22nd “Messiah” Sing-Along Planned By Ann Mead Ash

For more than two decades, the “Messiah” Sing-Along has been held in Lancaster County. It has always been and remains a drop-in event. “The people can come as they are,” said Clair Leaman, who had conducted a “Messiah” Sing-Along in Chester County for more than a decade before organizing the Lancaster version. “Just stop in. There are no rehearsals.” The 22nd annual “Messiah” SingAlong will take place on Friday, April 26, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. No child care will be provided. Singers will begin arriving at 6:30 p.m. According to Leaman, about 150 singers from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties and even out of state typically take part. Leaman organizes them See “Messiah” Sing-Along pg 8

A Hands-On Fundraiser First Touch-A-Truck Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash

“When my girls were teenagers, we heard of ‘If You Find This Letter,’” said Deanna Riccardelli, a member of More Love Letters Lancaster, referring to a memoir by Hannah Brencher, who began writing letters to strangers in New York City when she found herself struggling emotionally. “She would write the kinds of things she wanted to hear,” explained Riccardelli, noting that Brencher found that sharing and encouraging others helped her out of her own depression. After Brencher wrote about her experiences, she founded The World Needs More Love Letters, and a movement was born. “(I) did this with my daughters six or seven years ago,” recalled Riccardelli. See More Love Letters pg 3

“This is our first Touch-A-Truck, and it’s a great fit for our mission,” said Becca Stamp, development and community relations coordinator with Hands-on

House and one of the organizers of the first Hands-on House Touch-A-Truck fundraiser. “It’s a hands-on activity.” Hands-on House Children’s Museum of Lancaster, 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, will hold Touch-A-Truck on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 12 trucks are lined up to be present in the Hands-on House parking See Touch-A-Truck pg 7

Deanna Riccardelli (left), Jennifer Oehme Knepper (center), and Riccardelli’s son, Levi, worked on writing letters of encouragement when More Love Letters Lancaster met on Feb. 22. The group meets monthly for the purpose of supporting those in need of encouragement with handwritten letters.

A fire truck will be among the many vehicles filling the parking lot at the Hands-on House’s first Touch-A-Truck, to be held on April 27 at the museum.

Free Community Fair Scheduled

More Love Letters from pg 1 “We would leave love letters around the city (of Lancaster).” More recently, when Brencher asked for people to gather and write more love letters, Riccardelli decided to get involved. “(More Love Letters is) trying to build community groups (that) write to (others) in the community who need encouragement,” she explained. On Feb. 22, Riccardelli and Jennifer Oehme Knepper met at a small café in Lancaster to write. It was the third month that More Love Letters had met. The group, which Knepper noted usually includes up to seven individuals, moves its meeting location in order to support local businesses. “Today we wrote letters to those people listed on the website,” noted Riccardelli, explaining that the individuals on the More Love Letters website are nominated by others who write down the nominees’ stories. Six letter recipients are chosen each month. “Last month the group focused on people in the local community who could use encouragement,” explained Riccardelli, who added that the group would love to receive nominations of area residents who could benefit from an uplifting letter. “We have watched for (people) in the news. It doesn’t have to be something major,” shared Riccardelli, who added that someone who has broken a leg and is housebound might appreciate a letter. Recipients might also receive a letter that is more congratulatory than consoling. “If they are doing something amazing, we tell them, ‘We see you and appreciate what you’re doing,’” said Riccardelli. Knepper emphasized the significance

April 10, 2019 - 3

of a handwritten letter in a time when texting and email are more often the methods by which people communicate. “We always connected with writing, and we’ve lost that,” she said. Riccardelli agreed. “In your mailbox, you have bills, flyers, and junk, but when you find something personally handwritten in there … it’s super exciting to see,” she said. “We keep talking about times in our lives when people have sent us letters,” noted Riccardelli. “I have received letters from strangers. You wouldn’t think that could be encouraging, but it can be.” Knepper noted that she has cherished letters that were sent to her after her father died. When the two women and Riccardelli’s son, Levi, met on Feb. 22, one of the letters they wrote was to a veteran who was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. “We are sitting here trying not to weep over this one letter,” said Riccardelli. Knepper noted that there are benefits to the letter writers as well as the recipients. “What (Brencher) did was therapeutic,” noted Knepper. “On our end it is too.” “It gives you perspective in life,” added Riccardelli. Although the groups has been meeting in the mornings, Knepper noted that some evening meetings may be set in order to allow more interested people to take part. Children are welcome as long as parents bring along quiet activities to keep the children occupied. Readers who would like to learn more may search for “More Love Letters Lancaster” on Facebook or Instagram.

