SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

These ferocious Warriors are ready to rumble BY JEFF FALK

here’s something fresh and exciting about anything new. But the most important thing about girls’ wrestling is the opportunities it presents to young women. Warwick High School is in its second season of offering girls’ wrestling as a varsity sport. While participation is still very modest and the process of development remains in the infancy stages, the Warriors have already established a solid footing.

The artistry of ink BY JEFF FALK

Tattoos are self-expression and art. Tattoos adorn the body, boost self-esteem and can serve as vehicles for positive social interactions. Alain Bravo is a tattooer, a tattoo artist. He’s part customer service guru and part therapist,

but all artist, all the time. “Every day is something new,” said Bravo, who has tattoos adorning his arms, chest and back. “I learn something every single day. I’ve improved over the years, but you’re never going to know everything. It’s about having an open mind. You can learn from everyone. But not See Tattoo artist pg 3

“There’s always been girls who like to wrestle, but there wasn’t anywhere for them to compete,” said Warwick head coach Ned Bushong. “Why not wrestle? For a lot of them, it’s going to open opportunities for education. Technique-wise, they’re as good as the guys. It’s a good individual sport. Women can compete in it just the same as men. If they’re competing against other women, it’s equal.” This year ’s War wick girls’ wrestling squad consists of four competitors - senior Shannon English, junior Lily Sell, freshman Kori Elle McMillion and freshman Sadie McClain. While the girls are working hard in practice, the best way to improve their skills is hand-to-hand, live action. “ S ome g irls w ill have 30 matches this season, and some may have 20,” said Bushong. “I’d like to get 15 to 20 bouts for our girls. At this point, I’d be very

happy to have one qualify for the sectional (opening round of the postseason) tournament. Ideally, I’d like to have some qualify for states, but I have to be realistic. Most of them are just brand new and giving it a shot.” During this past offseason, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) sanctioned girls’ wrestling as a varsity sport. That decision paved the way for a girls’ wrestling postseason, including the individual state championship tournament at Hershey’s Giant Center on Thursday to Saturday,

March 7 to 9. Warwick will compete at the Lancaster-Lebanon League girls’ wrestling tournament at Manheim Township High School on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26 and 27. “We haven’t won a whole lot of individual bouts yet,” said Bushong. “Girls’ wrestling is the fastest-growing sport in the country and Pennsylvania is behind all of its neighboring states. It’s just starting to take off in Pennsylvania. It’s catching on. I think over the next couple of years Pennsylvania will become one of the powers.”

Don’t distract the dog! Service animal etiquette shared BY ANN MEAD ASH

It started with a Facebook post that alerted readers as to what to do if approached by a lone dog in a service vest. The post advised following the dog because the canine’s person might be in trouble. While the advice seemed reasonable, suspicion of such posts alerted this feature writer to seek an opinion from the staff of United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dog program. Puppy coordinator Kristy Conrad confirmed that the

advice is good. “If a service dog is separated from their person, that should be a reason for concern,” she stated. “If (the dog) turns around to take you, you should follow because the person could be in trouble,” added service dog program manager Lori Breece. These answers led to discussion of general service dog etiquette that respects the dog’s owner or handler - things we should all be aware of when we see a dog working in public. Ideas for healthy eating Diet and exercise are the key components of maintaining a healthy weight and protecting against chronic disease. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, eating smart and being active have similar effects, including reducing risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some cancers, and diabetes. In addition, these healthy living strategies can improve personal appearance and can improve overall well-being, helping people live longer and maintain their independence. People may wonder how to eat better when faced with many diets, each of which promises great results. Navigating the options can be confusing, and there is no mag ic

formula to eating better. Common sense can come into play when attempting to eat better, and individuals also can consider the following strategies to make a diet work for them as they seek to live healthier. - Eat colorful, varied, nutritionally dense foods. Medical News Today says each meal should be 50% fruit and vegetables, 25% whole grains, and 25% protein. Select an array of colorful foods that will provide most of the nutrients needed. - Choose fiber-rich foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes are good sources of fiber. Fiber helps people maintain digestive health and can help a person to feel fuller longer, reducing the potential for over-

