Salty, Crunchy, And BACK! Pretzel Fest Returns To Lititz
he first Pretzel Fest in Lititz took place in 2012, and the event became an annual favorite for both locals and visitors. However, for two years, there has been no Pretzel Fest. “In 2020, we were ready to go, but we canceled due to COVID-19,” said Karen Davis, Pretzel Fest publicity representative. The event, which is organized by the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area, was canceled in 2021 for the same reason. But for 2022, the delicious event is back with more than 20 Lititzarea locations ready to host tastings on Saturday, April 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kiwanis Club members will use funds raised by the Pretzel Fest to hold Kids Fun Day in the Park on Saturday, May 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lititz Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., Lititz. Kids Fun Day, which was first held in 2019, will include games, prizes, books, and food.
said Davis, who noted that On Broad, The Tattered Shirt, and Bunyaad Marketplace will also participate. “Julius Sturgis is a valued sponsor, providing pretzels to complement beverage samples and as ingredients in recipes, as well as participating as one of the tasting spots,” Davis added. Entertainment that will be stationed around town to provide live music for Pretzel Fest will include Frank Porter, who will play acoustic rock; Forgiven, which will play family-friendly rock; and Jack Roberts of Ragtime Willi. Organizers plan to abide by guidelines and protocols recommended by the CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health on the day of the event. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, Feb. 18. Readers may purchase tickets at www.lititzpretzelfest.com or at various Lititz locations. More information may be found by searching for “Lititz Pretzel Fest” on Facebook.
Pretzel Fest will feature more than 20 pretzel-themed tastings.

“(Food creations for Pretzel Fest) must have pretzels as an ingredient or they have to be complemented by pretzels,” explained Davis, who described one cheese-flavored treat called quattro fromaggi as a lollipop encrusted in pretzel with a pretzel stick. “I can’t wait to see what that looks like,” said Davis. Adult beverages will be added to the fest this year as well. Attendees will have opportunities to taste one wine, three beers, a mead, and two spirits,” said Davis, who noted that alternative beverages will be available to ticketholders who are under age 21. Davis added that participants will be asked to vote for their favorite tastings in four categories - sweet, savory, most creative, and beverage. Among this year’s hosts are some traditional participants and some new places of business on Main Street and Broad Street and beyond. “Dosie Dough and Zum Anker Alley are always favorites,”

He noted that two BOH trucks distribute items from the center to the surrounding communities. Lapp serves on the board of Plain Compassion Crisis Response, which is based in

But it is not the blessings the group is bestowing that BOH founder David Lapp had on his mind several weeks after the crisis when he discussed the response effort. “It’s been a real blessing to be able to respond in this way,” noted Lapp, who remained in Leola while fellow founder Aaron Fisher traveled to Kentucky, arriving in Campbellsville just about a day after the tornado touched down. “At this time, people want to give.” Lapp said that the devastation left by the 190 mph winds as the tornado cut a 165-mile path through Kentucky met the criteria the organization has set for sending supplies. The first trucks, which arrived in Kentucky at 4 a.m. on Dec. 12, carried water and ready-to-eat foods to bring immediate relief to those affected. According to Lapp, about 80 houses were destroyed in the rural Campbellsville region. Currently, BOH plans to have people on

