The Clerk of Orphans' Court and/or the Register of Wills within each individual county in Pennsylvania handles information, forms, and the actual registration of marriage license applications. Both individuals must appear in person together to complete and file the application for marriage. A Social Security number and a government-issued photo identification are required for both parties. The medical examination and blood test are no longer required. In Pennsylvania, if either party is under age 18, the consent of a parent or legal guardian is needed. Applicants who have been previously married must provide the following information concerning the dissolution of the most recent marriage: divorces - a certified copy of the decree is required (if maiden name has been resumed, that document must be presented); annulments - the same information as is required for divorces must be provided; and widowed - the date of death of the deceased spouse is needed. A marriage license becomes valid on the third day following application or the next business day if the third day falls on a weekend or holiday. The license is valid for 60 days from the third day following the date of application. The wedding ceremony need not be performed in the county in which the license was issued. However, an out-of-state marriage license cannot be used in Pennsylvania, nor can a Pennsylvania marriage license be used in another state. Throwing An Epic Theme Wedding Your Guests Won’t Soon Forget By Candace Engle • If you hope to be married May the Fourth, not because May is a good month to get married but because it is Star Wars Day… • If your “something blue” is related to Doctor Who’s Tardis… • If you plan to serve drinks named Polyjuice Potion, Felix Felicis, and Butterbeer during your cocktail hour… • If you refer to your engagement ring as “one ring to rule them all”… …then you might be planning the epic wedding of a superfan. For some quirky couples ready to take the leap into wedded bliss, no ordinary wedding will do. A quick Google search for Harry Potter weddings nets a number of incredible celebrations covered by major news or wedding entities (like Martha Stewart Weddings) within the last two years. These weddings were complete with Hogwarts-style venues, floating candles, guests in full costume, golden snitches, wands, and “Always” galore. Disney princesses and other characters inspire true devotion among their superfans; so much so that whole lines of gowns have been modeled after Ariel, Cinderella, Belle, Tiana, and other princesses. Not only can you look like a
princess on your wedding day, couples even have the option to get married at “The Happiest Place on Earth.” According to wdwnews.com, “Couples have traveled from every state in the U.S. and from international locations such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands to get married at Walt Disney World Resort.” In fact, the site notes that more than 50,000 couples have tied the knot at one of Disney’s affiliates (Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland, Aulani, and Disney Cruise Line) since 1991. A Pinterest scroll for “Game of Thrones”-inspired weddings covers every aspect of a wedding one can think of, from romantic hair and makeup to Westeros-worthy clothing, jewelry, and cufflinks to rustic décor, dragon-clad cakes, opulent centerpieces, and medieval table settings. Ideas for save-thedates, invitations, and wedding programs abound, and don’t forget the meat and mead. It is easy to see how a couple could transport their guests to the Seven Kingdoms with the right touches … with happier ever-afters, of course. Whether you “geek out” over comic books, “Lord of the Rings,” video games, or Hello Kitty, now is a great time to be a
fanboy or fangirl getting married. Theme weddings are rising in popularity, and vendors ready to provide the services and accessories can be found locally as well as at the touch of a keyboard. We were in touch with two Pennsylvania couples who recently celebrated their big day with some fantastic thematic elements that ranged from the subtle to the dramatic.

The Wedding Planner: What "theme" was your wedding? What made you choose this theme? Seth: If there was any overarching theme to our wedding, it was probably just "us," or "nerdy" things we like. Admittedly, we both can be very indecisive about things, so we were really having a hard time with picking a theme for our wedding. Eventually, we decided to take the advice of "making it our own" literally and just started incorporating lots of little details from things we liked. TWP: What kind of thematic details did you incorporate? Seth: Many of the details fell under the Batman/comic book category. Some

things may have been a little more subtle, such as the color scheme. Purple and lime green, in the Batman context, immediately brings to mind the Joker. Other details were a lot more obvious, such as comic book-style action bubbles (“Kiss” and “Smooch”) that were held over us during our ceremony, the Batman logo-shaped cake topper, and the Batman aprons we wore during the cake cutting. Other "nerdy" details outside of the comic spectrum were things like “Lord of the Rings” and Lego. We cut our cake with a sword (a replica of Sting from “Lord of the Rings”), and my wedding band actually has Elvish inscribed onto it similar to The One Ring. Legos made an appearance in helping our guests find their tables via little mini-figures holding flags with the guest's name and table number. Our officiant (Melinda Angstadt Celebrations of the Spirit) also joined in the fun and added a couple references to Batman and “Lord of the Rings” into the ceremony. TWP: Was the theme meaningful? How so? Seth: The theme was absolutely meaningful because it truly represented us. Once we settled on simply making the wedding our own, planning the look and feel of it became a lot easier and more fun. TWP: How did your guests react to the theme? Seth: We heard over and over again that our wedding had a unique feel to it and that it was exactly what people would've pictured our wedding to be like. TWP: Is there anything else you would like to share? Seth: To all the couples reading this who are unsure about a theme for your wedding, we can't recommend making it your own strongly enough. Pinterest is great and all, and it can be a great jumping-off point, but be sure to make your wedding about you. It is so much easier brainstorming ideas related to things you know and enjoy than it is trying to pull off someone else's vision, and in the end it's going to feel a lot more genuine to both you and your guests! We'd also be remiss without giving a shoutout to all of our amazing vendors. They were really the ones that took everything above and beyond what we could've imagined, and we cannot thank them enough!