eating, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. - Note how you feel after eating. Create a food journal where you jot down notes about how you feel after eating certain foods. If you notice that certain foods or ingredients trigger adverse reactions, it may be worth avoiding that type of food or looking for an alternative. Stomach upset or bloating after eating dairy, for example, may indicate an intolerance for lactose. - Explore the Mediterranean diet. While it’s wise to avoid fad diets that often produce short-term but unsustainable results, the Mediterranean diet has stood the test of time. According to the authors of a study published in JAMA Network Open in

October 2023, middle-aged and older adults who were overweight or obese and had metabolic syndrome lost visceral fat (belly fat) a nd s h o we d a g re ate r reduction in the percentage of total fat while adhering to a Mediterranean diet. They also had delayed loss of lean body mass, which often comes with aging. Mediterranean diets prioritize legumes, seafood, vegetables, and healthful fats like olive oil. - Control portion sizes. Sometimes it’s not what

Focusing on the positive can help people feel less restricted by healthy eating plans. Balanced eating is a major component of a healthy lifestyle. a person eats but how much he or she eats that affects health. Weighing and measuring food can help a p ers on control portions and understand how many calories he or she is consuming each day. The National Institutes of Health says eating plans that favor 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 for men are good targets to lose weight at a healthy pace when combined with moderate exercise. - Focus on adding healthy

tion can shorten attention spans. Reading requires undivided attention and focus, which can improve one’s ability to concentrate. Those who are looking for a sense of accomplishment may read anything from a newspaper article to a novel. Finishing this task, helps people check off measurable goals, and the mental boost they receive may enhance their mood. Additionally, as long as a person borrows books from a library or a friend, reading is free. It’s possible to educate oneself, travel to far-off lands or even solve mysteries without making a major financial investment. Reading also has the power to enhance literacy and intelligence, as frequent reading introduces the reader to new vocabu-

Also, a study of 1,890 identical twins in the United Kingdom found that the twins who had early reading skills seemingly had more positive results for higher intelligence later in life. Furthermore, if people read paper books rather than e-books before bedtime, this activity takes a person away from screens. Screens can contribute to losing 20 minutes of sleep on average, according to research published in Pediatrics. There are many reasons to curl up with a good book, as reading is beneficial to both mind and body.

Strategies for preventing sports injuries Athletes train hard with a goal of performing at their peak when competition begins. Exercise is beneficial for the body, but at times athletes may be in jeopardy of overdoing it in pursuit of doing their best. Johns Hopkins Medicine says many sports injuries can be prevented with proper precautions. To begin with, athletes should wear the right gear. Using the right equipment or gear and wearing supportive shoes can help prevent injury, as can using safety items like helmets

and protective pads. Athletes should ensure that all equipment is properly fitted and replace items if they become damaged or worn out. Maintaining flexibility and strength is also important. The experts at the Mount Sinai health organization say it is extremely imp or tant to p er for m dynamic stretches before starting a physical activity, as cold muscles are more vulnerable to injury. Also, exercises that strengthen the muscles used for the sport are beneficial, particularly those that target the

core. Core-strengthening exercises improve balance and stability, which is essential in all sports. Athletes should learn the proper techniques for playing a sport or engaging in a physical activity like strength training. Poor form on the field or in the gym can put athletes at risk for injury, says the University of Rochester Medical Center. Listening to one’s body is another key to staying injury-free. Tattoo artist from pg 1 everyone can do this. You have to be an artist.” Along with colleagues Marissa Gristini and Andrew Bryson, Bravo is one of three tattoo artists employed by Kingdom Ink in Lititz. While each tattoo artist possesses his or her own unique skills and techniques, they work as a team to ensure each and every customer’s vision of body art becomes a reality. Last year, Kingdom Ink applied more than 900 tattoos to its customers, a figure that seems to represent the continuing popularity of tattooing. “I feel better when I get a tattoo,” said Bravo, a 37-year-old resident of Lititz. “But you have to be sure what you want, because it’s going to be in your skin for the rest of your life.” “I love Alain,” said Trisha Mason, who, along with husband William, owns Kingdom Ink. “I can ask him to do anything, and he

