Karen Beatty performs an ordinary

Sometimes, the most common occupations are the most important ones, and the most overlooked.

Karen Beatty could do a lot of things, but she chooses to drive a bus. Yeah, the money’s nice, and, sure, the hours are flexible, but the position really fits Beatty’s outgoing personality, her meticulous nature and her good-hearted character.

Besides, when you’re passionate about what you do, you become good at it, and when you’re good at something, you become passionate about it. It’s a two-way street.

“I ask myself how I want to be treated and how I would want my

kids to be treated,” said Beatty. “I love my community. I love my school district. I love being part of my community.”

Beatty, or “Miss Karen” to some, is employed by Shultz Transportation and operates a school bus in the Warwick School District, among others. Over the last 10 years, she’s been the lady behind the wheel of bus No. 39, quick with a pleasant “good morning,” always wearing a bright smile on her face, while never taking her eyes off the road.

“I’m the first person kids see at the beginning of their school day and the last person kids see at the end of their school day,” said Beatty.

“I’m a very good driver. I am trying to keep your kids safe and drive.

Most bus drivers really do care about your kids. We’re focused on the safety of kids, on the bus and around the bus. If bus drivers are saying something to kids, it’s probably about a safety issue.”

With 30 to 40 students on board, Beatty makes two different Lititz-area runs twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Each run consists of six or seven stops, and on the average, Beatty drives her bus 35 miles a day, five days a week throughout the school year.

But Beatty also helps out with the bus driving for extracurricular activities like band.

“It’s a professional job,” said Beatty. “I’m not their (the stu-

dents’) aunt or grandma. Physical touch is not allowed in any way. You really can’t get attached, but you do care about them. They’re in my heart and in my prayers.”

Before becoming a bus driver, Beatty, who possesses a college degree in psychology, homeschooled her seven now-grown children. When she first started driving 13 years ago, it was a way to supplement her family’s income, while continuing to teach and raise her kids.

At some point, Beatty’s occupational line between practicality and sentimentality became blurred.

“I could be doing other things,” said Beatty. “But it’s a fun job. I love doing it. It’s a job that has flexibility. It’s weekends and summers off.”

through history

One would be hard-pressed to compact more history into a shorter period of time - or distance.

Following a successful debut last year, the Lititz Historic Walking Tour has made a triumphant return. Conducted by the Lititz Historical Foundation, the 45-minute guided walking tour treats curious participants to 270 years’ worth of fascinating stories and backstories of the people and events that helped shape the borough.

“The goal is to explain the history of Lititz in an all-new way,” said Lititz Historical Foundation president Cory Van Brookhoven, who doubles as one of the tour’s guides. “The tour focuses on the history and architecture. So far, it’s been a hit. It’s a perfect activity for people visiting Lititz. When I visit a new place, I always want to learn about its history.”

The Lititz Historic Walking Tour begins at the town square, located at the corner of Broad and East Main streets, and proceeds east for eight blocks to Linden Hall School for Girls. Along the way, the tour stops at 25 historically significant locations, all without crossing the street.

The Lititz Historical Foundation began offering the tours on April 1 and will continue doing so through the end of October.

Brubaker-Wagner

Bruce and Valerie Wagner of Lititz have announced the engagement of their son, Michael Wagner of Lititz, to Kathryn Brubaker of Ephrata.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Eric and Linda Brubaker of Ephrata. She graduated from Ephrata High School in 2022 and is employed by Martin Paving in Lititz.

The groom-to-be graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2018 and is

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

“We feel it’s a really great value,” said Van Brookhoven. “Lititz is very historic. There’s a lot packed in there.”

Van Brookhoven pointed out that the number of visitors who have taken the Lititz Historic Walking Tour this year has already surpassed the tour’s number of visitors in all of 2022.

“Last year was kind of like a soft launch,” said Van Brookhoven. “Basically, we wanted to test the waters, and it gave us good data. I think we have created momentum. We started out, and already we’ve expanded it in a big way. It’s just one of the many services we offer to the visitors of Lititz.”

While the vast majority of the Lititz Historic Walking Tour’s attendees have been tourists, Van Brookhoven said

that he’s been pleasantly surprised by the number of locals on the tours. Apparently, a love of history cannot be defined by place of residence.

“It’s a really nice mixed bag,” said Van Brookhoven. “It’s not just tourists. It’s also locals and locals who are hosting friends from out of town. We’re also seeing a lot of school groups.”