Intercourse. He said a steady stream of volunteers has been pouring into the area ravaged by the tornado. “They focus more on the cleanup side,” said Lapp, who noted about 250 volunteers were being managed per day with 500 to 800 from the Lancaster area having served at the site. He added that soon after the tornado hit, representatives of Bowling Green contacted Plain Compassion to manage all local volunteers. “They were processing up to 900 local applications a day in
Bowling Green alone,” he said. “(People) want to know if they go there to give that their talents will be utilized and not just wasted,” he said. BOH was founded in 2006 when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that would otherwise have been wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. ministry in 2002. He is licensed in prison ministry through Hinkletown Mennonite Church, and he has served with Streams of Life, a ministry in state prisons. SFPM works to assist local pastors and prison ministry team workers to gain access to prisons. It is a goal of the organization to bring hope and encouragement to those in prison by acting as an arm of the local church. The organization also works with aftercare ministries to help ex-offenders re-enter society, with a vision to reconcile men and women involved with the criminal justice system with the community. The organization provides chaplain services at Lancaster County Prison and Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center. Ruth McKennon, of Trinity EC Church, who has been involved in organizing the Day of Prayer since its inception, said that she believes it started in 1995. She recalled being asked to attend a meeting at Lititz United Methodist Church (UMC)
and being told by the pastor at that time that the goal was to form a group that would unite the church community and organize a service. The pastor appointed her chair of the new group, which was called Church Women United. The organization, which included representatives from area churches, decided to hold a service on World Day of Prayer and to give the offering to the common cause of Warwick Released Time. For more than 25 years, the churches have taken turns hosting the event. McKennon said the group currently includes representatives from St. Luke’s UCC, Trinity EC, Lititz COB, Burning Hearts Community Church, Lancaster Evangelical Free Church, Lititz Mennonite Church, St. James Catholic Church, and St. Paul Lutheran Church, and that representatives are needed from several churches, along with any other churches that would like to join the group. Masks will be available for those who would like to wear them at the service.

Sharing Joy With Toys Northwest EMS has a mission to support the community. To help fulfill that mission, the station signed on to participate with Child Life, an initiative that provides new toys to hospitalized children. “Our office manager’s granddaughter, Taylor, was a patient in the hospital over Christmastime in 2020,” recalled Lori Shenk, community outreach manager of Northwest EMS. “She spent about a total of two weeks in the hospital, and she had never heard of Child Life before. She said it made all the difference to her and her
experience was so much better because of Child Life.” She came home and asked her grandmother if the station wanted to collect toys for the program. Shenk said the station began collecting in the spring of 2021 and so far, she’s made multiple deliveries to both Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital. “We collect toys year-round at all four of our EMS stations,” Shenk said, referring to the locations in Maytown, 186 Rock Point Road; Brickerville, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz; Elizabethtown, 380 W. Bainbridge St.; and Manheim,

TAX RETURN PREPARATION 60 W. Colebrook St. “ We accept new toys only. Clean Eatz Issues “WeChange Livez Challenge” Clean Eatz recently kicked off its annual WeChangeLivez Challenge (WCL Challenge). This year, the health food restaurant and online meal plan franchise will give away 12 weeks’ worth of meals to a participant in every Clean Eatz community, including someone in Lancaster. Those winners will also be entered at the national level for a chance at a cash grand prize. The challenge, which encourages participants to share the stories of their WCL journeys via social media and within their café communities, will run from March through April, but participants can sign up now. All winners will be announced in early May. Clean Eatz has more than 70 cafés currently open nationwide, as well as more than 70 in development. This is the fifth year for the WCL Challenge. Those interested in participating can register at www.cleaneatz.com/wechange livez or stop by Clean Eatz Lancaster at 1876 Fruitville Pike. Once registered, participants should share their efforts on Facebook and Instagram and tag the posts with the hashtag #wechangelivez to be considered for the prize meals and cash grand prize.

Ephrata National Bank (ENB) is accepting submissions for its “Lights, Camera, Save!” video contest, which is organized by the American Bankers Association Foundation. This national competition encourages teens to use video to communicate the value of sound money management and to set their peers on a sound financial path. “Lights, Camera, Save!” gives local students an opportunity to harness their creativity, learn about using money wisely and communicate those lessons with their peers. ENB believes that a strong financial education is critical to a successful future and the contest reinforces that message. To participate, students ages 13 to 18 must create a video lasting 30 seconds or less and focused on using money wisely. Students must provide the bank with a link to their video and a completed entry form by Thursday, March 31. The contest is open to filmmakers of all experience levels. ENB will host the first round of judging and select a winner to compete on the national level for one of three cash prizes. Additionally, the first-place winner will receive a local grand prize from ENB. National contestants will face off head-to-head in the first round of national judging on the American Bankers Association’s Instagram page at www.instagram.com /americanbankersassociation, which will determine which videos advance to the second round of national judging. Videos will be judged on their quality, message and content and the criteria set forth by the contest’s official rules.
