Food Bank Continues To Serve The Region BY FRANCINE FULTON
Like food banks across the nation, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been challenged during the coronavirus pandemic. However, thanks to donations from local businesses, help from governmental programs, the generosity of the community and the services of volunteers, the food bank remains committed to fulfill its mission,
“fighting hunger, improving lives, strengthening communities.” The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is headquartered in Harrisburg with a second location in Williamsport. It serves 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through a network of more than 1,000 partner agencies and programs. More than 60% of the clients the food bank serves are working families with children. See Food Bank pg 2
Hartz Physical Therapy Creates Charitable Arm BY ANN MEAD ASH
t the end of 2020, HARTZ Physical Therapy, with five locations in Lancaster County, formed a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called HARTZ Physical Therapy Charitable Fund. The mission for the new organization is “to strengthen our community through philanthropic support for essential charitable organizations in Lancaster County.” That goal provides only a glimpse into the HARTZ story, which began

more than 20 years ago when Brian Hartz, a Lititz native, and his wife, Amy, originally from Mechanicsburg, met while attending Rider University in New Jersey. In 2000, they opened HARTZ Physical Therapy in downtown Lititz with a vision of creating a work atmosphere that could make a difference. “ We wanted to empower our employees and give back to our community,” noted Brian. “(The idea was to) put the focus on employees first to mentor them

professionally and personally.” The couple also wanted to impact the area. “There is much need in Lancaster County,” said Brian. “We started early on trying to incentivize our staff and promote community engagement.” One employee who was inspired was physical therapy assistant Wendy Enck, who has been with the practice for 19 years. Enck recalled how Brian would encourage employees to participate in area 5K running events. “The more (5Ks) we did, we thought, ‘We could hold this
“We are workforce specialists,” commented Judy Wechter, site administrator for Pennsylvania CareerLink Lancaster County. “We provide job training and supports for individuals who are displaced and currently looking for employment, and we are an outlet for the county for employment and workforce resources.”

Since March 2020, when the pandemic arrived in the local area, the food bank has seen its numbers steadily increase. “Last year in a typical month we served about 135,000 people through all of our partners. During COVID, a typical month is (serving) 200,000 people, said Joe Arthur, executive director. “The vast majority of those folks that came for help last year was directly related to
COVID - job loss, losing (work) hours and the economic impact. He noted that, with safety in mind, the food bank and its partners began distributing food in a drive-up format. Programs offered by the food bank include Military Share, which provides fresh food for families with at least one member who served or is serving in the armed forces, and the ElderShare program, which

Dementia Awareness Information Session Set ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community (DFC) recently joined Dementia Friendly America (DFA), rebranding the local grassroots nonprofit organization to Dementia Friendly Lancaster County. One of the initial objectives of Dementia Friendly Lancaster County is to increase the number of people who are Dementia Friends. Crystal Yunginger, the Dementia Friendly coordinator for Lancaster County, will host a virtual Dementia Friends information session on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. She invites all Lancaster County residents to join the virtual event to learn more about dementia and helping local people who have this condition. Dementia Friends is an initiative to change people’s perceptions of
dementia. It aims to transform the way people think, talk and act regarding the disease. Attendees of the information session will learn about dementia and the small ways they can help, such as telling friends about the Dementia Friends program or visiting someone they know who has dementia. Attendees will become Dementia Friends by attending the session. Having volunteered to be a Dementia Friends Champion, Yunginger is now delivering Dementia Friends sessions to people across Lancaster County. Anyone interested in attending the information session may register at www.dementiafriendspa .org/dementia-friends -information-session. Anyone interested in additional information may contact Yunginger at 717-487-6223.