There is a cost involved with taking the Lititz Historic Walking Tour, and senior citizens and students are afforded discounts. The tours are offered four times a day, at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., on Mondays through Saturdays, and visitors are requested to book them in advance by visiting www.lititzhistorical foundation.com or by dialing 717-627-4636.

Kids Fishing Derby will promote outdoor fun

“It’s so important to give kids a taste of the outdoors,” said Scot Harlacher, a member of the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA). That’s the goal of the organization’s annual Kids Fishing Derby.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 15, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the reflecting pond on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. The derby is open to all youths age 11 and under

as well as all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license.

“This is a really fun event,” Harlacher noted. “We have kids who this is like Christmas morning for them. It’s that same level of excitement.”

He also noted that the event is a multigenerational experience. “We have parents who went to this as kids and now they’re bringing their own kids,” he stated, noting that the event has been held at the church since the late 1990s.

The DFCA will stock the pond with more than 300

brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout. Participants will have the opportunity to catch up to five fish per person to take home. All fishermen must bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. DFCA members will be on hand until 11:30 a.m. to help fishermen, but all fishing will stop at 11 a.m.

The church will host a pancake breakfast during the event, and the meal will be open to the general public. It will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall and will feature a menu of pancakes, sausage and juice, with coffee available for a separate charge. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the church’s annual mission trip to upstate New York. “This is one of our main fundraisers for that trip,” said Harlacher, who is a member of the church. “We’ve been going on this trip for more than 20 years to perform home rehabilitation projects.”

He noted that the fishing derby will be held rain or shine, and he encourages participants to come out no matter the weather. “Come early, bring your own equipment and come prepared to have fun,” he said. “Even if the

Getting a hands-on introduction to construction

For three days in March, more than 200 middle school students got a firsthand look at careers in the construction industry at ABC Keystone’s Construction Wars. The students had the opportunity for hands-on work with industry professionals in the carpentry, masonry, sheet metal fab-

rication, electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades.

Represented schools in Lancaster and York counties included Garden Spot Middle School in Eastern Lancaster County School District; Gerald G. Huesken Middle School in Conestoga Valley School District; Manor Middle School in the Penn Manor School District; Warwick Middle

weather is a little unfavorable, you can come in and warm up in the church, have breakfast and head back out to fish some more.”

All participants must register with the DFCA on the day of the derby. Parking will be permitted only in the Donegal Presbyterian Church parking area, with no street parking.

The DFCA is a local nonprofit organization focused on restoring the Donegal watershed to its original state. On Tuesday, April 18, the organization will dedicate a bridge at 617 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, to Ken Depoe, the DFCA’s founder. Depoe started the organization in 1965, said Brandon Crouser, president of the organization.

State Sen. Ryan Aument will be present at the dedication ceremony, which will take place at 11 a.m.

For more information about the DFCA or to help with the derby, contact Crouser at 717-538-4370.

QuintEssentially Brass quintet to perform

Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 36 Church St., Rothsville, will host QuintEssentially Brass in concert on Sunday, April 23, at 3 p.m. as part of its Music at Jerusalem series.

Formed in 2009, the brass quintet consists of Doug Albert, trumpet; Gene Clark, trumpet; Kristen Albert, French horn; Andy Walls, trombone; and Geoff Davis, tuba. The group has per-

formed extensively throughout the Susquehanna Valley, including concerts at the Ware Center in Lancaster and the Mount Gretna Tabernacle.

The program will include “Rigaudon” by André Campra,

“Morning Song” by J. Scott Irvine, “Pavane” from Symphonette No. 2 by Morton Gould, “Voluntary on Old 100th” by Henry Purcell, “Light Vibrations” by Sammy Nestico, “Soli Deo Gloria” by William Himes, and “Allegro Maestoso” from “Water Music” by George Frideric Handel. The performance will also include arrangements of the hymn “This Is My Father’s World,” the popular song “Fly Me to the Moon,” and three hits written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for The Beatles“Eleanor Rigby,” “Michelle,” and “Penny Lane.”

A freewill offering will be received. Handicapped-accessible parking is available on the right side of the building, with elevator access through the double glass doors under the canopy. For more information, call the church office at 717-626-8972.

“We offer this event to provide middle school students with exposure and awareness of our industry and hopefully spark their interest as they are making decisions moving into high school,” shared Stephanie R. Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development for ABC Keystone. Larkin explained that students created a variety of take-home projects during the event, including a sheet metal toolbox and a wooden bench. Additionally, they wired lightbulbs and created a circuit, laid brick, were introduced to basic safety and CPR and learned about refrigeration.

