On Oct. 22, Lancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Country Rock Group of the Year award at the ninth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The Jess Zimmerman Band is led by Jess Heitz, who is accompanied by guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis. This is the second year the outfit has been nominated for awards at the ceremony, which was hosted at the famous American country music venue the Grand Ole Opry. Last year, The Jess Zimmerman Band received the Album of the Year award for its debut album “Breathe.” This year, in addition to being nominated for multiple awards, the band performed during the ceremony. Out of nearly 1,000 applicants, only 10 artists were selected to play at the event. “It was really one of the biggest highlights of the year,” Heitz said. “The Grand Ole Opry is iconic for country music.” The Jess Zimmerman Band performed songs from an album released in May, titled “Be The Light.” “The idea behind ‘Be The See Local band pg 2

n Nov. 20, local companies CH+N Site Construction and Hassel’s Roll-O ff Ser vice teamed up with the Southern End Community Association (SECA) to make a few improvements to Memorial Park, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. The businesses volunteered their time and equipment to make the recreation area a safer place for members of the community to enjoy, as well as more pleasing to the eye. The partnership was suggested by Robbie Hassel, who serves as both a project coordinator for CH+N Site and one of SECA’s board members. Earlier this year, the community association drafted a list of goals to improve the park and repair areas that had become less safe or were rundown from decades of use. One of SECA’s goals was to repaint the lines in its parking lot, and Hassel saw the potential for CH+N Site to help with the project. Hassel took the idea to Matt Eshelman, president of CH+N Site, who hardly needed to be convinced to jump on board. “It’s super important to us that we give back to the community,” Eshelman said. “He told me what he wanted to do and why, and it fit that goal perfectly. We were able to give back to the place a lot

Following The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success at last year’s Josie Music Awards, the group had opportunities throughout the year to share the stage with artists such as Shania Twain, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. “It’s been quite a year,” said Heitz. “Winning Album of the Year helped set the tone for 2023. of us live.” Although CH+N Site’s office is located in Lancaster, many of Eshelman’s employees live in Quarryville, and Eshleman is a former resident of the area. Volunteers from CH+N Site spent the day restriping the entire parking lot, including designated parking spaces for people with disabilities. Trevor Marsh, director of SECA, said the restoration of the parking spaces was one of his main priorities; SECA hosts a bingo night every other Friday that is regularly attended by senior community members who require accessible parking. The lines in the parking lot, which had become faded over the years, are now highly visible. The volunteers offered to help with a few other projects at the park, such as removing several tree stumps that had been an eyesore for years. CH+N Site workers also installed eight concrete bumper
blocks in the parking lot, in addition to placing a concrete end wall at the end of a pipe connected to the pond. Hassel’s Roll-Off Service provided a dumpster for various waste items that volunteers cleaned up throughout the park. “We advertised a few of the projects we were hoping to get completed in November, so it was a blessing to have (the volunteers) lend a hand literally days after,” Marsh said. “As far as future projects, the list is very long, but we want to revamp the park and bring it back to life.” SECA will have a board meeting in January to discuss its goals and initiatives to improve the park in the new year. Hassel said CH+N Site plans to continue its annual tradition of spending a day to complete a project to benefit the local community. “This year was SECA; next year could be them again or another organization in the area,” added Hassel.

Many people consider New Year’s Day the unofficial end of the holiday season. That often means that New Year’s Eve is an opportunity to socialize, gather and party one final time before returning to the routines of daily life. The first known instance of New Year’s celebrations can be traced to around 2,000 B.C. in the region of Mesopotamia. Celebrants gathered in March, rather than January, as this was the time of the vernal equinox, when the darkness of winter subsided and agricultural life could begin anew. A s individuals count down the days until New Year’s Eve festivities, the following planning tips may make the celebrations occasions to remember. Party planners may consider giving their event a theme. Guests can come dressed as dynamic duos
like Mario and Luigi, or the party can evoke a bygone era, such as the Roaring ‘20s. Let guests know what they can do to play the part. Decorations should be tied into the theme as well. Classic New Year’s Eve decorations include balloons, streamers and confetti. Hosts may consider a festive balloon arch or backdrop that also can serve as a place to pose for photo opportunities. In order to avoid guests becoming wiped out by the time midnight arrives, start the party at around 9 or 10 p.m. and anticipate its lasting into the wee hours of the morning. Hosts may also tailor d r i n k s to t h e s e a s o n . They may utilize seasonal ingredients when crafting drinks or serve drinks that are expected at this time of year, such as eggnog that includes alcohol or cranberry Moscow mules.

There are few things more detrimental to development than kids growing up without parental figures. Conversely, there are few things that possess more healing power than music. Scaling Walls A Note at a Time (SWAN) is performing some wonderful work with music and kids in the school district of Lancaster who have been affected by their parents’ incarceration. An organization without a brick-and-mortar building or office, SWAN is currently serving about 80 Lancaster city kids ages 5 to 17. “ S WA N ’s m u s i c a n d mental health program is a unique and innovative model,” said Diana Vuolo, SWAN’s founder and executive director. “The School District of Lancaster gets to be leaders. There is a mental health crisis among youth, and we are a solution. The impact SWAN has had has been lifesaving for some children and life-changing for many.” Vuolo estimated that on any given day in Lancaster County, 3,000 kids are affected by parental incarceration. She also said that there are 900 to 1,000 homeless children in the city of Lancaster and that many of them are affected by incarceration. “Incarceration has a great impact on children,” said Vuolo. “Of course, it separates them from their parents, and they have a sense of abandonment. There could be alcohol or drug abuse involved. Children
can experience domestic violence.” “Parents are the primary people that children trust,” continued Vuolo. “When that is removed, trust is remove d. T heir whole sense of self is lost. You’ll find they have difficulty learning. It often crushes them or breaks them.” SWAN identifies kids through school counselors and then reaches them through music, music lessons, singing, dancing and playing instruments like the violin, guitar, ukulele, drums and bass. But there are als o p er for mance , mentoring and spiritual counseling pieces involved with what it does. “Research underscores how much music helps develop brains,” said Vuolo. “By playing an instrument, kids can express themselves without words. It helps them socially. They have to focus. Our children may believe trauma is normal. By making music, they’re more likely to talk when they have a problem. It brings about healing physically, mentally, scholastically and behaviorally.” Music also inspires work ethic, teamwork and achievement. As SWAN kids become more comfortable and advanced, they are afforded opportunities to present what they’ve learned musically. “Their performances are very important,” said Vuolo. “They get applauded and see that they have success. They gain confidence. They start owning the stage. It gives our students the joy See SWAN pg 9

of giving back to others. It’s an identity that’s very positive.” Vuolo was a violin professor at Lancaster Bible College in 2011 when she founded SWAN. “I saw the impact music had on children,” said Vuolo, a 68-year-old resident of Downingtown. “My husband was counseling inmates and I started to observe how trauma impacted children. I’m an advocate for children. That’s how SWAN got started.” “I star ted an afterschool program and then the School District of Lancaster became interested,” Vuolo continued.
