GOTR - A Decade Of Impact Spring 5K Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash
In the 10 years since the Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster-Lebanon council was founded, the organization has racked up some significant statistics. “We’ve had 12,800 girls cross the finish line,” said executive director Carrie Johnson, referring to both completing the program’s culminating 5K and finishing the GOTR 20-lesson curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. In addition, those teams completed 972 community impact projects. Currently, there is a team in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon, and more than 90 teams will take part in the current session. But for Johnson, the impact goes beyond mere numbers. As the local
organization celebrates its milestone anniversary, the staff is focused on a growth mindset that is about forging stronger bonds, not only with the girls who take part in the program, but also with their families, coaches, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and anyone involved with GOTR. “We want to deepen those relationships so that (all participants) are asking, ‘How can I be more involved? How can I be part of this mission?’” explained Johnson. GOTR of Lancaster-Lebanon has already reaped fruit from employing this

In early 2019, the council was informed that the group had been chosen from more than 200 other GOTR locations as the recipient of the GOTR PaceSetters Award. The award was given

According to Noel Johns, human resources recruiter for the LancasterLebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU 13) Extended School Year (ESY) program, the summer program offers employment not only for special education teachers, paraprofessionals, speech therapists, occupational and physical therapists, and nurses, but also for high school graduates who are considering going into the social work or education field. “We need people who have an interest and a heart and a love for working with students with special needs,” said Johns. To help fill the job roster for the fiveweek program, which will run from Monday, June 24, through Thursday, July 25, IU 13 will hold an ESY Job Fair on Wednesday, March 20, at the Conference and Training Center, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, from 3 to 6 p.m. Most
According to Michelle Harbaugh, one table at the annual Entertainers’ Swap Meet is reserved strictly for exchanges. “It’s purely swap,” said Harbaugh, director of Steps to Success Early Childhood Education and Care in Leola. “The first year, we had a three-way swap. No money was exchanged, and everybody was happy.” The bring-something-take-something table is just one facet of the Entertainers’ Swap Meet, now in its sixth year. This year’s event, which will be open to the public for the first time, will be held in the cafeteria of the Upper Leacock Township Building, where Steps to Success is located, at 56 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 30. Emerald Center Program from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
The St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration held at the Emerald Center (The E) is designed for the entertainment of those who enjoy the sounds associated with the musical era that began in 1935. But Mollie Divet, Access to Opportunities assistant director with The E, is equally as excited about what will happen when the music stops. “(When the band) takes a break, (we will) talk about the (Access to Opportunities) After-School Program,” said Divet. The second St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration, which will
benefit the after-school program, will be held at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 16, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the ballroom. Big band music provided by Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (CBJO), heavy hors d’oeuvres, and green beverages will all be featured at the fundraiser. Divet laid out the evening’s schedule by noting that doors will open at 7 p.m. and that background music will be played while appetizers are served. “We will make an introduction and (explain) where the proceeds will go,” said Divet, who noted that the band will begin to play at

8 p.m. During the band’s break at 9 p.m., attendees will learn about the Access to Opportunities program and be given a chance to donate. Individuals will receive a carnation colored to designate a specific donation amount. Divet noted that carnations will be colored green and gold. The band will then resume playing until 10 p.m. CBJO is known for its repertoire of American big band music performances that aim to bring nostalgia and celebrate the nation’s history. CBJO will perform music associated with wellknown favorites including Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, and other great artists of that era. In addition, a dancing group known as The Ladybirds will perform. “(The Ladybirds) will encourage others to get up and dance,” said Divet, who added that dancing will be strongly encouraged this year. Organizers hope to have members of the local ballroom dance and swing dance communities present as well. The Access to Opportunities After-School Program currently serves nearly 30 students in grades two through four from Nitrauer and Brecht elementary schools. “The students come Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.,” said Divet, who explained that the students are served a hot meal provided by a partnership with the Central
Pennsylvania Food Bank. The program includes yoga and other physical activities. Academically, there has been a focus on literacy. “We had education students from Millersville University doing one-on-one literacy intervention, and the students loved that,” shared Divet. While the program has emphasized literacy, Divet noted that providing an all-inclusive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) component has been a goal of the program. The E is working with the North Museum in a partnership to provide a STEM program to the students. Funds raised at the St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration will help cover the costs of that program. Divet also hopes to raise the funds necessary to potentially hold a two-week summer program. Although the program would probably focus on literacy, a number of other activities could be included, such as yoga, team-building exercises, nutritional education, and more. Tickets for the dance may be obtained by searching “St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration,” on Eventbrite. Tickets may also be purchased in person at The E. Pictured on front: Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (left photo) will play at the St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration at the Emerald Center (The E) on March 16 to help fund a STEM curriculum for the Access to Opportunities After-School Program (right photo), also held at The E. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the band will begin to play at 8 p.m.