Now is the time for students to consider careers in construction, Larkin said, noting that the demand for trade skills grows annually. Average wages for some trades are

$70,000 per year, and apprentices participate in earn-whileyou-learn programs, allowing them to access educational opportunities while working, with the potential to graduate debt free. She also emphasized that the industry provides multiple education and career pathways, ranging from apprenticeship to journey-level worker to business owner.

ABC Keystone has held the event for more than five years, and Larkin remarked that it requires support from the community to pull it off. “The event is only possible because we have 30 to 35 volunteers each day and very generous member sponsors who provide hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, T-shirts, construction materials and lunches, along with items for goodie bags,” she said.

Parkinson’s Community Walk set

HARTZ Physical Therapy, in partnership with CrushPD Fitness and the Red Rose Parkinson’s Lecture Series and Support Group, will celebrate Parkinson’s Awareness Month, April, with a Parkinson’s Community Walk on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Manheim Township Community Park, Petersburg Road, Lancaster. In addition to the walk, the event will include resources and information from vendors along with games and other activities.

The Red Rose Parkinson’s Lecture Series and Support Group, founded in April 2022 by HARTZ Physical Therapy and CrushPD Fitness, meets on the first Wednesday of every month and features speakers from nutritionists and speech language pathologists to holistic therapists and representatives of Parkinson’s

foundations. The meetings have grown consistently and are open to people with Parkinson’s, along with their caregivers, family members, and friends.

Greta Myers, a neurological physical therapist at HARTZ Physical Therapy, was instrumental in putting together this group. In addition to her growing list of Parkinson’s patients, she treats people with multiple sclerosis and is a Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist. Myers is active in the community and speaks at various events on the importance of physical therapy and the circle of care that is needed for those with Parkinson’s disease.

There is a fee to participate in the walk, and all walkers who register by Friday, April 14, will receive a free T-shirt. To register, visit www .hartzpt.com/community /parkinsons-walk/.

Main St., Lititz, on Sunday, April 16, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. During the launch, Whipple will read excerpts from the book, sign copies and answer questions from the audience. “Enough Is …” is illustrated by Nicole Wong and is published by Tilbury House, marking the first time that Whipple has had a book released through a publisher.

“Enough Is …” follows the story of a young girl who learns the difference between her wants and needs as she seeks to feel content. Whipple said that her goal when writing the book was to address an important topic that applies to those of any age, but in a way that kids can understand it. “The book is about the concept of enough, contentment, trying to illustrate and explain to kids that it’s a tricky thing,” Whipple said. “Embracing it can be uncomfortable, but hopefully the more times you experience it, the more comfortable you are with it.”

Whipple was inspired to write the book by her experiences as a parent. Many of the concepts that she touches on in her book are things that she has tried to impress upon her two daughters, who are now 10 and 7 years old. When her eldest was 3 years old and her other daughter was an infant, Whipple found herself struggling to simplify the idea of contentment to her children but also grappled with

the idea in her own life with her own wants and needs. “I had to find that sweet spot of contentment,” Whipple said.

“I hope that by the end of the book, readers will realize that it’s a feeling you can get used to.”

In August, Whipple will release a second book, titled “I Think I Think a Lot.” Her second published work focuses on the life of a child who wrestles with overthinking and anxiety. The protagonist constantly compares herself to others and feels inadequate, but she learns to appreciate what makes her unique and to see the positive sides of negative feelings. Although the book does not explicitly describe its main character as someone with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the story draws from Whipple’s personal experience growing up with OCD. “There’s not really a lot out there about OCD that reads like a picture book. Growing up, I found the only resources are books from therapists and workbooks,” Whipple said. “‘I Think I Think a Lot’ brings that experience to normal life and beyond the therapist’s office, as a way to help kids view the world in a different way.”

Whipple, who is originally from Pittsburgh, moved to Lancaster in 2020. She first began writing poetry as a teenager and has spent the majority of her career working as a copywriter. After becoming a parent, she started to write poetry again and wanted to translate her work to a picture book format. “I think picture books are their own type of poetry; my different experiences as a writer have come together as I work on them,” Whipple said.

“Enough Is …” is available at independent bookstores as well as large retailers such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon. For more information, visit www.authorjessicawhipple.com.
