Historical society will hold annual calendar and greens sale

Every winter, the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS) commissions a unique calendar illustrated by local artists and history enthusiasts. The annual project highlights various historic locations in the Southern End, and SLCHS sells the calendars as one of its largest fundraisers of the year. The 41st annual calendar sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, and from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, in SLCHS’ archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The calendar is also currently available to purchase at Kreider’s Market, 2396 Kirkwood Pike, Kirkwood, and Maplehofe Dairy, 799 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.

Each page of the yearly calendar features an artist’s interpretation of a photo from SLCHS’ archives. Artists may alter the subject by removing or adding certain elements, but each illustration must be made using graphite or pen and ink.

SLCHS highlights a different collection of historic locations every year, including buildings such as old storefronts, blacksmith shops, churches, schools and homes. Some featured structures are still standing today, and others may only be seen in photographs and old records.

As a rule, SLCHS never features landscapes in the calendar. Although the subjects are typically buildings, the calendar occasionally highlights machines such as trolleys, threshers and other historically significant contraptions located in Martic Township or Solanco School District. In addition to a unique illustration, each page includes background information about the subject as well as a few words about the artist.

SLCHS will hold a greens sale concurrent with its calendar sale on Dec. 7 and 8 in the archives building. Members of the organization will sell Christmas decorations and custom-made wreaths that volunteers have assembled by hand.

The proceeds from the calendar sale and greens sale will help SLCHS cover its

CDC helps kids comprehend reading in entirely different ways

Dyslexia is something that we might not fully understand. Dyslexia may be something we don’t talk enough about. Dyslexia might be more prevalent than we realize.

It’s a learning disorder that Children’s Dyslexia Center (CDC) of Lancaster can help manage and, in some instances, even overcome.

“What everyone needs to

understand is that (dyslexia is) neurological, it runs in families and it affects language processing,” said Heather Brown, who’s been CDC of Lancaster’s director for 10 years. “What it’s not is reading backwards. It’s about how kids process language, how the brain processes language. Words and sentences look the same, but it’s daunting to read. Students work so hard to get through paragraphs that by the end of them they don’t remember the meaning. You have

A Quarryville Christmas

Like many parts of Lancaster County, Quarryville has a plethora of unique traditions that its residents observe every winter during the holiday season. Local businesses and community members participate in annual events and festivities to get into the Christmas spirit, including time-honored customs and new traditions created in recent years.

One of Quarryville’s holiday traditions is Midnight Gladness, an event that takes place on the weekday before Christmas Eve

every year. During Midnight Gladness, businesses such as Good’s Store, Martin Appliance, Berkshire Hathaway and Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard remain open later than normal to offer special promotions, serve hot chocolate and offer local residents an opportunity to finish their last-minute Christmas shopping. Although some businesses don’t stay open all the way until midnight, each participant offers its visitors various discounts and activities for the evening. In addition to local businesses, nonprofits such as New Hope Community Closet participate in

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will offer a field trip to Chestnut Grove Natural Area in Conestoga on Saturday, Dec. 7, with an 8 a.m. start. The field trip is free and open to the public. Target birds are winter residents including several species of sparrows. Those who plan to attend should contact leader Sarah Gotwols by calling or texting 717-940-3804 or emailing sarahann71880@gmail.com by 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6. If necessary, weather-related cancellations will be made the day prior to the event and registered participants will be notified.

Additionally, the club will meet on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster.

Stefan Karkuff from the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) will present “PGC’s Initiatives for Recovering PA’s Birds.” Many of Pennsylvania’s bird species are in decline, and the PGC is working on several statewide initiatives to help reverse these trends for some species. Karkuff will discuss many of the ongoing recovery projects in detail, from kestrel and barn

owl efforts to habitat management for grassland species. He will preview some of the upcoming projects that are just taking flight, including recovery of aerial insectivores, GPS tracking state-endangered species, and nightjar surveys.

Karkuff grew up in Cumberland County, where he became enthusiastic about birding as a young teenager. He attended Ithaca College for his undergraduate studies and then went to the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse to earn a master’s degree in conservation biology. After graduate school, he returned to central Pennsylvania as a Pheasants Forever biologist working with local farmers to create wildlife habitat on private lands, mainly by converting cropland to grassland habitat. In 2022 he took a position with the PGC as the avian recovery biologist working on statewide initiatives to recover Pennsylvania’s declining bird species.

The program is free and open to the public. For more details, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717 for questions.

Comet matmen to host holiday tourney

The 37th annual Penn Manor holiday wrestling tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14, at Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Wrestling will begin on Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 9:30 a.m. Finals will get underway at approximately 3 p.m. on Dec. 14.

Families invited to sign up for dinner giveaway

The 38th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with Giant Foods and United Way of Lancaster to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 21.

The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.

Families must preregister for this event by Friday, Dec. 13, by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341. Volunteers will deliver the meals.

The project anticipates distributing approximately 2,700 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County during the holiday season.

In addition to this

year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue the partnership with Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas.

LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the rising costs of the groceries for the food boxes. The project relies on individual donations for more than two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made at www.lcpn.org.

The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

Mattress store offers holiday photo booth

This holiday season, Gardner’s Mattress & More is offering a decorated photo set, offering families and friends the chance to create lasting memories - all for free.

Co-owner Jeff Giagnocavo has adorned the store with festive decorations, Christmas lights and cheerful displays across the railings and

Midnight Gladness, which will take place on Monday, Dec. 23, this year.

