A half-century has elapsed since Roy Glackin Sr. began his association with the Solanco Fair. This year, the premium book was dedicated in his honor. In 1962, Roy worked for Ray’s Appliances and was one of the employees who talked with fairgoers about the latest innovations in home appliances. By 1971, he had started his own business, working with electrical systems. That year, he was hired by the fair board to fill the role of fair electrician that Milford Campbell had vacated. “Back then, the only permanent structure on the fair ground was the french fry stand,” Roy recalled. “The exhibits were hung in tractortrailers, so we had to put lights in them.” The technology of electrical power was still fairly rustic when Roy became the electrician. The first year of his service, the fair kitchen was located in a tent close to the fair ground’s only power pole. On the first night of the fair, the kitchen drew so much power from the pole that the PPL cable caught fire. “We ended up using generators for several years,” Roy said. “At the time, with all the tents, we had more electric (wires) to run. We (also) had to ration power. Back then, we had a 400 Amp box. Now, there are 2,000 Amps available.” Roy’s last year of official service for the fair was 1988, the year that Hurricane Hugo swept into the area. “It blew down a bunch of tents, so I (made an executive decision) and went down and turned the power off,” Roy recalled. In his 18 years as head electrician, Roy developed a system. He began working at 7 a.m. on the Saturday before the fair, pulling the materials he needed from where it was stored in the upper floor of the Agway building in Quarryville. Then, if the tents were up, he began running wire. “If the tents weren’t up, we couldn’t do a lot,” he remarked. Each tent received three
strings of wire for lights, as well as a row of receptacles. “We tried to be as safe as possible, but it was temporary wiring,” Roy pointed out. Regarding the fair book dedication, Roy described himself as timid. “I was paid for my time, whereas most of the other people (involved with producing the fair) were volunteer,” he explained. “We had a lot of regular, good helpers that showed up. I couldn’t have begun to do it myself. Ralph Regitz worked together with me a lot. (He) is still helping. Robah Hess, he was a big help to me, (as was) Martin Stoner and many others.” After Roy turned the responsibility of fair electrician over to Larry Myers, he returned as a volunteer for a few years. “I enjoyed the camaraderie of working with the people as much as anything,” he remarked. “The responsibility was a good feeling, because you were trusted.” Taking the week off to install and remove the wiring, as well as to be on-call during the fair, was also part of Roy’s way of giving back to the community. “A lot of the farmers were my customers; I did work for them on their farms,” Roy said. “(The fair) was a community thing. I was doing a service to the community (by) helping my customers out with their part in the fair.” While Roy no longer takes quite an active role in the fair’s operations, his wife, Sandra, is as busy as ever. When Roy was the electrician, Sandra was the “go-fer,” driving up to Lancaster to pick up muchneeded parts. For the past 25 years, she has coordinated the rentals of the buildings on the fair grounds. Currently, she is taking reservations through 2014. “I’m on the phone a lot,” Sandra said. “Do I enjoy it? Oh, yeah. It keeps me from getting bored.” The Glackins currently live in New Providence. They have four adult children, 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

There are also 4-H clubs covering sciences and technology, from rocketry to robotics. 4-H clubs are also very active in community service work, and projects have included raising puppies to become service dogs and doing hands-on projects for neighbors. Recent studies show clear benefits for youths who participate in 4-H. According to information on the 4-H website, www.4-H.org, club members are nearly two times more likely to get better grades in school, nearly two times more likely to plan to go to college, 41 percent less likely to engage in risky behaviors, and 25 percent more likely to positively contribute to their families and communities. Over the years, 4-H has expanded around the world through the International Farm Youth Exchange, and it has helped to develop similar 4-H programs in 80 countries worldwide. To preserve the wide history of 4-H and to help keep it accessible to future generations, the National 4-H History Preservation Program was created. Four special baking contests will return to the Solanco Fair this year. Pennsylvania residents of all ages may enter the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie, Pennsylvania’s INCREDIBLE! Angel Food Cake, and the PA Preferred chocolate cake contests, while youths are invited to enter the PA Preferred cookie, brownie, or bar competition. A few changes have been made to the chocolate baking contests due to the participation of new cosponsor PA Preferred. A state-sponsored agricultural marketing program, PA Preferred identifies and promotes food and agricultural products grown, produced, or processed in Pennsylvania. Both the chocolate cake and youthonly cookie, brownie, or bar contests require chocolate or cocoa to be a main ingredient in the recipe, as well as the use of as many PA Preferred products in the recipe as possible. All PA Preferred product labels, including the name of the product, must accompany the recipe. The Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest is sponsored by the PA Apple Marketing Board. To qualify for the contest, entrants’ pies must contain filling that is at least 60 percent apple.
