Long’s Park Art Festival Honored With Award By Ann Mead Ash

When Rachael Lantz, marketing manager for the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation, and Rick Faulkner, artistic director for the Long’s Park Art Festival, consider the awards the yearly festival has received from ArtFairCalendar.com, they are astonished at how well the show has fared against the competition. “What is exciting is seeing our show up against shows from D.C. and Chicago, because we are (in a) much smaller area in comparison, said Lantz. “It’s pretty amazing. “We are up against some long-established (festivals) in metropolitan areas, agreed Rick. The festival raises funds for the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation. The event was held for the 41st time

over Labor Day weekend 2019 at Long’s Park, located off Route 30 and Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster. In 2018, the show was named Best East Coast Art Fair. In 2019, the show received the award for the second time and in addition was No. 4 in a ranking of Best Art Fairs in America. ArtFairCalendar.com promotes the work of artists who earn their livelihood as exhibitors at shows throughout the country. According to Rick, art festivals receive votes in the competition from exhibitors and art festival enthusiasts. The roots of the Long’s Park fair begin with Rick’s father, Richard Falkner Sr. “(My father) was on the countywide bicentennial committee in 1976, recalled Rick, who mentioned that a July Fourth festival in Long’s Park during the U.S. bicentennial year attracted both local and national attention. A Bicycle Built For Her By Ann Mead Ash

As Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania founder Lisa Palmquist welcomed everyone in attendance at the club’s luncheon for caregivers on Jan. 11, she shared that the event was “a bit of a dream come true for her. Palmquist worked as an instructional support teacher in the Hempfield School District for 26 years and spent many summers serving as a camp nurse at Aaron’s Acres, which offers summer camps for children and young adults with special needs. These experiences and others helped Palmquist to develop a deep sense of See Pilot Club pg 2 The

Chiari is associated with a variety of other physical problems including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), an inheritable connective tissue disorder, and syringomyelia, which occurs when a syrinx, a cyst caused by a buildup of fluid, forms in the spinal cord. Amber has been dealing with the issues related to Chiari since the birth of her daughter in July 2013. In the time since, she has been undergoing both physical and occupational therapy, but her health issues have made it difficult for her to make progress in either area. In the last year, Amber has improved to the point that when her occupational therapist, Erica Lausch, asked if there was anything she wanted See Special Bicycle pg 2

Special Bicycle from pg 1 you need a therapist to figure out what type of bike will work for an individual,” reported Erica. “I figured out what I thought would work best for (Amber),” she said. AMBUCS was able to provide Amber with a bike that could work for her at no cost. The bike has three wheels, hand brakes, and a number of special mirrors so Amber can see behind her. She hopes to be able to ride it with Addie by spring. Currently, Amber is looking for a system to turn the bike into a trainer for stationary use indoors and doing modified exercises to help her build the muscles she will need to be able to ride. Amber’s Chiari issues have required her to undergo 15 brain and spinal cord surgeries, some of which were necessary to save her life. The high pressure

to work toward, she said she wanted to ride a bike with Addie. Finding a bicycle that would work for her, however, was no easy task. “I have balance issues, and I can’t turn my head, so a regular bike would not be an option,” explained Amber, who looked at recumbent bicycles and found their price tag to be a problem as well. “When you’re sick, you spend so much money traveling to appointments and all the things you need,” she explained. Erica was not ready to give up. She contacted her friend Victoria Warfel of Lititz AMBUCS, a civic group that works to create independence and mobility for people with disabilities, and asked if the organization, known for providing adaptive bicycles for children, could help an adult. “They have all types of bikes, but

in her brain caused by excess spinal fluid had to be relieved. “(In 2017), my neurosurgeon stabilized my spine … which decreases a lot of mobility, but it saved my life,” said Amber, who added that she is grateful for the titanium hardware that holds her head in a forward position. “Without this, when I turned my neck, it dislocated certain joints, causing me to not be able to breathe.” Following her second shunt surgery, done by a specialist in Maryland, Amber began to feel well enough to engage in more daily living activities, although she still cannot drive and she tires easily. Amber is looking forward to being able to get out on the bike. “It’s giving me another way to exercise,” she said. “With all the hardware, I lost everything but walking.” Before the onset of the Chiari symptoms, Amber liked to do aerobics and interval training. “That would all

