Meeting Needs In Lititz Community Chest Schedules Food Drive By Ann Mead Ash
The Lititz Warwick Community Chest food pantry is not typical. “Our model is a little different than a traditional food pantry,” said Atle Bjanes, president of the Lititz Warwick Community Chest. “We don’t have a pantry where people can come and get food. We bring food to clients who request it.” Until now, the Chest has relied on food drives, such as the United States Postal Service and Scouting for Food efforts held yearly to stock its shelves. Three area churches also contribute regularly. “A lot of private citizens, churches, businesses, civic organizations, and even birthday parties hold their own food drives for us,” said Bjanes, who noted that up to 70,000 pounds of nonperishables can be stored at the pantry. Staving Off Cabin Fever struggling to fill the hours in quarantine. Mary Bauer, founder of Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, based in Chester County, has not hesitated to see the value in the hours. “Take advantage of the quarantine and get some fresh air and exercise with your dog,” said Bauer, who recommended throwing a ball or flying disc or working on basic training techniques. Those without pets to play with also have a variety of options for staving off cabin fever. Time online can be productive for both children and adults, so consider searching the internet for free See Cabin Fever pg 3

An Opportunity To Share Joy It’s often said that every challenge is an opportunity - an opportunity to grow, to encourage, to be compassionate, to give, to make others smile. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we at the Merchandiser have noticed countless community members embracing this concept, and we’d love to see more! We’re giving you an opportunity to share your joy by submitting ways you or others are figuratively turning lemons into lemonade. What fun activities have you done with your kids? What made you smile today? What constructive hobbies have you found to help you adjust to recent life changes? What has someone else done - knowingly or unknowingly that has blessed you or encouraged you? Tell your experiences at www.face book.com/townlively. Pictures and videos are welcome! Some stories will be chosen to be highlighted in a future issue of the Merchandiser and on townlively.com.

Dayspring Turns To Online Educating After Three-Day Break By Ann Mead Ash
On March 13, before Gov. Tom Wolf announced that schools would be closed, Dan Stone, Upper School principal at Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, talked with the school’s senior students. “I jokingly told them they might have to graduate in July,” said Stone, who noted that the seniors were not happy
with his announcement. “I told them it was a joke, (but) I can’t promise it will be May 30 (as planned). That might move a couple weeks.” All joking aside, Stone said that first and foremost, the school has taken a posture of prayer in response to the COVID-19 crisis. “We are praying … for our nation that the virus is short lived. bicycling are all ways for members of a family to stay active while spending time together in the fresh air. In addition, those with school-age children may want to consider structuring days to keep a routine in place. Having meals, snacks, assignments, play, and other activities at approximately consistent times creates a sense of stability. Look for activities that encourage creativity. Remember the excitement of the possibilities that lie in repurposing an old shoebox? Children can feel that same sense of potential and utilize their imaginations with simple household items such as cardboard, crayons, cotton balls, and glue. Mandy Leggett, a homeschooling

classes and other educational resources. Podcasts in an area of interest can help make the hours move more quickly, and online puzzles and games can also help keep the brain engaged. The situation is ideal for families to spend time creating quality experiences and memories. Break out the board games or the playing cards or just engage in an old-fashioned game of charades. Getting outside is also a great option. Yard games such as croquet or badminton are good choices when the weather is fine. A piece of chalk can create a hopscotch game in seconds, and a length of rope can provide hours of jumping activity. Maintaining social distance is easier in the great outdoors, so walking, running, and
Wednesday, April 15. The outside drop box is emptied daily, and each returned item is disinfected. “We have cleaned and disinfected all the toys used for the early childhood education programs and all the computers, tables, and chairs,” said Fernitz, who is looking ahead by working on upcoming activities, such as the Summer Reading Program. Also, now that there is time, maybe get to those activities that have been at the bottom of the “to-do” list for what seems like forever. Clean out the basement, the attic, or the garage. Live in an apartment? Clean out the cupboards or closets. Sanitize countertops and other areas in kitchens and bathrooms regularly. Or maybe go through the closet and prepare for warmer weather by weeding out the clothing items that were not worn last year and are ready to be donated. Another way to get ready for those days of summer is to pull out the lawn furniture or prepare the flower and vegetable beds. Go to the grill for a dinner that is different from the usual. Maybe delve into the freezer for some items that need to be used and exercise a little creativity by holding an impromptu barbecue. Of course, venturing out to get food and other items, such as medications, is a necessity. But an “every family for itself” attitude need not prevail either. Going out in public means practicing social distancing for the health and safety of all, but it can also be an opportunity to serve the community. Have an elderly neighbor who is safer at home? Why not see what groceries or medicines can be picked up for them and left on their step or porch? Or consider purchasing a few extra nonperishables for the local food pantry during a regular shopping trip. Contact the organization that runs the pantry to find out what it needs and the best times and methods to drop off items. There are opportunities to show

