Lititz train station has always been welcoming

It is somehow appropriate that a train station is Lititz’s welcome center.

Centrally located and historically accurate, the welcome center is often the first thing visitors to Lititz encounter, not unlike they did at the train station 140 years ago. Boy, talk about making a good first impression and putting your best foot forward.

All things Pennsylvania

Community members are invited to discover or rediscover many of the events, museums, attractions and getaways that Pennsylvania has to offer at the fifth annual PA Family Travel Fair, to be held on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Church in Lancaster. The event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will also feature children’s activities, entertainment and food.

Those who visit the travel fair will also have opportunities to win prizes, including vacation packages. “The first 500 (attendees) will get a goodie bag to collect all of their swag from all of the vendors,” said Rachel Stebbins, marketing director at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., one of the

event organizers. “There is a lot of opportunity throughout the event to register for prizes. Almost all of the vendors are bringing prizes to give away.” The grand prize will be a family getaway provided by the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau.

The event focuses on providing information about family-friendly activities that are available throughout the entire state, including locally in Lancaster County and as far away as the northern tier of Pennsylvania.

“When you are talking to vendors, they are not trying to sell you things. They are just providing information,” Stebbins emphasized. “The visitor’s bureaus will represent a lot of the (sites) in their areas, but we also have (representatives of) specific attractions that are coming to talk specifically about their places.”

Entertainment will include a magic show at noon by Papa Tater Magical Family Entertainment and a live show at 2 p.m. by Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland. Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns and Chipper from Herr Foods Inc. will greet visitors, and the Kids Cookie Break radio show will be on-site doing live interviews. Visitors will also be able to meet friendly service dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS).

Food trucks will be available offering breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks and ice cream. New this year will be Joe on the GO Coffee Co., which will offer coffee, tea and breakfast selections.

Stebbins hopes that people will attend the event to learn about local attractions they may not even

be aware of. “It’s nice to have options with what you can do without having to travel really far,” she stated. “You can have a nice, long weekend or you can go out and do some of these activities and be home at night because it’s just that close. People often don’t realize what is right around them.”

Calvary Church is located at 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Admission to and parking at the PA Family Travel Fair are free. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, including a complete list of exhibitors, food trucks, activities and giveaways, visit www.pafamilytravel.com. Located at 28 N. Broad St. at the mouth of Lititz Springs Park and in the heart of the downtown business district, the welcome center is housed in a seven-eighths replica of the original 1884 Lititz Passenger Depot and Express Station. Not only does it mirror the borough’s unique history, but the train station also accentuates the importance that the railroad played in Lititz’s social and commercial development.

“I think it’s very appropriate, with Lititz having so much pride in its history,” said Ann Bowden, the Lititz Welcome Center’s coordinator. “A lot of people think it’s an original station, and there are still some original artifacts there. I wish the original station was still there. But it’s the next-best thing.”

The current train station was dedicated in May 1999 at the same spot that the original red brick passenger depot was first opened in December of 1884, See Train station pg 2

some 20 years after the Reading and Columbia Railroad began servicing Lititz. The original train station was demolished in 1957, and the spot sat vacant for more than 40 years.

“The reason they tore it down was that the passenger service on the Reading-to-

Columbia line went bankrupt,” said Bowden. “When they stopped the passenger service, there was no need for a train station. At some point, someone came up with the idea to rebuild a replica train station.”

The original Victorian Gothic passenger depot was

“It was a passenger line between Columbia and Reading, but I’m guessing there may have been freight service as well,” said Bowden. “I’m sure that’s how a lot of the goods and materials made in Lititz were moved to the rest of the world.”

The annual event will feature a panel of speakers as well as information booths from community organizations. North Star program director Paula Montijo will discuss the organization’s efforts to provide restoration and support to survivors of trafficking. Brad Ortenzi and Andrea McHenry of ZOE International will talk about what survivors need in order to experience

whole restoration. Andrea Meredith from She’s Somebody’s Daughter will speak about resources available to women who have experienced sexual exploitation.

Clark noted that other agencies will be on hand at the event to distribute information and provide resources to the community. “Our goal is to collaborate with community partners to network, maximize our resources,

ing, clothing, or writing in the 1700s community. Students will be free to travel in small groups with chaperones in any order to the areas of their interest.

There are 49 different events, including pickleball, cornhole, shuffleboard and

foul shooting. Events will be held at several locations.

The registration fee includes most events, a Tshirt, and lunch on May 1 through Wednesday, May 3. The registration deadline is Thursday, April 13. For details and registration, visit www.lancseniorgames.org.

expand awareness of trafficking, abolish trafficking and work together to provide resources for survivors to experience restoration and live lives of their own choice,” she stated. “People in the community want to get involved to help, and this event is an opportunity to help people understand what has been done already and what work we still need to do.”

Founded in 2010, North Star works with women who have been trafficked to provide physical, psychological and spiritual care. The organization recently opened The Survivor Center, where classroom and program space is located as well as a gym and other resources for residents of North Star’s restoration home.

