Sonya Cramer, who served as circulation manager and public services coordinator for the Lititz Public Library until she retired at the end of 2019, gained a lot of knowledge and experience during her 21 years with the organization. Cramer shared some of her wisdom at a party given in her honor in early December 2019. “During my farewell speech at my luncheon, I said, ‘A library is a growing entity,’ said Cramer. “(A library) is always changing, evolving, and growing. If you don’t plan at the beginning for the future, you won’t go very far. Beginning her library career in 2002 when she went from volunteering at the former Lititz Library location at 302 Broad St. to becoming full time, Cramer has seen the library change and evolve, as it moved to a dedicated building at 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.
“Once we moved here, we were dealing with what - to us - was a tremendous (number) of patrons every day, said Cramer, who noted that the library went from about 100 visitors to as many as 700 a day. “We were the shiny new library, so everybody wanted to come and see us. Cramer said that for a time, the new library methods of operation were similar to the previous locations, only at a faster pace. But more changes were on the way. “One of the first big changes was offering internet access computers for the public, recalled Cramer, who said that the library had changed to a computerized checkout and inventory system before moving. “After we were here a few years, that was not adequate, she said, remembering that the next change put all the libraries in Lancaster County on the same newer and more up-todate computerized system. “Now it’s all done from the central office of the Lancaster County libraries, she said. Family Fun With The Thunder By Ann Mead Ash
Lucas Morrison, age 15, is listed as the Stat Guy for the Ephrata Thunder, a semipro men’s basketball team playing home games at Warwick Middle School
(WMS), but according to his mother, head coach Malin Morrison, he does much more. “(Lucas) does all my promotions and statistics and everything I need on the computer, said Malin, who noted that Lucas announces games and helps out during practice. While Lucas is a busy guy, he does not think of his work with the team in terms of job duties. “It’s a lot of fun doing this, he said. “We’re not just a team. It’s kind of like a family. We are that close. The Thunder began playing in the area in the fall of 2019 as part of the American Basketball Association (ABA), which has teams in Canada, Mexico, and Australia. Patriotic Stitchers Plan Fundraiser By Ann Mead Ash
The mission of the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans is to provide handmade quilts and afghans to several area hospice centers where they are distributed to veterans. Currently, creations are delivered to the Coatesville and Lebanon VA hospitals, AseraCare Hospice, Compassus, Caring Hospice Services, and Hospice & Community Care. The Stitchers is a committee of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA). Members of the Stitchers volunteer their time, and necessary supplies have generally been
donated by the volunteers for the more than 125 blankets that have been given to veterans so far. Now, the group has decided to raise funds for supplies with a live auction on Saturday, Feb. 22. The See Patriotic Stitchers pg 2

The Lititz Art Association will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Jane Wise will present “Underpainting.” The program is free and open to the public. Wise has painted seriously for the last 10 years. She has taken several watercolor plant illustration classes at Longwood Gardens with Carol Gangemi, classes at Lancaster County Art Association with Karen Fratalli, and classes with Andy Smith in Lititz. Recently, she started taking classes with Larry Lombardo in Mechanicsburg at The Art Center. She said she makes art because she wants to create something beautiful or to capture an idea or feeling. Nature inspires her, especially flowers, many of which she grows around her home, and the change of the seasons. She is also interested in light and reflections, shadows, textures, and
Moving to the larger library was followed by a season of growth. “The collection grew,” said Cramer, recalling that the entire children’s collection from the Broad Street library would have fit in what is now the story time room. With more patrons, the library budget expanded. Not only did the library purchase more books, but it also expanded children and adult programs. “We do a monthly concert, and the Lititz Historical Foundation events are always full,” said Cramer, who added that an astronomy club and Civil War roundtable meet monthly at the library. The type of work that Cramer performed changed over the two decades she worked at the library as well. Using barcodes has made the work less physical and

shapes. She seeks to continue growing as an artist by trying various styles, such as realism and impressionism, and by alternating between watercolors, ink, and acrylics. In addition to creating her own art, Wise has taught art classes to homeschool students. The Lititz Art Association meets on the last Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library. Membership is open to all interested persons 18 years of age or older. More information is available at www.LititzArtAssociation.com.

