Tracy Wagner, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) drama director, chose the musical “Big Fish” for the school’s spring production because she loves the story, which is based on the Daniel Wallace novel of the same name, but she also chose it for the message it holds. “I want (audience members) to hold tight to their family relationships,” she said. “If there’s anything that’s broken or strained, (I hope they) try to heal that (because) we don’t know when our last moment will be.” “Big Fish,” a tale of extraordinary proportions, will be staged at LCHS,
650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, March 28 through 30, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. Wagner noted that students will sell daffodils during performance breaks to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. “During the show, there is one moment when (audience members will have a chance to) hold up the daffodils they purchased and be a part of the show,” explained Wagner. The play focuses on Will Bloom, played by Kameron Garcia, who is struggling with his relationship with his father, Edward, a former traveling salesman, played by Tony Dominguez. As Will Lancaster Catholic High School student cast members of “Big Fish” are preparing to stage the See “Big Fish” pg 5 show at the school from March 28 through 31.

Ashley Gage will play Anne, the red-haired orphan from Prince Edward Island, when “Anne of Green Gables” is presented at Cavod Theatre on April 5 to 7 and April 12 to 14.
“The cool thing about live theater and ‘Anne of Green Gables’ specifically (is that) Anne comes to life again for each generation,” said Cordell Huyard, creative director of Cavod Theatre. “A grandparent, a parent, a grandchild, and even a greatgrandchild can come together and enjoy the show. (They can) have some laughs, shed some tears, and go home realizing how blessed they are to have their family.” Huyard looks forward to seeing audiences introduced to the red-haired orphan from Prince Edward Island when “Anne of Green Gables,” adapted from the 1908 book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, will be presented at the theater, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, April 5 and 12; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, April 6 and 13; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, April 7 and 14. See Cavod Theatre pg 4
A Showcase Of Utilitarian Art Redware Display Opens At Landis Valley Museum By Ann Mead Ash
After King Charles II granted him a charter for land in 1681, William Penn invited people with specific skills to come to live and work in the area, which he had named Pennsylvania. “When William Penn held a call for laborers to come over, potters were on his list,” explained Jennifer Royer, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum curator. Into the late 1800s, much pottery was redware, earthenware vessels and dishes made from clay with a high iron content that turned the pottery red when pieces were fired in a kiln. Redware Exhibit from pg 1 To tell the tale of potters who made redware in Pennsylvania, Royer has organized “Thrown, Fired, and Glazed: The Redware Traditions From Pennsylvania and Beyond.” Part one of the exhibit opened on March 10 at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, and it will remain open through Tuesday, Dec. 31. Part two, which will feature the rest of the pieces Royer has gathered from the Barnes Foundation, The Hershey Story, Winterthur Museum, and Landis Valley’s own collection, will open in March of 2020. Royer said that when she began to plan the 2019 exhibit, she realized that redware had not been displayed in the museum for quite some time. “I started to talk to institutions and private collectors,” recalled Royer. “We were finding wonderful pieces, and the collection was getting bigger.” It was too big, in fact, to display all the pieces in one year, hence the two-year, two-part exhibit. Royer noted that one catalog will be published for the two parts. Royer explained that one reason so many potters came to Pennsylvania was in the makeup of the earth. “The clay here is similar to what was found in Europe,” she said, adding that most potters were also farmers. “They would farm, and then, when they had downtime, they would make pottery,” said Royer. “They had all the clay on their land, and redware was cheap to make.” Each town had its own potter throwing pieces on a wheel or making them in molds. “When you knew he was going to open his kiln, you would go to his place and pick from the kiln what you needed,” explained Royer. “You could also tell him ahead of time what you might want so he could make it.” Not all potters stayed put in one town, however. Part of the display includes pieces by Willoughby Smith, a potter who took

