healthy, No Antibiotics or Growth Hormones

Although November is only in its beginning stages, many people are counting down the days to Thanksgiving and Christmas. For some, the holiday season is the time for giving - whether it be giving to the community or to those who need a little extra help. With the goal of aiding families in need within southern Lancaster County, the Southern Hope Foundation (SHF) became an official nonprofit organization in 2019. In the past, SHF has provided families with presents, food, and funds for utility payments during holiday seasons. The foundation has also supported individuals during emergency situations, including financial assistance

with newborn needs, medical emergencies, and natural disasters such as house fires. The goal of SHF is to continue these efforts and help year-round. On Sunday, Nov. 28, SHF will hold its first in-person event in almost two years. SHF has planned a designer purse bingo event in the Hoffman Building on the Solanco Fairgrounds, Park Avenue, Quarryville. Doors will open at noon, and bingo will run from 1 to 4 p.m. The blackout prize will be a threepiece Michael Kors luggage set valued at over $1,000. There will also be door prizes and giveaways. Food, such as hot dogs, chips, and chicken corn soup from C. R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant, will be available for purchase. Ticket sales will not be guaranteed the day of the event, so it is strongly encouraged to prepurchase tickets by emailing southernhope foundation@gmail.com or messaging the organization on Facebook. Each ticket will include 20 games of bingo. Last Christmas, SHF helped 25 families. Proceeds from the upcoming designer purse bingo event will go toward the purchase of Christmas presents for even more families this year. To be considered for selection as one of the families, email the organization or message it on Facebook. Applications will not be accepted after Friday, Nov. 12. People can nominate families as well. SHF is looking for volunteers to help at the designer purse bingo event. For more information, search for “Southern Hope Foundation” on Facebook.

Gregory Frey Memorial Coat Drive And Giveaway Day Planned BY COURTNEY MENGEL

The year was 2013, and Gregory Frey was a junior at Penn Manor High School. To celebrate his 17th birthday, Gregory went on a fishing trip to Sullivan County with a friend and the friend’s family in late September. On the day they were supposed to come home, some of them went fishing. Gregory grew frustrated because his Gregory Frey Memorial Coat Drive volunteers walked in the line kept getting tangled, so he walked away. When Gregory’s friend Millersville Parade. went to find Gregory because it was time to leave, Gregory was found unconscious and unresponsive. CPR REAL ESTATE & PERSONAL PROPERTY was performed on Gregory for over 12.8+/- ACRES * LARGE HOME * HORSE BARN * GREENHOUSE an hour, but he was pronounced & OTHER OUTBUILDINGS * HOUSEHOLD GOODS, FURNITURE, dead at the hospital. TOOLS, LAWN & GARDEN, ETC. It has been eight years since the TH

incident, and the Frey family is still not entirely sure how Gregory passed away. Instead of taking the average eight weeks, Gregory’s autopsy took around 12 weeks, but results were inconclusive. In honor of Gregory, former Penn Manor School District crossing guard Charlee Seiple started a coat drive. Seiple saw firsthand how many kids needed warm clothing for winter, and she dedicated the coat drive to Gregory because “he was the kind of kid who would give you the shirt off his back,” stated Emily Frey, Gregory’s older sister. “My dad would always be like, ‘Where’s your such-and-such?’ And he would say, ‘Oh, I gave it to so-and-so because they needed it.’” Emily has been running the Gregory

Frey Memorial Coat Drive for the past six and a half years after Seiple moved out of state. Just last year, Emily made the Gregory Frey Memorial Coat Drive an official nonprofit organization. She and Gregory were born 14 months and two days apart. “He was my built-in best friend,” she said. People can donate their gently used or brand-new warm clothing, such as coats, gloves, hats, socks, shoes, and pajamas, until Saturday, Nov. 6. There are a number of donation locations. In Millersville, there are donation bins at Tropical Smoothie Café, Q Nails, Scheid Produce Inc., Hess Auto Care, Joe’s Shoe Service, Billie Jean’s Hair & Nail Studio, Gamber Physical Therapy & Fitness, Charles’ Laundry, and Bert’s

Bottle Shop. In Willow Street, donation bins are located at Change From Within Counseling Services, Morr Range, and Penn State Medical Health Group. In Manheim, there is a donation bin at America’s Auto Auction. Donation bins in Lancaster are located at Lanco Federal Credit Union, Penlanco Federal Credit Union, Prolook Uniform, Lancaster Recreation Commission, Almigos Mexican Restaurant & Grill, Orangetheory Fitness Lancaster West, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, and Go ‘N Bananas Family Fun Center. There are also donation bins at Complete In Box in Ephrata and Bethel Evangelical Congregation in Conestoga. See Memorial pg 13

the church’s history. CLPC historian Anna Mary Barcus wrote the church’s history while pastor John Hartman contributed a foreword and original poem to the publication. “It’s not just a cookbook,” stated cookbook committee member Sue Murphy. “There’s a lot more to read in there besides recipes. This book will be interesting to people not only from our church but also from the area.” “Recipes and Remembrances” features recipes from men, women, and older children, and it includes keto, paleo, and gluten-free recipes. In addition to Myers and Murphy, members of the CLPC cookbook committee are Joanne Ankrum, Deb Farmer, Vonnie McLaughlin, and Jess Myers. “Recipes and Remembrances” can be purchased at Waltman’s Hidden Treasures, Peach Bottom Consignment, Puttzin’, Stoner Decorating, DJ’s Salon, and Powl’s Feed Service, or by calling the CLPC office at 717-548-2763.

CLPC’s first cookbook was published in 1958, the second was released in 1995, and the third was printed in 2008. Work on the fourth edition began in May of this year. The cookbook committee collected recipes from June to August, and the committee members included every recipe that was submitted. As of late October, 1,008 copies of the 2021 CLPC cookbook had been printed, and over one-third of the copies had already been sold. The fourth-edition cookbook, compiled in a three-ring binder, is titled “Recipes and Remembrances” because more than 100 of its recipes were submitted in memory of loved ones. Additionally, readers can find brief memories from cooking in the Chestnut Level kitchen on the bottom of select pages. “Some are quite humorous,” noted Myers. “It’s been fun to read them.” The book is also filled with current and vintage photographs as well as an overview of