Boys’ Lacrosse Sits Second in Section Standings by Vaughn Brown

Facing the top two boys’ lacrosse teams in Section One last week, Warwick faltered and took its first two divisional losses, dropping into second place in the process. Hempfield and Manheim Township remained tied for first at the end of last week and were both winners over the Warriors, 10-4 and 15-3, respectively. Following a scoreless first quarter against the Black Knights last Monday, Warwick surrendered five goals in the second, and unable to slow down the Hempfield attack despite Alex Epple’s 13 saves, the Warriors were outscored 5-3 in the second half. Justin Gerhart had two goals while Conor Adams and Cayden Rihn added one apiece. Carter Davis and Hilton Michael each contributed one assist as well. Giving up an 8-0 first quarter against MT, Warwick never recovered in the 12-goal loss with only Adams, Davis, and Jonathon Forbes each recording a goal. Down 11-1, MT added four goals in the second half with Warwick scoring two goals late in the game. Epple again had 12 saves while Gerhart and Austin Barto each recorded an offensive assist. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Warwick’s girls had a three-game stretch that also included Section

leaders Manheim Township and Hempfield with Conestoga Valley thrown in as well. The Warriors struggled early, losing to the Knights 16-4 and then dropping a 20-1 decision against the Streaks before almost coming back to win in the 11-8 loss to the Buckskins. Outshot 24-7 last Monday, Warwick conceded 11 Hempfield goals in the first half while posting only one before settling in and tallying three goals in the second. Tanner Armstrong and Zoe Sheppard accounted for Warwick’s scoring as each put away two while Zoe Stauffer stopped eight in goal. Armstrong scored once in the second half against Manheim Township on Thursday to account for Warwick’s offense which only mustered four shots on goal for the day. The Blue Streaks entered halftime with an 11-0 lead and added nine goals in the second while firing off 36 shots, 16 of which Stauffer turned away in the loss. The ladies traveled to Conestoga Valley on Friday for a more balanced competition that included a 17-14 output of shots in favor of CV. Both squads battled for an advantage, with the nod going to the Buckskins who built a 7-3 lead by halftime. Warwick, led by two goals each from Emma Leister, Armstrong,

Martin, and Sheppard, tallied five goals in the second half. In goal, Stauffer was able to deny six Buckskin shots on the day. SOFTBALL Riding high after a week that saw Warwick go 3-1, including a big 11-5 win over Hempfield, the Warriors were alone at the top of Section One. With wins over McCaskey, 20-4, the Black Knights, and Cedar Crest, 15-0, Warwick’s only hiccup came against Section Three leader Donegal in a 5-0 loss. Scoring in each of the four innings of a run-shortened game against McCaskey last Monday, Warwick got production from every level of the lineup as well as a strong, four-hit performance from pitchers Katelyn Minney and Marissa Treibley. Only throwing three pitches, Minney struck out the lone batter she faced before handing the ball to Treibley who finished the game with two earned runs on four hits and six strikeouts. Warwick led in the first when Minney (3-5, 6RBI) lined an inside the park home run to center field that scored Emily Beale (2-2, 4RBI), while a RBI triple by Danielle Jones (3-4, RBI) helped lead the Warriors to a 6-0 advantage. Warwick’s only hardship came in the form of a four-run inning by McCaskey in the third, making it 16-4, but another four runs scored by