The Wedding Planner: What "theme" was your wedding? What made you choose this theme? Lisa: If I could pin any specific theme on the wedding, it would probably be a general high fantasy sort of theme. Dragons, knights, fair maidens, that sort of thing. There were certainly some “Game of Thrones”/ “A Song of Ice and Fire” elements added in, as we're both massive fans. Since I was very young, I've always loved high fantasy. One of my favorite books as a child was a picture book version of “The Hobbit,” and that only grew as I got older. What better place to encompass that feeling than the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire? TWP: What kind of thematic details did you incorporate? Lisa: My shoes, which were handmade by UK-based Etsy seller The Elusive Rabbit, were ivory and gray lace peeptoe pumps topped with a red dragon's head and accented with dragon wings and a tail wrapped around the heel. The shoes perfectly matched our cake, which Rosie's Creative Cakes did an absolutely amazing job designing. The cake was a two-tier castle tower resting on top of a base of red sparkling dragon scales, and on top of the tower sat a curled-up red fondant dragon. We also added our cheeky little nod to “Game of Thrones” as we walked down the aisle to the infamous “The Rains of Castamere.” The Faire provided us with not only their harpist but also a cellist to make it particularly haunting and beautiful. After the ceremony, they played us out to the “Game of Thrones” theme. One of our groomsmen, a tattoo artist based in Temple, PA, also designed our own medieval-styled crest, which we had incorporated into our burned parchmentthemed invitations and placed onto our mint tin favors. In lieu of a traditional veil, I chose to wear a fascinator with a small bird cage veil that took an abstract sort of inspiration from the old-fashioned style of a queen's crown. I had a friend of mine design it for me, and she perfectly intermingled modern whimsical touches with the exact old-school look I was trying for.
different in general. Their wedding coordinator, Nicole, was a rockstar through all the planning process and made things so incredibly easy. The Faire also included full-day tickets for all of our guests as well as entertainment, which made it incredibly simple to make our entire high fantasy theme a very natural thing.

TWP: Was the theme meaningful? How so? Lisa: For me, it was realizing something I've loved since childhood. For the both of us, it was a way to express our personalities and make "our" day something that actually represented who we are as individuals. TWP: How did your guests react to the theme? Lisa: Our guests loved the theme and found the entire experience to be really just plain fun. In our invitations, we specified that attire with a medieval flair was encouraged, and I would say that more than half of our guests got into the spirit. From little touches like a flower crown or an accessory to a full rented themed costume, we wanted to let people have a good time with it and express themselves. I feel like our guests playing along played an absolutely pivotal role in the theme's success. TWP: Is there anything else you would like to share? Lisa: I could not recommend the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire enough for any couple thinking about doing something themed or just a little

wedding date: March 25, 2017 ceremony and reception location: The Inn at Reading, Wyomissing, PA a little help from their friends: Brittany and Zach have personal ties to many of the vendors who helped with their wedding. Alana Berry, who is the owner of Bow & Arrow Calligraphy and Design and designed their invitations, is the mutual friend who first introduced them in college. Additionally, the musician teaches with Zach; the disc jockey coached football with Zach; the son and daughter-in-law of the florist who created the corsages, boutonnieres, and rose arrangements work with Zach and are friends of the couple; the salon owner’s husband is one of Brittany’s co-workers; and Brittany and Zach also knew the vendor from whom they purchased the dried flowers used in centerpieces and other decorations, as well as the vendor from whom they purchased their beverage cozy favors. invitations: “Our invitations were extra special to me, because in addition to Alana’s design, my aunt attached unique pockets to the back of each invitation to hold the RSVP postcard,” Brittany says. “My aunt and I went through her 30-plus years of cardstock and unique papers to pick out the pocket patterns – different textures, colors, designs were used.” wedding colors: purple/lavender, yellow, and blue wedding theme: ballroom DIY the menu: homestyle meals featuring cornbread-stuffed chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and veggies cake: chocolate bride’s bouquet: Brittany thought of a special twist for her bouquet. “My bouquet was made of flowers given to me by my best girlfriends,” she explains. “I sent them a handmade card in the mail asking them to bring a flower. This way, they could be beside me during the ceremony. Some ladies asked me what I wanted, but I refused to say anything! I just told them that they know me and that I would enjoy anything – wooden, silk, real, fake. Whatever they chose! I was given two artificial flowers, lilies, bird of paradise, and roses, among other flowers. There was a good amount of orange, yellow, and purple – my favorite colors.” centerpieces: Each table had a slab of tree trunk cut by Zach’s dad with a dried flower display of either high or low height, a recycled wine bottle with a saying on it and the table number extending out of the top, and small soy candles that Brittany poured herself in second-hand or reused containers. The low tables had small white vases of yarrow and clear vases of lavender with river rocks; the high tables had one bigger vase with yarrow, lavender, eucalyptus, and blue globe thistle. special readings included in ceremony: a Native American wedding blessing, a Dr. Seuss quote called “We Are All a Little Weird,” and Shel Silverstein’s poem “Happy Endings” first dance song: “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young performed by Berks County musician Mike Noecker on guitar and vocals favor: personalized drink cozies something worth splurging on: “Music,” says Brittany, who explained that the disc jockey and live musician helped to make the event flow.

bride’s hometown: Havertown, PA groom’s hometown: Newville, PA current place of residence: Reading, PA bride’s occupation: environmental scientist groom’s occupation: engineering teacher how they met: Zach and Brittany had the same last name, so when Zach Potter transferred from Shippensburg University to Millersville University for his sophomore year of college, one of his friends from high school introduced him to her friend Brittany Potter, “because the Potters should meet!” proposal story: Zach proposed to Brittany alongside the Niagara Falls in Canada on their 10-year anniversary, after they had dinner in the Skylon Tower. Zach gave Brittany his maternal grandmother’s solitaire diamond ring, circa mid- to late-1940s. Niagara Falls already had special significance, as Brittany and Zach had taken a trip there when they first started dating. They also visited Niagara Falls to celebrate their first anniversary a year later. length of engagement: 16 months honeymoon destination: Camp Cabarita Eco Resort in Glenbrook, Jamaica, and Couples Swept Away Resort in Negril, Jamaica
The Wedding Planner: What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there? Brittany: We picked a general location. In our case, we ended up ruling out
having the wedding outdoors in Zach’s parents’ backyard, which was a bit to our surprise because I always thought we’d get married in their yard. We decided to have the wedding indoors in Reading somewhere. Once we did this, any time of year became an option, not just warmer months. Next we had to pick a date (in part because every venue was surprised we didn’t have a date picked), which kind of happened simultaneously with picking a venue. We kept bouncing around ideas and thoughts about any wedding topic/ aspect, but nothing actually started getting planned until we picked a date.

