WHS To Present “Shrek The Musical” By Ann Mead Ash

Cast members of the Warwick High School (WHS) production of “Shrek The Musical,” recently participated in a photo shoot for the Merchandiser, but they did not all wear the full components of their costumes. “Here is a sneak preview of what’s to come,” said Diane Fund, costumer for the show. “We don’t want to give away the real look.” Producer Deb Kline-Smith agreed. “These costumes are a tease compared to the lavish costumes they will have (for the show),” said Kline-Smith. “It’s very challenging making

people into storybook characters.” Those who want to see the real costumes should attend the show, which will be produced at the school, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Friday and Saturday, March 13 and 14, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. Jill Gagliano will serve as drama director and choreographer for the show, with Ann Ahlers and Sherry Kline as co-directors of the pit orchestra and Sharon Walker as hair and makeup coordinator. According to Rick Pearson, Lancaster EMS director of education, a team spent 500 hours researching safety equipment for pediatric transport. In 2016, a new protocol was introduced in Pennsylvania that specified that in the event of a field birth - where a child was born outside of a hospital or other medical facility - the mother and baby cannot be transported together. Instead, each person is supposed to have their own ambulance and dedicated team of paramedics or emergency medical technicians. See Lancaster EMS pg 3

Registration has opened for the 27th annual LancasterLebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) education conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 23. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at LampeterStrasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. Registration will open at 7:45 a.m., and attendees may partake of a continental breakfast while they visit the door prize zone and sponsor tables. “Agents of Change ... Mission POSSIBLE” is this year’s conference theme. “It is the hope that this conference will inspire anyone in the educational community to accept the mission of educating all learners,” said IU13 early childhood and special education services program director Kathy Rose. The keynote speaker embodies that mission. Canadian Shelley Moore is the author of “One Without the Other: Stories of Unity Through Diversity and Inclusion,” which is volume 1 in “Reimagining Inclusion: The ONE Series,” and the

owner of “Five Moore Minutes,” a continuing education resource for teachers in which she shares strategies for creating and sustaining inclusive classrooms. Moore’s keynote address is titled “Teaching to Diversity: The Evolution of Inclusion.” “With 21st-century learning, our definition of what is success needs to include more people. We can no longer be striving towards a model where the goal of education is to replicate and duplicate ‘sameness’ in individuals,” Moore said in an interview about her research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) posted at www.grad.ubc.ca/campus-community/meet-our-students/moore-shelley. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alberta and a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University. She holds a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council doctoral fellowship at UBC, where she is exploring inclusive education for students with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities in secondary schools.

“We need to better understand whether and how meaningful learning of curricula becomes more accessible to all students when students with intellectual and developmental disabilities are included,” Moore explained. “To that end, my research will contribute by investigating how content area and special education teachers can collaborate to create rich learning opportunities for and with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their peers in inclusive classrooms.” In addition to her keynote address, Moore will lead a breakout session on supporting learners from a strengths-based perspective. Other breakout session topics will include brain development, autism and executive function difficulties, depression and anxiety, trauma awareness and strategies for supporting students with histories of trauma, classroom safety, special education and student services law, bullying, yoga and mindfulness for preschoolers, developing career readiness through esports, and more. Conference attendance is open

to anyone with an interest in education, particularly teachers, school district and agency personnel, parents, and college students. IU13 early childhood and special education services program support liaison Linda Swisher noted that because the number of substitute teachers attending the conference has dramatically increased, a session on substitute-specific classroom management has been added to the program. A tiered pricing system has been set for admission to the conference. Parents, substitutes, and university students will receive a special rate. An early bird discount is available for school district and agency personnel who register prior to Friday, May 1. Breakfast and lunch are included in the cost. Author To Discuss Book About Wolf Sanctuary Chuck Rineer, wildlife photographer and author, easily recalls the first time he was introduced to wolves up close and personal by his friend Bill Darlington, founder of the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania, 465 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz. In the late 1970s, Rineer and his kindergarten-age son were invited to the Darlington home. “We went in the house, and he told us to sit on the couch in the living room and to stay there,” said Rineer. “He opened a door and these little fluff balls came out. They were the first two (wolf) pups they had.” Many years later, Rineer began volunteering at the sanctuary, and he took his first photos of wolves. A few years ago, Rineer wrote the book “Wolf Sanctuary: The Wolves of Speedwell Forge.” He will give a multimedia presentation on the book and his experiences at the sanctuary at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, on Tuesday, March 10, beginning at 6 p.m. In addition to the book, Rineer’s photos have been included in a number of publications, including National Geographic Magazine online photo library. Rineer served in the military for nearly three decades and then