the Warriors in the fourth ended the day early for both teams. Two big innings, a four run first and seven run fourth, helped propel Warwick over Hempfield last Wednesday. The Warriors enjoyed a 13-10 hit advantage in which they were able to manufacture more runs than the Knights. Minney threw the complete game, surrendering all five earned runs with eight strikeouts and only one walk while going 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI at the plate. Jones smacked two triples in her 2-4 effort, earning two RBI on her second hit of the day while Treibley (3-4, 2RBI), Beale (2-3, RBI), Stewart (2-3, RBI), Brubaker (1-1, 2RBI) and Forsythe (1-3) also contributed to the winning effort. Getting the start versus the Falcons on Thursday, Treibley threw the complete, five inning shutout with only five hits and five strikeouts. She also drove in four runs on three hits, while Jones tripled in her 3-3 effort at the plate with three RBI. A huge, 10-run first inning by the Warriors built all the momentum they needed as they added two runs in the third and three in the fifth on 16 hits. In Mount Joy on Saturday, with Donegal leading 1-0 after two, the teams played three and a half scoreless innings before the Indians blew up in the sixth by scoring four

runs in the bottom half of the inning. Donegal pitcher Sierra Neiss then overcame a wild pitch that hit Clugston to open the seventh, retiring the side and leaving Clugston stranded on first to end the game.

answered with another run in the second after a hit batter and a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt put Zach Shertzer (1-3) and Jeff Kline (2-2) in scoring position with one out. Colby Martin (1-3, RBI) then singled into left field, scoring Shertzer from third and tying the game at 3-3. Hempfield added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to go up 6-3, but more drama ensued in the seventh before the game was finalized. After a Martin walk with one out advanced Kline to second, Dagen Young (2-4, RBI) singled into left, scoring Kline and moving Martin to third. Seibert followed with a pop-up into right for the second out, and then with a full count, Heller lined a pitch straight back to relief pitcher Adam Blough who made a superb catch to end the game. A two run second inning against McCaskey last Monday proved the difference as Warwick held on to win 2-1. A triple by Brendan Martin (1-2, RBI) scored Heller (0-1) who reached on a walk, followed by a Colin Beech (1-3, RBI) ground out brought Martin home to put the eventual final run on the board. Jackson Davies picked up the win, pitching four innings of six hit ball with six strikeouts and one run scored. Colin Brubaker and Martin combined in relief with Martin getting the save.

Minney, though only allowing one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts, took the loss as the Warriors had three errors and a wild pitch during that sixth inning attack by the Indians. She also represented the only two hits of the game for Warwick, including a double in the fifth.

BASEBALL After winning two games and losing one last week, Warwick was in a tie for second place in Section One with Manheim Township with both teams trailing Hempfield. It was the Black Knights that handed the Warriors the 6-4 loss in a game that played out just as it should have when two top teams play each other with four lead changes before it was all said and done. Warwick jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its first at bat when Ethan Heller (1-4, 2RBI) singled into center with two outs, driving home both courtesy runner Evan Rohrbach and John Seibert (1-4). Three Warwick errors in the bottom of the first led to a three-run inning by Hempfield, but Warwick

MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition Ending the week strong against Cedar Crest, Warwick scored in all but third inning, including a five-run sixth to secure the 12-2 victory. Josh Farina (3-4 RBI) tripled and doubled to lead at the plate while Heller (2-4, RBI) and Martin (1-4, RBI) also hit doubles as well. Rohrbach earned the win, giving up two runs on four hits while Beech came on in the fifth to close things out. TRACK & FIELD With wins over McCaskey last Monday, both the boys’ and girls’ teams remained in first place. The boys, tied with Manheim Township, beat the Red Tornado 93-57 while the girls remained alone at the top with an 88-62 victory. The team of Noah Martin, Connor Shields, Marcus Wachira, and Jeremy Bell not only helped lead Warwick to a 3-0 sweep of the relays, but their time of 8:26.5 in the 3200 also broke track record set two years ago by Manheim Township. Sean Bedessa, Ryan Fegley, Christian Hess, and Guernel Marcellus finished the 400 in a time of 44.7, while Jacob Smith, Bell, Fegley, and Shields (3:33.3) took the 1600 to complete the shutout. Nick Coomer won both the shot put (52-5) and discus (127-1), and