mention that I adore my grandmother. I didn’t even really need to decide; I just knew before we were even engaged that I’d wear her dress. A second dress made sense so I wouldn’t party in the antique dress and rip it or spill on it. I wore my great-grandmother’s diamond earrings and my mom’s bracelet. Zach picked his suit, purple tie, yellow socks, and pocket square. His cousin, who is a metal artist, crafted French cufflinks for him using a mold of his late sister’s ring as a way to memorialize her on our special day. His boutonniere was a pink rose in honor of his sister, Melissa, and there was a pink rose among all white roses in the flowers our sisters carried down the aisle, in honor of Melissa also. We let my sister and Ana, Zach’s sister whom his parents adopted from Guatemala, pick their dresses. TWP: What was your favorite design element of the wedding? Brittany: Our ceremony space and the Adirondack chair photo op with our
guests; my uncle made the chairs for us. We decorated our ceremony space with curtain lights and shepherd hooks with different items (dream catchers, lanterns, and candles). The aisle was shaped by battery-operated tea lights, and our guests gathering on the dance floor. My gram, whose dress I wore, was wheeled down the aisle, and everyone cheered for her! My cousin carried a lantern down the aisle and placed it on a hook. Our sisters carried antique pewter hurricane lamps with candlesticks in them, surrounded by roses, and then placed them on a table that was beside where Zach and I stood for the ceremony. When my dad and I walked in, everyone was cheering! It was a lot of fun and light-hearted. I couldn’t have imagined it any better. After the procession, the lights were picked up and everyone gathered closely around the riser we stood on. This was amazing and intimate, even though we had about 175 guests. We did not have an officiant; rather, we did the ceremony ourselves. It was similar to a Quaker wedding, but we are not Quaker so we did not overly emphasis this, but we did acknowledge that it is the Quaker heritage in Pennsylvania that made it legal for us the get married that way. Zach and I each needed one witness, but we had everyone sign a copy of our marriage certificate, which was blown up, matted, and placed on an easel for our guests to sign. TWP: How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding? Brittany: Because it was DIY, I think our personalities were all over the wed-
ding. Zach is a carpenter, and we used wood slices in the centerpieces. I love dried flowers, so I used them for all of the centerpieces and decorations. We are very conscious of recycling and not wasting, so all of the vases we used were from second-hand stores or family members; I poured all of the candles into recycled jars/containers. The decorated wine bottles incorporated into the centerpieces were also recycled. We also picked our wedding colors together. Lastly, I think it was really fun and special that we knew almost all of our vendors. TWP: What did you find to be the biggest challenge in planning a wedding? Brittany: Staying organized and focused! Also, agonizing over the details
because we did not purchase a package.
TWP: What is the most important piece of advice you have for other brides and grooms planning a wedding? Brittany: Work together and STAY POSITIVE. Do not discuss too much at one
sitting or force discussions. Zach and I decided that either of us could say we were “full up” or saturated with the wedding talk in any given night of discussions. (Usually he reached saturation before I did!) Also, remember the end goal and that it is about the two of you, not what others want.

bride’s hometown: Washington Township, NJ groom’s hometown: Washington Township, NJ current place of residence: Gaithersburg, MD bride’s occupation: lieutenant in United States Navy (nurse) groom’s occupation: electrical engineer how they met: Jaimie and Jim knew each other through mutual friends in high school and college and often hung out in the same group, but never talked much. After graduating from college, they both went to a concert featuring The Black Keys with mutual friends and ended up talking all night. The next day, they both asked a mutual friend about each other. Jim got Jaimie’s phone number and asked her out to dinner - the rest is history! proposal story: Jim told Jaimie to take the weekend off for a “surprise getaway” and took her to Asheville, North Carolina, to the Biltmore Estate. After a day of horseback riding and touring the property, they hiked up a small hill to a bench overlooking the Biltmore Mansion, where Jim popped the question. length of engagement: a year and a half honeymoon destination: Reykjavik, Iceland
The Wedding Planner: What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there? Jaimie and Jim: We first sought out venues. Jaimie’s
love for horses always made her want to be married on a farm and have the horse-and-carriage fairytale wedding. Being a good husband-to-be, Jim wanted to do whatever would make her happy! We knew that once we found the venue, everything else would fall into place around that.

TWP: How did you select the bride’s dress, the groom’s attire, and the outfits of the members of the wedding party? Jaimie: For my dress, I knew that I wanted something

26
simple, yet elegant – that’s always been my style. My mom flew out to visit, and just the two of us went dress shopping. I wanted it to be a special moment between us. I had picked out several dresses online to try on, but once we got to the boutique, the saleswoman brought out the dress I ultimately chose. I didn’t need to try on any others after that! We picked the color scheme after Pinterest-ing and decided on plum and gray with burnt orange accents. I wanted my bridesmaids to have some freedom with their dresses to allow them to feel confident. With bridesmaids scattered throughout the country, they weren’t all able to get together to try on dresses at the same time. Weddington Way made it possible to order dresses online and also offered different styles for them to choose from. All of the girls were happy with the process and the ability to be unique and wear something they really loved. The guys were easy; once we chose gray as the suit color, they simply showed up at Men’s Wearhouse and let the staff show them the options. Jim was able to show off his personality with fun purple socks and a pocket square.
TWP: How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding? Jaimie and Jim: With every decision, whoever was
“researching” it would find several options that they liked. We would then discuss the options with each other and make a mutual decision. We have very similar tastes, so it wasn’t very hard to compromise!
TWP: What did you find to be the biggest challenge in planning a wedding? Jaimie and Jim: The biggest challenge was probably
feeling like we had to please everyone (parents, other members of the bridal party, etc.) when it came to decisions surrounding the wedding. But, at the end of the day, we always came back to the fact that it was OUR wedding and should be a reflection of us.
TWP: What is the most important piece of advice you have for other brides and grooms planning a wedding? Jaimie and Jim: Create a timeline for planning and
stick to it! Having all of the big things out of the way early will allow you time to take care of the million little things that will pop up toward the end that you never would have thought about.

