In planning out the details, Ketcham’s goal is to make the experience as over-the-top and memorable as possible for each person who attends. “We have about 12 churches that

partner with us now, and we try to knock it out of the park. I want it to be the kind of thing that when they walk in the door, it wows them,” shared Ketcham. “I want them to feel that we took time and really thought about them, because they deserve it.” Guests will be greeted by what Ketcham described as friendly paparazzi ranging from photographers to local mascots such as Cylo - surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening. Hair and makeup and shoe shining services will be offered, too. take limousine rides. “The limos are a big hit,” noted Ketcham. Author Will Discuss Wolf Sanctuary Author and wildlife photographer Chuck Rineer will present an author talk and book signing of his book, “Wolf Sanctuary: The Wolves of Speedwell Forge,” at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, on Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The program will cover the life of the wolf and the ecological impact it has on Yellowstone National Park. It will also

detail the work of the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, a refuge for displaced wolves. His book offers hidden details of wolf life, a behind-the-scenes look at the sanctuary, information on how the newest wolves are integrated into the packs, and an opportunity to follow the wolves through the different seasons of the year. After spending just shy of three decades in the military, Rineer rekindled

his high school hobby of photography, deciding to concentrate on wildlife and nature. Finding himself drawn to the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, he signed up as a volunteer photographer. For the last decade, along with his friend and spotter Denny Binkley, he has been photographing wolves and learning about them. He has photographed packs in their natural habitat, displaying a connection and respect

for their way of life. Rineer has had photos published in numerous publications, including magazines and other periodicals, books, and artists’ renditions. The program is free and open to the public. Preregistration is required by calling the library at 717-626-2255 or emailing register@lititzlibrary.org.

now have the opportunity to collect a unique set of finishers’ medals. “This is the first year that we’ve added finishers’ medals,” explained race director Chuck Wells. “If you finish all three races, you’ll be able to build yourself a snowman (out of the medals).” The races are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17, on the campus of Elizabethtown College. Each of the three races will follow the same rolling route through a neighboring development and around the college campus. Wells noted that the Idiots Option 10K, which was added for the first time in 2017, was a success and will be available again for those looking to complete a longer distance by covering the 5K course twice. The name sparked from a conversation Wells had in the past with two participants: One suggested the addition of a 10K, while the other remarked, “What kind of idiot would do that?” Interested individuals may register for the 5K or 10K series at www.appliedracemgmt.com/events. Those who register for the series by the first race will receive a custom longsleeve tech shirt. On-site registration will also be available prior to each race. Race packet pickup will take place on race days between noon and 1:45 p.m. in the Bucher Meetinghouse at Elizabethtown College. Signage will be posted directing participants to the area. Following each race, hot homemade soup will be served. Awards will be presented at approximately 3:15 p.m. Participants will also be entered to win door prize giveaways. Individual event awards

will be bestowed upon the overall male and female winners, the masters male and female winners, and the first-, second- and third-place male and female winners for each five-year age group. Series awards, which will be presented at a ceremony at Funk Brewing, 28 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, on March 17, will include prize money for the overall male and female winners and the masters male and female winners. Additional prizes will be distributed to the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Special discounts will be available at Funk Brewing to Frozen Foot participants following each race. Through the decades, Wells said that the number of runners has fluctuated - perhaps due to the influx of 5K events in recent years. The inaugural Frozen Foot series had 16 runners and later grew to more than 800 participants one year; however, in recent years Wells said the event has averaged about 375 participants. “I don’t know that any of us that worked on (Frozen Foot) in the beginning thought that it would be around this long,” said Wells. “It’s great. I’m happy that the race has been around that long.” A portion of the race proceeds benefits the Christ Church United Church of Christ mission fund to help people domestically and abroad. Wells said that the destination for this summer’s service project has not yet been finalized but will likely be somewhere within the United States. For more information on the Frozen Foot 5K Race Series, interested individuals may visit the aforementioned website or call Wells at 717-580-6983.