Pennsylvania’s INCREDIBLE! Angel Food Cake contest is cosponsored by the Pennsylvania Egg Farmers. Pennsylvania-produced and-packed eggs are requested to be used if possible. Bakers should look for PEQAP, PA Preferred, or PA packaging dates on the carton. All of the baking contests require that recipes listing all ingredients, quantities, and the preparation instructions be submitted with the entry, printed on one side of 8 1/2 by 11-inch paper. The entrant’s name, address, phone number, and exhibitor number must in included on the other side of the recipe. The certified winners of these contests are eligible to participate in the state competitions at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg in January 2013. Entries must be delivered to the Solanco Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 18, between noon and 10 p.m. For more detailed information, readers may refer to fair premium books or visit “Baking Contests” at www.solancofair.net. Questions about the contests may be directed to chairperson Marty Henry at 786-2948.

Meet The Artist By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Young artist Lyla Damiano is the designer of the cover art for this year’s Solanco Fair premium book. Lyla’s design, featuring some of her favorite things from the fair, was the winning entry this spring in the districtwide contest for Solanco middle school students. As a student at Smith Middle School, Lyla has been a member of the school art club. Her favorite classes are math, art, and phys ed. “I’m really into being active, so I play field hockey and run track, and I like to work out at the gym,” she said, adding that she is also a member of the St. Catherine of Sienna youth group. The Damiano family moved to the area from New Jersey ten years ago. The Solanco Fair is a popular event for the entire family. Lyla attends the fair each year with her parents, Michelle and Paul, and her younger sister, Kylee. “I go to look at the animals,” Lyla said. “I like getting to see all the animals and getting to see the culture of our area, with the agriculture and everything. I do find it interesting – it’s different, so it’s an interesting experience.” The goats are one of Lyla’s favorite animals at the fair, so it is not surprising that she included a picture of a goat in her winning drawing. “I always like to go up and pet (the goats),” she said. Along with the goat in her drawing, there is a
tractor, cornstalks, and an opening to a tent. “I brainstormed before I did (the drawing) to find out what we had seen the year before, and (then) put it in the drawing,” Lyla said. Lyla has designed T-shirts and entered other contests, but she was not sure how well she would do in the cover contest. “I had no idea what Swift (middle school’s) entries were like,” she said. Lyla’s mother was not too surprised that Lyla won the contest. “She just really has an eye for art, and she’s very good at it,” Michelle said. “I’m very proud of her.” Lyla is looking forward to the start of the Solanco Fair this year. “I want to check out the art,” she said, adding that she also likes to visit the rabbit exhibit, and she looks forward to eating funnel cakes. Fourteen-year-old Lyla is attending Lancaster Catholic High School this year. After graduating, she hopes to keep art as a hobby. For a career, she is looking toward the medical professions. “I would love to be a physical therapist or something in the medical industry,” she said.

