THE SOUTHERN LANCASTER COUNTY FAIR ASSOCIATION WELCOMES YOU TO ITS ANNUAL AGRICULTURE FAIR. Experience the same wholesome atmosphere filled with fellowship, food and friendly competition today that the founders of the Solanco Fair envisioned over 60 years ago. In the spring of 1950, a group of farm women enthusiastically decided that the Solanco area needed a fair of its own. With the help of many different community and agricultural based organizations, in September of that same year, the first Solanco Fair made its debut and was here to stay. The Solanco Fair is not only a vital part of the Southern End Community; it reflects the spirit and values of the individuals living in the community. Dedicated citizens volunteer their time and many talents throughout the year to ensure a successful event. At the fair, they can be found diligently working to supervise the many behind-the-scenes details that make the event run like a well-oiled machine. It is with deep appreciation that we say thank you to these friends, businesses and community organizations.
Attracting individuals of all ages, the Solanco Fair is a work in progress. Over the years, the fair has both improved and built new facilities on the fairgrounds, added new entertaining events to its three-day line-up, and welcomed new categories in which to display competitive handiwork. While the fair association works to see that the Solanco Fair changes to meet the needs of the growing community, it is also a source of pride that the fair retains much of the same community spirit, volunteer dedication, and agricultural heritage as that of the very first fair. Every September in Southern Lancaster County you will find FFA and 4-H members grooming their animals for show, proud cooks in their kitchen baking treats for the judges to sample, farmers and gardeners choosing their produce for competition, young children participating in the parades, and an overall enthusiastic and excited attitude in the citizens of the Solanco area. It’s fair time – won’t you join us? - The Southern Lancaster County Fair Association

Thursday Evening To Feature Music
We’ve Got Plenty of Leaf Blowers & Other Lawn & Autumn Accessories
By Marcella Peyre-Ferry Music is not new to the Solanco Fair, but it is not always a regular feature. This year, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy Erich Cawalla and the Uptown Band on Thursday, Sept. 21, from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by the popular tug-of-war contest. The stage will be set up on the lower baseball field, with the grassy hillside making a perfect seating area. Attendees may bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The Uptown Band specializes in instrumental hits from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s that are perfect for dancing. There will not be an actual dance floor, but those who would like to dance are welcome to do so. The Uptown Band was formed in Berks County in late 2005. Its playlist includes both original and cover songs with elements of R&B, jazz, soul, funk, pop, and rock. Attendees will be sure to recognize the hit songs from recent decades that spark memories. “It’s a very family-friendly band,” fair board president Brian Mull said. “We like to have a band that will appeal to most people.”

Dick And Jean Risk
Parade Grand Marshals
Jean (left) and Dick Risk of Quarryville will serve as grand marshals of the Solanco Fair Parade. By Dayna M. Reidenouer For some people, involvement with the Solanco Fair starts in childhood. In the case of Dick and Jean Risk of Quarryville, who have been selected as the grand marshals of the 2017 Solanco Fair Parade, involvement started after marriage. Dick grew up in what was once the Unicorn Hotel below Mechanic Grove, and Jean was raised in the Peach Bottom area. They attended the same school and Little Britain Presbyterian Church. Their relationship blossomed during a trip to Sandy Cove with young people from church. The couple was married on Sept. 22, 1956, and the Risks will mark their 61st anniversary on the last day of the fair. As a young housewife, Jean was asked to bake for the fair. “Ladies in the community would make pies for the restaurant,” she recalled. “Someone from the committee would call and tell us what day to have them there.” At the time, the fair was not held in a central location like it is today. “I can remember they had different displays in churches and at Newswanger’s Furniture,” Dick said. “You went around town to see the exhibits,” Jean added. As the fair changed, so did the Risks’ involvement. Jean volunteered in the restaurant kitchen and later served with Anna Jane Glisson in the needlecrafts department. “She was nice to work with,” Jean remarked.