worked with the military for 10 more years before going back to his love of photography. He began taking photos of birds of prey around 2000. One day while on his way to the Conowingo River to take photos of eagles, he recalled his introduction to wolves through Darlington. He learned that Darlington had passed away from cancer, but representatives of the Wolf Sanctuary invited him to visit, and he volunteered there for more than a dozen years, taking nearly 60,000 photographs of the wolves that lived there over that time. “I fell in love with the animals,” said Rineer, who noted that wolf pack dynamics are similar to human family interaction. “There is so much to be learned about them and the way humans act,” he said. “Unless you have spent a lot of time with the animals, you wouldn’t realize that, but they are family-oriented and social animals.” Rineer said that packs will have both alpha and beta males. “The beta is kind of the peacekeeper,” he said, adding that each wolf in a pack has a role and that all the wolves are aware of their own role and the roles of others. “It goes down to the omega (wolf), and he is kind of a jokester,” said Rineer. “(The omega) is always trying to keep it lighthearted and happy.” Alpha females have their role in the

Lancaster EMS from pg 1 When an adult is transported in an ambulance, seatbelt-like straps are used to secure the person to the gurney. Straps cross the legs and torso and come over the head, preventing side-to-side and back-and-forth movements. For children, however, the devices used by Lancaster EMS had been rated to a minimum of 10 pounds, which is too big for most newborns. That prompted the search, with the resulting acquisition of ambulance child restraint (ACR) kits. The bags each contain four harnesses that can accommodate children ranging in weight from 4 to 11 pounds up to 100 pounds. The child is strapped into the flexible harness, which is secured to the gurney frame. The devices are made of breathable fabric to allow maximum airflow and to meet infection control standards. They are machine-washable for easy cleanup. The straps are padded to keep children comfortable and to reduce the risk of pressure sores from long-distance transportation. The ACR kits are not cheap, but Lancaster EMS leaders want

its 23 fleet vehicles to each have a kit. At the very least, the goal is to outfit the 15 ambulances that are in service during the course of a day with ACRs. Lancaster EMS started off with five kits, but thanks to a $4,771.97 grant from Highmark Blue Shield, the organization was able to purchase seven additional kits. Now, all advanced life support vehicles - also known as mobile intensive care units - as well as a basic life support vehicle and a supervisor vehicle have ACR kits. The ambulances each have a sticker declaring them as “prepared for pediatrics.” Lancaster EMS meets all of the standards of the master level that were established as part of a voluntary pediatric recognition program supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council, and the Emergency Medical Services for Children organization. Master level ranks just below the maximum available and indicates that Lancaster EMS conducts regular pediatric community education and provides pediatric-specific training

pack as well. “The alpha male is boss, but the alpha female is in charge,” said Rineer. “She has a lot of regulatory options she can play.” Because of the time he has spent interacting with the wolves, Rineer has a unique perspective on their behavior. “Their body language is something I have studied extensively while photographing them,” he said, noting that the position of the tail or ears give clues to the observer, but that the eyes are the most fascinating. “Intimidation is one of their best aspects of (wolf) body language,” he said. “If Chuck Rineer, wildlife photographer they know you are fearful, they and author of the book “Wolf Sancwill tease you. They will tuary: The Wolves of Speedwell scratch in front of you and Forge,” will give a multimedia presnap at you.” His years in the sentation on the book and his expewolf enclosures have given riences at the sanctuary at the Manhim the experience to be in heim Township Public Library on close contact with wolves. “If March 10 at 6 p.m. they intimidate, you stand upright and stand your ground,” he said. “In five or 10 dirt, and Cheyenne came up and minutes, they will walk away and sat in my lap and Loci came and sat beside me,” said Rineer, who go about their business.” Rineer recalled a photo that he noted that wolves do not normaldid not take that depicts his ly like to be around people. “You experience with two of the usually see them from far away,” wolves at the sanctuary. Denny he noted. “ We are the only Binkley, his friend and spotter enemy that they have.” Readers wishing to attend during his time as sanctuary photographer, took a photo of Rineer Rineer’s presentation must regisin close contact with two wolves. ter beforehand at https://mtpl “I was sitting on a little mound of .info/event/wolves-program.