Spinning A Yarn By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“Where did Sleeping Beauty prick her finger?” is a question frequently heard by the members of the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild (LSWG). Today’s compact and efficient spinning wheels bear little resemblance to the large walking wheels used during the time of the fairy tale’s writing. They are also much less lethal. Spinning is the art of twisting fibers together to form yarn or thread, which can then be knit, crocheted, or woven into fabric. Visitors to the Solanco Fair on Thursday, Sept. 20, are invited to stop by the small arena between 4 and 7 p.m. to watch LSWG members ply their craft. “Solanco (Fair) is fun,” said LSWG co-chair Beth Sterling of Holtwood. “We’ll
have a weaver and several spinners, and we’ll put a fleece out to show what raw wool looks like.” The guild has given fiber demonstrations at the Solanco Fair for about five years, although the group has been around for much longer. Co-chair Faye
Hegener of Liberty Square in Drumore Township estimated that the guild was founded in the 1970s, if not earlier. Contrary to its name, the guild is not limited to spinning and weaving. According to the group’s website, www.lancspinweaveguild.org, “The purpose of the guild is to meet and exchange ideas, to help and encourage all fiber enthusiasts in an altruistic manner to achieve the highest standards of excellence; to conduct workshops for instruction of members; to stimulate public interest in, and appreciation for the fiber arts.” Individuals with interests in spinning and weaving, as well as knitting, crocheting, felting, rug hooking, shepherding, cultivating plant fibers, traditional living, and other fiber arts are welcome. At a guild retreat in August, attendees worked on punch-needle rug hooking, knitting, crochet, sock machine knitting, weaving, and spinning projects. See Yarn on page 16

Rhoads Energy To Sponsor Special Music By Dayna M. Reidenouer
In 1917, Jerome H. Rhoads began selling kerosene from the back of a rail car in Quarryville. Now, 95 years later, the company known as Rhoads Energy has grown into a multi-faceted company, offering everything from heating oil to commercial fueling to heating and air conditioning equipment installation. “We’re pretty excited about (the anniversary),” said president and CEO Michael DeBerdine III. To celebrate, the company is sponsoring a special performance of The Uptown Band during the Solanco Community Fair. The band will perform on the lower ball field on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., with a break between 7:30 and 8 p.m. A July 2011 review of the group by Randy Patterson of Boomerocity.com in Dallas, Texas, described The Uptown Band as “a newlywed husband and wife team consisting of Erich Cawalla and Jenifer
Kinder, who deliver a skillful blend of pop, jazz, R&B and funk. How’s that for an eclectic yet tasteful mix?” This is the second time that Rhoads Energy has sponsored a band at the fair. The first time was also to mark an anniversary, but DeBerdine did not recall which one. Although Rhoads Energy has moved its headquarters to Lancaster city, the company still operates a location in Quarryville and has remained a family-owned business since its inception. The DeBerdines currently own the business. “My grandfather, Michael Sr., was Mr. Rhoads’ helper,” DeBerdine explained. “He was an orphan, and Mr. Rhoads brought him along.” As an adult, Michael Sr. and his wife worked as waiters and cooks in Rhoads’ restaurant, which was located where Caruso’s is now. “Their version of child care was to put my father in a high chair while they worked,” DeBerdine related.
Michael Jr. graduated from Quarryville High School in 1955, and Michael III graduated from Solanco High School in 1983. Their family has been involved with the Solanco Fair through the company since before the youngest Michael’s birth. “We think it’s a great community event,” DeBerdine said. “It’s a nice opportunity for the community to come together. What better venue to thank the people who have supported us through the years?”