bride’s hometown: Brooklyn, NY groom’s hometown: Media, PA current place of residence: Brooklyn, NY bride’s occupation: middle school technology integrator groom’s occupation: high school guidance counselor how they met: The couple met while teaching in Brooklyn. Meena was an art teacher, and Josh taught high school teenagers in special education. Josh flirted with her for a full year without receiving much of a response. Finally, he got his friends to convince Meena to go out one night in Alphabet City, and he joked his way into her heart. proposal story: Josh surprised Meena with a proposal in a park in San Francisco. The couple was on a West Coast road trip for two weeks, and Josh popped the question on the first night of the trip. It was a complete surprise until Meena noticed that Josh was having a hard time breathing and was acting strangely, and she realized what was about to happen. At that very moment, a photographer Josh had hired popped out of the bushes and captured the moment. length of engagement: almost two years honeymoon destination: “Josh and I are lucky to enjoy our summers off together as educators,” Meena remarks. “We enjoyed six weeks of adventure, romance, and sweaty heat in Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.”
The Wedding Planner: What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there? Meena: The first thing we did was to find venues. We knew our wed-

ding was most likely going to be outside New York City. We looked for a venue that that had an open feel and included a lot of green space, something we knew we wouldn't be able to find in NYC. Josh was totally a “groomzilla” when we began wedding planning. He did hours of research on venues and wanted to talk about it often. Little did I know how helpful that was going to be. (Thank you, Josh!) He made a spreadsheet with the maximum number of guests we could have at each venue, the number of hours at the venue included in the rental, and a list of items that were included at each venue (because tables and chairs were not always included in the rental). I poked fun at Josh for being SO into the planning; meanwhile, I was clueless where to begin. I am so glad we got a head start on the venue search because of him.

TWP: How did you select your dresses and the outfits of the members of the wedding party? Meena: I loved picking out my dresses; I had two outfit changes.
Traditionally, Indian wedding ceremonies and the reception are not held on the same day, but we decided we wanted all wedding festivities on the same day, which meant we both had to change for the reception. We both knew we wanted to have fun with our outfits and we didn’t want the “traditional” look. I knew I did not want to adhere to the traditional pure red outfit for the ceremony. Instead, I looked for an outfit that included a lot of pink, which is my favorite color, and had a regal, elegant, and sophisticated feel. As soon as I tried on my outfit, I knew it was the one. I purchased my ceremony outfit first and then looked for my white reception dress about five months before our wedding date. I went to RK Bridal in New York City and loved my experience there. I went by myself for the first appointment and tried on a few gowns. I fell in love with the first wedding dress I tried on! That same day, I tried on several other dresses with different shapes and cuts and took photos of my favorite ones and texted them to my friends. They were eager to see the dresses in person, so a few weeks later, I asked them to come with me to choose the dress. Everyone had a different opinion of what they liked on me. In the end, I was glad I chose what I liked. I knew immediately that the dress complemented my petite figure and was elegant, and – most of all – the train wouldn’t get in the way of me dancing. Josh and I are super laid back, so we asked our closest friends to choose outfits they would feel comfortable in and would flatter them. The groomsmen wore handsome suits, and the bridesmaids wore beautiful, flattering dresses they could dance in all night. Josh and I loved the outfits we chose. They were very flattering, and we have received so many compliments. TWP: How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding? Meena: Since we had a long engagement, we had ample time to put a
lot of thought into different aspects of the wedding. We used our strengths to make large decisions about decor, food, and design. I used my creative art background to design the mandap (pergola) for the ceremony. Josh was in charge of choosing the food, beverages, and desserts.
TWP: What did you find to be the biggest challenge in planning a wedding? Meena: The biggest challenge as a couple was creating a wedding that
was our vision. It was challenging to respond to questions from family about why we weren’t adhering to “traditional” wedding expectations.
TWP: What is the most important piece of advice you have for other brides and grooms planning a wedding? Meena: Consider the importance of all the decisions you make. Don’t
sweat the small stuff.

We felt so at home, and the venue really made the wedding. Guests are still commenting about how beautiful it was on the Homestead.”

bride’s hometown: Sinking Spring, PA groom’s hometown: Roulette, PA current place of residence: Conshohocken, PA bride’s occupation: accountant groom’s occupation: social media specialist proposal story: While visiting his family in picturesque Potter County, PA, Jerry took Nina for a little hike on a hill nearby. “At the top of the hill was a gorgeous view of mountains covered in fall foliage, so we decided to set his camera on the tripod and take a couple self-timer photos,” Nina recalls. “After about two photos, I looked over and he was on his knee! I was so caught off guard ... and it was all caught on film.” length of engagement: one and a half years honeymoon destination: Iceland and the Amalfi Coast of Italy
The Wedding Planner: What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there? Nina: Besides estimating the guest count, shopping for
venues was first! We felt that everything else - decor, theme, vibe, etc. - would mold around that.
TWP: How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding? Nina: We both just love being outdoors, so we were thrilled
theweddingplanneronline.com
to find a venue with a lot of outdoor space and also beautiful indoor space. It allowed us to incorporate a little bit of what we each wanted. For me: elements of nature and home - a mix of bright and pastel flowers, comfort food, and photos of the family. For Jerry: outdoor activities such as cornhole and a fire pit with s'mores.
TWP: What did you find to be the biggest challenge in planning a wedding? Nina: Working with your budget. TWP: What is the most important piece of advice you have for other brides and grooms planning a wedding? Nina: It's probably been said a million times, but just have
fun and try not to stress too much! Focus on the few things that are truly important to you and don't sweat the small stuff. I kept on reminding myself that the guests at our wedding are our closest friends and family ... if something didn't go perfectly right or if it didn't look like photos out of a high-end wedding magazine, they would not judge us (if they even noticed). What matters the most to everybody who matters is having fun celebrating love.