Dutch Apple Posts “Happy Days” Musical Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will present “Happy Days, A New Musical” on Wednesday, Feb. 24, through Saturday, April 3. Based on the hit Paramount Pictures television series “Happy Days,” this family-friendly musical features Richie, Potsie, Ralph Malph and Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli. The drive-in malt shop Arnold’s is in danger of demolition, and the friends come up with a plan to save it with a dance contest and a TV-worthy wrestling match. The show has music from Oscar-winner Paul Williams and a book by the TV series’ original creator, Garry Marshall. Dutch Apple is reopening with “Happy Days, A New Musical” after being shut down for nine weeks. Dutch Apple will remain operating at a reduced capacity with socially distanced seating. Masks will still be required while in the theater in accordance with the governor’s current mandates. update resumes, file Unemployment Compensation (UC) claims, and print or fax jobrelated documents. The enhanced service includes computer usage as well as attendance at workshops, job fairs, and other activities offered by CareerLink. Personalized service - the top tier - includes a career navigator who provides personalized assistance as the client explores career options. The navigator can administer
meaningful work. “Nowadays, everybody needs help.” Wechter knows whereof she speaks, as she has been a CareerLink client three times. “My success in finding employment was due to CareerLink. (It) gave me the support I needed,” she said. CareerLink is not about just finding employment, Wechter asserted. “It’s setting you on a career path,” she said. “We meet people where they are. The goal is a sustainable career.” When appropriate, career
navigators will refer clients to the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. The two organizations collaborate and support clients where possible. Wechter noted that CareerLink is not the UC office, although it does provide assistance with filing initial claims, and when the building is open, it has a direct phone line to the UC office in Harrisburg. Additionally, CareerLink is not a staffing agency, and it does not provide jobs for anyone. All of CareerLink’s services are free of charge, as it is fund-
ed by state and federal legislation as well as grants. Wechter recommended that anyone who wants to learn more about the available services call the Job Seeker and Employer Help Line, 844-744-8451, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. “Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. The CareerLink facility is located in the same building as Liberty Place, 1016 N. Charlotte St., Lancaster, but during the pandemic nearly all of its services are offered solely online. “Everything can be done virtually except physically working on a computer. We hope to, in January, allow people to come in to use a computer,” Wechter said. “We are very sensitive to people who don’t have technology or don’t have internet access. We are working on providing WiFi in the parking lot.” CareerLink provides three levels of service, and clients may choose which to use. The self-service option features a career resource room where individuals may use computers to conduct job searches,
assessments of interests and strengths, interpret the results, and help clients determine what they need to access those careers. Wechter noted that $10,000 per person is available for up to two years of training in high occupancy careers. Soft skills training and computer-read resume development are also available. “You need to put as many tools in your toolbox as you can to find a job today,” Wechter said, adding that CareerLink can help both laborers and executives find

Three Communities Partner To Provide Home Care BY ANN MEAD ASH
At a time when aging in place has become a focus for the elderly, three entities in the Lititz and Manheim areas have come together to provide in-home care. “We are using our continuum background to support those who want to age in place to make sure they’re doing that safely,” said Leanne Kiralfy, executive director of Your Neighborhood Connection (YNC), a home care agency that was formed by the collaboration of Luthercare and Moravian Manor of Lititz in 2015 and recently added partner Pleasant View Communities of Manheim. COVID-19 has created a
larger niche for in-home care, and Kiralfy noted that YNC is qualified to offer necessary services on and off the three campuses. “ We don’t only serve clients on campus, but we reach out and serve the greater community as well,” she noted. “That’s our mission.” YNC, which is located at 706 Rothsville Road, Lititz, offers a variety of services ranging from companion care to end-of-life support, as well as licensed practical nurses who can administer medications and treatments. Kiralfy noted that with in-home safety as a priority, companion services may include helping with meals, meal planning, going to the grocery store,

“Blind Date With A Book” Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, is offering the Blind Date With a Book program through Monday, Feb. 15. The program is meant to offer a fun way to try new books that one might pass by while browsing in the aisles. Community members are invited to visit the special
display in the library to choose a wrapped book based on one “pickup line.” Readers will not find out the name of the book, the author, or the genre until they check the book out, take it home and unwrap it. After finishing the book, readers may fill out a “Rate Your Date” card that will be tucked in the
book. They can report that the outcome was True Love, Only Friends, or Never Again. When readers return the unwrapped book to the library, they may place the completed “Rate Your Date” card into the valentine heart box for a chance to win a gift basket.

noted that choosing which caregivers to place with which clients and offering additional dementia, cognitive deficit, and behavior training for caregivers is key. Resources offered by YNC’s three partners means a continuum of care when a patient living in the greater community is ready to come on campus. “Sometimes we are just going in to provide that support until the person is ready to move,” explained Kiralfy, adding that having a relationship with the patient and his or her family can help start a conversation about or ease a transition to a higher level of care. The advent of COVID-19 has affected safety protocols
for in-home care. “We have tried to mitigate that risk factor by not crossing over caregivers from different campuses and limiting the number of caregivers that see a client,” said Kiralfy. “A lot of folks want to stay in their homes. (To help them) to do that safely, we are making the appropriate modifications for those folks.” YNC served its first patients in 2016. The collaboration with Pleasant View was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health until December 2020. Readers who would like to know more about YNC may visit www.yourneighbor hoodconnection.org.