Saddle Up Your Horses By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Area 4-H clubs of all kinds, including the Rough Riders Horse Club, are involved in the Solanco Fair. Members of the club can be seen taking part in the fair parade each year, with both a float and riders. “The kids really, really enjoy it. Whatever the theme is for the parade, they come up with the ideas, and we try to do something where we have a wagon or a float-type thing,” group leader Debbie Anspach explained. “They really enjoy getting together and planning it together.” Anspach noted that the group uses a float because not all of the children’s horses are suited to handle the noise and
excitement of the parade. “If kids do have horses that they can safely ride in the parade, we encourage doing that,” she said. Eleven-year-old Janet Hershey is in her third year as a Rough Riders member and enjoys taking part in the parade. “It’s fun hearing all the cheers that you get from the crowd,” said Hershey, who has ridden both on the group float and on her horse in previous parades. “It’s more fun to be on the horse,” she noted. Fellow member Morgan Whaley agrees that the parade is a great event. “I think it’s really fun. It’s fun to see all the
people,” she said. Rough Riders currently has 29 members ages 8 to 18, drawn from Solanco, Penn Manor, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Pequea Valley school districts. “We do have some horseless kids, so they may participate in helping us with pony rides, or we try to find horses for them to use,” Anspach said. “Some are not able to support a horse, so they participate in ‘nonhorsey’ events.”
Like other 4-H clubs, the Rough Riders organize events to fit the interests of the members. “We work with whatever they would like to do,” Anspach said. “4-H is about learning and being exposed to different types of riding. Some of them like English, some of them like Western, some of them do Western Pleasure, some of them do Western racing. We have kids that like to jump and kids that just want See Horses on page 16

Horses from page 15 to ride.” Activities for the club cover a wide range of interests. “We’re a very busy club,” Anspach commented. “We start with some clinics, (where) we like to teach the children how to show their horse at halter, which is typical 4-H. We (also) hold one or two riding clinics to help the children with whatever level they are at. We have some kids that know very little about horses, and we have some kids that are quite skilled.” In addition, the club participates in horse shows, trail rides, and a popular overnight campout with the horses. The entire club experience is one that children appreciate for a lifetime. “It’s a lot of fun for the kids,” A n s p a c h remarked. “It’s a way for the kids to express
their love of horses and to make friends and grow as individuals with kids that share that same love.” Participating in 4-H is often an interest that is handed down through generations. Christine Jackson never had the chance to be a 4-H member, but she wanted her daughters to have that experience. “They learn responsibility, morals, ethics and get an education on caring for their animals,” she said. “I always wanted a horse, and my daughter was born with the same passion, so I made sure it happened for her. I had some friends that were in 4-H growing up and they seemed to get lifetime friendships out of it.” As for the excitement of the Solanco Parade, Jackson sees how much all the children enjoy the event. “It is a wonderful memory that they cherish each year,” she said. “They’re having a blast building the float and being in the parade.”
Yarn from page 13 “This is the place to launch your interest,” Sterling wrote on the guild’s website. “You can learn the lingo, the technique, and all the infinite possibilities of the fiber arts, which will lead to a rewarding lifelong activity. And if you already are established in the fiber arts, what a great way to stay on top of the art and make new friends.” Fiber arts are also a great way to connect with history while innovating for the future. “I love history. I used to sit at my grandmother’s knee listening to stories of life in the Southern End,” Hegener recalled. “At Landis Valley (Farm Museum), I saw someone spinning … and got into re-enacting, then bobbin lace and tatting. I like to do things the old way. Spinning is so relaxing.” “I like the historical aspect of it,” Sterling agreed. “My grandmother tatted, and the little seed was planted.”
Sterling’s father grew up on a farm, and he passed a passion for agrarian life on to his daughter. A former FFA member, Sterling still recalls her first three sheep, Minnie, Mandie, and Maggie, whom she showed at the Solanco and West Lampeter fairs before exhibiting and selling at the Manheim Farm Show. She also recalled her initial frustration with needlework, saying, “My mom sewed and embroidered pillowcases, so I embroidered a pillowcase. It took me two years, and (then) a chocolate milkshake spilled all over it.” Now, Sterling enjoys knitting, crocheting, and spinning, and she also processes fleeces into fiber ready for spinning. She and Hegener are looking forward to sharing their passion for fiber arts with Solanco Fair visitors. “It’s for the love of the fiber,” Sterling remarked.
