Taking a seat at the table

MargaretThatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.

Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June

of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.

For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this position,” Zell said.

The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art,

At Hands-on House Museum, kids play, have fun - and learn

They’ve got a lot of cool things going on at the Hands-on House Children’s Museum of Lancaster, both inside and out, both individually and in group settings. To uching is fun, fun is learning, and learning is a key element in healthy development.

Located at 721 Landis Valley Road, the Hands-on House Children’s Museum of Lancaster is an energetic space for kids to be kids. It’s an engaging place where children from ages 2 through 10, and even younger, are encouraged to explore, be creative and be curious.

“ We want kids to develop a love for learning,” said Jim Bland, executive director of the Hands-on House Children’s Museum. “Everyone learns best by doing. Some are more auditory; some are more visual. The number one way to learn and retain is by teaching. In a freeform environment, kids are taking control. Then kids give instruction to grown-ups.”

The 8,000-square-foot Hands-on House Children’s Museum is broken down into about seven or eight different interactive play/learning areas. There, kids are mentally stimulated and presented with items that may be new or may be familiar.

culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”

For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”

Colin and Ethan’s upcoming adventure will provide opportunities for growth

Few things can help us grow like getting out of our comfort zones. And few things possess the power to get us out of our comfort zones like traveling.

Colin Peifer and Ethan Peifer, 17 and 16, respectively, are preparing to embark on a mission of mercy, hope and service. But it is also a mission of exploration and understanding and personal growth.

Colin and Ethan will be accompanying their father, Jared Peifer,

on a 10-day human service trip to Taiwan from Saturday, March 18, to Tuesday, March 28. The journey will be made in association with the nonprofit organization Youth With A Mission, Caribbean Partners Inc., whose stated purpose is “To know God and to make Him known.”

The former Lititz-area teenagers, who now reside in Montana, have been on family mission trips before. But this one will be Colin and Ethan’s first in their late teens.

Hands-on House

Out of doors, young explorers are treated to a recently enlarged learning playground called “Mason’s Active Adventure Garden,” where the use of “outside voices” signals a different sort of appreciation for learning.

But Hands-on House is so much more. It also offers art classes, story times, STEM programs, reading instruction, camps and outreach programs.

“Early learning gives kids a better shot when they get into school,” said Bland. “They get a little more familiar with the structure, with the attention span needed. Kind of like when they get into school they can say, ‘I’ve been learning.’”

Approximately 63,000 visitors are hosted by the Hands-

on House Museum of Lancaster each year, and about half of them are children. Bland estimated that 75% of those guests originate from Lancaster County.

Separate admission fees have been set for children ages 2 through 10 and for adults. Kids age 2 and under are admitted free. The Handson Children’s Museum boasts about 17,000 members.

“From a value standpoint, adults and children can easily spend two hours here, and when the weather is nice, another 45 minutes outside,” said Bland. “That’s a lot for the money. There’s a big variety of things to do, and we’re always adding something new. As a child, there’s really something here for everyone.”

Spring

Through the cooperation of the Junior League of Lancaster, similar organizations and interested individuals, the Hands-on House Children’s Museum was established in 1985. The current structure was built around the turn of the century, and the museum and its exhibits were moved across the street from the former 1,500-square-foot building.

Over the years, the exhibits have changed and been upgraded and modernized. But the Hands-on House’s mission of “learning through play” has never wavered.

“ We want more diversification in our visitors,” said Bland. “We want to add more value to our admission price. We want to expand our mission. We’re trying to develop

At the table

Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”

Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”

For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”

That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”

As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is

the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary f or the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts. Grove and her husband enjoy spending time with their seven children and eight grandchildren, and Grove is active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, where she will serve as president beginning in 2025. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “ very competitive family f ootball games.” Green and her husband are raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.

As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to

humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”

Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves. “Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”

And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”

Ephrata Cloister to celebrate Charter Day Auction frompg 3

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, and the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) will celebrate the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s 342nd birthday on Charter Day, Sunday, March 12, by offering free admission from noon to 4 p.m. This special day marks the granting of the charter for Pennsylvania to William Penn in 1681. In 1732, German immigrant Conrad Beissel established the Ephrata Cloister along the banks of the Cocalico Creek in Lancaster

County. This unique religious community epitomized William Penn’s “Holy Experiment” as an example of religious tolerance, creative expression, and intellectual freedom.

The original buildings of Historic Ephrata Cloister hold many objects made and used at the community in the 1700s, and experienced interpreters will help visitors to explore the rich history of Ephrata at their own pace during this program. Visitors are encouraged to start their visit in

the Visitor Center with a short video that will help set the stage for their exploration.

Ephrata Cloister is known as the home of the first documented female music composers in North America, and the Ephrata Cloister Chorus will highlight some of these women’s hymns during performances at 2 and 3 p.m. in the 1743 Meetinghouse. Visitors may also stop by the museum store, which offers a locally made handcrafted items, books, ceramics and more.

number of Primitives by Kathy Collaborative Collection pieces, handmade cards, jewelry and a gift certificate for a framed original painting from the gallery. The winning paintbrush will be announced at the end of the program.

In addition, two “Fund-ANeed” opportunities will be available that will go into making the Lancaster City Studio space better equipped for its needs. The first FundA-Need item consists of large canvases so that the Heart artists have opportunities to express their creativity on a larger platform independently or collaboratively. The second Fund-A-Need opportunity will

help to purchase a high-quality projector and screen, which will be used as an instructional tool and art-making tool in the studio. For more details on the Fund-A-Need items, to register for a bidder number and to purchase tickets for the in-person event, visit www.FriendshipArt.net/Bid.

The ticket price includes refreshments and a special program featuring the Heart artists. Those who are unable to attend the in-person event can still register to bid during the online silent auction. By providing both a phone number and an email address, auction participants will be notified when they are outbid. By providing payment information up front, auction participants will have a faster and smoother checkout process at the end of the night. Those who are attending in person must register separately for a bidder number.

Friendship Heart Studio is a day program that celebrates personalities and talent

through free expression and collaboration. More than 50 artists work with professionals and volunteers to create masterpieces while developing a sense of purpose, value and freedom. The studio realizes its vision of “Expressing Capabilities” by promoting artistic skills and self-expression through various techniques while utilizing both traditional and unconventional media.

Friendship Community, a faith-based nonprofit organization, has been supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism since 1972. It offers two arts day programs, a home-based service program and 24 residential homes within Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

For more details about the auction, contact Calista White at 717-656-2466, ext. 1155, or cwhite@friendship community.net. Readers may also follow the organization on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

At some point you realize it’s not just about you. What they’re picking up on is that it’s an opportunity to go somewhere else and get out of your comfort zone. To have them choose that makes us smile.”