be too high impact for me now,” she said. “With high pressure, you can’t jump up and down.” Amber is also thankful to Erica, AMBUCS, and others who have gone the extra mile for her. “I am not an insidethe-box patient,” said Amber, “(but) people who have invested in me and walked with me are why I can still be a mom.” Amber’s mother, Pam Jaskierski, added that she is especially grateful for those who have been willing to step into Amber’s life. “(The specialist) who helped her was a godsend because he listened, and he fixed it,” said Pam. “Otherwise we would not be here.” Lititz AMBUCS is a local member of a national charitable service organization. The organization holds annual fundraisers in Lititz Springs Park. Readers who want to know more about the organization may visit https://lititzambucs.com or email Ambucs@ptd.net.

appreciation for parents and caregivers. “To be in their shoes 24/7 - it is just amazing what they do,” remarked Palmquist. “They need to remember to take care of themselves first, and that’s the message that I wanted to get across (at the luncheon): You need to take care of yourself.” Palmquist and other Pilot Club members recognize that is much easier said than done - hence, the luncheon: a designated time for caregivers to take a break and be cared for and to hopefully be reminded that they are not alone or overlooked. “Our purpose is just to give some of these caregivers a chance to get out, sit down, breathe, and have a quiet lunch and talk to other people who may be going through similar things,” summarized Pilot Club member Gail Monteleone. Approximately 40 caregivers from throughout Lancaster County attended the lunch at Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim, the majority of whom are parents, grandparents, or guardians of children with special needs and abilities. Pilot Club members served lunch and dessert and gave goodie bags prepared for each person in attendance as a small memento to thank them for what they do. As Clarke shared her own journey with those gathered, she also invited them to answer the question: “What do you crave?” After hearing responses like alone time, forgiveness, and understanding, Clarke presented another interactive statement: “Even though I have experienced (fill in the blank), I have learned (fill in the blank).” “Even though you are craving these things, you are also massively improving and I want you to have a statement to affirm these things,” encouraged Clarke. Exploring, Growing Together, a forum learning series at Lititz UMC, will continue its 2019-20 forum learning series, which aims to offer a safe learning environment in which to discuss and explore topics and beliefs. The group meets on Thursdays on the lower level of the church from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Feb. 6, 13, and 20, the group will discuss “Day of No Return” by Kressmann Taylor. Discussions will be led by Evie Bergey. The book tells the mid-1930s story of a theological student who refused to preach Nazi doctrine and was denied ordination in the German Lutheran church. He fled to the United States, where he contacted Taylor so she could tell his story. “Day of No Return” is Taylor’s 1942 account of that true story, fictionalized to deceive the Nazis and protect “Karl Hoffman” and his family still in Germany. Now his subsequent life and true identity, which remained secret for the rest of Taylor’s life, are at last revealed in this new edition. In March, “Toxic Faith” discussions dates have changed to March 5, 12, and 19, if needed. More information will be forthcoming about this book and discussion. Participants do not need to have read the book to participate in the discussions. They are welcome to bring a bag lunch to eat during the sessions if they wish. Flyers for the 2019-20 series may be obtained from the lobby Missions Table and the Room 101 lower-level bulletin board. Flyers and brochures are available at the small group kiosk. Readers may contact Linda at 717-6260745 or raven303@ptd.net for more information or to offer suggestions for books and leaders.

Rick noted that the juried show focuses on attracting artists who have worked to perfect their skills and who want an audience that appreciates fine art and fine craft. “(This show is for attendees) who want to find things to love and to live with,” said Rick. “(The show is) juried and competitive,” he added, noting that in 2019, more than 600 applicants vied for 200 spaces. “We have a group of artists who have (participated) in the show and they score each application, and we average it and take the top scoring artists,” he said. “Every year the jury is different and has different tastes and opinions.” According to Rick, organizers of the show work to make exhibitors comfortable at the venue. “We know it’s hard to do shows outdoors,” he said. “We treat the artists well.” The festival offers breakfast and dinner and booth sitters to those who take part. Artist applications for the 2020 festival are due by Sunday, March 1. Interested artists may apply at www.longspark.org.