Lancaster County, along with 12 other southeastern Pennsylvania counties, is currently under quarantine for the spotted lanternfly. All residents and businesses must comply with the regulations, and a spotted lanternfly permit is required for any business working within and/or moving goods in and out of the quarantine zone. This includes farm businesses such as nurseries, greenhouses, woodworking shops, and others that sell materials that could contain eggs or
orders and even sold pottery door-to-door. Smith, who is associated with Berks and Montgomery counties, had a special carrying case filled with his flower pot samples, which fit into the bag like nesting dolls. “Smith would go around (from house to house) and ask what size pot (a customer) wanted and sell them,” said Royer. In addition to the flower pots, the display features cups, jugs, and a food mold similar to a bundt cake pan, along with a photo of Smith with one of his apprentices. Redware items, which are individually made, range from simple utilitarian plates and bowls to unusual pitchers shaped like heads. Platters were often decorated using one of two techniques. “(Potters) put glaze down on (the item), and then they scratch through it (using a technique) called sgraffito,” said Royer, who explained that the scratches allowed the natural red color to show through. Slip decoration is a technique that creates lines and writing on pieces. Decorations often include birds and flowers. “Redware has similarities to other Pennsylvania German (creations) such as fraktur and blanket chests,” said Royer. “Pennsylvania Germans love colors and designs,” she added. “Just look at their quilts.” Use of redware was not confined to the kitchen and dining room. On display in the exhibit are a chicken waterer, a bee skep, footrests for a stove, and a variety of decorative items, including a piece in the form of a tiny cabin that is really a bank. Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum encompasses 100 acres in Manheim Township. The goal of the nonprofit organization is to collect, preserve, and interpret Pennsylvania German community history from 1740 to 1940. More information about the museum may be found by visiting www.landisvalleymuseum .org or by calling 717-569-0401.

Jane Wolf will be the presenter at the Lititz Art Association meeting on Tuesday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. She will speak about how to use inks and high-flow acrylics with a variety of mediums and textural materials. The program is free and open to the public. Wolf has worked in various mediums both during her schooling and during her teaching years in Maryland and the School District of Lancaster, where she taught both junior high and high school. She has
worked in printmaking, watercolor, stained glass, and acrylic painting. When she retired in 2012, one of her goals was to have the time to create art. She connected with Julie Youtz Rupp, a teacher at the York Art Association, who introduced her to a different way of painting with acrylics. Wolf uses a nonpourous substrate, free-flowing paints, and lots of water, along with other textural materials, such as molding paste, tar gel, plastic wrap and wax paper. Wolf sometimes uses canvas with the fluid acrylics, as it gives a different effect.
The purpose of the Lititz Art Association is to foster fine arts and to cooperate with other associations having similar purposes. Membership is open to all interested persons 18 years of age or older. Meetings are held the last Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library. Ashley Gage plays Anne Shirley, an 11year-old orphan who is accidentally sent to live with an elderly sister and brother - Marilla, played by Melissa Ticen, and Matthew Cuthbert, played by Caleb Zimmerman - at their Green Gables farm on Prince Edward Island. Because the Cuthberts originally wanted a boy to help out around the farm, Marilla, encouraged by her friend Rachel Lynde, played by Sue Heil, at first intends to
send Anne back. But she and Matthew are charmed by the talkative girl, and Anne becomes a part of their family. The foundling also carves out a niche for herself in the village, finding a best friend in Diana Barry, played by Soren Lefever, and establishing a rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe, played by Derrick Lambert. The play is co-directed by Monica DePaul and Alex Weaver. Huyard said that the tale of Anne coming
to Green Gables resonates with the heart of Cavod, which was founded with the goal of associating the arts with the Creator, God. “We love the story of this orphan girl who is so lonely and who learns to love and be loved,” said Huyard. “That’s what we’re all about (at Cavod). We are all orphans until we are accepted into the biblical family. There is that beautiful undertone of going from a broken family to becoming a whole family unit (in this story).” To do justice to the production’s large number of scenes, Cavod is installing a turntable in the theater. “The turntable will fill the entire stage, and it will have a wall in the middle,” explained Huyard, who added that one side of the wall will be the Cuthberts’ kitchen, while the other side might be the small school Anne attends. “The scene changes will happen in front of the audience,” said Huyard, who has engaged set designer Dave Dorman to research the regional and historical elements necessary to tell the story with accuracy. To add musical accompaniment to the show, a flautist has been retained to play during transitions and key moments. “This is one way we are making it a little different, and I think that will be a lot of fun,” said Huyard. Members of the cast and crew are looking forward to presenting the children’s classic that Huyard believes will resonate with area families. “There are times when Anne or Marilla become frustrated, and we can see ourselves in that,” he noted. “It’s lighthearted. It has really joyful moments, and it ends very sweetly.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