The Wedding Planner: What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there? Sierra: The first thing we did was pick the venue,
which was probably the most fun part. The venue we had was beautiful, and it was the first one we looked at. I was inspired to do this first because it was our biggest expense and it was getting booked very quickly.
TWP: How did you select the bride’s dress, the groom’s attire, and the outfits of the members of the wedding party? Sierra: I really did not have any idea as to what I
theweddingplanneronline.com
wanted my dress to look like, but one night while driving home from work, I saw my dress in the window of a local dress shop and knew right away that was the dress for me. I called the next morning and bought it. Pinterest helped me a lot with picking out the groom’s attire, and I pretty much let it up to my husband-to-be to choose. After he chose what he liked, we could decide on the bridal party. For the bridesmaids’ dresses, each girl bought her own dress at the store of her choice.
TWP: What is the most important piece of advice you have for other brides and grooms planning a wedding? Sierra: Enjoy each moment of the wedding planning
process, because it will fly by.

We asked professionals in the wedding cake industry to tell us about one of their favorite wedding cakes ever.
Bobbie Jo Grove, bakery manager at Yoder’s Country Market, said this three-tier marble cake stood out in her memory. “Serving about 100 guests and decorated with our homemade white cake icing, this cake is very simple and modern, yet very elegant at the same time,” explained Bobbie Jo, who noted that this style of cake can be customized for each couple by adding different flowers to give it a distinctive look. Bobbie Jo noted that other cake flavors available at Yoder’s include white, yellow, red velvet swirl, spice, black walnut, lemon, raspberry, and strawberry. She added that cakes can be customized further, saying, “Why have just a plain cake when you can add a mousse filling or fruit filling and make your cake the talk of the town?” Yoder’s Country Market 14 S. Choosing A Gown With Many brides-to-be visit bridal shops with specific goals in mind regarding the style of their wedding gowns. Some women arrive equipped with magazine tear-outs or pull up ideas on their mobile phones. Others may have an entire scrapbook filled with various ideas they've been compiling for years. Obviously, much consideration is given to wedding gowns. The cost and silhouette of the dress may garner the bulk of that consideration, but brides might want to spend more time considering comfort. Depending on the time of day the wedding takes place, a bride can spend 12 hours or more in her
wedding gown on her wedding day. However, when shopping for their gowns, brides may prioritize beauty over comfort, even though it's entirely possible to find a gown that's both stunning and comfortable. When staff and friends or family who have come along to offer advice start to gush over wedding gowns, brides-to-be may feel pressured to downplay any discomfort they feel. To make sure brides look flawless and elegant but are still comfortable in their wedding gowns, they should consider the following tips: · Know what to highlight. Brides should try on gowns that play up their best features. If a bride has shapely
legs, she may want to consider a dramatic gown with a slit to show them off. Certain gowns can enhance the décolleté or show off an hourglass shape. Remember, many gowns can be modified so that brides feel secure and confident. Sleeves can be added or fabric placed to cover up any perceived flaws. Confidence and pride are important parts of the comfort factor. · Get sized correctly. Bridal gown sizes do not coincide with regular clothing sizes. Depending on the manufacturer, brides may have to select gowns that are several sizes larger than they would normally wear. This should not be a cause for alarm. Brides should go by their measurements. Attempting

Seamstresses and tailors are sometimes the unsung heroes of weddings. These individuals often work tirelessly under pressure to ensure that tuxes are taken in at the right places and that gowns are hemmed to perfection. Wedding ensemble alterations done by someone who’s skilled with a needle and thread are essential to looking fabulous on the big day. Proper fit can be as important as the gown or suit. Few, if any, wedding ensembles can be purchased right off the rack and worn without custom tailoring. The scope of the alterations will depend on the desired changes and how well the clothing initially fits. Timing is crucial, and the following guidelines can facilitate the process of wedding alterations: Length of time - It's difficult to say how long alterations will take, as it depends on the extent of the work and the seamstress’s or tailor’s workload. Until the alterations have begun, seamstresses and tailors may not know how long the job will take. The bridal resource The Knot advises allowing between two and three months from the first fitting to the last. For complicated gowns, brides or bridal party members may need three or four fittings, with the last occurring a few weeks before the wedding. Alteration costs - Cost alone should not dictate where to go for alterations. The costs can include many factors, including which fabrics are used in the gown or suit, the extent of the alterations requested, proximity to the wedding date, and even geographical location. Brides also can add straps, beading, lace, or other detailing, but these additions will affect the cost. Whom to choose - Many bridal salons and formalwear retailers will have someone on staff who can handle alterations. Couples can also take clothing to a professional who specializes in wedding wear. Gowns can be complex, with some featuring bustles, intricate hems, boning, beading, and much more, so brides should try to work with experienced professionals. Couples can ask friends and family for recommendations or find out if wedding planners or retailers have recommendations. When attending a fitting, brides and grooms should bring along the shoes and undergarments that will be worn on the wedding day so the fit can be matched accordingly. Also, brides can take one friend or family member who can offer an extra opinion on how the clothing falls and fits.