for staff members. All staff members must have clear background checks as well. To reach the top level, Lancaster EMS must submit paperwork indicating that it has a person certified to perform car seat safety checks on staff. “We’re not complacent,” director of operation Jerry Schramm remarked. Additionally, Lancaster EMS is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services, which promotes national standards of excellence. Just 186 ambulance services out of the country’s 21,000 agencies are nationally accredited, and Lancaster EMS is one of only five in Pennsylvania. Accreditation may be renewed or revoked following an evaluation every three years. Grants to purchase additional ACR kits are pending, said marketing and development coordinator Marisa Seubert, but donations are always welcome. named Shrek, played by Jonah Gibson, finds his swamp taken over by fairytale creatures that had been thrown out of the kingdom of Duloc by Lord Farquaad, played by Akash Banerjee. Accompanied by a talkative Donkey, played by Caleb Goss, Shrek embarks on a mission to regain his swamp. In exchange for his swamp, he must rescue Princess Fiona, played by Lauren Epps, whom Farquaad plans to marry. As the adventure unfolds, Shrek and Fiona find themselves following a road they never expected to travel, resulting in comedy, music, and love. According to Epps, the stage show provides a more intimate portrait of Shrek and Fiona than the animated movie. “You get more background on Shrek,” she said. “The musical version tells the backstories (of the characters) and how they got to be where they are, so you get to know them, and they aren’t just funny characters.” Gibson agreed, noting, “Shrek had a rough life that contributes to his thick, tough outer shell. You have to break through that

to see the nice side of him.” Kline-Smith noted that the original music for the show is complicated. The only song that is a holdover from the movie is “I’m a Believer,” performed by Smash Mouth. “Musically it’s very challenging,” said KlineSmith. “Rhythmically it is very challenging. It has a contemporary feel and style that is more difficult to sing.” Kline-Smith believes audiences will enjoy Shrek’s numbers, which she said are very catchy. She also cited a number called “I Know It’s Today,” where three actresses representing Fiona as a child, as a teenager, and as an adult will each sing and then join together as a trio. She mentioned the Dulochians and the singing and dancing dragonettes as among her favorite parts of the show. Kline-Smith noted that the show is family friendly, and Epps added that it is also quite amusing. “It’s hilarious,” she said. “We are practicing, and we can’t keep ourselves together.” Although the show is comedic, it also packs an important message. “(The show) ties into my

They see the level of expectation and they continue to want to (meet) that.” The leads are aware of how their performances will affect audience members. “I want audiences to take home a good experience,” said Gibson. “They need to smile when they exit the auditorium,” added Goss. Partnership from pg 1 anxiety, and suicide risk to area middle and high school students. Since the beginning of the fall 2019 semester, MHALC and TeenHope have been working together to provide students with education regarding anxiety, depression, and suicide prior to the screenings. “ When I learned of (MHALC’s) existing program, it seemed to be a perfect fit, said Kim Moore, director of TeenHope. That realization led to a pilot program at a couple of Lancaster County high schools, where Gaudioso has spoken to students who were participating in screenings. Gaudioso educates teenagers about mental health treatments, which include therapy, medication if needed, having supportive people around, and educating oneself about symptoms. She also talks about the steps involved in getting help and the different types of therapists available, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, or licensed social workers, and she talks about what students can expect during the screening. Part of Gaudioso’s presentation

