Warming Little Ones For 20 Years Lititz Library Mitten Tree Tradition Continues BY ANN MEAD ASH
Beginning on Nov. 16, the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, offered a place for area citizens to donate new masks, mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, earmuffs, and umbrellas for local children. Decorating the Mitten Tree has been a tradition at the library for about 20 years. It was begun as a Library System of Lancaster County project.
Kiwanis Club of Lititz members Karen Davis (left) and Melissa Warner taste test the wine, cheese, and chocolate that will be paired in a special fundraiser to be held in a virtual format by the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area on Jan. 28.

Lititz Kiwanis Club Adds New Event
nown for its Chocolate Walk, members of the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area decided to get a little creative with a fundraiser for the new year. In 2020, the Chocolate Walk, which is traditionally held the Saturday prior to Columbus Day, was streamlined to become a Chocolate Express, a onestop, drive-through to pick up sweet treats. For 2021, club members have devised a flavorful event that is designed to be safe. A Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Tasting Party will be held via Zoom on Thursday, Jan. 28, with a choice to attend a 4, 5:30, or 7 p.m. event. Each Zoom engagement will include commentary about pairings. Those wishing to attend will pick up their party bag at a specified location in Lititz, or it can be delivered to the individual’s home within a 15-mile
Express was completed in the fall before getting to work. Proceeds from the local Kiwanis Club’s events traditionally benefit various local organizations, with special attention to those that support children. Davis noted that Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic and Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, both of which serve children with medical and developmental needs, are particularly in need of funds. “They will receive proceeds (from the tasting party),” said Davis. Other organizations that have received checks from past fundraisers include Lititz Public Library, Manheim Township Public Library, and Manheim Township High School Key Club and Mini-THON. Tickets for the event may be purchased at www.lititzchocolate walk.com. Readers who have questions may call 717-575-5967.
Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast To Be Held Virtually Previous years’ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfasts have attracted more than 700 community leaders who gathered in one place to honor King’s legacy through performances, community awards, and a keynote speech. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, when attendees gather, they will do so virtually. The 33rd annual event will be held Monday, Jan. 18, from 9 to 10 a.m. in a livestreamed format.

radius of downtown Lititz for an extra cost. Each party bag will contain three small bottles of wine – one from Australia, one from Italy, and one from California. Along with the wine will be tastes of cheeses and chocolate truffles. Club members sampled the items that were chosen to be included in the bag. “Someone has to do it,” noted Karen Davis, one of the organizers of the event. Davis shared that commentary on the pairings will be based on extensive research of information from the winemakers of the three varieties that will be included in the bag. “I got the idea (for this event) from watching a video from a Kiwanis Club in California,” explained Davis, who shared the concept with another club member. The pair mulled the idea over, waiting until the Chocolate

Diane Guscott, community relations and development coordinator, with the Lititz Public Library, said that at one time, the library system handled distributing the items the libraries collected, but the overwhelming response eventually became too much for the system. Lititz chose to continue the program. This year, the Lititz Public Library was closed to in-person service due to COVID-19 restrictions, so staff collected items in the community room rather than have visitors decorate a tree. Megan Sillers is the liaison between the library and Thrive to 5 which receives the donations. “The Lititz Library has been giving our program, which is currently called Thrive to 5 but was formerly called

Lancaster Head Start, the donations on the Mitten Tree for over five years,” said Sillers. She explained that Thrive to 5/Head Start shares the donations with the classrooms in the Lititz area first. “Once we are sure that all of the families in the Lititz area have received enough donations, we then share any extra donations with the other Thrive to 5/Head Start classrooms throughout Lancaster County,” she noted. On Dec. 15, the day after the collection ended, Guscott counted up the donations and found that 783 items had been donated. Sillers said that she is happy to be part of a project that benefits children in such a fundamental way. “Thrive to 5 is very grateful for the generous donations from the Mitten Tree,” she shared. “Seeing the excitement on the children’s faces when they receive the warm winter gear is definitely the most rewarding part.” Sillers added that the parents are grateful for the warm clothing as well. “Our families really appreciate the children’s hats and gloves and mittens. It seems that
children often lose one glove or mitten, so having extras around is always helpful.” To learn more about the library, readers may visit www.lititzlibrary.org or call 717-626-2255. Information about Thrive to 5 may be found at https://caplanc.org.

Feeling crafty? Head out to Horst Arts, 17 N. Main St., Manheim, on Saturday, Jan. 9, for The Great Create. The event will begin at 3 p.m. “The Great Create is an arts and crafts competition, said Jason Horst, owner of Horst Arts. “It’s a little bit like ‘The Great British Baking Show’ but with crafts. The competition will include three rounds, which will increase in complexity. “The first round doesn’t involve a lot of skill, Horst said, noting that he didn’t want to reveal too many details ahead of time. “It gets trickier with each round. The second round is more technically challenging. You will follow written instructions and interpret them in your own way. It’s more of a design challenge, and while you’re doing that, you’ll learn about the history of Manheim and some of its notable characters. For the third round, participants will make something to take home. “In the last round, you’ll
create something beautiful that you can bring home and hang on your wall, Horst said. “Basically, the first round is about crafting, the second round is about design, and the third round is about being artistic. Unlike other reality competitions, no one will be eliminated during the event, but winners will be declared for each round as well as an overall winner. W hile this event is for individual competitors, Horst said groups or organizations can reserve times for special events like this one in the future. “This would be a lot of fun for an office party or a bridal shower, he noted. “For this event on (Jan. 9), you’ll be competing against strangers, so it’s a great way to get to know people. It’s a fun activity and lets you get creative. Horst held a similar event last year, but this will be first time The Great Create is being held in the business’s new location, which opened in 2020. “If you enjoy watching

Lititz Library Sets Programs Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, has announced its programs and activities. Patrons picking up their items at the library are invited to check out the “I Spy” game on the front door. There are new items to spy each week. Winter Zoom Story Time with Miss. Shannon is being held at 10 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday through Jan. 31 for children of all ages. Caretakers should email srichard@lititzlibrary.org to receive the Zoom link each week, and they should specify their preferred day of the week, along with their child’s name and age. Story time with Miss Shannon will be ongoing through January on YouTube. Stories and songs may be enjoyed at the viewer’s convenience. To receive emails with the YouTube links, readers may email srichard@lititzlibrary.org. Grab-and-go craft kits for adults will be available while supplies last in the library’s community room on Saturdays, Jan. 16 and 23. The History of Board Games and Board Game Design with Ryan Shelly will be offered via Zoom on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m. Each participant will receive a free mini magnetic board game, and one will be chosen to receive a free modern industry board game. Bringing Hygge Into Your Daily Life, a virtual program geared toward adults, will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15. Hygge (pronounced “hue-gah”), the national pastime of Denmark, is the Danish word for cozy, warm, or homey. A Hygge gift bag will be available to those who register and may be picked up at the library. Individuals may register for the board game and Hygge programs by emailing their name to register@ lititzlibrary.org, calling the library at 717-626-2255, or stopping by the community room. After registration, a Zoom link will be sent to participants and registrants can then pick up their mini magnetic board game or Hygge gift bag at the library.
