Lititz Rec Schedules Parkinson’s Awareness Event By Ann Mead Ash
“My hope is we will continue to do this each time Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month (is observed),” said Erica Johnson, personal trainer and certified Rock Steady Boxing coach with the Lititz recCenter. Johnson is organizing the inaugural Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle at the rec center, 301 Maple St., Lititz, on Saturday, April 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. Johnson’s hope is to include experts and speakers, such as neurologists, speech therapists, and massage therapists, that specialize in working with Parkinson’s patients. David Lauver, who runs PWR! Moves, a fitness, rehab, and wellness program designed for patients with Parkinson’s disease, will be present, as will Johnson. Amy Pavlov, massage therapist, will speak
about how massage therapy can relax the muscles and help increase blood flow in patients with Parkinson’s. “There are lots of benefits (to massage therapy),” Pavlov said. Rock Steady Boxing classes, which are currently being held for the second year at the rec center, are based on a method that was developed when someone with Parkinson’s disease realized that boxing with a friend helped relieve his symptoms. In 2012, a training camp was launched to help spread word about the method. Johnson learned more about the story behind the method when she trained for her certification. She noted that Rock Steady may increase mobility and flexibility and lessen tremors. Both Lauver and Johnson will be running sample classes during the event. “We will both be present and doing See Meet And Mingle pg 4

WMS Students Win Grand Prize At Future City By Ann Mead Ash
“You never think you’re going to win,” said a thoughtful Lauren Matt recently. Lauren and her friend Grace Kegel thought it was so unlikely that they would triumph at the recent Future City competition, where they were presenters along with Xavier Flaiz, that they regularly teased each other about it. “Grace and I had a running joke that we would win and go to space camp,” said Lauren. “Then we ended up actually winning, and it was unbelievable.” The Warwick Middle School (WMS) team, which included the three students and a number of their peers, earned first place at the 27th annual Future

Lausch, Elena Smith, Aiden Troop, Rebekah Trovinger, Maggie Turner, and Nate Wenger. Educator Mike Smith served as team adviser, and Christian Kegel was volunteer mentor. The competition requires students to select a city, research a specific issue that city might face, write a 1,500-word essay with a focus on a solution to the issue, and build a scale model of the city from recycled materials. The WMS team chose the city of Toyama, located on the west coast of Japan. Lauren noted that the tabletop model of the city was created from carved foam, plastic scrap items, broken trophy bases, old Christmas ornaments, and a broken barometer. “We used recycled gum wrappers for the cherry blossom trees made of carpet padding,” said Lauren. While the essay covered a multitude of areas, the students were required to provide the answer to a given problem. “We focused on resilience of the power grid against a natural disaster,” explained Xavier. “In any city, they have larger power generation sites - a dam or something that burns fossil fuels - but we used local sources.” Xavier added that solar panels, geothermal sources, and piezoelectricity, which is generated by pressure, were all parts of a microgrid generation system. Lauren noted that a number of
technologies were employed to insulate the city against a power failure. “One of our technologies was layered decentralized optimization (LDO) architecture,” she said. “LDO is a microgrid bottomsup approach that manages energy supply and demand at the local level and is capable of working independently.” The students also developed a special warning system. “We used quantum communications systems (QCS),” said Lauren. “It’s an … emergency notification (program) that can instantaneously message the whole city if a natural disaster is about to occur.” Lauren and Xavier noted that a connection to Dr. Joseph RunzoInada, the chief resiliency officer of Toyama provided a significant boost to the project. “We were able to teleconference with him and his team of city planners,” said Lauren. “We were able to share our ideas, and we asked a lot of questions, and throughout our project, he shared resources and presentations and things they are implementing.” Lauren noted that the students utilized and expanded on the information he provided. The grand prize for winning the Future City competition included a trip for the three presenters to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., in August. In addition, the school will receive $7,500 to be used for STEM programs.