teammate Nathan Good had the best height in both the high jump (6-4) and pole vault (11-6) to represent the only individual multi winners, while Bell (4:39.4) won the 1600, Shields (52.1) took the 400, Smith (2:07.0) was best in the 800, Fegley (22.3) won the 200, and Martin (10:11.6) ran the fastest time of the 3200. For the girls, it was Lily Palacio-Lewis who ran the 100 in 11.6 and the 200 in 25.2 to claim two individual wins while also taking part in the winning 400 relay. She teamed with Leah Graybill, Emily Williamson, and Meghan Quinn for the best time of 48.0, while Aubrey Williamson, Emily Williamson, Graybill, and Quinn (4:03.7) also took the 1600. Other winners included Anna Martin (5:29.8) in the 1600, and Graybill (57.2) in the 400, while Kate Dickow (11:54.8) won the 3200, Madelyn Snavely (88-0) was best in the discus, Trinity Bitting-Ellis (5-0) took the high jump, and Katy Kramer (7-9) won the pole vault. VOLLEYBALL In a huge 3-1 win over Hempfield on Thursday, the first in nine years for Warwick, the Warriors took sole possession of first place in Section One. They also defeated Cedar Crest

3-0 last Tuesday to set up the showdown with the Knights. It was not easy, though, as each game was tightly contested, 25-20, 25-18, 12-25, and 25-23. Led by Chad Meeder’s 23 kills and Mateo Chacon’s 14 digs, the Warriors gutted out the victory, despite the dominating third game won by Hempfield in which they took complete control of the action.

Trey Miller added two service aces as well. TENNIS Warwick’s struggles continued last week as the Warriors lost all four matches they played to remain winless on the season. They began the week with a 6-1 loss to Hempfield, followed by a 7-0 defeat at Manheim Photo by Jeremy Madea Central, a 5-2 loss to Garden Spot, and Justin Gerhart handles the ball for the Warriors during their 10-4, a 5-0 loss to Elizabethtown. lot that day. Attendees may park at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, and they will be shuttled to the event. During the fundraiser, attendees of all ages will be able to view and touch a variety of vehicles. “We have (scheduled) a variety of vehicles that we are excited about,” said Stamp, who listed a fire truck, a police car, construction vehicles, a dump truck, a cement mixer, a garbage truck, a television truck, and a skid steer loader among those that will be present. “The Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) has a BearCat, and that is coming out,” said Stamp, who added that she thinks children of all ages will be excited to see the militarystyle armored vehicle. One unusual vehicle that will take part in the event will travel from its home at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg to Hands-on House. “The VanGo! is coming,” said Seth Cluley, exhibits and creative director at Handson House. The VanGo! is a mobile art museum housed in a former motorhome. “The exhibit that is in it right now is all about optical illusions,” explained Cluley, who added that paintings and sculptures will be among the items found in the exhibit. Perhaps the most unique-looking vehicle at the Touch-A-Truck event will be the Hershey Kissmobile. Formerly a promotional vehicle for the candy company, the Kissmobile is now used for promotional community events. To nourish hungry visitors to the Touch-A-Truck event, Hands-on House has arranged for - what else? - food

trucks to park alongside the other vehicles on display. “We will have a sandwich truck and a treat truck,” said Cluley. “We typically don’t have food here, but it’s part of the event, and it’s a truck.” Touch-A-Truck is a departure from past Hands-on House fundraisers. Cluley noted that the organization chose it after searching for an event that would appeal to a broad audience. Stamp added that she hopes the gathering will introduce families to first responders and others from around the county. “We are looking at this as an opportunity for families to connect with our community and have a hands-on experience,” she said. There is a per-person cost to attend the Touch-A-Truck. Advance tickets for those age 2 and up may be purchased at www.handsonhouse.org. Children under the age of 2 will be admitted free. Tickets purchased prior to the day of the event will be discounted. Funds raised by the Touch-A-Truck will benefit educational programming and exhibits of Hands-on House, a museum for children that first opened in 1987 in a Victorian house located nearby along Landis Valley Road. In February of 2000, the museum moved to its current location and nearly doubled its floor space. Handson House is a nonprofit organization that exists to use play to create landmark experiences for children ages 2 to 10. Hands-on House will be open during Touch-A-Truck, and event attendees will receive a coupon for discounted admission to Hands-on House that will be good for one visit through Sunday, May 26. The Hands-on House Touch-A-Truck will be held rain or shine.