LCHS Plans Remodel And Expansion BY ANN MEAD ASH
Plans call for Lancaster Catholic High School to build a new STEM center (left photo) and performing arts center (right photo).
As Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) prepares to start construction on a new STEM Innovation Center, Phase 1A of the largest remodel effort in the school’s more than 90-year history, school president Tim Hamer is looking forward to equipping the building to match the curriculum. “The once-in-alifetime rebuilding was informed by what we need to do to teach what we want to teach,” said Hamer. LCHS chose Marotta/Main Architects to design the remodel after holding a competition. “The beauty of this (plan) is the efficiency of being within the existing footprint of the school,” said Hamer. “We are repurposing space.” The renovation, which will also include a Student Commons and dining hall and a performing arts center, has its roots in the school’s strategic plan. “We needed to modernize the facility to offer students 21st-century learning tools,” explained Hamer. “That was the priority of our student plan.” A feasibility survey of the LCHS community was part of
the research. “(We asked) what were the top priorities, and the answer was interesting,” Hamer shared. “Exactly 50% thought that building a fine and performing arts facility and auditorium and modernizing the cafeteria was a top priority,” said Hamer. “The other 50% thought that modernizing our STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) facilities was a priority.” Hamer noted that the request for STEM facilities fit well with curricular changes the school was already making. “We are rewriting our entire curriculum simultaneously with the strategic plan,” said Hamer, who noted that LCHS will equip the center based on a STEM curriculum designed by leading educators called Project Lead the Way. “These are experientially based curricula for biomedicine, computer science, and engineering,” he said. The STEM Innovation Center, which will replace the third floor of Riley Hall, is slated to be under construction before students leave school in May.
The new auditorium, which will replace the 1929 gym currently being used for presentations, and the Student Commons and dining area, which will replace the cafeteria built in 1974, will be Phase 1B, with construction scheduled for the summer of 2022. “We will be using the space that is now the cafeteria, which has no floor over it,” said Hamer. “We will build the auditorium there because we can go up and stay within the footprint of the school.” Hamer noted that a triangular courtyard that exists where the three wings of the school join together will be filled in and connected to the school library. “That is where the cafeteria and Student Commons will be moved so we can make room for the auditorium.” Through its Cherish - Love - Honor campaign, LCHS has raised nearly $9 million of the initial $12 million needed for the renovations. Hamer emphasized that no funds will be borrowed for the project. “This (plan) is far less expensive than the alternatives, and it allows for a better flow

and use of space,” he said, noting that the present building represents eras of construction that were decades apart. “This is a way to meld them together. It’s very exciting.” To learn more about the building campaign, readers may visit www.cherish lovehonor.com.

to three (applicants), and then we present those to our entire staff (for a vote),” said Brian. “Amy and I don’t make these decisions. Our entire staff is engaged.” In addition to the Fall Blast, HARTZ has partnered with Water Street Mission (WSM) and matched employee contributions to the Lancaster County Foundation Extraordinary Give, in addition to other fundraisers. According to Amy, one idea behind founding the organization was to consolidate efforts. “The 501(c)(3) is to bring all our community engagement ideas under one umbrella,” she said, noting that it is important to be able to
support charities that staff members feel passionate about. “This (helps) us to support the community in a way we weren’t previously able to do with a piecemeal approach,” Amy said. “Often with smaller Lancaster County-based charities, they don’t have a fundraising (arm),” said Enck, who added that the practice has developed relationships with many of those organizations. “Now we can grow that,” she added. “It’s exciting (to have a 501(c)(3)). It is a whole new chapter.” Readers who would like to know more about the fund may visit www.hartzpt.com.

Effort Aims To Provide Support United Way of Lancaster County (UWLC) will launch Share OUR Stimulus, a fund for stimulus check donations to be distributed to individuals who have experienced setbacks due to COVID-19. Inspired by the national campaign Share the Stimulus, UWLC will facilitate donations to be given as a onetime gift to people who apply for assistance through www.uwlanc.org/stimulus. Readers may visit the aforementioned website to donate all or part of their stimulus check. Those who make more than the stimulus threshold are also encouraged to give, as are organizations such as UWLC’s Catalyst Sponsors, including Lancaster County Community Foundation and Central Pennsylvania Food Bank which have each donated $10,000; M&T Bank which has contributed $7,500; and High Foundation which donated $5,000. In addition, Oaktree Outdoor Advertising is pledging to assist in promoting the fund through free billboard support. Whether someone received a stimulus check or not, he or she can support neighbors who are struggling to cover expenses not eligible for targeted support. For example, a young mother can receive WIC to help purchase baby formula, but diapers are disqualified. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website.