Conestoga-area mother and president of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, suggested using puzzles to teach about places. Her 10-year-old son completes puzzles of pictures from national parks, and the family does a virtual tour of each one as they put it together. Assembling the puzzle begins with a math assignment that measures the work surface to be sure there is room for the project. With libraries closed, many families with children may be missing educational weekly activities. Some libraries are offering story times online. Heather Smith, director of the ELANCO Library in New Holland, said that the organization is encouraging families to check out its online resources at www.elanco library.org. “Libby and OverDrive are apps that you can use to download e-books and e-audiobooks for free with your library card,” said Smith. “Books are available for (children), teens, and adults. For the preschoolers, (parents) can read along with Tumblebooks and BookFlix.” Carol Wenger, youth and children’s librarian at Pequea Valley Public Library, added that anyone with an active Lancaster County library card may visit www.pvpl.org and click on eResources to find a multitude of great websites including Heritage, Automotive Repair, and Brainfuse. However, the current situation has affected supplies. “We have a 50% increase in requests for deliveries,” said Bjanes. “We will be drawing our reserves down.” In response, the Chest will hold a selfservice food drive on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lots at Victory Church Lititz, 540 E. Newport Road, Lititz; St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 W. Orange St., Lititz; and Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz. Each church parking lot will feature at least one pickup truck as a food donation receptacle. Donors are asked to go to one of the parking lots during the allotted time and place donations in the bed of the truck. Those wishing to donate are encouraged to keep a safe social distance and leave immediately after donating. Items that the pantry especially needs right now include canned fruits, such as peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, and pineapple, and canned meats, including chicken, tuna, and pork products. White or brown rice, boxed potatoes, and meal kits that utilize hamburger, tuna, or chicken are also welcome. Canned pasta, pancake mix, syrup, and powdered milk will also be accepted. For those who are not able to donate in person, Bjanes said, monetary donations are welcome. Readers may visit http://lwcommunitychest.org for more information on ways to donate. According to Bjanes, the Chest has a hotline number for food pantry clients in the Warwick School District. “Phone volunteers retrieve the (hotline) messages and contact the clients,” said Bjanes, who added that the phone volunteers ask for important details such as the size of the family and the address before contacting the delivery volunteer. Until recently, the delivery volunteer would go to the pantry and collect food from the shelves before visiting a local grocery store to purchase fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, deli meat, cheese, meats, frozen vegetables, milk, and eggs. The volunteer would then deliver these products to the client’s home. Since the pandemic, though, the Chest has worked to minimize contact in the way the food is packaged and delivered to clients. “To maintain social distancing, we have prepackaged deliveries in the pantry, and then volunteers pick up the bags and go to (a market) in Lititz,” said Bjanes. “They call the (grocery) store, and the store loads a cart with a prepackaged amount of food, and then the volunteer (picks that up and) drives that to the client.” Readers wishing to know more about the self-service food drive may search for “Lititz Warwick Community Chest” on Facebook. Individuals who are in need of food or are interested in volunteering may call 717-627-0770.

We are praying for leaders on federal and state levels, he said. Following Wolf’s initial announcement, DCA students were off only three days before resuming their studies from home. According to Stone, staff at the school, which pulls students from 11 Lancaster County school districts, as well as eastern York County, had anticipated that March 13 might be the last day of school for a while. “Our elementary school teachers scrambled to put things together for students to take home just in case, recalled Stone, who added that the staff met at the school on March 16 to make

of building a student’s Christian character, and biblical reasoning to promote a lifetime of learning and discipleship. In finding a balance, Stone asked teachers to employ the technology the school has been using for more than a decade in new ways. “Our students are accustomed to getting on the computer and following instructions that a teacher has laid out, he said, noting that for a number of years DCA has employed a concept called the flipped classroom, where teachers introduce a concept by video and students work on problems at home before coming to the classroom to complete more problems with individual help from the teacher. Because of this, switching to learning online from home should not be difficult for the students, Stone said. “That’s not a big paradigm shift, he noted. Stone especially praised DCA’s elementary school teachers, who are generally not as accustomed to teaching online. WellSpan Health has opened care locations across southcentral Pennsylvania dedicated solely to providing nonemergency care for COVID-19 patients. Patients who have no emergent health needs and are either confirmed or suspected by a health care provider to have COVID-19 can visit one of these locations. WellSpan OB/GYN and WellSpan Pediatric Medicine, 2050 S. Queen St., York, will provide primary care services for children and all adults. This care location is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays
through Fridays, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. WellSpan Urgent Care, 101 Airport Road, Lititz, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. Additional locations are also available. Patients who may be experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 - including fever and cough, fever and shortness of breath, or all three - are asked to call their primary care provider. Individuals who do not have a primary care provider or who need additional information are encouraged to call WellSpan’s Coronavirus
Information Hotline at 855-851-3641. WellSpan continues to offer primary and urgent care services at care locations across the region for those who are not suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19. In addition, the health system encourages patients to take advantage of alternative care options, such as WellSpan Online Urgent Care, to receive care without the need to visit a care location in person. WellSpan Online Urgent Care allows patients to connect with a physician 24/7 using their computer, smartphone or
tablet. Readers may visit www.WellSpan.org/OUC to get started. More information and updates on WellSpan’s response to COVID-19 may be found at www.WellSpan.org/Coronavirus. WellSpan is seeking donations of supplies, materials, blood, services and other needs in response to COVID-19. To learn more about how to help during this time, readers may visit www.WellSpan.org/ Coronavirus and click the “I Want to Help” button or call the Coronavirus Information Hotline and select option 4.