It was a showdown between the two best teams in Section Two and last Tuesday’s game between first place Warwick (9-2, 14-4) and second place Elizabethtown (7-3, 13-6) did not disappoint. At one point leading by 20 points in the third quarter, Warwick withstood a furious come back bid by the Bears, which only ended in the final seconds, and came away with the 70-66 victory. Draining 10 shots from three-point range, and led by Conor Adams’ game

high 24 points, Warwick led 57-41 heading into the fourth quarter before the Bears began turning up the pressure. With Ryan Parise scoring 13 of his 20 total points in that final frame, it was Ethan Minnich’s two clutch free throws with only six ticks on the clock that finally sealed the deal. Not finding any space in the paint through much of the first half, Warwick continually hit from long range as Chase Yarberough drained three on the night, Joey McCracken, Minnich, and Kai Cipalla, each made two and Adams added one. Warwick’s

defense in the second quarter played a key role in the slim victory as the Warriors held Elizabethtown to only six points and led 34-23 at halftime while the Bears ended by outscoring the home team 25-13 in the fourth. The Warriors solidified their hold on first place with a decisive 75-28 victory over Ephrata Friday on the road. Joey McCracken put up 22 points and drained three shots from long range as they continued where they left off against the Bears, this time dropping 11 three pointers as a team. Jumping out to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter, Warwick continued to pour it on as they outscored the Mounts 20-1 in the second to lead 397 at the break. While the hosts woke up in the third and scored 13, Warwick still held a 35-21 advantage through the second half. Tate Landis (12), Cipalla (10), and Chase Krall (10) helped lead the Warwick charge.

continued to struggle offensively in the third, and despite scoring 14 in the fourth, were outpointed 28-17 in the half. Friday’s matchup with Ephrata, while closer than Tuesday’s game, still ended with the same result as Warwick’s renewed efforts were not enough to overcome the section leaders. Pyle once again led the team, scoring 13 along with two three pointers, in a game where the ladies only trailed by three at halftime. The deciding factor came in the fourth quarter where, after equaling Ephrata’s output in the third at seven, Warwick was outscored 14-4. BOWLING Tied with Elizabethtown (49-21) at the top of the standings in Section Two, Warwick (49-21), which is coming off a 5-2 loss at the hands of state champions Cedar Crest on Friday, is still in a position to claim the title. “The section championship is likely to come down to our final match of the season versus Penn Manor,” commented head coach Neal Vital. “We are currently tied with Elizabethtown with three matches remaining for both schools.” In a situation where the two teams remain tied at the end of the season, a neutral site would be chosen as the location of a three-game tiebreaker with the total pinfall determining which school would claim the crown. Facing the team that bested them in last year’s state championship match, the Warrior’s Tyler Miller turned in the second highest series of the match rolling a 178, 248, and 228 for a 654 while Cedar Crest’s Darren Zombro claimed the top spot with a 299, 227, and 200 for a 706.

There, he got a 5-1 decision and then lost 3-1 to Zachary Shelley of L-S in the third-place bout. Woolley’s road to the fifth-place spot at 138 included an exciting quarterfinal matchup with Penn Manor’s Owen Rohrer in which he found himself trailing 2-1 after the first period. In the second he controlled the top position the entire period and began the third on the bottom where he hit a switch reverse to go ahead 3-2 before riding out the rest of the bout. (182), a pin by Matt Woolley (195), and a Hayden Benner (285) decision finalized the 42-18 defeat. Manheim Township High School was the site of the 2020 League Championship beginning Friday night and concluding Saturday where six Warwick wrestlers made the trip to the podium. Shreiner was the highest decorated Warrior placing second at 152 pounds while Hnasko (182) placed third, Benner (285) was fourth, David Woolley (138) captured fifth, Owen Heffner (113) came in sixth, and Johnathon Hackett (126) took home eighth. Shreiner began his journey to the championship bout on fire as he opened with an 18-1 technical fall over Franklin Liriano Sena from Lebanon in the first period of their preliminary bout and then pinned Manheim’s Bryce Dombach in 1:22 of the opening round to advance into the quarterfinals. Matching up with Tayler Sheaffer of Conestoga Valley, Shreiner earned a trip to Saturday’s semifinals with a 7-3 decision. The Warrior worked another decision over Northern Lebanon’s Nicholas Winters, winning 6-4 and punching his ticket to the finals where he met up with number one seed Colt Barley of Penn Manor. Barley’s impressive trip to the championship bout included three major decisions and a fall and he never let up on the gas as the Comet grappler bested Shreiner 11-0. Racking up three consecutive pins on his way to the semifinals, Hnasko ran into a wall against eventual 182pound champion Nick Baker who sent him into the consolation bracket with a 10-1 major decision. Once there, Hnasko got back on track with a 13-4 win over McCaskey’s Jose Garcia to reach the third-place bout where he recorded his fourth fall of the weekend over Logan Davidson of