Midnight Gladness was started by Good’s Store in 1995, and it has continued to be held annually with the exception of a brief hiatus in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The goal of the event was to offer modified prices and promotions at each of Good’s Store’s locations, which include storefronts in Quarryville, Schaefferstown and East Earl. In addition to offering different promotions at specific times throughout the day, the stores typically give small presents to children ages 12 and under and complimentary snacks to shoppers. “It always feels like a festive atmosphere,” said Daniel Zimmerman, marketing manager at Good’s Store. “The idea right from the start was to make this a fun evening to invite people into our stores.”

a community event that involves the whole town. “People often come from as far as Maryland or York County,” Zimmerman said. “We’re looking forward to having it again.”

One of Quarryville’s more recently established Christmas traditions is Christmas in Q-ville, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Solanco Fairgrounds on Park Avenue. The event will be held from 2 to 7 p.m., and it will feature food trucks, fireworks, gingerbread house competitions, Christmas light displays, a live Nativity and other holiday activities.

Christmas in Q-ville is the brainchild of Michelle Evans of the Quarryville Borough Authority, who proposed creating an annual, community-wide Christmas celebration. The first event took place in December 2022, and thousands of attendees have continued to enjoy its festivities every year since.

Good’s Store’s East Earl and Schaefferstown locations are close to other businesses such as Shady Maple and Dutch-Way Farm Market, and the store’s neighbors normally collaborate to make Midnight Gladness a large event. But the Good’s Store in Quarryville is located in a standalone building instead of a complex or shared lot. Over the years, Good’s Store has reached out to local businesses throughout Quarryville to make Midnight Gladness

to break the reading code. We teach kids how to break that code, so it frees the brain up.”

Located at 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, CDC of Lancaster teaches schoolage children with dyslexia from Lancaster, Dauphin, York, Chester and Lebanon counties how to read, write and spell. Much of the work is performed in one-on-one settings after school.

CDC of Lancaster also trains adults how to tutor kids with dyslexia. All of its services are provided free of charge.

“(The number of people affected by dyslexia is) a hard number to quantify,” said Brown. “It’s estimated that between 10% and 20% of the population has some form of dyslexia. I’d say that half of our parents are undiagnosed dyslexics. But only 8% of the population is getting tested.”

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the literacy rate among adults in the United States is 79%.

CDC of Lancaster, which employs about a dozen instructors, works with about 20 kids with some form of dyslexia each semester, or about 40 per year.

“They come here after a day of school and push through an hour of hard tutoring,” said Brown. “For a lot of our kids, it takes them two or three times longer to read than their peers. When they see how easy it is for their peers, it becomes frustrating. They’re on the same level, but they’re putting forth so much more effort. But you need to read to succeed. We accomplish our goals by putting one step in front of the other every day. We teach kids how to be confident readers and writers.”

“Most of our students are born with dyslexia, so it can

be hereditary,” Brown continued. “It’s neurological. It’s how we’re born. Somebody can be really good at math and others not as good. It’s the same with reading. For some kids, it takes longer to read. There are even different kinds of dyslexia. We teach kids the steps to overcome the challenges with dyslexia.”

A regional organization associated with the Scottish Rite of Masons of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, CDC operates more than 40 centers in 13 states in New England, Pennsylvania, Ohio and parts of the Midwest. Since being established in 2002, CDC of Lancaster has helped more than 260 kids with dyslexia, 150 of whom have graduated from its program.

“The science behind this isn’t fancy,” said Brown. “It’s breaking down the reading code, and a lot of it hasn’t changed. We want to build confidence in our students so they can succeed. We teach the why behind language to make meaning of it.”

CDC of Lancaster performs its work independently and is not associated with any public or private schools.

“It costs money to treat (dyslexia), and it’s expensive,” said Brown. “The good news is that Pennsylvania is starting to recognize it and they’re starting to teach the science of reading. They are requiring reading teachers to take classes in the science of reading.”

“I wish we didn’t exist,” Brown added. “I wish we didn’t have to have a Children’s Dyslexia Center because schools were teaching their students with dyslexia.”

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will present 18th-century Yuletide tours on Friday, Dec. 27, with timed entries at 4, 5, and 6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 28 and 29, with timed entries at 2, 3, and 4 p.m.

The General Edward Hand Mansion will be decorated with festive greenery in the style of the 1790s. In the mansion, visitors will find period dance and open-hearth cooking demonstrations and live harpsichord and violin music. Visitors will also be able to hear the voice of an actor portraying Edward Hand in his study recounting his memories of Christmas night in 1776, when he and his men crossed the Delaware River and launched a surprise attack against the Hessian Garrison at Trenton, N.J.

at Rock Ford, the traditional English Christmas was celebrated as Yuletide, a period of gatherings, games, ghost stories, dancing, and dining with family and friends. Yuletide extended over the 12-day period from Dec. 25, which was mostly a day for religious observance, and culminating in Twelfth Night on Jan. 6, which was sometimes celebrated with a ball or an elaborate feast highlighted with a special cake. When gifts were exchanged at all, they tended to be small items or tokens of affection and were usually given on New Year’s Day rather than as part of the Christmas celebration.

Due to limited guest capacity, advance ticket purchasing is recommended through http:// rockford.yapsody.com.

Admission is free for children age 5 and under.