range from classic Broadway to country and folk for the story, which is set in Alabama and requires some characters to put on Southern accents. “The score is beautiful,” said Wagner. “There are ballads that bring the emotions of the characters out.” Wagner cited “The River Between Us,” which is sung by Edward and Will about their broken relationship, and “I Don’t Need a Roof,” which is sung by Sandra to Edward. As Sandra, Wolfe will age from age 18 into middle age. “I like playing the young version of Sandra. She is very bubbly and friendly,” noted Wolfe, who added that the more mature Sandra is a woman of extreme calm. “It’s a 180-degree switch,” Wolfe said. As Edward, Dominguez is looking forward to playing the character he called “super explosive.” “(Edward is) really imaginative,” said Dominguez. “It can be hard to embody his character. He’s got a lot of grit, but he knows how to (have fun).”
Dominguez likes how the character uses his stories and personality to influence and inspire others. “I really enjoy (the song) ‘Fight the Dragons,’” said Dominguez, who added that Edward sings this song to Will. “(In the song, Edward) is saying he will fight the dragons and win the battles, and he hopes that one day his son will fight the dragons with him and carry on to fight them himself,” explained Dominguez. “That song really touches my heart because I lost my father at the age of 6, and this entire musical has helped me connect with (who he was) better.” To help prepare the actors, Wagner scheduled a master class with Broadway performer Ciara Renée for March 16. Renée was a member of the 2013 Broadway cast of “Big Fish.” Readers who would like to purchase tickets to “Big Fish” may email tbrill@ lchsyes.org or call 717-509-0310.

Swimmers, Bowlers Cap Seasons in States by Vaughn Brown
The 2018-2019 swimming season officially hit the books with the conclusion of the PIAA championships which were held this past weekend at Bucknell University. Warwick was represented in four events, split evenly between Friday and Saturday. Oliver Lance stood as the lone Warrior to advance out of the qualifying rounds when he placed 12th in Saturday’s preliminary heat of the 100 backstroke. Lance’s finish in 51.27, which came in just under a second of his 51.44 seeding time, earned him a spot in the consolation finals later that same day.
Once there, Lance dropped slightly off his pace with a finish in 51.68 which landed him 14th overall. That followed his appearance in Friday’s 200 IM prelims where the senior swam to an 18th place finish with a time of 1:54.78, just barely missing the 16th and final qualifying position which Paul Brosky of Lasalle College clinched with his time of 1:54.35. On the girl’s side, the 200-freestyle relay team of Catherine Chen, Morgan Stuhltrager, Maya Hartzler, and Hannah Greenway also came within a fingertip of making the consolations. Their time of 1:38.33 came just behind the Upper
2019/20 Lancaster Elite
Tryouts
St-Clair team of Taylor Connors, Lauren Connors, Elinor Connor, and Abby Rutkowski which advanced with a finish of 1:38.21. Chen also took part in Saturday’s 100 freestyle event where she finished 28th with a time of 53.65 which shaved a little over a second off her seeding time of 52.73. BOWLING The weekend also saw an end to the bowling season as 48 bowlers from around the state converged on Dutch Lanes for the Pennsylvania High School State Championships. One Warwick bowler made it out of Friday’s qualifying round as Tony Lutz landed the fifth seed, but fell in the first round 268-192 to Pennsbury’s Jake Feher. His six-game total of 1254, which included scores of 233, 212, 189, 211, 237, and 172, gave him a 17-point advantage over Middletown’s Cody Brunner whose six-game total of 1237 fell just below the cut. In the finals, Lutz failed to find his traction against Feher who was eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champion Kolby Bennet of Cedar Crest.
Isaac Erickson rolled a 224, 184, 119, 199, 171, and 191 for a 1088 series which placed him below the cut in qualifying at 22nd. Ashley Sham also represented the Warriors, but her qualifying series of 1186 which included games of 194, 163, 174, 189, 278, and 188 landed her in eighth place, three places away from advancing. In the team competition which was
held on Saturday, Warwick pulled together to roll the tournament high total of 4182 in the qualifying round of three games along with two Baker sets, earning the top seed in the finals. L-L rival Cedar Crest finished slightly behind the Warriors with a 4177 pinfall to lock up the second seed and eventually came back to beat Warwick 2-0 in the championship match after defeating third seed
Norwin in the semifinals 2-0. Facing a stacked Cedar Crest squad that included both boy’s and girl’s individual champions in Kolby Bennett and Paige Boyd, the Warriors put up a good fight but could not fend off the Falcons who racked up a 204-192 win in the first game of the best-of-three series and followed with a 196-169 victory in the second to wrap things up.