I can’t imagine having that now,” she said. Perhaps the most drastic evolution has been the disappearance of physical books. “The biggest change in library use is that a lot of it is now online,” said Cramer, who noted that the rapid changes in information make this a necessity. She recalled a recent patron request to use an encyclopedia. “By the time encyclopedias are researched, edited, and printed, they are already out of date,” she said. “Even with the yearly updates,” she said, adding, “The internet has changed how people research books to read. They put books on hold on our website. They are told by email to come pick up the book when it is ready. That’s lots of change.” In her retirement, Cramer plans to spend time gardening, working on downsizing her home, and traveling with her husband and family. In addition, she will volunteer for the library and with the Friends of the Lititz Library. Originally from Juniata County, Cramer has lived in a number of places including Georgia and New York, but she has grown to love Lititz, and she said she will miss seeing her co-workers each day. “I have been part of a growing library, and I am proud of the work we have all done,” she said. Readers who would like more information about the library may visit www.lititzlibrary.org.

The Stitchers started about two years ago when a woman who was a social worker at a Lancaster hospice wanted to do something for veterans. The woman consulted her mother, and the pair thought making an afghan or quilt would be a good way to honor veterans. Kathy Baker and Jean Summers signed on to help, and when the founder of the group could not continue running the organization, the duo took over, renaming the organization Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans. Some donated quilts come from stitchers as far away as New York and Virginia.

Lady Warriors Look To Challenge For Section Title by Vaughn Brown
Ending last week on a 2-1 run which included a 48-39 Monday night setback to Section Two frontrunner Ephrata (6-2, 12-4), Warwick (5-4, 77) was sitting all alone in second place and was in a good position to challenge for the section crown. The lady Warriors ended the week strong with a 50-19 defeat of Lebanon (3-6, 4-11) followed by a 35-31 victory over Penn Manor (2-7, 5-11). After falling behind 26-18 in first half versus the Mounts, Warwick came out strong in the third quarter where they outscored Ephrata 15-8, but could not find enough to overcome the early deficit as the home team ended on a 14-6 run to close out
the game. Lauren Pyle’s 16 points with two three-pointers led the ladies while Tanner Armstrong added 10. Armstrong’s 16 points paced Warwick in its lopsided win over the Cedars last Tuesday in a game where the Warwick defense held Lebanon to single digit scoring in each quarter of the game. The Warriors bolted out to an 11-2 lead which it extended to 21-7 heading into the locker room at halftime. With Pyle adding 11 on the night, Warwick continued to add to its lead, outscoring Lebanon 29-12 in the final two quarters. Penn Manor proved to be an unlikely challenge to the Warriors as the Comets pushed them to the limit on Friday in Lititz. Catching Warwick flat footed in the first half, the visitors
extended an 8-5 first quarter lead to 20-11 by halftime. With Pyle pouring in 16 points including two from long range, the ladies answered the call in the second half, slowly waking up and getting just enough offense to pull off the comeback. Warwick closed the gap to make it a three-point deficit in the third before pulling ahead for good in the fourth with a 15-8 run. BOWLING Sitting in first place of Section Two, Warwick (47-16) has Elizabethtown (42-21) nipping at the heels with only four matches remaining in the regular season. After losing to the Bears 7-0 back on December 20, the Warriors have won three of their last four matches. Unfortunately, that one loss came against Elizabethtown, again, this time by a score of 5-2 last Monday. Warwick then put away Conestoga Valley (6-50) 7-0 on Wednesday to break even for the week. Against the Bears, Warwick managed to pull out a 990-960 win in the third game to avoid a second shutout after Elizabethtown won 1134-1087 in the first and 1143-930 in the second. Tyler Miller rolled a team high series of 666 with a 257, 163, and 246 while teammate Carter Snavely came in with a 221, 215, and 214 for a 650 series. “The remaining schedule favors E-town, as they’ve already bowled section one crossover powerhouses Cedar Crest and Penn Manor,” stated head coach Neal Vital. “We must face both of those schools in our remaining four matches.” Meanwhile, the Warriors completed a clean sweep of the Buckskins to finish out the week. Matt Geib rolled a 241, 195, and 218 for a team high
series of 654 and Miller followed with a 212, 171, and 234 for a 617 series. “With my younger squad, finishing on top of Section Two will take our best bowling of the season,” added Vital. “My kids are working hard, learning more about their own abilities, and will fight to the end. Whatever happens as we finish the regular season, we look forward to the post season, both in team, and individual events.” SWIMMING It was an odd week for the Warwick swim team which fell to 0-3, 1-6 after losing both of its meets, despite winning every event against Hempfield on Thursday. The boys began with a 69-50 defeat at the hands of Cedar Crest last Tuesday and were then edged out by the Black Knights 82-80 while placing first in each of the 11 events. Versus the Falcons the boys took two out of the three relays with James Moll, Joseph Sweigert, Brenden Stuhltrager, and Theo Lance winning the 200 freestyle in 1:39.16 and Lance, Rob Sabol, Ethan Hershey, and Stuhltrager clinching the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:33.06. Stuhltrager emerged as the only individual multiple event winner when he finished first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.23 as well as the 100 freestyle in 51.99. Lance took the 200 freestyle in 1:56.84, Moll won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.51, and Sabol was first in the 100 butterfly, finishing with a time of 1:01.94. Stuhltrager, Lance, and Moll all doubled up on victories against Hempfield while also lending a helping hand in sweeping the relays as well. In the 200 medley it was Moll, Hershey, Sabol, and Ryan Horner (1:51.6), while Moll, Sabol,