Say “Sew Long” To Ill-Fitting Wedding Attire
While some couples may get cold feet on their wedding days, there's no reason for anyone - including brides who don high heels - to endure foot pain. Foot pain is a common complaint for those unaccustomed to wearing stilettos or formal footwear. Wedding attire is not worn every day, so it is no surprise that wedding footwear may contribute to some aches and pains. Podiatrists suggest that heels between one and two inches in height are the best to maintain foot health. But that heel size does not work for all brides. Brides-tobe, bridesmaids, and others can employ these tips to keep their feet pain-free throughout the ceremony and reception: · Give your feet a break. Swap out a higher heel with a lower one every few hours. Individuals should not wait until they start feeling pain to switch to a lower heel or more comfortable shoe.
· Choose shoes that fit and leave a little room. Standing and dancing can
cause feet to swell, sometimes by as much as one half-size. Wedding party members should make sure the shoes they plan to wear to the wedding afford potentially swollen feet a little breathing room. · Slip in a pair of insoles. Stores carry a variety of insoles that can add cushioning, distribute weight, and prevent rubbing or chafing of the feet. · Break in the shoes. Individuals should purchase wedding shoes several weeks in advance of the event and wear them around the house with a pair of socks to stretch out straps and enable the shoes to mold to the wearer’s foot shape. Wearing them in advance also helps identify spots that rub or are likely to cause blisters. · Consider wearing stockings. It's now less of a fashion faux pas to attend formal events with bare legs than it once was, but it may be in the individual’s best interest to wear a pair of stockings on the big day. The thin material will help alleviate rubbing and hot spots from direct skin-on-shoe contact.
to squeeze into a dress that is too small will only lead to discomfort on the wedding day.
· Purchase the right undergarments. Improperly fitting bras, shapewear, and other undergarments can lead to discomfort as well. Some seamstresses can sew in supportive cups to remove the need for a separate bra. Brides can explore various options to reduce the visibility of certain accoutrements.
· Move around in the gown.
Brides should not just stand in front of the mirror and smile when trying on gowns. They should put the dress to the test. Brides should try sitting, bending, and even a little dancing to make sure the dress is comfortable to move around in. · Try different options. The gown that brides have in mind may not be the one they ultimately go home with. Explore different styles and materials. Choose cooler, breezier fabrics and lightweight gowns, like crêpe, georgette, or organza, for summer weddings. Heavier fabrics, such as brocade, may be more comfortable in the winter.

· Stretch and soak feet prior and afterward. Wearing heels can put strain
on calf muscles, creating extra pain. Individuals should stretch their feet and legs whenever possible. After a long night, brides and grooms can make sure a pedicure is one of the first spa experiences they enjoy on their honeymoon.

Chicago, Illinois: The Windy City is home to impressive architecture, including the second-tallest building in the U.S., the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower). Newlyweds will find luxurious lodging along the Magnificent Mile in downtown Chi-town, which is also home to several upscale shopping destinations and Michelin star restaurants. Nearby attractions include Millennium Park, home of the famous Cloud Gate sculpture and other notable monuments; the Museum of Contemporary Art, showcasing a variety of post-World War II pieces; and the Chicago Theater, an instantly recognizable landmark entertainment venue. In the northern end of town, couples can catch a ball game at historic Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, or take in an improv comedy show at The Second City, known for honing the talents of comedy legends including Bill Murray, Tina Fey, and John Belushi. A romantic evening stroll along the Riverwalk will provide lovebirds with breathtaking views of the city lights, plus ample dining options with gorgeous river and skyline views.
Baltimore, Maryland: This waterfront metropolis earned the nickname Charm City for many reasons, and newlyweds will discover quite a few when they book a luxury room with a view of Inner Harbor. The harbor itself is a bustling hotspot, offering shopping and dining possibilities, as well as must-see attractions like tours of the historic USS Constellation (a battleship built in the late 1700s) and the USS Torsk (a World War II-era submarine) and, of course, the National Aquarium, home to stateof-the-art marine life exhibits, a dolphin show, a shark tank, and a walk-through rainforest. Couples can head downtown for a show at the Hippodrome Theatre, a restored former vaudeville venue; explore the unique history of pop culture at the one-of-a-kind Geppi’s Entertainment Museum; or take in the sights and sounds of Lexington Market (a massive indoor market established in 1782) while picking up some famous Maryland seafood. Restaurants like the highly acclaimed Charleston and farmto-table experts Woodberry Kitchen offer delectable and varied dining options, too.
San Francisco, California: Welcomed by the stunning Golden Gate Bridge, honeymooners will find an enchanting and laid-back vibe in what was once nicknamed “the Paris of the West.” Plenty of hotel accommodations are just a short distance away from hotspots like Pier 39, where couples can spend an afternoon enjoying bay breezes, shopping, and picturesque dining by the seaside. A daring drive along the eight hairpin turns of the infamous Lombard Street in the Russian Hill neighborhood can lead couples to Ghirardelli Square, a historic chocolate factory-turned-shopping hub, and then on to the famous Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood for a cable car ride and a visit to the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.

Austin, Texas: While Austin is known primarily as the capital city of Texas, the evolving metropolis has also become a hub for live music and exciting nightlife. Honeymooners can choose from a variety of luxury hotels that cater to newlyweds and are located in the center of the downtown action. The best live entertainment, along with unique gourmet eateries, can be found along Sixth Street, which is known as the nightlife epicenter of the city. Venturing out of the downtown area, couples can stroll along the boardwalk on Lady Bird Lake, taking in the beauty of the Colorado River, which runs through Austin. Zilker Metropolitan Park is home to the Zilker Botanical Garden, which features 26 acres full of stunning flora and fauna, including waterfalls, peaceful streams, and ponds full of fish. Lovebirds shouldn’t miss a walk across the Congress Avenue Bridge or a live show at one of many historic venues, such as the Paramount Theatre, located just blocks from the state capitol complex, or Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater, home to the longest-running American music television series.
New York City, New York: There is no other city on earth like the Big Apple, and couples looking for the quintessential big city honeymoon can look to the City That Never Sleeps to fulfill every romantic ideal. Besides premier luxury accommodations, dining opportunities at numerous worldfamous restaurants, and shopping at the crème de la crème of designer boutiques, couples can also discover the more nuanced qualities of Manhattan’s distinct neighborhoods. Lovebirds can stroll through Greenwich Village and enjoy the Bohemian vibe, rub shoulders with high society types in the Upper East Side, or visit a few of the more than 200 art galleries in the creative and diverse Chelsea neighborhood. Add the requisite activities like taking in a show on Broadway, a visit to the Statue of Liberty, and a stop in Times Square, and newlyweds can enjoy an action-packed adventure in the “city so nice, they named it twice.”

