Mayor Tim Snyder is the heart and soul of Lititz

Tim Snyder is a humble, civicminded, socially oriented gentleman.

Under his watch, the town of Lititz has thrived. But Snyder does not deserve all the credit, nor does he seek it.

He fully understands that the borough’s success is the result of cooperation and collaboration between like-minded people like himself.

More than just some figurehead, Snyder is an active mayor, a strong mayor, a proactive one, a promoter of the town’s charms, people and positives.

“I love to promote Lititz,” said Snyder. “I think the best thing about Lititz is the people. They make this town special. From the retailers to the churches to the service clubs to the residents, everyone’s trying to do what’s best for the community.”

Snyder’s been elected three times, and he’s currently in his 10th year of serving Lititz as its mayor.

During that time, Lititz has experienced a notable and unexpected amount of growth.

Prior to that, Snyder had served on Lititz Borough Council for nine years, four of which as its president.

“Right now, the state of the borough is good,” said Snyder. “Over the last 10 years, Lititz has become a destination through the work of Venture Lititz. Main Street has been updated and we have a great downtown business district.”

As mayor, Snyder works closely with the borough council, oversees the Lititz police force, represents the town at Lancaster County Mayors Association functions and attends Pennsylvania State Mayors’ Association meetings. When it comes to communications in the borough, Snyder is the face of Lititz.

“You have to understand that Lititz is a tremendous community, and our borough council has always been phenomenal, with a lot of professional people on it,” said Snyder.

“And they’re all running in the same direction. All of our public officials

are very committed to having a wonderful community. Every time we meet, it’s about ‘how can we make Lititz a better place to live and work and play?’”

W hile Lititz is in good shape overall and its prospects for continued success appear bright, it is not perfect. Two of the biggest challenges currently facing the borough are the availability of affordable housing and the fact that there simply isn’t a lot of room for expansion in its 2.3-square-mile area, which is home to about 9,300 residents.

“ We don’t have a whole lot of room for development,” said Snyder. “Our challenge is to continue to provide services to our residents efficiently. When opportunities come up to make a positive change, we want to pursue them. We want to make sure everything’s going to run well in the next 20 years. We want to have open communications with our community.”

LCS performers can learn from “Mary Poppins”

The story of “Mary Poppins” is full of messages of hope and growth and wonder - the kinds of life lessons kids can get from extracurricular activities like theater.

Lititz Christian School’s theater arts department will present its interpretation of the classic musical tale “Mary Poppins” at Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St., Lititz, on Friday, March 31, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 1, at 6:30 p.m. Both family-friendly performances will feature an all-grades cast and crew.

Bringing joy to hospitalized children

“If you break it down, the musical is about a disjointed family that needs to come back together,” said Jennifer Balmer, LCS’ director of “Mary Poppins.” “Mary Poppins empowers the other characters to fix the problems themselves. There are certainly elements of magic to it. Mary Poppins lives to serve, which fits into our school’s mission. She’s a really cool character, and she’s tough.”

More than 50 students in kindergarten through 12th grade are involved in the production, as actors or stage crew members.

It’s no fun for a child to be in the hospital, but thanks to Northwest EMS, pediatric hospital stays are a little happier. Northwest EMS collects toys for Child Life, an initiative that provides new toys to children who are hospitalized.

Northwest EMS started the partnership with Child Life in 2021. “Our office manager, Luci, had a granddaughter in the hospital in November and December of 2020, and visits were limited,” explained Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for

Northwest EMS. “Her granddaughter, Taylor, had a lot of anxiety about being there, but every day that Taylor was in the hospital, members of the Child Life team would visit her. They played cards with her, did puzzles, played board games, and they developed a friendship with her.” Taylor got to keep every toy and game she received during her stay.

“The Child Life team members would come in and distract her during procedures, and their presence made the biggest difference for her,” Shenk said. The then-10-year-old mentioned Child Life to her grandmother and

suggested it might be a project Northwest EMS would like to take on.

All four Northwest EMS stations - in Maytown, Brickerville, Elizabethtown and Manheim - participate in the program. Toys are collected year-round at the stations, and Shenk delivers the collection to Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital throughout the year.

“Doing something like Child Life is important to us, because we want to support our community,” Shenk shared. She noted that the stations are always accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys for children age 17 and under. “It’s easy to pick up a toy to donate, and people should not just think about what their child would like, but think about something

any child would like,” she recommended. “The dollar store and other discount stores are excellent places to get activity books or craft supplies.”

Other suggested donations include board books, Legos, dolls, DVDs, video games and Play-Doh.

“W hen someone drops off a donation, they should be sure to tell the person who receives it at the station that it’s for Child Life,” Shenk stated.

Northwest EMS stations are located in Maytown, 186 Rock Point Road; Brickerville, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz; Elizabethtown, 380 W. Bainbridge St.; and Manheim, 60 W. Colebrook St.

“Mary Poppins” frompg 1

Balmer estimated that the theater arts group as a whole has invested about 150 man hours of time in pulling it off.

Open auditions for the play were conducted during the first week of January, and the cast and crew has been conducting four or five rehearsals every week since. The performance features about 20 songs and musical numbers.