Warriors Remain Undefeated in Section Two by Vaughn Brown

Undefeated in League play at the end of last week, Warwick (7-0, 9-5) is running roughshod over Section Two where the closest team is Elizabethtown (4-3, 8-7) and the final three teams have two wins between them. The boys opened up last Tuesday with a 55-46 road victory over Ephrata and followed it on Friday with a 71-53 win at Conestoga Valley. Three Warriors hit double digit scores against the Mounts and all three lit it up from three-point land as well. Joey McCracken led all scorers with 18, including three treys, and hit two out of five free throws while Brock Fassnacht (14, 2, 2-3) and Colby Martin (13, 3, 0-2) helped build a 33-13 lead by halftime. Ephrata came out swinging in the second half, however, as Xavian Rodriguez (14, 1, 3-3), Lyle Kopp (11, 1, 0-1), and the rest of the Mounts exploded for a 20-point third quarter while holding Warwick to just seven to make it 40-33 to start the fourth quarter. In that final frame the Warrior’s defense was able to slow Ephrata’s attack down just enough to maintain the lead while outshooting them 15-13 to end the game. A huge 24-9 run to begin the game versus Conestoga Valley on Friday built a lead big enough to ensure a victory even though the Buckskins outscored Warwick 33-26 in the second half. Ryan Shirk’s 16 points and Martin’s 12 led both teams in a game that was 45-20 in favor of the Warriors heading into the break. Each team received substantial help from their respective benches as Warwick had 11 players score on the night while Conestoga Valley had help from ten, but it was too much too early for the Buckskins to overcome in the end. Warwick’s McCracken added 10 points, followed by Caleb Schmitz (8) Fassnacht (7), Kai Cipalla (6), Conor Adams (5), Justin Gerhart (3), Trysten George (2) and Nolan Rucci (2). GIRLS’ BASKETBALL On Friday January 4, the Warwick girls’ rallied late against Elizabethtown to pull off a 46-42 victory. In their first two games last week they continued that trend of keeping things close with a 38-37 loss to Ephrata followed by a 36-33

three-point victory. Jess Williamson joined Pyle in scoring six points each While Rodgers, Longridge, and Sydney Weismandel tallied three. Williamson and Abbey Finkel each added two points apiece, as well, and Armstrong and Elise Balmer each added one. Tied 10-10 at the end of the opening frame with L-S on Saturday, Warwick could not keep up with the Pioneers as they watched the game slowly get away from them on the back of a 17-point effort by Emma Gochnauer. L-S went up by four to lead 20-16 at halftime but had widened the gap to 34-21 by the end of the third. Warwick was essentially shut down in the second half by the Pioneer’s defense which only allowed 11 points during that span while offensively they tallied 24. Rodgers led the Warriors with 8 points scored including four-of-six from the foul line. Cieniewicz sees that his team is on the cusp of breaking, noting, “We’re playing good team defense and we’re still catching our stride on offense, but I feel encouraged by the direction the team is trending. Our girls are bringing good effort and a positive outlook on a nightly basis. We hope we start playing our best basketball in this stretch run.” SWIMMING Leading Section One along with Manheim Township (2-0), the girls’ swim team came away with a resounding 112-58 victory over Penn Manor (1-1) last Tuesday at the Lititz Rec Center. Warwick (2-0) swept the Comets in all three relays and won five of eight individual events as well. Hannah Greenway took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.16, just ahead of teammate Katie Jeanes who touched in 26.99, and also swam on each of the winning relay teams. She swam the final leg of the 200 medley with Lydia Hocker, Morgan Stuhltrager, and Isabel Miller (1:58.20), and was third in the 200 freestyle along with Catherine Chen, Stuhltrager, and Miller (1:46.02), as well as the 400 freestyle along with Chen, Miller, and Maya Hartzler (3:54.96). Chen also garnered a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 57.43, with Hartzler (57.83) right behind her in second. The two then switched places in the