is to encourage students to be honest during the screening. “I tell them they need to be honest and true to themselves because it will only help them, she said, adding that she goes over the signs of depression and anxiety in detail with students and asks them to take a serious look at their own behavior. She asks them to look at things they once participated in that they are no longer doing, such as communicating with friends, completing schoolwork, playing a sport, or spending time with family. Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC, noted that the organization is trying to be proactive in facing the increased rate of anxiety and depression in teenagers. “We are working diligently to remove the barriers that prevent one from getting the help they need, said McDevitt. “Mental health disorders can affect school performance, harm relationships, and lead to suicide, (so) we have increased our efforts in educating students on the importance of mental wellness, how to identify what a mental health challenge is,

and how they can receive support for themselves and others.â€? When Gaudioso speaks to students, she tries to allay anxiety and fear about participating in a mental health screening. “(I tell them this is) just like getting your height, weight, and vision checked (at school),â€? she said. “You get your mental health checked.â€? Gaudioso explained that the screenings are done by licensed professionals, and students are referred to other mental health specialists depending on the test results. Following a presentation, the students will be surveyed to gauge the impact of the information they have received. “We feel it’s important for students to have as much information as possible so they know it’s normal to struggle in these areas ‌ and there is help available for everyone,â€? said Moore. Readers who would like to learn more about MHALC may visit www.mhalancaster.org. More information about TeenHope may be found at http://scclanc.org/teenhope.

The Art Gallery at United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC), 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, is featuring the oil paintings of Chris Gold during March. Gold, a resident of York, started painting later in life. Her creative journey began in 1999, when she and her daughter began taking private pottery lessons together. In these lessons, Gold discovered the joy of creating something functional from a lump of clay. In 2013, remembering her fascination with watching her father paint, she decided to start painting with acrylics. As her skill improved, she switched to oils and painting became her medium of choice. Gold is a representational landscape painter leaning into Impressionism and aims to use light to captivate the eye and the imagination. Some of her paintings include elements of surrealism. Most of her landscapes are inspired by the Pennsylvania area and celebrate nature and God’s creation. A retired nurse practitioner, Gold is showing her work in area

Civil War Roundtable Will Meet The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable will meet on Thursday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Author and historian Jim Hessler will present “Gettysburg’s Peach Orchard: Longstreet, Sickles, and the Bloody Fight for the ‘Commanding Ground’ Along the Emmitsburg Road.” The historiography of the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg is usually dominated by the Union’s successful defense of Little Round Top, but other influential action on that day occurred nearly 1 mile west along the Emmitsburg Road in farmer Joseph Sherfy’s peach orchard. Hessler has been a licensed battlefield guide at Gettysburg National Military Park since 2003. His book “Sickles at Gettysburg” was awarded the prestigious Bachelder Coddington Award and the Gettysburg Civil War Round Table’s Distinguished Book Award as the most outstanding work on the Gettysburg Campaign. With licensed battlefield guide Wayne

Motts, he co-authored “Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg,” featuring maps by Civil War Trust cartographer Steve Stanley; it is the first battlefield guide to the legendary final attack at Gettysburg. Hessler has written a number of articles for publication in magazines such as Gettysburg Magazine and America’s Civil War. He was one of the primary content designers for the Civil War Trust’s mobile Gettysburg application. Hessler is an adjunct professor at the Gettysburg campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. He has appeared on NPR, Travel Channel, PCN-TV, Breitbart News, and Civil War Radio. He is also a member of Gettysburg’s Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides, Little Big Horn Associates, and Custer Battlefield Memorial Association. The program is free and open to the public. 1040 Accounting Service, Inc. 23rd Year!