After the Risks’ two sons were born and entered school, Jean accompanied their classes to the fair. “It was fun when our boys were little,” she said. “Their teachers took them over to the fair, and I went (as a chaperone). Seeing them (enjoy the fair) made my day.” Dick became part of the crew that set up the fair, and as a member of Wakefield Lions Club, he spent hours serving food at the club’s booth. He also helped with trash cleanup. “The FFA boys would throw the trash bags onto my trailer, and we’d take them up to the trash bins,” Dick said. “Then it got to be too much trash, so we started taking a garbage truck around.” Dick’s professional life also intersected with the fair. As the owner of Risk Construction, Dick oversaw the construction of the Solanco Area Senior Center, which houses the needlecrafts exhibits during the fair. His company also moved bleachers from a school in northern Lebanon to the show barn. The school had been undergoing a renovation and needed to get rid of the bleachers, which were in good condition. At the same time, the fair board was building the show barn and needed seating. “(The bleachers) just came at the right time,” Dick marveled. Dick also served as a member of the board of directors for many years. “He helped to make decisions if they wanted to make changes from the year before,” Jean explained. The Risks remember being involved with three contests at the fair. Jean was a member of the Harvest Queen Court as a high school student, and Dick participated in the celebrity invitational milking contest. Once, Jean’s tomatoes won first place in a contest she did not enter. “I used to garden and take vegetables to Aunt Flo, who (lived nearby),” Jean related. “At the fair one year, I saw the (winning) tomatoes and thought, ‘I have better tomatoes than those.’” Then Jean saw the name on the ribbon – Flora Rae Jackson – and realized her aunt had entered the tomatoes on her behalf. Although age and health issues have limited how active the Risks are at the fair in recent years, the event is still a highlight for them. “I get to see people that I have not seen throughout the year,” Jean said. “I think (the fair is) all-around good. It keeps you up on community things.” “It’s a good visiting place,” Dick added. This year will be the first time Dick has appeared in the parade, but it will be Jean’s second. As a member of Farm Women 21, Jean was part of the group’s float many years ago. Like the grand marshals before them, the Risks humbly accepted the position of honor. “It was an honor (to be chosen), but we feel there were more deserving people than us,” Jean commented.

Farm Women And Friends Prepare Funnel Cakes, Elephant Ears By Dayna M. Reidenouer Joan Whiteside’s phone is busy in the months leading up to the Solanco Fair. As the shift scheduler for the funnel cake and elephant ear stand operated by Farm Women 15, Whiteside has a list of people she calls. Sometimes those people call her. “They want to help,” Whiteside said. Early in the group’s history, the list was fairly short and was occupied mainly by Farm Women. Now, however, the list includes at least 50 volunteers and just 14 Farm Women. “That tells you how much fun it is,” remarked volunteer Nancy Hastings. “I don’t think anyone comes and works who doesn’t enjoy it,” Whiteside added. “They each have the jobs they like.” The funnel cakes are popular among fairgoers, although elephant ears are increasing in popularity. For the uninitiated, funnel cakes have a texture similar to that of cake doughnuts, but they are made by drizzling a thin batter into hot oil. Once frizzled, the mounds of sweet rivels are sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar. Elephant ears are made by stretching a raised yeast dough into a flat disc that is fried and then coated with a cinnamon-sugar mixture. “I like the sugaring (process) and turning the elephant ears,” Hastings said. Although the lines to purchase the treats sometimes look intimidatingly long, they move quickly. Whiteside related that one year, a customer told her that the line stretched all the way out to the Buck. The hyperbole made her laugh. One memorable order took a little bit more time to fill than others. Whiteside recalled being skeptical when the stand received an order for several dozen funnel cakes and a large quantity of elephant ears. The order was legitimate, however, as the owner of a local restaurant had plans for the treats. Whiteside has her own plans regarding scheduling volunteers, which she successfully implemented when she took on the role. “I’ve designed it so there are breaks,” she said. “We didn’t always get breaks.” “It gets hot in there,” commented volunteer Diane Hastings. She expressed her appreciation for the change in scheduling, saying that the shifts are long enough to get into a groove but not so long as to wear anyone out. While Whiteside typically fills all the shifts before she makes it through her list of volunteers, she will gladly add more names.
Elephant ears dusted with cinnamon and sugar are one of the two sweet treats prepared fresh at the funnel cake stand operated by Farm Women 15. Both men and women are welcome to help, and mature youngsters may also assist. “My granddaughter used to stand on a stool (to work),” Whiteside said. “And now she’s taller than we are,” Diane added. New members are also welcome to join Farm Women. The organization was created in 1914 by a farm wife in Somerset County who wanted a women’s alternative to the men’s farm bureau. Farm Women 15 was formed in 1938 by Anna Schreiber of Kirkwood. The club meets monthly at members’ homes, and while farm living is not a requirement for membership, the meetings do feature speakers on a variety of agricultural topics. The chapter is also dedicated to philanthropy. The funds raised by the sale of funnel cakes and elephant ears are split between the Solanco Fair Association, local charities, and service organizations. To learn more or to volunteer, readers may call Whiteside at 717-786-1706.