The Lancaster County Conservation District recently recognized efforts in natural resource conservation in Lancaster County at its 68th awards banquet. Sara Xenophon, Kristen Kyler, and Jennifer Fetter, staff members of the Penn State Ag and the Environment Center, were honored as valuable partners in countless conservation and watershed projects throughout Lancaster County. Project highlights include the Conewago Watershed Initiative, the Little Conestoga Watershed Partnership, and the Chiques Creek Watershed Reenvisioned Project. Their work to establish a group of volunteers for tree plantings and their ability to work hand in hand with the Conservation District has improved water quality throughout the county. Lisa Hochreiter, agriculture educator at Warwick High School, received the Conservation Educator Award for her dedicated teaching, her commitment as an Envirothon adviser, and her support of student projects helping the local community in watershed cleanup events, trout stocking, and tree planting in riparian buffers. Mark Layton, wildlife center manager at Refreshing Mountain Retreat Center, was recognized with the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School Service Award. For several years, Layton has given his time to instruct teenagers enrolled in the field school about the conservation of reptiles and amphibians. Hands-on experience with local native species has helped to instill an appreciation and respect for the habitat needs of a variety of species. John Haldeman, roadmaster for Rapho Township, accepted the Outstanding Low Volume Road Project Award for the township’s innovation that involved reusing a culvert pipe in the redesign of a low-volume

countries where partners are located. Many of these partners have a connection with LMC through mission work led by Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). Historically, LMC fraternal bishops would provide a connection to these partners. In 2018, Mennonite World Conference (MWC) officially accepted LMC as a full member. However, LMC still sees a need to focus on specific relationships with its international partners. According to LMC, there is a diminishing presence of EMM workers among many of these partners, less connection with fraternal bishops, and fewer administrator visits from EMM’s Central Administrative Office, meaning there is a need to find new ways to strengthen the LMC-to-national church relationships. LMC’s delegates will begin relating to those partner churches that are now autonomous.

The delegate role involves maintaining regular communication with the partner, working with relevant EMM staff for joint trips, attending significant events of the partner, engaging with a new generation of the partner church’s leaders, coordinating visits to LMC regions from partners, and additional tasks. While delegates bring a wealth of relational value to these global relationships, they do not make decisions on financial matters. Instead, their primary functions are to listen and engage with faith, discipleship, and church life issues pertaining to LMC and the partner. Serving as volunteers for renewable five-year terms, delegates are formally appointed by LMC, but the discernment process may include insight from EMM staff and leadership of the partner church. Tom Eshleman, the pastor of Groffdale Mennonite Church, serves as LMC’s global delegate, relating to international partners and overseeing the new international partner delegate system. International partner delegates are encouraged to raise their own funds for expenses. LMC also contacts the delegates’ church districts and other supporters to request funding. As funds are received, LMC manages the financial accounts for each delegate. On Feb. 15 and 16, the current delegates gathered with both LMC and Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) staff at Mennonite Central Committee’s Welcoming Place in Akron for an initial orientation. EMM staff provided resourcing for the orientation, covering topics such as ministry philosophies, histories of respective partners, missiological and anthropological resources, and pragmatic education on international partnerships.

LMC Chooses International Partner Delegates LMC - A Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches has announced a new international partner delegate system aimed at building stronger relationships among groups in the global church. This approach responds to a call for direct involvement by more leaders, along with a more defined framework to facilitate these connections. LMC plans to assign a person or couple to each area where the organization has global relationships. Currently, delegates have been assigned to four partners. The pairings are Glenn and June Kauffman with Conference of Mennonite Churches in Hong Kong, Bill and Judy Houser with Iglesia Evangélica Menonita de Belice, Steve and Beth Gibbs with Iglesia Evangélica Menonita del Perú, and Joe and Yvonne Garber with Kanisa la Mennonite Tanzania. LMC currently identifies a total of 23

The event drew more than 160 attendees. The event featured 14 different stops, with tidbits and morsels created by UZRC staff members and residents as well as local chocolate companies. Guests also participated in a silent auction featuring gift cards and certificates, admission tickets and experiences, artwork, gift bags and other items. Proceeds will go toward benevolent care, which will enable residents to continue receiving the same quality care and services should their own resources become unable to cover the full cost of care.
