Helping people feel better BY JEFF FALK

For downtown Lititz, Emily Allen means business BY JEFF FALK

struggles. And each individual is unique. “I’m not a medical doctor,” said Droney. “Different therapists have different skills, different training. Look at us as a team. We want to work as teams. ... We all collaborate together. We want to make sure we approach things in a holistic manner.” “Some people go to a therapist on a regular basis,” she added. “People don’t always look at therapy as if they have a problem. They look at therapy as a way to process life. You see everything. You see all different types of folks.” Droney has been thoroughly

immersed in the mental health field since 2015. “We’re trying to normalize mental health,” Droney said. “If we do that, we’ll progress as a society. The message is, ‘Take care of yourself and make sure your mental health is important.’ Is mental health care more accessible than it once was? Yes. Is it accessible to everyone? No.” “For me personally, it’s work I feel blessed to do,” Droney added. “ When you walk into my office, it’s sacred space. It’s an area of expertise; it’s always evolving, and we should always be learning.”

e all need someone to talk to, someone to bounce ideas off of, someone to check in with. It’s that exact moment when Christine Droney enters the picture. Droney is a mental health practitioner, specifically a licensed clinical social worker. There are many reasons that Droney does what she does, and one of them is a belief that mental health is important. “ There have been a lot of advances made in the field of mental health,” said Droney. “The advances we’ve seen have come from people talking about mental health and people writing articles about mental health. We’ve seen a lot of improvement, but we still have a way to go.” A resident of Lititz, Droney operates L ancaster County Counseling Services, a small, solo counseling/therapy office at 6 S. Broad St., Lititz. Droney works with individuals, couples and families. “I see people who genuinely want to feel better,” said Droney. “They come to you because they need some assistance with what’s going in their lives. People want to process. They want to have better coping skills. My goal is that you don’t stay with me forever. If I feel I’m not the best person to help you, I’ll refer you to someone who is.” “A large part of therapy is listening,” continued Droney. “You need to listen. You’re trying to understand what the person is there for. You want to see what goals people have for therapy.” Counselors, therapists, clinical social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, even pastors. The world of mental health practitioners can be complex and confusing. But collectively those in these roles are all a response to a wide variety of

After Harry Beauchamp of Lititz graduated from Manheim Township High School in 2015, he decided to take a break from his academic career to explore new oppor tunities. Beauchamp’s job at the hospital entailed moving equipment and doing general housekeeping tasks. Today, Beauchamp is a volunteer firefighter at the Willow Street Fire Company, and he works full time as an emergency medical technician and firefighter in Parkesburg and Kennett Square. Beauchamp star ted his career by completing a training course offered through a partnership between Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences and L ancaster EMS. In the first portion of the accelerated program, Beauchamp studied human anatomy and medical science. Once the classes were completed, he trained in the field to learn about patient assessment and other skills necessary to respond to an ambulance call. Beauchamp worked in Lancaster for two years before finding work in Chester County, where most emergencies are handled by first responders who serve as both EMTs and firefighters. “I never had any doubts about becoming a first responder,” Beauchamp said. “You don’t necessarily meet people on their best days in this job, but conne c t ing w i th them and being able to help in their time of need is really fulfilling.” Beauchamp ’s passion for his field isn’t limited to fighting fires and responding to emergencies. Beauchamp frequently takes pictures of fire stations and their trucks, a hobby that he acquired shortly after becoming a firefighter himself. Our goal is to never take away from the merchants, just to make sure our businesses love being downtown as much as we love having them there.” Allen has a background in real estate sales, and she will continue to pursue those interests on a scaledback basis. She also possesses experience in event planning and serving as a wedding coordinator. “I work well under pressure,” said Allen, a resident of Lititz. “I have always enjoyed meeting s ome one and f ig ur ing out how people can work together. I’ve always been the person who doesn’t get overwhelmed when things go wrong. I’ve always been able to see the big picture.”

Allen is a native of Indiana, Pa., and a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. There she majored in communications and pursued minors in theater and journalism. “Venture Lititz and I are one and the same,” said Allen. “I’m the full-time person who represents everything Venture Lititz is doing. I help everything come into practice. I’m super excited to step into Rebecca’s shoes. I don’t want to change things. It’s like, ‘Let’s add on and make things even better.’ I just want to enhance the things that are already going on.” “Venture Lititz is part of Main Street America, and they help train people like me to make downtown areas better,” Allen added.

“Lititz is one of the areas that everyone looks at to see how it’s done. Everyone has worked so hard to make Lititz what it is. If a storefront opens up here, there are a lot of people who want to come in.” For additional information on Venture Lititz, go to www.lititzpa.com.