Barcelona, Spain: Art and architecture await newlyweds in the city known as the cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region. Couples can book a room overlooking the Mediterranean Sea or opt for a downtown hotel with views of the city. After a stroll through Las Ramblas, a bustling outdoor market, couples should be sure to drink from the Font de Canaletes fountain, which, as the legend goes, ensures visitors will one day return to Barcelona. Lovebirds can visit the Museu Picasso and marvel at the vast collection of the master painter’s works, visit one of several 13th- or 14th-century churches, or tour the city in search of architectural wonders designed by genius architect Antoni Gaudí, the mastermind behind the magnificent Sagrada Familia cathedral located in the heart of Barcelona. Add the finest in gourmet Spanish cuisine, miles of beaches, and an action-packed visit to the FC Barcelona soccer stadium, and honeymooners will experience a Spanish holiday to remember.
Copenhagen, Denmark: The southernmost sovereign nation in Scandinavia, Denmark is an archipelago, and its capital city of Copenhagen is known as one of the oldest cities in the world and also as the city with the happiest residents. Newlyweds will be treated to beautiful waterfront views, quaint narrow streets, and an overall laid-back atmosphere. Couples can enjoy a bite to eat at an outdoor café in Nyhavn, the port neighborhood full of music, classy restaurants, and colorful, historic houses, including the former home of Hans Christian Andersen. Rosenborg Castle, located in the heart of Copenhagen, will take couples on a journey into the royal history of Denmark, with opportunities to view the crown jewels, coronation thrones, and artifacts related to the monarchy, which has been in existence for more than 1,000 years. Another must-see attraction for all newlyweds with a penchant for romance is the bronze sculpture of the Little Mermaid, which sits at Langelinie Pier gazing at the city where her true love waits. The statue, a gift to Copenhagen in 1913, remains one of the city’s most popular attractions.

We know that sometimes opposites attract when it comes to romantic relationships. Brides and grooms planning their wedding décor should note that the “opposites attract” adage can be applied in the spectrum of colors, as well. You may remember learning at some point in school about the color wheel, which is a visual representation of the progression of the colors in the color spectrum. But who knew that thinking back to the days of elementary school art class could help with planning an aesthetically pleasing wedding celebration? Colors found on opposite sides of the wheel are known as complementary colors. These combos – red and green, yellow and purple, and blue and orange – are known to couple well together, and you can enlist one of these classic pairings when selecting a color palette for the decorations, wedding party attire, and other elements of your big day. These tried-and-true “opposites” are a recipe for wedding beauty.

Red & Green When most people think of the color combination of red and green, they probably think of Christmas. And it’s true that the duo does provide a classic color scheme for a wedding during the holiday season, highlighting the colors of evergreen trees and holly berries. But red and green can be used in wedding dÊcor at other times of the year too. In the summer months, the color combination evokes a field of brilliant red poppies amidst fresh green grass. And in the fall, darker shades of the hues suggest the deep reds and greens found on a walk through the woods.
Yellow & Purple The complementary hues of yellow and purple make for a versatile color palette that can provide a burst of color at a wedding taking place at any time of the year. From the pastel yellows and lavenders of springtime to the bolder goldenrods and regal purples of summer, the two colors are quintessential hues found in blooms throughout the year. Mustard and deep grape pair well in the autumn, and what better way to liven up the darker days of winter than with some sunshine yellow and orchid?
Blue& Orange Orange might seem like a bold choice for a wedding, but pairing it with blue makes for a fun, fresh combination for attire, flowers, decorations, and even food. The calm and flattering nature of blue hues can take the edge off the brightness of orange, while an accent of vibrant tangerine will pop against a setting of tranquil blue. In fact, the two colors are often found in some of nature’s loveliest displays – from the blues of the sky fading into the deep orange of a sunset to the midday summer sky behind a bright orange marigold or an orange fall leaf floating down a babbling stream. Since the color combination works so well in nature, it stands to reason that it also offers attractive options for a wedding too.

e h t g n i t c sele rfect site pe O nce a couple becomes engaged and shares the good news with friends and families, the next step is to begin planning the wedding. While couples must make myriad decisions during the wedding planning process, perhaps none is more significant than where to tie the knot. The Knot 2016 Real Weddings Study found that couples spent an average of $16,107 on their wedding venues in 2016. That figure easily dwarfs the next biggest expense ($6,163 for the engagement ring). Because the wedding venue accounts for such a large portion of the budget, couples should give ample
consideration to a host of factors before choosing where to get married.
Size - Until they can agree on a guest list, couples might want to delay looking for venues. On the other hand, some couples might want to first look at some venues so they can determine just how many guests they can afford to invite. Whether they're hosting small celebrations or large parties, couples
should choose venues that can comfortably accommodate all of their guests. If possible, couples may want to look for venues with multiple reception areas, which might allow for some wiggle room if the guest list grows or dwindles during the planning process.
Availability - Some couples might have an ideal time of year they hope to get married. Some may even know the exact date. While that can help with the

Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big day. Many wedding venues require couples to carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries, or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility, or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen, or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal gowns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

Financials - It's easy for couples to be focused on the bottom line when choosing wedding venues, but it's also important that they get a complete grasp of the financials before choosing a wedding venue. Ask about the amount of the initial deposit and if that deposit is refundable. In addition, ask when the deposit is due and when each subsequent payment is due until the balance is paid in full. This research can make budgeting easier and planning less stressful.