won’t complain. He’s super grateful to be here and hang out with us. We’re like a family in here.” “ T hey all care about their art and what they’re putting on clients,” Trisha added. “They want to give you the best version of what they can give you. They all know how to do a wide variety of things.” The art of tattooing dates back thousands of years, and there was a time when tattoos were frowned upon in society or almost taboo. But beginning around the turn of the 21st century, the popularity of tattoos gained momentum, and they’ve evolved to a point now that borders on normalization. “ I t ’s e v e r y o n e a n d anyone,” said Bravo. “I can’t tell you when it happened. I really don’t know. I just woke up one day a few years ago, and it seemed like everyone had one. Years ago, no one had tattoos.” “I’ve had people in their

80s who’ve never had a tattoo before come in and get one for the first time. I don’t think it’s a younger thing,” continued Bravo. T here are no cer tif ications or schooling required to be a tattoo ar tist . But many have attended art schools or completed apprenticeships under more experienced colleagues. “It’s not easy,” said Bravo. “We work hard.” The process of receiving a tattoo requires an initial consultation, and the act itself can take anywhere from 15 minutes to six hours to complete, depending upon the detail, composition and colors of the design. Among the most popular tattoos are crosses, Bible verses, Roman numerals, memorial dates and flowers. “Yeah, it’s going to hurt. I’m not going to lie,” said Bravo. “You have to prepare your clients mentally for the pain.”

to alert others to the dog’s working status. According to Conrad, UDS’ service dogs and service dogs in training wear red vests, while ambassador dogs wear blue and facility dogs wear purple. Often service dog vests are printed with words admonishing members of the public not to pet the dog or to ask before interacting. “It should be standard to ask the handler, ‘May I pet your dog?’” stated UDS ser vice dog trainer Susan Vollmar. “It should always be the person (you engage) first, and not the dog,” added Breece. Vollmar went further, noting, “The public should not be soliciting the dog’s attention (in any way),” she said. “Don’t make noises. Don’t talk. Don’t look. Don’t touch.”

The reasons behind such warnings go straight to the dog’s purpose in serving its person. “What if the dog is doing something for their person?” pointed out Breece, who noted that the dog may be focused on retrieving anything from a cane to a credit card from a wallet. “The task the dog is doing is important to the person’s independence,” she said. “Just don’t distract the dog.” Conrad suggested thinking of the dog in the same way one would any other a s s i s t i ve d e v i ce . “ Yo u wouldn’t hinder someone using their wheelchair or cane,” she stated. Breece stated that the same advice holds for service dogs in training. “Out of respect for the handler, please ask,” she said. “Maybe they are doing

Many of the schools in the Lancaster-Lebanon League are in the same girls’ wrestling boat as Warwick. Some schools have more wrestlers and are more competitive, and others still don’t have girls’ wrestling at all. “Girls’ skill levels might be good, but physical strength makes a difference,” said Bushong. “They go out and wrestle just as hard as the boys. When they ’re put on their backs, girls don’t have the strength to get out of it. A lot of girls’ matches end in falls. It takes time and exposure to know how to fight off your back.” It will be interesting to see how the sport of girls’ wrestling evolves, and the next few years will be important ones for the evolution. “I’d like to see us be able to field a full team, with back-ups,” said Bushong. “If our girls stay with it, we ’re going to be OK . You’ve got to get them young, get them started and get them interested in it. A lot of girls do things with offseason club teams. We have to pick up girls who aren’t involved with other sports.”

insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs. For example, in Pennsylvania, Norristown School District distributed 10,000 meal boxes in the summer containing five breakfasts and five lunches in each box and York Suburban School District restocked its pantry to double its service to 175 families.