Girls On The Run from pg 1 these are a two-year program involving nine Elizabethtown College students who have completed a service project with the program, and the production of the GOTR documentary “Run With Your Heart,” which was created in 2018. The program also worked with a local author on a book that is used to supplement the organization’s curriculum and has partnered with Penn Medicine/LG Health to showcase the GOTR participants in various presentations. The curriculum and training session culminates in the GOTR spring 5K, when the participants complete a local course with a buddy. This year’s run will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Sponaugle-Williamson Field, Franklin & Marshall College, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. “We encourage the community to join us,” said Johnson of the run, which is open to the public and offers a fairly flat course in Lancaster city. The run will start on College Avenue and turn left on West James Street and then right on North Water Street. Runners will then turn right on West Lemon Street, which becomes Buchanan Avenue. Participants will proceed right onto State Street and go right again on West James Street. The course will turn left on
Race Avenue before taking a left on West Clay Street. Runners will then turn left on State Street and left again on West Frederick Street before returning to the Franklin & Marshall campus and ending on the school track. Funds raised by the event support scholarships for girls who need financial assistance to participate in the GOTR program. More than 6,000 girls have received this assistance from the LancasterLebanon program. The atmosphere prior to a GOTR 5K is always unique because it includes prerace primping for the girls, but this year, Johnson said that runners will see evidence of the 10-year celebration on T-shirts and through activities. The organization will also hold an Evening of Gratitude event on Friday, March 22, to celebrate those individuals who have contributed to the program’s success. “ We just want to say thank you for making this possible,” said Johnson. Community members who wish to take part in the run may register at www.gotrlancaster.org. T-shirts will be available to those who register by Tuesday, April 23. Online registration will close on Thursday, May 16. On-site registration will be available on Friday, May 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Franklin & Marshall College and on the day of the event from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church of the Brethren, on Tuesday, March 19, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. The church is located at 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim. North Star Initiative, a Christian ministry, will provide information on how it supports women who are survivors of domestic sex trafficking by providing physical, psychological,
emotional, and spiritual care through a Christcentered focus. Knowing the need for holistic and collaborative care for adult, female survivors, the ministry has opened a restoration home, The Harbor, in Lancaster County. Classes during the program are provided for children from infants to prekindergartners. Readers may contact Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information, including a copy of this year’s schedule.
to noon on Mondays through Thursdays, but one location will hold a full-day program. Classes will not be held on Thursday, July 4. According to Katie Schultz, ESY program supervisor, the program is for students determined to be eligible based on their individualized education plans and their local school district’s team. Students who are matriculating within the IU 13 go through a similar process. “Students who are eligible are selected for referral based on regression and recoupment skills, said Schultz. “(Eligible students) receive instruction in areas where their teams have determined they need to maintain to be successful in the next school year, she stated, adding that students in kindergarten through 12th grade and up to age 21 in certain circumstances will be served by the program. “We keep the (student’s) placement the same as during the school year, so if they’re in a selfcontained classroom, we keep that the same and by grade level and location, explained Schultz. In 2018, ESY served 600 students, but Schultz noted that this year more than 1,000
students may take part because districts that previously ran their own programs have decided to partner with the IU 13. Johns stated that the expanded program will mean that increased staff must be hired. “To support the number of classrooms and students, we will need more than 400 staff members, said Johns, who added that although a number of IU 13 staff members will probably sign on, more employees will be needed. “It’s a nice summer job, and it’s an opportunity to get some experience, shared Johns. “We provide a lot of training prior to the onset of ESY on working with students on the autism spectrum, those in multiple disabilities classrooms, first aid, and CPR, she said, adding, “We make sure we have staff that is a mix of experienced with newer staff. Readers who are interested in more information may visit www.iu13.org. “When I picked up the script (for a read-through), I laughed multiple times,” Promise Players community Christian theater group director Doreen Creighton said of choosing this spring’s play, “Mobile Home Sweet Home” by Pat Cook. “There’s a lot of sarcasm, and Tim (Strawser) pulls it off very well.” At the center of it all is Strawser’s character, Loff DuVall, who has run the Hampton Court trailer park with his wife, May June (Linda Ross), for more years than he can count. Loff is hoping to take May June on a vacation to escape the zaniness of the residents. Vonell Rafferty (Laura Scott-Wise) tries multiple income schemes, the latest of which is searching for treasure with a metal detector. Lydia Spagway (Melody Risser) needs help removing her grandchild’s hand from where it is stuck in a toilet. Rhonda DeFalco (Wanda Jenkins) just wants to gossip, and Goose Halford (Ken Hess) tells long stories, such as how his grandpa has a metal plate in his head. “The kids used to catch him asleep and put ‘frigerator magnets on his forehead,” Goose relates to Loff. Compounding the stress is a
request from Loff ’s future daughter-in-law, Anne (Christine Tedesco), who wants to film a reality television show in Hampton Court. And, to add insult to injury, Etta Frobisher (Creighton) has it in for Hampton Court. “She’s being nitpicky and trying to find anything to get this shut down,” Creighton said of her character. “She’s bossy and hungry for power. She’s just a bully.” Frobisher is not any kinder to her younger sister, Edith Maxwell, who is played by Creighton’s real-life older sister, Karen Ungemach. Ungemach is also a volunteer at the organization that will be benefited by the proceeds from the show’s performances. Formed in 2016 in response to a need to go beyond offering emergency shelter, Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) provides services to end the cycle of poverty while transforming the lives of families and individuals. Using the Housing First model, ECHOS assists individuals and families experiencing homelessness, at-risk of homelessness, or in need of services who are already connected with the Elizabethtown area, including Elizabethtown, Rheems, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown.