Community Invited To Experience “A Taste Of MCDS By Chelsea Peifer

On Monday, Feb. 3, the community is invited to experience A Taste of Manheim Christian Day School (MCDS) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, which is located at 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. Food, live entertainment, and a scavenger hunt will be among the family-friendly activities planned, and people will have an opportunity

to tour the school and meet faculty and staff members. The evening will kick off with a free taco dinner being served from 6 to 7:30 p.m. or while supplies last, followed by an ice cream social starting at 7:30 p.m. Clown and juggler duo Cissy and the Man, of WJTL Kids Cookie Break Fest fame, will be at the school to greet and interact with children. MCDS guitar students will play acoustic music. Children may participate in a scavenger hunt - with variations geared toward different age groups - to receive a prize. All guests will be eligible to enter a drawing to win four free tickets to “Queen Esther at Sight & Sound Theatres in

Ronks. Those tickets will be valid for a performance between March 14 and Dec. 31. MCDS principal Jennifer Knecht, who has been serving at the school for nine years, said that MCDS wanted to offer something new in lieu of their traditional winter open house. “We want to have a community event so that people can come in and see our school, and they can meet our teachers and see some of the things that we do - in a fun environment, shared Knecht. “We’re really excited about it. Teachers will lead art, physical fitness, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities See MCDS pg 7

for children throughout the scavenger hunt. “It’s free to the community,” emphasized Knecht. “It’s also important to us that people will realize that we are more than just the Manheim community. We love the fact that we are embedded here in Manheim, but we serve students from all over.” MCDS began in 1952 and offers a Christian education for children from prekindergarten age through eighth grade. In addition to Manheim, Knecht noted that students attend from Elizabethtown, Landisville, Lebanon, Lititz, Mount Joy, and beyond. Currently, approximately 200 students are enrolled at the school, which has 30 faculty and staff members. “We truly do believe that this is a family atmosphere,” Knecht shared. “We love these children like their parents love them.” “We do a great job of connecting with families, and we walk what we talk. We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that their children’s needs are met,” continued Knecht. “We are a lot more than just academics. Our foundation is Christianity and without the promise of eternity, it doesn’t matter how good your academics are.” Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year at MCDS opens in February. People may ask questions and learn more about registration and tuition at A Taste of MCDS. SPECIAL NOTICE

12 - MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition - January 29, 2020

Landis Homes Plans Art Exhibit Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, will host an art exhibit featuring the work of Linda Ellen Ackley Gaston, a retired art educator and watercolorist. The opening reception, to which the public is welcome, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, in the Crossings Gallery in the Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center at Landis Homes. Pianist Janet Eberly will provide music. In the case of inclement weather, the event will take place on Monday, Feb. 10. The exhibit will continue to be on display through March. Gaston earned a Bachelor of Science in art education from Penn State University and took additional art classes at Purdue University. In her younger years, she was drawn to arts and crafts. She made most of her own clothes in high school and college and made wedding dresses for her daughter and daughter-in-law. Starting out, her paintings were mostly oils until she moved to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1973 and connected with an accomplished watercolor teacher, Fiona Banta. Since then, watercolor has been Gaston’s main medium. Nevertheless, she experiments with many different styles, and her collection includes subject matter that is realistic, whimsical and completely abstract. In Poughkeepsie, she taught watercolor painting to children and adults in her home and other venues. In 1991, when a new art gallery opened in the Poughkeepsie area, many of the exhibiting artists were her former students. Since moving to Lancaster in 1993, she has taught at the Iris Club and at the Lancaster County Art Association, as well as teaching homeschoolers. Gaston and her husband, Charles, who are residents at Landis Homes, have four adult children, scattered from Reading to Honolulu, and four grandchildren. They also have one great-grandchild. For more information, readers may visit www.landishomes.org or call 717-381-3550.

Valentines To Be Collected For Veterans Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory is collecting valentines for local veterans who are currently in the Coatesville and Lebanon VAs.