two of the relays as Eby, Morgan Stuhltrager, Greenway, and Katie Jeanes finished the 200 medley in 1:55.65 and Sherry Chen, Sophie Brandwene, Elizabeth Cadwalader, and Greenway clocked in with a 1:52.90 in the 200 freestyle. In the loss to Hempfield, Greenway swam to victory in both the 50 freestyle (24.78) and 100 freestyle (56.25) while Melanie Hahn (5:41.72) took the500 freestyle to represent the only events Warwick won on the night. BOYS’ BASKETBALL With their two wins last week, the Warriors (7-2, 12-4) extended their winning streak to seven and also took over sole possession of first place in Section Two. Last Tuesday they traveled to Lebanon (5-4, 9-7) where they topped the Cedars 69-50 and then hosted Penn Manor (2-7, 7-9) on Friday and came away with a 63-24 victory. Kia Cipalla bucketed 21 points against Lebanon and led a charge of three Warwick players that scored in double digits including Joey McCracken (18) and Conor Adams (10). Stuhltrager, and Lance (1:35.85) finished the 200 freestyle and Lance, Sabol, Hershey, and Stuhltrager (3:38.76) recorded the victory in the 400 freestyle. Stuhltrager won the 50 freestyle in 23.12 as well as the 100 freestyle with a 51.50 while Lance (1:56.66) took the 200 freestyle and finished the 500 freestyle in 5:18.46. Meanwhile, Moll claimed the 100 backstroke in 57.11 as well as the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.91. Hershey (1:06.93) finished first in the 100 breaststroke and Sabol (1:01.24) was tops in the 100 butterfly. The lady Warriors (2-1, 6-1) suffered their first loss of the season last week and landed in second place in Section One behind Manheim Township (3-0, 7-0) when they fell 89-81 to Hempfield (1-1, 5-1) on Thursday night following an 88-81 win earlier in the week over Cedar Crest (1-2, 5-3). Kendall Eby came through as a double winner versus Cedar Crest, taking the 100 backstroke (1:04.89) as well as the 200 IM (2:20.40) while Izzy Miller (2:06.51) won the 200 freestyle and Hannah Greenway (1:00.19) took the 100 butterfly. MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition section. Warwick easily handled Penn Manor at home on Friday, holding the Comets scoreless throughout the entire second quarter on the way to a landslide victory. Tate Landis and Chase Yarbeough paced the Warriors with 11 points apiece while both McCracken and Adams bucketed 10. Trailing 8-7 in the first quarter,
Warwick went on a 26-0 run that took them into halftime ahead 33-8 and they never looked back. Despite a cold third quarter where both teams put up 11 points, the Warriors commanded the remaining time, going on a 19-5 run to end the game and solidifying their hold on first place. WRESTLING In a matchup of the bottom two teams in Section One, Warwick (2-4, 5-9) hosted McCaskey (0-6, 0-6) last Wednesday and, after a couple of lead changes, eventually came away with a 45-27 victory. Using a decision and three straight pins in the middle weights, the Warriors erased an 18-15 deficit and gained enough momentum to carry themselves through. Following a pin by McCaskey’s
David Crespo to start the match at 285 pounds, Warwick used a 7-3 decision victory by Sebastian Oliveras at 106 and two forfeits to build a 15-6 lead before two McCaskey pins turned the tide in favor of the Red Tornado. Following Warwick’s run which made the score 36-18, Andrew Vogelbacher cut the deficit to eight points when he pinned Larenz Batty at 170 to make it 36-24 and put McCaskey withing striking distance. After David Hnasko decisioned Jose Garcia at 182 pounds, a Justin Pacheco decision at 195 for McCaskey made it mathematically impossible for the Red Tornado to win with the score 39-27 with only one bout remaining. Matt Woolley then put a stamp on the victory by pinning Kyle Rodriguez in the second period.