“A lot of the lead roles are handled by seniors, but some of the students are brand new to theater,” said Balmer. “They’re wonderful individuals who are hard-working and enjoy learning the theater.

They really put themselves out there. They come with willing spirits.”

Starring in the lead role of Mary Poppins is senior Kyla Mason, while fellow 12thgrader Brennan Lyon is tackling the role of Bert. The Banks children, Michael and Jane, are being portrayed by fifth-graders Hayden Martin and Sierra McCracken, respectively. Senior Tyler Velkly plays the role of George Banks, while senior Wynne Coolbeth holds down the role of Winifred Banks.

Balmer is assisted by music director Lisa Huber and

Talk to focus on pretzel making

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) announces will offer its next program, “Mindful Pretzel Consumption,” will be held on Wednesday, March 22, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata.

Jill Marie Thomas, greatgreat-granddaughter of Julius Sturgis and daughter of Tom

Sturgis, will speak on the history and methods of pretzel making and the life of an early pretzel baker in Lititz. The program is free and open to the public. The parking lot and entrance are located in the alley to the rear of the building. For more information, visit www.cocalicovalleyhs.org or call 717-733-1616.

senior stage manager Grace Gerard.

“There are a lot of logistics, a lot of planning, a lot of patience that goes into it,” said Balmer. “Initially, I really want the students to understand the plot, and it takes a lot of hours to learn the songs. When you put that many hours into it, you better like it. If the attitude of the show is upbeat, it permeates into your personality. I wanted it to be a family show. I wanted a show that could bring people together.”

Typically, the Lititz Christian theater arts department produces one play every school year, usually in the

spring. LCS’ past shows have included “The Importance of Being Earnest”; “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”; and “Annie.”

“Theater builds community, and I’m all about community,” said Balmer. “So much cross-curriculum happens in the arts, but especially on stage. There are just so many potential applications that can be applied to the performing arts - group work, working with a partner, teamwork, project-based learning.”

Tickets for Lititz Christian School’s “Mary Poppins” can be purchased at www.lititz christian.net or at the door the night of the performance.

Born and raised

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400

young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more

information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarmland trust.org.

Farming can be a back-breaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.

The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Northeast will hold its inaugural Special Needs Egg Hunt on Wednesday, March 22, at 5:30 p.m. on the grounds of Listrak, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. All children with special needs age 18 and under and their siblings are invited to attend.

The hunt will be divided into four areas: one for people with mobility issues; an area f or participants with visual impairment, which will use beeping eggs; a “quiet and calm” area; and a traditional large group scramble.

The event is free and open

to the public, and parking is available. Participants should bring their own baskets. The egg hunt will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside in the case of inclement weather. Guest author Sally McKinney will read stories aloud and share her new book.

Preregistration is required. For more information and to register, visit https://eggstra hunt.splashthat.com/. Information about this event is also available by emailing allison@nowican.org.

Based in Orem, Utah, Now I Can focuses on the intensive

model of physical therapy, which is used to treat children with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders. Therapists use various interventions and extended therapy times - usually four hours per day, five days per week, as opposed to traditional therapy sessions of 45 minutes or less.

Now I Can Northeast serves clients throughout the northeast region of Pennsylvania. The center has operated out of space in the Listrak headquarters since 2022. To learn more, visit https://nowican .org/pennsylvania-location.

Fairmount posts events

Pastor Robert Gerhart from Bally will come to Fairmount on Thursday, March 23, at 2 p.m. to tell the story of Mennonite missionary Annie Clemmer Funk, using special chalks, lighting, and music. The 45-minute program will take place in the Farm Crest Community Room Chapel, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on the Fairmount campus.

Funk had served for six years as a teacher in India and was returning to her parents’ home near Bally on the Titanic. She had celebrated her 38th birthday on the Titanic just two days before dying after its fateful collision with an iceberg. The presentation will take the audience back to Funk’s Pennsylvania homestead and then to her missionary activity in India before concluding with her

journey home in April 1912. The program is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required. Directions can be found at www.fairmounthomes.org.

In addition, a ham and cheese sandwich fundraiser, held jointly with the local Youth for Truth group, is now underway at Fairmount. The ham and cheese sandwiches may be ordered through Friday, March 31.

Orders may be placed by calling 717-354-1800 or stopping by the front desk at Fairmount. The sandwiches will be available for pickup on Saturday, April 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. just inside the front door of the Wheat Ridge building. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used for the benefit of Fairmount residents in financial need.

Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such products poses an

additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems.

Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.

W omen of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, March 21, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

In a talk titled “Choose Jesus: The Honest-to-God Way to Grieve,” Lisa Hosler will share her experiences of losing her husband three years ago. She will share how Jesus was her role model and how people can learn to talk to, help, and befriend others going through the grieving process.

Hosler was born and raised in Lancaster County, graduated from Lancaster Bible College, and has served as president of Align Life Ministries for the past 38 years. She was the primary caregiver for her husband, Ron, during his 13month battle with brain cancer, and she experienced the highs and lows of that journey with Jesus.