held at 11 a.m. Tables, food, and auctioning will all be by donation. There is no admission fee. “It is fun,” shared Harbaugh. “It’s (a gathering of) musicians, face painters, jugglers, clowns, and circus (performers).” Harbaugh added that in the past entertainers have brought musical instruments, speakers, amplifiers, microphones, and even all the apparatus to perform as a disc jockey. “Those who have large illusions (to sell) may bring photos of them,” noted Harbaugh. Each year, organizers ask participants, who come from four states in addition to Pennsylvania, what steps might be taken to improve the event. Based on suggestions, the auction portion was added last year, and this year the public is being invited. “Anyone who participates in the auction may donate a percentage (of the money they make to Steps to Success),” said Harbaugh, who added that funds raised will be used to purchase classroom supplies. Food items that will be available by donation at the swap meet will include doughnuts, hot dogs, chips, snacks, beverages, and baked goods. Along with opportunities to buy, sell, and swap entertainment supplies and equipment, the event, which is also billed as a “micro convention in Amish country,” is a chance for entertainers to network. Harbaugh said that aspiring entertainers are welcome. “(The swap meet is) a good place to get supplies or (connect) with groups,” she stated. More information about the swap meet is available by searching for “Entertainers’ Swap Meet” on Facebook. Selection for this award is based on the individual’s scholastic record, extracurricular activities, and community service, with emphasis on demonstrated leadership abilities. Prospective college students who may be applying for financial aid this year are encouraged to consider the new PA Forward Student Loan Program. The PA Forward State Grant Program provides low-cost, alternative student loans for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as loans for parent borrowers. The program is designed to complement other forms of student aid, such as the PA State Grant Program and low-cost federal loans. Pennsylvania students who need help paying for college after exhausting their eligibility for gift aid and low-cost federal student loans are encouraged to apply. Additionally, borrowers who are in repayment and want to combine their debt after graduation to outstanding student debts and achieve a lower monthly payment can benefit from a PA Forward Refinance Loan. PHEAA is the lender and servicer of the loans, with taxexempt financing provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. PA Forward participants can borrow up to the total cost of attendance with competitively low interest rates. There are immediate credit approvals and flexible repayment options, with no application or origination fees. Borrowers can get discounted interest rates by enrolling in an automatic direct debit repayment program and simply by graduating. Borrowers can receive a .25 percent interest rate reduction for enrolling in an automatic direct debit program and an additional .50 percent interest rate reduction for achieving successful graduation. Borrowers also benefit from a six-month grace period after graduation before the first payment is due. This allows borrowers time to get their finances in order, including time to find a job, before repayment begins. Borrowers who take full advantage of the program’s benefits could save thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. PHEAA encourages students and their families to exhaust all eligibility for grants and scholarships before considering a student loan. When borrowing is necessary, students should first apply for low-cost federal student loans before turning to an alternative student loan, which may have higher interest rates. To help students make informed choices about their higher education funding plans that can prevent unnecessary or excessive borrowing, PHEAA created www.my smartborrowing.org. This free resource helps users understand how different career, school, and financial decisions made during the college planning process can influence their total cost of an education and their ability to repay any student loans after graduation.