team’s mascot is Bolt, a yellow bolt of lightning against a purple background. The team was formed by Pottstown native Stephen Bergman Sr., but Malin recently became the team owner, making her the only female head coach and owner in the league, which boasts more than 150 teams. In mid-January, the team was ranked 16th in the league. Each home game has had a special theme, with the final game being Ladies Night. End-of-January games featured a high school theme with local teams invited to take part. Local sponsors also have opportunities to suit up and participate. On Jan. 5, local dentist Sean Moriarty, wearing jersey No. 13, left the bench for the court just before halftime. At halftime, a local dance team took to the floor to perform. The Thunder’s final home game is slated for Saturday, Feb. 15, versus the West Chester Wildcats, at 7 p.m. Malin was coaching basketball at Lititz Christian School, where Lucas was a student, when a fellow coach suggested she consider coaching for the ABA. Malin has coached basketball for more than a decade, and she has played the game nearly her whole life. At the age of 15, she was chosen as one of eight young women from Sweden to attend basketball high school. “We train, and we get graded in basketball,” explained Malin, who was chosen as a member of the team that represented Sweden in the world

championships in Turkey in 1990. After high school, Malin moved to Israel to play semiprofessional ball while studying Hebrew. She returned to Sweden and continued her studies while working as a trainer for a team that played American football. Two of the team’s players were American, and when she played basketball against them, they suggested she play for a college team in the United States. “I got to go to Wilmington College to play basketball,” said Malin, who later transferred to the University of Delaware, eventually earning a degree in physical therapy and Jewish studies. She also got married and moved to Lancaster County, where Lucas was born. The professional National Basketball Association developed out of the ABA in the 1960s. Well-known players, like Julius Erving, got their starts in the league. A few of the Thunder players are from Lancaster County. “Tyler Mercer, No. 35, is from Ephrata High School, and he is our youngest player,” said Malin of the

6-foot-4-inch power forward. Guard Nasir McFadden, No. 10, played for Thaddeus Stevens, where he averaged 21 points per game. Quentin Davis, who attended Lancaster Bible College, has been playing semiprofessionally in Argentina, but he plays for the Thunder during his breaks. Other players hail from Reading, Coatesville, and Philadelphia, while some are from as far away as Florida and Michigan. According to Lucas, Thunder games have been both close and exciting. “Last night we won by one point,” he said, referring to a Jan. 4 game against the Hub City Hogs in Hagerstown, Md. “Our point guard hit a lastsecond buzzer beater to win the game.” The home game on Jan. 5 was not low on excitement either, with the Thunder trailing for the entire first half and rallying just before the buzzer, but the shallow bench of the opposing Philadelphia Cannons team was a weakness Malin used to her advantage. Wearing the Cannons out, the Thunder triumphed 130 to 126 at the end of the game. For more information on the Thunder, reader may visit www.ephratathunder.com.