Volleyball Team Records Two Straight Shutouts by Vaughn Brown
Off to a quick start to the season, the Warwick boys’ volleyball team went 2-0 last week in which the Warriors recorded two straight shut outs. Elizabethtown represented the first to fall when Warwick handled the Bears 3-0 last Wednesday and then extended the same courtesy to McCaskey the following night with another 3-0 victory. Despite a seemingly easy go of it in the first two sets versus Elizabethtown (25-17, 25-13), the Bears put up a fight in the third, 31-29. Foster Lobb recorded 12 kills for Warwick while Chad Meeder and Noah Miller each had one service ace. Against McCaskey, Miller led the surge with eight kills, four aces and seven digs while Kameron Brenneman came up with one block. While the Red Tornado were competitive, Warwick was still able to breeze through 25-17, 25-8, and 25-19. TRACK In almost identical fashion, the Warwick boys and girls came away with a road victory last Tuesday at Cedar Crest. Sporting an 86-64 score, the boys were led by three event
winner Nick Coomer while the girls were spurred on by a clean sweep in the relays that helped lead to an 81-69 win. Thanks in part to Coomer’s sweep of the throws where he claimed first in the shot (50-9.5), the discus (128-1), and javelin (140-2) the boys cleaned up in all the field events. Nathan Good doubled by winning both the high jump (6-0) and the pole vault (10-0) while Christian Hess won the long jump (19-10) and Ryan Fegley took first in the triple jump (39-6.5). Fegley also earned another first place finish in the 200, outrunning the competition with a 22.7. In the relays, Cedar Crest pulled out a victory in the 400, but Warwick took the other two with Jeremy Bell, Jonathon Martin, Jacob Smith, and Connor Shields winning the 3200 in 8:16.5 and Fegley, Shields, Bell, and Girby taking the 1600 with a time of 3:38.4. Martin also ran the fastest time in the 1600, finishing in 4:41.1 and Shields finished first in the 800 in 2:03.3. The girls’ relay teams picked up right where they left off in last year’s post-season by taking all three events with two members also doubling up
as individual winners as well. In the 3200, Mary Kate Bomberger, Caitlyn Wagner, Kate Dickow, and Jaylyn Williamson ran a 10:45.66, while Lily Palacio-Lewis, Leah Graybill, Meghan Quinn, and Emily Williamson won the 400 with a time of 48.2, and Graybill, both the Williamson’s and Emily Skidmore took the 1600 in 4:15.3. Graybill was one of the two relay members to win twice in the solo races as well with a track best time of 58.3 in the 400 and a 24.6 in the 200. Palacio-Lewis also claimed two first place finishes in the individuals by posting a winning time of 11.6 in the 100 and going 16-4 in the long jump. She was also second in the 200 behind Graybill with a time of 25.1. Other winners included Skidmore (52.0) in the 300 hurdles, Sophia Nau (12:46.5) in the 3200, and Quinn (31-7.5) in the triple jump. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Two wins last week put the Warwick girls in the Section One hunt early as the Warriors (2-0) were right in the mix of things at the week’s end. The two victories were not easy, however, with both coming in come-from-behind fashion as they topped Cedar Crest 12-11 and then beat Elizabethtown 11-10.
“Against Cedar Crest on Tuesday, the girls played really well,” commented head coach Eric Jeanes. “It was back-and-forth all game until they went up two with about 10 minutes to go.” After that, it was all Warwick as the lady Warriors rallied from the 11-9 deficit to score the final three goals of the game with Delaney Russell putting them over the top for good. While the Falcons outshot Warwick 26-15 in a game that was tied 5-5 at halftime, it was the play in goal that helped put them in a position to win. “Zoe Stauffer had some big saves in the last few minutes,” added Jeans. “Zoe Sheppard had a nice game with three goals and Piper Van Dore anchored our defense in the back.” Stauffer ended the day with 15 saves for the Warriors. “On Friday, we started fast and went up 5-0 pretty early. Unfortunately, we let them creep back into the game, partially because we had some bad turnovers,” Jeans said about their victory over the Bears. In that game, Warwick took a 6-4 lead into the second half, but fell behind 10-9 with under five minutes
to go. A strong offensive effort by Tanner Armstrong led Warwick, but it was Olivia Robinson with a hat trick that helped get the win. “We responded quickly with a goal by Olivia Robinson to tie and then Olivia scored again about 90 seconds later to give us the lead for good,” stated Jeans. Between the two, they accounted for eight total goals with Carlie Martin (2) and Amanda Beck (1) rounding out the scoring. “Zoe Stauffer again had a good game in net with some big saves late,” Jeanes noted. “Tanner Armstrong led the way with five goals and won some big draws for us too.” BOYS’ LACROSSE It was a good week for the boys as well with the team racking up three wins, first with a 9-5 effort versus Cedar Crest last Tuesday followed by a 13-7 win at Elizabethtown Thursday, and then a 7-5 victory over Exeter on Friday. With the wins, the Warriors (2-0, 4-0) found themselves tied atop the section with Manheim Township (2-0, 3-1) and Hempfield (2-0, 3-1).
Outshooting the Falcons 38-16, Warwick used four goals from Conor Adams and a hat-trick from Joshua Swift to claim the win. Extending a two-goal, first quarter lead to 6-3 by halftime the Warriors never let Cedar Crest into the game despite only earning a 3-2 scoring advantage during the second half. Both Justin Gerhart and Hilton Michael added one goal apiece. Adams kept up the pressure on offensive against the Bears as well, scoring five times while Michael racked up a hat-trick in a game that was never in question. Elizabethtown gamely tried climbing back into contention, scoring twice in the second quarter to make it 7-4 at the break, but could not stop the Warriors on offense. Gerhart’s two goals, along with one apiece from Carter Davis, Swift, and Cayden Rihn rounded out Warwick’s scoring. Exeter proved a tougher task for the Warriors, but the home team found a way to pull it off in a game that saw 68 total shots on goal combined between the two squads. Led by Michael, whose four goals were added to by Gerhart (2) and

MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition Carter Davis (1), Warwick’s defense overcame a hat-trick by Exeter’s Jason Metz and eventually came together to stop the Eagles just short in the two-score victory. BASEBALL Splitting last week’s games to go 1-1, Warwick (1-1, 2-1) landed in a tie with Penn Manor (1-1, 2-1) for second place in Section One. The Warriors began with a 2-0 win over Manheim Township last Wednesday and then lost 4-2 to Penn Manor on Friday. Dagen Young earned the win over the Blue Streaks, going four and two-thirds innings in the start and surrendering no runs on two hits before Colin Brubaker and Colby Martin finished in relief with Martin getting the save. John Seibert’s solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning broke a scoreless tie that saw Warwick strand three runners in scoring position up until that point. Seibert lined an 0-1 offering over the center field fence with no outs, but Warwick went down in order after that before coming back to score again in the fifth when Young was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, sending Zach Shertzer home with the final run of the game. Penn Manor added three runs in the fourth to one scored in the first, going up 4-0, before Warwick answered with two runs in the fifth to halve the deficit. However, the
Warriors could not manufacture any more offense after that in the 4-2 loss. Seibert (1-2) reached base on a single to start the fifth and was replaced by courtesy runner Colin Brubaker. Collin Beech (0-2) followed with a fielder’s choice grounder that cut Brubaker down at second for the first out of the inning. Martin (1-4) then singled to right field which advanced Beech to second where pinch runner Jackson Davies took over base running duties. Ethan Heller’s (3-3, RBI) single to right scored Davies and moved Martin to second where he eventually scored on a ground ball by Shertzer (1-3, RBI). Brendan Martin took the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits with no strikeouts and two walks. Evan Rohrbach threw three innings of relief with four strikeouts, one walk and no runs scored on no hits. SOFTBALL Warwick (2-0, 2-0) won both games played last week to remain tied with Hempfield (2-0, 3-0) at the top of the Section One standings. The Warriors beat Manheim Township 5-0 last Wednesday and then rallied to win 5-2 over Penn Manor on Friday. Marissa Treibley recorded the win for Warwick, allowing only one hit and striking out two before Katelyn Minney came on in relief in the fourth, getting six strikeouts and only allowing one hit to finish. The lady Warriors racked up seven hits

wild pitch by Minney, but Warwick answered by scoring five times over the course of three innings with a threerun fifth that broke the tie and eventually sent the Warriors on to the win. An error on a Catie Brubaker (3-3, RBI) ground ball allowed Evie Clugston (1-3) to score, giving Warwick the lead, before a two-run double by Jones (1-2, 2RBI) made it 4-1. After a Penn Manor error in the sixth allowed Warwick’s Kenzie Stewart (1-3) to score, Penn Manor attempted a comeback, scoring one in the seventh before Minney closed the door, throwing the complete game with two runs scored on four hits and seven strikeouts.
and scored once in each of the first three innings before adding two more in the seventh. With the bases loaded in the first, Peyton Heisey (2-3) singled home Minney (2-3, RBI) to make it 1-0. Minney then doubled home Emily Beale (0-3) in the second for the 2-0 score before Treibley (1-3, RBI) brought home Danielle Jones (1-3, 2RBI) on a single in the third to make it 3-0. It was a two-run homer by Jones in the seventh that scored Minney and finalized the victory for Warwick. On Friday, Penn Manor scored first in the top of the second inning on a