This past weekend marked the end of Warwick’s winter sports season as the final events played themselves out and the only remaining athletes left standing were eliminated from post-season play. Both the boys’ and girls’ swim teams and the remaining Warwick bowlers ended their championship hopes, although a few finished with some hardware around their necks. While no individual girl swimmers made it to the medal stands in this past weekend’s District Three Class AAA meet, the ladies did place in two relays at Cumberland Valley High School over two days of competition. Melanie Hahn, Morgan Stuhltrager, Evie Cadwalader, and Hannah Greenway used a finishing time of 1:40.90 to claim eighth place in Friday’s 200 freestyle while on Saturday, Hahn, Kendall Eby, Isabel Miller, and Greenway capped the meet with a seventh-place finish in 3:39.83.

Leading up to Friday’s relay win, a contingent of lady Warriors took part in the day’s festivities with another relay team kicking things off as Eby, Stuhltrager, Miler, and Cadwalader finished the 200 medley in a 12th best time of 1:53.72. Hahn (2:13.94) and Jamie Nolt (2:20.40) then landed 13th and 26th, respectively, in the 200 IM with Hahn returning the next day to also race in the 100 freestyle where she finished 24th with a time of 54.93. Following up Friday in the 50 freestyle was Greenway whose 16th place time of 24.91 preceded her 17th place finish in the 100 butterfly. Miller (59.03) swam in the butterfly as well, finishing 11th, and also took 16th place in Saturday’s 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.07. Rounding out the field for Warwick was Stuhltrager (1:02.56) who also raced in the butterfly and finished 27th, and in the 500 freestyle, Eby (5:52.28), and Jenna Ober (5:32.62) who finished 17th and 24th, respectively.

On the other side, the boys’ team had two individual medalists but no relays as James Moll took sixth place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.2 and Theo Lance finished seventh in the 500 freestyle in 4:47.60 to get things rolling on Saturday. Following them were Ethan Hershey (1:03.82) with a 20th place finish in the 100 breaststroke and in the 400 freestyle relay, Lance, Moll, Ethan Hershey, and Brendan Stuhltrager, who posted a 13th best time of 3:20.19. On Friday, Lance placed 11th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.84 before Moll (2:00.82) and Hershey (2:10.47) took part in the 200 IM and finished, respectively, 12th and 32nd. Stuhltrager also finished with a time of 22.88 to take 24th in the 50 freestyle and swam a 15th best time of 54.66 in the 100 butterfly. BOWLING Friday and Saturday also marked the end of the season for Warwick on the

lanes as the Warriors took part in the individual and team events of the Eastern Regional Championships held at both Leisure and Dutch Lanes, but did not make it out of the qualifying round. In Friday’s individuals only the top 12 pin fall totals made the cut to advance into the final round. A trio of Warriors took part in the five game qualifier with Tyler Miller posting the highest series out of the three, a 29th best 1023, with games of 191, 240, 215, 174, and 203 followed by Carter Snavely (178, 194, 138, 176, 200-886) in 107th, and Chris Goldsborough (159, 157, 213, 157, 151837) in 151st. In the team event, only the top six advanced with Warwick coming in 25th. Matt Geib (463), Goldsborough (531), Robert Speer (488), Mille (518), and Snavely (602) combined for a standard pin fall of 2602 which, when totaled with the two Baker Set totals of 543 and 504, gave the Warriors a final team score of 3649.

Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee at its next Remember America Speaker Series event on Friday, April 17. The doors to the event venue, the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, will open at 6 p.m., with the pre-meal program beginning at 6:30 p.m. Gallery seating, for those who will attend only the featured presentation, will open at about 7:20 p.m. A VIP reception with Huckabee will be held prior to the evening’s festivities, with attendance by invitation only. Tickets to the reception are included with event sponsorship packages starting at the $2,500 level. The theme for the event is “Living Stones of Liberty … for Such a Time as This.” During the program, DCA fifth-grader Jessie Krieger will give her Headmaster’s Oration Competition-winning oration, titled “Liberty Outdated?” “Jessie’s title matched well with the Remember America Speaker Series mission,” commented DCA marketing director Lisa Becker. The event is expected to draw 1,500 to 1,600 attendees, certainly the largest audience Jessie has ever faced. “I’m really excited and really nervous all at the same time,” she said. DCA headmaster Michael Myers is looking forward to hosting Huckabee. “He is a great example of a Christian who took his Christian faith seriously,

even to the point of taking it to the political realm,” Myers commented. He described Huckabee as warm and welcoming, noting that those characteristics serve Huckabee well in his role as a pastor. “He’s a great exemplar of (passing on our faith to the next generation), and he can challenge us with credibility,” Myers added. “People tend to listen to him respectfully because he’s respectful.” The program will also include performances by DCA choral groups led by Lindsey Stauffer. While the singers are primarily in the upper grades, 15 members of the lower school’s Joyful Noise group will join them on stage. Additionally, a display of artifacts and media from the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center will be available for attendees to view. The center is opening on