Clark encourages anyone with an interest in the topic to attend Welcome to the Battle. “This is a cause that should matter to our entire community,” she said. “We

tend to think of slavery in terms of something that happed 150 years ago, something we’ve abolished, but we don’t realize that modernday slavery still exists in the form of human trafficking. We need to know this so we can be honest about what is happening in our community and our commonwealth.”

She hopes the event will also inspire people to join the fight. “Come learn about this and see how you can get involved and you can make a difference,” she remarked. “There are so many opportunities to help. We want to welcome anyone to the battle who wants to come. There is a space for everyone in the community to get involved.”

Rock Lititz, PCA&D launch education center

Responding to the live event industry’s growth and its goal of next generation workforce development, Rock Lititz is adding an education center to its 108-acre campus.

Lancaster-based Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) and United Kingdom-based Academy of Live Technology (ALT) at Production Park, formerly Backstage Academy, have partnered to create the ALT at Rock Lititz. The new ALT and the partnership among Rock Lititz,

PCA&D and the ALT at Production Park was launched at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival at the British Music Embassy on March 13 by Lee Brooks, CEO of Production Park; Rachel Nicholson from ALT; Andrea Shirk, president and CEO at Rock Lititz; and Carissa Massey, provost of PCA&D.

The partnership represents a global scale collaboration, melding the strengths and expertise of Rock Lititz, PCA&D and the British higher

Safe Communities plans retreat

Safe Communities, a Lancaster organization dedicated to preventing child sexual abuse and supporting adult survivors, will offer a retreat for survivors of childhood trauma and those who support them. The retreat, titled “Resistance,

Resilience, and Re-emergence,” will be held at the Hurst House Bed & Breakfast, 154 E. Farmersville Road, Ephrata, on Saturday, April 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The retreat will feature guest speaker Lyn Barret, author of “Crazy: Reclaim-

education provider, which has helped students to develop live production creative, technical and professional skills since its founding in 2011.

Construction has begun on the ALT at Rock Lititz facility, which adjoins the existing large-scale rehearsal spaces, Studio 1 and Studio 2. The structure includes 22,400 square feet of classrooms, production space, digital labs and a students’ common area, with the option of expanding to the second and third floors

ing Life From the Shadow of Traumatic Memory.”

There is a fee for the workshop; a few scholarships are available. For more information and to register, visit www.safecommunitiespa.org, email info@safecommunities pa.org or call 717-560-9989.

to meet future needs.

A fourth rehearsal studio is also included in the structure, which will accommodate artists who perform at clubs, theaters and small amphitheater venues, and will provide PCA&D students with handson experiences in production technologies. The 9,300square-foot Studio B includes 7,000 square feet of open space for rehearsals, product demonstrations and technical training sessions.

Students will attend their general education classes at PCA&D’s downtown Lancaster facilities, then receive their immersive technical education on the Rock Lititz campus, earning a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts in live experience design and production. Student recruitment has begun, and the Rock Lititz campus education center will be ready to welcome students for classes in the fall of 2024.

Recognizing the proximity to a number of live experience and event production companies in the region, PCA&D added the live experience design major in 2021 to prepare art and design students for opportunities in the growing industry.

turing various proteins and ingredients, will be showcased each week.

Giant’s dietitians will present Family Meals at 5 on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. Home cooks will learn to build easy, quick, and balanced meals in under 30 minutes.

Table Talk, to be offered on Wednesdays at noon, will be held in conjunction with Earth Day on Saturday, April 22. The dietitians will engage with vendors and communi-

ty partners throughout the month about ways everyone can reduce food waste and heal the planet.

Better for You Baking, where home cooks will learn how they can make small substitutions and swaps to their favorite desserts, will be offered every Thursday at noon. Each week, the dietitians will highlight new recipes and ideas that satisfy the sweet tooth with less of the guilt.

Lancaster County Women’s Expo planned

The ninth annual Lancaster County Women’s Expo (Spring) will take place on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wyndham Resort, 2300 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster.

Hosted by OLP Events, the Women’s Expo aims to bring together women of all ages for shopping, inspiration and relaxation, and to learn about products and services.

Guests can connect with a wide range of exhibitors in health and wellness, finance, travel, home improvements, leisure, beauty and more and will be eligible for door prizes.

Main-stage entertainment and seminars will cover making the most of one’s doctor’s appointment; a fun and educational history of craft beer; guidance on finding a suitable organizational style; and a cooking demonstration showing how to prepare healthy meals in minutes.

AAA will have its Mobile Branch cargo van set up for help with many AAA services, such as notary service, passport photos, and theme park tickets.

Local author Chas Williamson will be on hand signing copies of his latest novel, and guests may stop in front of the colorful Women’s Expo photo backdrop for a selfie or group shot.

Sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are still available. For more information, call 717-285-1350 or email info@onlinepub.com.

Advance guest registration and general information are available at www.agreatway tospendmyday.com.
