Carol Hamilton will use her voice to speak God’s Word

People are the same no matter where you go, and we all are dealing with some sort of adversity. And the one thing that we all have in common is that our lives are happier, richer and better with God in them.

That’s the inspirational message that Carol Hamilton will bring with her from Charleston, W.Va., when she speaks at the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club (LCWC) luncheon at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz, on Wednesday, April 5, at noon.A seasoned public speaker, Hamilton still leads an active life in retirement, after a 30-year career that included working as a television news anchor in southern California.

“My job as the speaker is to reach out,” said Hamilton. “This is considered an outreach event, but a very non-threatening one. Kind of like, ‘Here’s what we believe. W hat do you think?’ My job is to give my faith story. Everyone’s story is obviously different. But

the bottom line is we all have come to a place where we invited Jesus into our lives.”

The LCWC is associated with the national religious organization Women’s Connection, for which Hamilton does a great deal of public speaking. In addition to speakers, LCWC’s regular luncheons typically feature music, fellowship and praise.

Hamilton said her speech will include three or four of her favorite Bible verses.

“The theme of the speech is how you come to know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior and what a difference it makes in your life,” said Hamilton. “A personal story is always a good start. I don’t go unprepared, and I also pray beforehand. When you’re telling your own story, it’s a little easier. It’s about having something relatable, having a message.”

With many of her career accomplishments behind her, Hamilton notes that she is in a very good place at this point of her life. She knows where she’s going because

Join author Robert Dugoni for a talk

There’s an occupational hazard Mary Ann Steinhauer faces as the leader of the Council of Friends of Public Libraries. “People will stop me in the street and ask, ‘Are you having another author event?’” she said with a laugh. Thankfully for Steinhauer, the answer is “yes.” The Council of Friends will host awardwinning author Robert Dugoni on Thursday, April 13, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The event will begin at 11 a.m.

Dugoni is perhaps best known for his crime mysteries and legal thrillers. His Tracy Crosswhite police series has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. Dugoni is also the author of the Charles Jenkins espionage series and the David Sloane legal thriller series. Additionally, he has written several stand-alone novels, including “The 7th Canon,” “Damage Control,” “The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell: A Novel” and “The World Played Chess.” Ticket holders for the April talk will receive a copy of Dugoni’s latest novel, “Her Deadly Game.”

she’s comfortable with where she’s been.

“Life is full of bumps,” said Hamilton, a breast cancer survivor. “But by and large, it’s better to live with God, instead of searching all the time. I’ve made a choice to have Jesus take control of my life. Lately, I’ve found myself enjoying being in the background a little bit. My ego is fine with that. It’s the cycle of life. The hope is that at the end, it’s not the end.”

April won’t be Hamilton’s first trip to Lancaster County; she spoke here five years ago. She said that on her list of Lancaster must-dos are side trips to Sight & Sound Theatres’ production of “Moses” and a shopping excursion to boutiques in Lititz.

“I love central Pennsylvania,” said Hamilton. “People are lovely. It doesn’t matter if you live in the East or the North or the South or the West; we’re all in the same family.”

At Elizabeth Farms, rich history intersects with the future of agriculture

Maybe it’s the beauty. Maybe it’s some connection with nature. Maybe it’s an element of sentimentality. But human beings can form an emotional attachment, a bond, with

a parcel of land.

It’s been about 16 months since Boyd and fellow Lebanon County residents Eric Fetter and Justin Bollinger purchased historic Elizabeth Farms for just under $4 million at a public auction. Located northeast of

Brickerville at 262 Hopeland Road in Elizabeth Township, the 160-acre Elizabeth Farms was previously owned by the influential Coleman family for eight generations.

W hile the property certainly has very good commercial potential, profits weren’t necessarily the force driving its acquisition.

“It’s more than a financial move,” said Boyd. “I wouldn’t have spent $4 million if I was trying to make money. It’s for the family. It’s for the community to come out and enjoy. Land is always great to own. It’s really just about telling the story of American agriculture.”

“It was an opportunity,” said Boyd, who operates a poultry farm in South Lebanon Township and produces chickens for Bell & Evans. “That’s one of the things that led us to it. It’s an opportunity to tell the story of agriculture.

