Stronger Together: Three Communities Partner To Provide Home Care BY ANN MEAD ASH
Lititz’s 2021 Ice Walk will feature more than 50 ice sculptures for visitors to see from Feb. 12 through 20.
Lititz To Host Ice Walk BY ANN MEAD ASH
he town of Lititz is known for a festival that is normally held in mid-February, but Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, wants to make it clear that the event that will happen in downtown Lititz from Friday, Feb. 12, through Saturday, Feb. 20, is not that event. “We are not calling it Fire & Ice because it’s not (that),” said DeKarske, who made it clear that Fire & Ice will not be held for 2021. Instead, it will be replaced by the 2021 Lititz Ice Walk, which will include more than 50 ice sculptures and extended hours at many stores and restaurants. The Ice Walk will include a variety of sculpted creations. The plan is to place interactive pieces near the Lititz Springs Park and the Lititz Post Office, with these pieces interspersed with smaller pieces that families can visit as they stroll through Lititz. “There will be a couple of the larger sculptures that are
local businesses. “We will have the Wilbur Bud and the Sturgis Pretzel,” she added. In addition, local retailers and restaurants will extend their evening hours to encourage visitors to come in while observing COVID-19 restrictions with regard to masks and social distancing. “We are encouraging people to come during the week,” said DeKarske, who noted that Discover Lancaster, which promotes all areas of the county, is partnering with Venture Lititz on the event. While the weeklong Ice Walk will bring traffic to Lititz businesses, DeKarske shared that an important goal is to alleviate cabin fever in area residents. “We are doing something free to help families get out (of the house),” she said. “That’s always been the goal, but I think that it’s been (an especially difficult) year. We’d like to bring joy to people’s faces.” Readers who would like more information on the Ice Walk may visit www.lititzpa.com or search for “Downtown Lititz” on Facebook.

DeKarske will have a freezer truck available in Lititz to hold those so they can be gradually placed. “On the one block, we will put out some at the beginning, and every couple days we will add more,” explained DeKarske, who has arranged for a group of volunteers to place the crystalline sculptures. “We are trying to spread them out to encourage people to walk around (outside).” Among this year’s sculptures will be likenesses of dogs and cars, along with a Statue of Liberty and Mike, the shorter monster from “Monsters, Inc.” “Last year, we had one that said ‘Lititz’ and had a rubber ducky, and that one will be coming back,” said DeKarske, noting that the ice sculptures are sponsored by
At a time when aging in place has become a focus for the elderly, three entities in the Lititz and Manheim areas have come together to provide in-home care. “We are using our continuum background to support those who want to age in place to make sure they’re doing that safely,” said Leanne Kiralfy, executive director of Your Neighborhood Connection (YNC), a home care agency that was formed by the collaboration of Luthercare and Moravian Manor of Lititz in 2015 and recently added partner Pleasant View Communities of Manheim. COVID-19 has created a larger niche for in-home care, and Kiralfy noted that YNC is qualified to offer necessary services on and off the three campuses. “We don’t only serve clients on campus, but we reach out and serve the greater community as well,” she noted. “That’s our mission.” YNC, which is located at 706 Rothsville Road, Lititz, offers a
variety of services ranging from companion care to end-of-life support, as well as licensed practical nurses who can administer medications and treatments. Kiralfy noted that with in-home safety as a priority, companion services may include helping with meals, meal planning, going to the grocery store, light housekeeping, checking mail,

GSV Half/10K from pg 1 have been open to safe ways they can help out so the event can be held. The 2020 race was held in a virtual format. Former race director Scott Miller, chief marketing director at GSV, began working with Cuthie more than a year ago to prepare her to take over the race, which has been a tradition in the area for more than a decade. “I spent time ‌ observing everything (Miller) and staff members were doing so I was familiar,â€? recalled Cuthie, who said when it was time to
start planning the 2021 event, Miller asked if she was ready to take over. Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role. To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist to discuss how problems would be mitigated in certain areas. A variety of changes will be implemented, including packet pickup with little or no contact; a “to-go style dinner the night before the race; a

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. shared Kiralfy, who noted that choosing which caregivers to place with which clients and offering additional dementia, cognitive deficit, and behavior training for caregivers is key. Resources offered by YNC’s three partners means a continuum of care when a patient living in the greater community is ready to come on campus. “Sometimes we are just going in to provide that support until the person is ready to move,” explained Kiralfy, adding that having a relationship with the patient and his or her family can help start a conversation about or ease a transition to a higher level of care.
February 3, 2021 - 5
The advent of COVID-19 has affected safety protocols for in-home care. “We have tried to mitigate that risk factor by not crossing over caregivers from different campuses and limiting the number of caregivers that see a client,” said Kiralfy. “A lot of folks want to stay in their homes. (To help them) to do that safely, we are making the appropriate modifications for those folks.” YNC served its first patients in 2016. The collaboration with Pleasant View was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health until December 2020. College Aids Food Banks After 11 weeks of fundraising, collecting donations and volunteering, the results for Central Penn College’s KnightQuest: Combat Hunger were recently announced. The philanthropic campaign, powered by 25 teams of students, employees, alumni and community members, raised $7,400; collected more than 3,000 donated items; and contributed over 100 volunteer hours to fight food insecurity in central Pennsylvania. The original monetary goal for Combat Hunger was $4,500, which the campaign surpassed by nearly $3,000. Each team competing in KnightQuest earned points based on funds raised, donated items collected and volunteer hours logged. The proceeds from KnightQuest: Combat Hunger will benefit a total of 10 food banks and pantries, including Central Penn College Food Pantry, which

one-day event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. We try to make it interactive,” Kulas said. “We help (campers) be kids again.” An intake appointment is required before participating in any of the Coping Kids & Teens Program activities. Parents or guardians may call 717-391-2413 or 800924-7610 to schedule a conversation with Kulas or a staff person, who will do an assessment to ensure the program will meet their family’s needs. Sometimes, young people are referred to therapists. “They can continue their therapeutic support while working on their grief,” Kulas commented. All programs are run in English, but Spanish language translation and materials are available. ASL interpretation has been provided in the past and may be again upon request. And if a teenager or adult has questions, program staff members are happy to help. “We will talk with them over the phone, give them ideas to start off with, and share resources with them,” Kulas said. Teens, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one and would like to meet with other young people who are going through the same thing, activities offered by the Coping Kids & Teens Program of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, the bereavement program for Hospice & Community Care, might be right for you. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the evenings. To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage
them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into agespecific groups. Children and teenagers receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults, Kulas reported. “The best way to support a grieving child is to make sure the adult knows how to support them,” Kulas explained. “We teach them how to talk with kids, the importance of offering security and predictability, and how to establish discipline, structure, and routines.” The Coping Kids & Teens Program also runs Good Grief Clubs and Camp Chimaqua. The clubs are schoolbased groups run by trained staff members. Camp Chimaqua is a weekend overnight camp for youths ages 6 to 12. Each camper is assigned a trained volunteer who provides support throughout the experience. Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a