win over Conestoga Valley before ending with a 43-27 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on Saturday. “We’ve had some close games and we’ve been able to win some close games because we’ve done a good job executing late in games,” commented head coach Danny Cieniewicz. “In the Ephrata game, we battled but couldn’t quite make enough plays. Give credit to Ephrata, as they did an excellent job taking good shots, playing tough straight up defense, and making their foul shots.” Indeed, foul shots played a big part last Tuesday’s contest. The Mount’s aggressiveness in attacking the net resulted in a 15-26 night at the foul line while double digit scoring from Ephrata’s Jocelyn Umana (12) and Gabi GerolaHill (11) kept them in the game long enough for a final surge in the fourth with the score tied 24-24. Warwick fell behind 14-5 early, but returned the favor in the second quarter by tying things up at 19-19 at the break. Both teams played tough defense in the third, holding each other to only five points apiece, before Ephrata managed to eke out the single point advantage in the final frame. Reagan Longridge posted a season high 10 points for the Warriors and was 5-6 at the line while draining one three-pointer on the night. Lauren Pyle joined the top scorer with nine and also accounted for a long-distance strike while Abby Rodgers and Lailani Batty each added six, Haley Delgiacco had four and Tanner Armstrong accounted for two, going a perfect 2-2 at the line. Taking a cue from their previous upset over the Bears, Warwick came back from a 24-13 halftime deficit to defeat the Buckskins on Friday night. This time, however, it was a 16-29 effort on free throws that played in Warwick’s favor. “We did a great job attacking the basket in the second half,” noted Cieniewicz. “It led to a lot of foul shots for us, and we were able to make enough Photo by Stef Supplee Warwick’s Justin Gerhart bounces a pass past Ephrata’s Allen that it allowed us to pull through. Organization Wins Christmas Tree Contest Humankind, an organization that exists to provide people around the world with clean drinking water, has won the inaugural Christmas Tree Lane Contest at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium. The top prize was $5,000. This holiday season, the ballpark introduced a winter wonderland that included Christmas Tree Lane. Approximately 100 nonprofits were supported by local businesses that each sponsored a tree. Humankind entered the competition

thanks to sponsor Brandon Hostetter, a local real estate agent. Humankind sells bottled water, tea, and lemonade to benefit those without clean drinking water. Its tree featured stuffed elves hugging bottles of its tea and lemonade, as well as images of children around the world drinking clean water provided through the organization’s efforts. The public was encouraged to vote for four weeks, with each vote costing $1. The charities got to keep all their “vote

money.” Humankind got 4,352 votes - or $4,352 - in addition to the $5,000 top prize, for a total of $9,352. The funds will be used to provide clean water in African and Dominican communities. Anyone else who wishes to give to Humankind through its nonprofit foundation, Kind Human, may do so by clicking the “Give” button at www.Be Humankind.com. The Barnstormers plan to run the competition again next holiday season.

www.aaronsacres.org by Sunday, March 31. Scholarships are available. New families will be scheduled for a face-to-face meeting in order for everyone to get acquainted and for staff to become familiar with the camper’s strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities. Having professional staff, including special education teachers and a nurse, as well as a 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 staff-tochild ratio, enables Aaron’s Acres to accept any child, regardless of medical or behavioral challenges. “Having that individualized attention makes for a great relationship and experience for the child,” Paskoff stated. Counselors are needed, and interested individuals age 18 and over may apply at www.aaronsacres.org by March 31. Paskoff noted that serving at Aaron’s Acres summer camp is great for undergraduate and graduate students studying subjects such as social work, special education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, but the organization is also thrilled to have anyone with a heart for the campers. “We love when people without those majors do it and get comfortable interacting with our campers,” added Paskoff. “It’s great hands-on experience for people who want hands-on experience, and they’re always supervised by professionals.” Unpaid positions are also open to high school students age 14 and up who would like to volunteer as buddies at camp. Buddies act as positive role models for campers under the supervision of the group leader. Activities at camp include swimming every day, music therapy, therapeutic horseback riding, arts and crafts, group games, and sports. “The staff give 200 percent, and they always say they feel like they learn more than they feel the campers do,” Paskoff stated. “They are really energetic, passionate people who will do whatever it takes to make (camp) an exceptional experience.” “We take every moment, and even though you think of it as just camp, we’re working on socialization and other skills at all times,” added Paskoff. Special activities, theme days, and community service are other significant aspects of camp. Through the Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (AAAOK), campers ages 13 to 21 have the chance to take part in community service projects such as running an Alex’s Lemonade Stand, playing bingo at Pleasant View Retirement Community and Danner Home, and having a car wash to raise funds to donate to a local nonprofit selected by the campers. Optional programs for parents are also offered during camp, ranging from guest speakers to pampering days with manicures, pedicures, and massages. Aaron’s Acres has hosted its summer camp in Manheim since 2013. It merged its Dauphin County camp site with Manheim in 2017 and its Berks County site in 2018. Transportation to camp from Dauphin and Berks counties is available. Aaron’s Acres is currently in the process of looking for a property or space to purchase as a permanent centralized facility for its offices, summer camp, and year-round programming.