“The Colemans were some of the wealthiest families in Pennsylvania,” continued Boyd. “From that farm, all along Route 322 to Cornwall, all that land, the Colemans owned most of it. When it comes to the history of the farm, there’s a lot of value to me and my partners.”

A functioning tree farm and thriving agricultural homestead, Elizabeth Farms is home to Scottish Highland cattle, lambs, goats, donkeys, indoor and outdoor event venues, an agriculture junk-

“It’s about the interaction of people,” said Boyd. “My wife and I, and our family, we love to host. Anything we can do to get kids off screens. Some people think food comes from grocery stores.”

Boyd said that Elizabeth Farms could explore the possibility of a farm-to-table restaurant in the future. But for now, Boyd and his colleagues are focused on the present, with a healthy respect to the past.

“I think that’s why it was so hard for them to sell,” said Boyd, of the past connections between the Colemans and Elizabeth Farms. “I have the same connection to my farm in South Lebanon. I want to pass it on to my boys.”

Trips to Creation Museum, Ark Encounter planned

As in previous years, Dayspring Christian Academy invites the public to participate in its annual Summer Family Trip to the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter.

Spring Open House

Saturday,

Due to high levels of interest, two trips will be offered in 2023. The first trip will take place from Monday, June 26, to Friday, June 30. The second trip will take place from Monday, July 17, to Friday, July 21. Stops will include the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Ky.; the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Ky.; the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh; the Cincinnati Zoo in Cincinnati, Ohio; and the Flight 93 Memorial in Stoystown. In addition, the trip will include teaching on the motorcoach.

The trip will be led by Dayspring teacher and science department chair Randy Gehman, who has studied the creation versus evolution debate for more than 40 years. Gehman has had the opportunity to speak to thousands of people in schools, in churches, and on retreats.

For many years, Dayspring

students have had the opportunity to participate in a multiday field study at the Carnegie Museum, the Creation Museum, and the Ark Encounter. This is a standing part of Dayspring Christian Academy’s life science curriculum. Extending this opportunity to the community seemed a positive next step for the school.

Gehman noted that the trip aims to increase participants’

understanding of science and Scripture.

The trip is designed for people of middle school age and up, although children as young as 6 have attended. Prices per person include all hotels, motorcoach transportation, admissions to the attractions, and breakfasts. For more information or to register for the trip, call 717-285-2000 or visit www.mycreationtrip.com.

Wellness Call program launched

Jeff McMenamin, community and customer support manager at United Disabilities Services (UDS), launched a Wellness Call program, using grants and donations to help provide wellness calls to individuals free of charge for a limited time.

Realizing how much the COVID-19 pandemic brought isolation upon the population, especially the aging community and those with disabilities, the idea for the Wellness Call program was born.

With the rapid onset of technology that makes it easier to stay home, the risk of isolation is growing. The calls provide security to individuals who may be isolated and offers peace of mind that someone cares and is

actively checking on them.

Check-in calls make sure individuals are comfortable and completing daily living activities such as taking their medications and eating properly and also assesses the mood for safety in the home. Conversational calls offer a more in-depth conversation about family, hobbies, and current events and provide a sense of connection.

The Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy of Lancaster has scheduled a multi-studio regional collective showcase of dance called “Relevé,” which is a ballet term meaning “to rise up.” The event will be held on Sunday, April 2, at 4 p.m. in the High Fine Performing Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School.

Viktor Yeliohin’s primary vision is to provide the community with beautiful dance performances while raising money for Ukrainian children affected by the war. All proceeds will be donated to Step-In, an organization that donates medical supplies and provides health care for Ukrainian children, and other nonprofits that share the goal to meet the medical needs of children in Ukraine.

The showcase represents a partnership between local dance studios, whose dancers will collectively perf orm pieces in ballet, contemporary and modern dance styles. In addition to the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, the participating schools include Encore Dance Center, Balance Dance, Adrenaline Dance of York, Movement Laboratory, NetCo Dance, and Emme Dance Collective. The showcase has special meaning to some of the dancers as ballerinas from Ukraine have participated in Yeliohin’s annual production of “The Nutcracker.”

For more information, visit www.vyballet.com or call Yeliohin at 717-419-6688.