In addition, ask if the venue requires couples to have their own wedding liability insurance for protection in the event of injury, property damage, or incidents related to alcohol. Couples may also want to make the investment in cancellation/postponement insurance, and some venues may even require it.

your guest list Cooperation is key for couples planning their weddings. Compiling the guest list is one area of wedding planning where couples must often embrace both cooperation and compromise. Putting together a wedding guest list can cause some tension. That tension may be confined to couples, but it may even occur between couples and their families. Finalizing guest lists may be one of the more difficult tasks couples encounter when planning their weddings, but there are ways to make creating the list go smoothly.

the need to compromise in advance of compiling their guest lists may find it easier to pare down that list if the initial number of guests is too high. Couples can create lists of people they want to invite, breaking these initial lists into categories such as friends, family, acquaintances, and co-workers. Couples may not want to compromise on inviting friends and family, but each person should be willing to remove some co-workers and acquaintances from their final lists.
· Don't succumb to parental pressure if Mom and Dad are not paying the bills. Couples that
are financing their own weddings should not feel beholden to their parents' wishes when compiling their wedding guest lists. Couples can politely explain to parents that they are working on a budget, and only a predetermined number of guests will be invited. Couples can appease their parents by encouraging them to compile a list of people they hope to invite and then

The charger just might come in handy on the big day too, when snapshots and selfies are in full-swing at the reception. Wristlet – A fashionable but functional wristlet
wallet is perfect for stowing makeup, cash, a cellphone, and any other small items that need to be kept close. The wrist strap allows for hands-free maneuvering, as well. Go for personalization too! This item will come in handy on the big day and can also be something your special ladies can put to use for years to come. Beverage Container – A travel mug, iced coffee sipper, or sporty water bottle makes a great gift, and - better yet brides can fill the container with extra items like gift cards, candy, lip gloss, a fancy pen, or any other tiny gifts that fit the personalities of their bridesmaids. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.
Middle-ofthe-Road Personalized
Jewelry – A bracelet or delicate necklace featuring your bridesmaid’s initials, an engraved date or special sentiment, or a charm that fits her personality perfectly is a wonderful gift that each of your girls will wear proudly again and again. Personalized Spa Robe – Find the softest, plushest spa robe and have it customized with each bridesmaid’s initials. Add some bath and body products, and your best gals will have all they need to relax after the big day.
Top-Notch! Spa Day – If you really want to thank your bridesmaids, book a spa day after the wedding. Let them pamper themselves and recover from the wedding day whirlwind with a facial, mani/pedi, and massage. Designer Anything – Treat your girls like celebrities with a swag bag full of designer items like top-shelf perfume, major label beauty products, elite accessory brands, and the latest trendy fashion items. A Kitten or a Puppy – Does this one even need an explanation?! Best. Gift. Ever. Period. (But definitely ask your bridesmaids first; you don’t want any of the pets getting dropped off at the animal shelter…)
For the Guys Inexpensive
Middle-ofthe-Road
A Watch – It’s practical and fashionable and can be engraved to add a personal touch that will mark the occasion
Go Big or Go Home
Tickets to a Sporting Event Surprise your friends with tickets to a big game and send along some cash for food and beverages while they enjoy the action under the stadium lights. If that is a little out of reach financially, treat your buddies to a night out at a pub or sports bar and help them unwind a bit after the big day.
Gadgets - Tech-savvy groomsmen will love to receive the latest and greatest gear, such as a hand-held gaming system or an electronic tablet. Go a step further and give your guys a personalized MP3 player with a special playlist uploaded and ready to bring back cherished memories. A Kitten or a Puppy – Hey, if the bridesmaids get puppies and kitties, don’t leave out the groomsmen! Everybody loves puppies and kitties!
The Wedding Planner
Beverage Container – Just like the bridesmaid gift, only tailored to a man’s taste. Consider an engraved beer mug or other piece of sophisticated barware or a water bottle featuring your buddy’s favorite sports team. The options are endless, and don’t forget to fill it with a gift card to his favorite store, some mints, and other small items. Personalized Swag – A handy pocketknife, bottle opener, money clip, beverage decanter – these are all useful items for any man’s accessory collection. The personalization adds that special touch and makes the item a great keepsake from a memorable event.
properly. Find something to match your friends’ personalities, like a hipster pocket watch, an ecofriendly bamboo model, or a logoemblazoned sports watch for the die-hard fan. Duffel Bag – Even if your buddies aren’t into spending hours at the gym, a quality duffel bag is a useful item for guys on the go. Have it personalized or find one with a favorite sports team logo. Go the extra mile and fill the bag with trendy patterned socks, gift cards, a necktie, cologne, and more.
Great gift options abound, but you can also consider making a donation to the favorite nonprofit organization of each of your attendants. They will love to know that the kindness they showed you has been paid forward to a cause that is close to their heart.

Food Makes
The Mood Food is often one of the highlights of a wedding reception. Couples researching potential reception sites for their parties should be sure to schedule tastings and confirm how the foods will look upon being served. In addition to the taste of the food, couples may want to consider which menu items are offered - particularly those that align with the latest trends in wedding reception catering. Some popular food trends include:
· Food stations: Food stations encourage interaction between a chef/server and the guests. Food stations may include a ceviche bar, fondue cart, quesadilla maker, or custom sliders station. · Colorful foods: Guests may be tempted by the appearance of foods, and bold colors can set dishes apart. · Brunch items: Recognizing that daytime weddings can be much less expensive than evening affairs, couples opting for a ceremony earlier in the day may want to have a brunch-themed wedding reception, featuring omelets, pancakes, French toast, and other tasty breakfast foods. · Fancier "ordinary" fare: Although chicken fingers and meatballs aren't normally given gourmet status, they can be dressed up and repackaged for weddings. Whole-grain breadings, Asian dipping sauces, and gourmet ingredients such as Kobe beef give common foods some flair. · Family feel: Some weddings are now served "family style," with guests sharing from larger passed plates. This method serves to connect everyone at the table and encourages conversation, helping to establish a warm atmosphere. · Food trucks: Trendy couples can treat guests to another special component. Takeout-style food trucks can offer hors d’oeuvres or other parts of the meal.