Independence Mall in Philadelphia this year and is sponsored by the American Bible Society. As the April 17 event is marking the 10th anniversary of the Remember America Speaker Series, a special video presentation that includes clips of previous speakers will be part of the program. Becker related that DCA has hosted more than 18,000 people at series events. “We completely credit God with the ability to walk with the community,” Becker said. “We’re blessed and grateful that Lancaster has embraced this event and the school,” Myers added. Tickets and sponsorships for the Remember America Speaker Series event are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717285-2000.

MCC Slates Quilt Preview Quilters in Lancaster County and beyond have logged close to 20,000 hours as they handcrafted more than 100 quilts that will be displayed at this year’s quilt preview on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 5, 6 and 7. Preview hours will be March 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and March 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Held at Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) East Coast’s Material Resources Center, 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata, the preview is an opportunity to view the quilts slated for auction at the 64th annual Pennsylvania Relief Sale, which will take place in April. Unique to the preview this

year is a traveling quilt celebrating MCC’s centennial. Created by Pam Silverman, the quilt celebrates the history of the organization’s logo since 1941. The quilt will travel throughout North America, bringing awareness and raising funds for MCC’s ministries. Quilt viewers are invited to vote for their favorite quilt by donating money during the preview. Each cent will count as one vote and go toward the Pennsylvania Relief Sale’s My Coins Count collection. This year’s collection supports MCC’s education initiatives. MCC works with local partners around the world

to give children better chances to learn and grow and increases opportunities for youths through vocational training. Preview visitors can also shop at the Quilter’s Corner, featuring fabric, linens, spools and related items, as well as handmade rugs woven from repurposed textiles by volunteers. Used books will also be available for purchase by donation. In addition, tours of the Material Resources Center warehouse will be offered. The warehouse serves as a collection point in the U.S. for receiving, packing and shipping of material resources donated by people responding to aid requests from MCC partners

worldwide. Admission to the quilt preview is free. For more information about the preview, readers may call 717-733-2847. The 64th annual Pennsylvania Relief Sale will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 3 and 4, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The event will benefit MCC’s global relief, development and peacebuilding work. Last year’s sale raised more than $420,000 for MCC. Through the help of the community, The Church of Jesus Christ, and friends, Thomas was able to donate $1,005 in gift cards, as well as many assorted items, such as toiletries, blankets, pajamas, socks, and toys. Helping to celebrate the event was a gathering of past and present Boy Scout leaders from his church: Brandon Adams, Justin Cracroft, Dan Smith, Brent Davis,

Thomas presented the mentor pin to Alex Coombs for the support he offered Thomas to achieve the rank of Eagle, and he is also grateful to his parents for their strong support in obtaining this award. Ryan Miller of Lititz was selected as a Presidential Fellow for the 2019-20 academic year at Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove. Miller is a graphic design major in the Class of 2022. He is a graduate of Warwick High School. Students are nominated for the Presidential Fellows program by deans and department heads. Nominators choose students who they feel have the academic ability, enthusiasm, and interest to benefit from co-curricular discussions of literature, theater, and current events.

During the course of the year, the fellows are assigned two books to read and then discuss with Susquehanna president Jonathan D. Green and his wife, Lynn Buck, and selected faculty and staff. The experience culminates in a trip, usually to New York City or Washington, D.C., to attend a theater production and perhaps interact with an author or artist. The Presidential Fellows program was started by former Susquehanna president Joel Cunningham and his wife, Trudy, in 1982.
