Bringing Shakespeare To Life hakespeare may have written his plays 400 years ago, but his work is more relevant than ever, said Laura Howell. “You cannot go a day without hearing something relating to Shakespeare,” noted Howell, the executive artistic director of The People’s Shakespeare Project. Believing in the relevance of the writer, Howell created ShakesPeers,

a high school Shakespeare festival, last year. This year’s event was held virtually on March 22 and featured 16 students from Elizabethtown Area High School, Linden Hall, J.P. McCaskey High School, and The Stone Independent School. Student participants enjoyed a comedy workshop while teachers met with Howell to discuss and share teaching techniques for Shakespeare. The festival also featured an intensive monologue workshop as well as an opportunity for students to perform for professional acting coaches. The event concluded with participants performing monologues and scenes from Shakespeare comedies. Howell said the festival had been something she wanted to do for years, ever since she served as a teacher and theater director at Lancaster Country Day School in the early 2000s. She realized her students responded positively to Shakespeare when they had the chance to read his works out loud. See Shakespeare pg 7

Volunteers collect and pack food items at Blessings of Hope, a wholesale food bank in Leola.
In February, when parts of Texas were hit by a fluke snowstorm, Aaron Fisher and David Lapp, CEOs of Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, decided to send Fisher to the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area with a tractor-trailer load of food and water through their Hands of Hope program. Fisher remained in the Lone Star State to oversee distribution. “Food and water was what they needed,” recalled Fisher, who added that trailers went to Houston and Austin as well. “They had no electric or water, so water was in high demand.”

Adults and children gathered at Camp Mack in Newmanstown for the 2020 Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls. BY ANN MEAD ASH
In the spring of 2020, when many events had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls, an outdoor event, was held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation (Camp Mack), 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown. The fundraiser, the brainchild of Cub Scout Case Baccio, was organized to help send veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes to the 2020 Warrior Weekend held in July. “(The tourna-
ment) went really well,” said Case, a member of Cub Scout Pack 93, who is now a fourth-grader at Bucher Elementary School. “We were able to raise more than $4,000, and there were quite a few people there.” Buoyed by the success of the 2020 event, Case, along with his mother, Ali Bucher, and friend Eric McCullough, are organizing this year’s event, to be held at Camp Mack on Sunday, May 16, rain or shine. Area residents who enjoy fishing are invited to take part in the event. The adult open and hero tournament, for those age 16 and older, will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. The adult hero category will include

participants who are Purple Heart recipients or Gold Star family members. Lunch will be provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The children’s open and hero tournament will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Child hero category members will include children of Purple Heart recipients or members of Gold Star families. This year, only 30 adult and 30 child participants will be registered. The 2020 tournaments attracted 45 participants. Winners were named in categories including biggest fish and largest number of fish caught. Bucher noted that one participant caught a large catfish, but McCullough added that the largest fish caught that day was a bass. According to Bucher, two goals of this year’s tournament are to attract more veterans and to double the amount that was raised last year. “We want to promote the community getting together for this,” she said. “We’d like to see some new people.” Individuals who are interested in registering for the event may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “2nd Annual Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament benefiting BS3G.” Readers who have questions may call 717-2245923 or 910-964-8594.

Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.

The cast, crew, and orchestra of the Lancaster Catholic High School production of “The Little Mermaid” are preparing to stage the show both live and virtually.
“This group was jumping out of their skin with excitement,” recalled Wagner, who added that the students know the characters and the melodies and wanted to work on learning the show as soon as the books arrived. “‘The Little Mermaid’ is the story of Ariel, played by Sheridan Riva, a mermaid princess with a beautiful singing voice, who lives in an undersea kingdom. Ariel should be content, but she desires the one thing she cannot have: life on land. When Ariel recues a human prince named Eric, played by Henry Greiner, from a storm at sea and falls in love with him, she is even more determined to realize her dream. She defies her father, King Triton, played by Zac Snyder, and bargains with sea witch
Ursula, played by Kati Lyle, who demands Ariel’s voice in exchange for entry into Prince Eric’s world. With help from Flounder, played by Oliver Hughes; Scuttle, played by Caroline Erb; and Sebastian, played by Isabelle Titzer, Ariel works to gain the love of the prince without being able to speak. If they fail, she will lose her soul to Ursula. The show will be presented at the school to a limited audience by invitation. The stream will be available from Sunday, April 18, through Sunday, May 2, at 7 p.m. each evening. Tickets to watch the
streamed show may be purchased through the Fine and Performing Arts link under Student Life at www.lchsyes.org or by searching for “Lancaster Catholic High School” at www.showtix4u.com. A discount is available for family ticket purchase. “The Little Mermaid” is known for big musical numbers such as “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl,” but also for “Positoovity,” which will feature tap dancing seagulls, led by experienced tap dancer Erb as Scuttle. Wagner has been directing rehearsals for the 46 students in the cast, crew, and orchestra. She noted that the students’ masks make it harder for her to judge the work of the ensemble, but she praised the singers in the lead roles and noted that many members of the small orchestra will need to play more than one instrument during the performance. Wagner noted that creating convincing underwater scenes through choreography, staging, lighting, and costumes is also a challenge. During a year of uncertainty, Wagner said she is happy to offer students roles playing the iconic Disney characters. “They needed something they love and can grab on to,” she said.

One Book One School Builds Community The four Warwick elementary schools recently participated in the One Book One School One Community reading program for the seventh year in a row. The effort puts an engaging story into the hands of 2,000 students and their families. Barbara Mobley, executive director of the Warwick Education Foundation (WEF), which funded the program, reported that this year’s choice, “The Water Horse,” by British author Dick King-Smith was made by Warwick teachers Colleen Heckman, Heather Bellows, Will Maza, Kathy Steinour, and Emily Craig. King-Smith is known for his book “The Sheep-Pig,” which in 1995 became the Oscarwinning movie “Babe.”

Teachers prepared trivia quizzes and other activities to inspire class discussion and reinforce comprehension. Mobley shared that the One Book program may affect a student’s future reading choices. “We know that students don’t just discover books they love,” she said. “They discover authors they love.” Mobley noted that the authors who often become favorites are those who write books that include characters students can relate to as well as stretch the imagination. “They ask for more books by the same writer,” Mobley stated, pointing out that one sixth-grade

of The People’s Shakespeare Project, which Howell founded in 2006. The project also offers Camp Will, an acting program for middle and high school students, which will run from Monday, July 12 to Friday, July 30 this year, as well as public performances of Shakespeare plays. Howell said all of her projects provide an opportunity for people to see the impact Shakespeare continues to make today. “The emotions are honest and raw and large and real,” she explained. “He may have written in the 1600s, but he’s writing about emotions we’re still dealing with today. He’s writing about the human condition.” This year’s ShakesPeers festival was recorded and can be viewed by searching for “The People’s Shakespeare Project” on YouTube or visiting http://bit.ly/Shakespeers.

“They loved the challenge of it. They loved the language,” she recalled. “Shakespeare’s words are incredibly powerful when you put them in your mouth and, as I like to say, ‘chew on it.’ When you walk and talk and act it the way it’s supposed to be done and you actually participate in it, it’s wonderful.” The festival has offered students an opportunity to connect with other like-minded peers, Howell noted. “I love the sharing that occurs between strangers,” she said. “These are kids who have never met each other before, but they love Shakespeare, they love theater, and they love acting. Their world broadens by doing something like this. They see they are not alone in their passion. They can share it. They can learn from each other and inspire each other.” ShakesPeers is just one initiative