Potpie Dinner To Support Mission Outreach impoverished area that is still recovering and in need of help,” Ruhl shared. The team, consisting of teenagers and adults, plans to help with construction and other odd jobs as needed. Fundraisers like the potpie dinner are a key part of the Mission Outreach Team’s ability to serve locally, nationally, and internationally. While the events serve to offset the costs of travel and material assistance, the fundraiser gatherings are also a way for the local community to gather in fellowship and fun. “(The potpie dinner) really is a nice event where people can come and relax and just enjoy a good homemade meal and some fellowship with friends and family,” Ruhl said. “Folks can also get to know Ruhl’s Church and see what we’re about.” For additional details on the chicken potpie dinner, readers The Ruhl’s United Methodist Church Mission Outreach Team, pictured on a previous missions may visit www.ruhlschurch.org or trip, will host its sixth annual chicken potpie dinner fundraiser on Saturday, March 23. call 717-665-3400.

Limitless homemade chicken potpie will be on the menu at the Ruhl’s United Methodist Church Mission Outreach Team’s sixth annual fundraising dinner, to be held at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, March 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. or until sold out. Separate costs have been set for adults and for children ages 6 to 12; children age 5 and under may eat for free. In addition to all-you-can-eat potpie, meals will include green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, and a choice from a variety of homemade desserts. Assorted beverages will be available, as well. Attendees may eat on-site or take a meal to go. Quarts of potpie will also be available for purchase to take home. According to organizer Gail Ruhl, mission team members get together in the morning before the event to cook up the potpie, which
includes 150 pounds of roaster chicken, potatoes, and homemade noodles as part of the famous church recipe. The team knows that “many hands make light work,” and organizers help the process move along. “Curt Diffenderfer is our go-to guy,” Ruhl mentioned. “He is the one who leads the kitchen and makes sure everything is running smoothly.” Funds raised from the event will help the mission work of the church in myriad ways. Ruhl noted that some monies are earmarked for local organizations such as food banks, while additional funds are sent to worldwide missions. A focus for this year’s fundraiser is the Mission Outreach Team’s upcoming trip to Clendenin, W.Va., from June 15 to 22. The team plans to travel to the town in the Appalachia area along the Elk River, where participants will help rebuild several homes and buildings affected by catastrophic flooding in 2016. “This is a more

Lancaster Farmland Trust’s (LFT) Pedal to Preserve (P2P) bike ride will change form in 2019. For more than 20 years, cyclists have enjoyed scenic rides of 6, 20 or 50 miles over Lancaster County’s rural roadways as part of LFT’s charity bike ride. This year, though, LFT will hold a virtual event that encourages riders to set out on
their own favorite loop around the county. Along the way, LFT is asking riders to snap pictures of the classic Lancaster County scenery and share them on social media. Details for the virtual event are still being finalized. Readers may visit www.lancasterfarmlandtrust.org in early April for more information and to register to participate.
