The Penryn Church Grove will hold a spring chicken corn soup sale and bake sale on Saturday, April 27. The Grove is located at the end of Picnic Grove Road in the town of Penryn. Homemade chicken corn soup and bake sale items will be available from 8 a.m. to noon or until the soup is sold out. Individuals are asked to bring their own non-Tupperware containers. There is a set price per quart for the soup.

How To Get Away In PA Second Family Travel Fair Planned By Ann Mead Ash
“Annually, the U.S. Travel Association says 705 million vacation days are left unused. That is a lot,” said Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and an organizer of the second PA Family Travel Fair. “For people who live in Pennsylvania, there is so much to do within a short distance. Everyone recognizes Philly and Pittsburgh, but there is so much in the middle people aren’t aware of,” noted Royal. Following the success of the first fair in spring 2018, Royal has lined up exhibitors, along with amusements for children, food for purchase, and opportunities to win prizes, for the second free event, which will be held at
Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In 2018, Royal noted that much of the state would be represented in some way at the fair, but this year, she promises even more. “We will have a lot of new exhibitors,” said Royal, noting that most of last year’s exhibitors will be returning. New this year, will be Sesame Place, Elk Country Visitors Center, and the Little League Museum. McKean County, location of the Allegheny National Forest and the famous Kinzua Bridge, a former railroad bridge that is now a tourist attraction, will be represented, along with the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Area, which covers five counties in the northern region. For the past two years, the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary has struggled with wet weather on the days the organization held its annual Ride for Literacy. In 2017, a downpour interrupted the ride, and in 2018, the day started rainy, but cleared up later on. Luther Acres Sets Wellness Fair

Luther Acres, a Luthercare senior living community located at 600 E. Main St., Lititz, will host its eighth annual Wellness Fair and Open House on Thursday, April 25. The day will feature educational seminars from 8:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a health fair from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The health fair is themed “Treasure Your Health!” and will take place in the Community Room at the Luther Acres Towne Center, at 250 St. Luke Drive, Lititz. The day’s events are open to the public, and there is no cost to attend. The open house will feature tours of a one-bedroom apartment and a two-bedroom cottage. Visitors will have the opportunity to speak with sales counselors. Health fair attendees can visit with more than 35 vendors who will answer health-related questions and provide various screenings, including bone density, blood sugar, circulation, hearing, and eye/foot reaction time. Hand massages and health food tastings will be available. There will be many opportunities to play games and win small prizes. Sunrise Rotary from pg 1 To make the Ride for Literacy appealing to bicycle enthusiasts at a variety of riding levels, the event will offer four routes with names that correspond to types of literature. The 10-mile family ride is called the Short Story. The Novella will travel through 21 miles of Lancaster countryside, and the Trilogy will span 43 miles of area scenery, showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges. The Epic Metric Century ride of 100 kilometers (approximately 62 miles) will be available to challenge the most adventurous riders. An optional hill stage called the Cat’s Back challenge will be offered near Fairmount in Ephrata. Ride participants will find water and rest stops located along each of the marked routes. Cue sheets, SAG support, sports beverages, snacks, and comfort stations will also be provided to registered riders. A lunch will be available at the park for riders. In 2018, the Rotary Club partnered with The Common Wheel, an organization that works to provide bikes for people and encourage a culture of biking for transportation as well as recreation. The park became a dropoff location, with club members accepting quality, gently used bikes throughout the ride. This year, the partnership will continue, and riders and nonriders are invited to donate bikes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. One of the organization’s programs works to empower youths through hands-on skills they learn by repairing their own bicycles after school and in the summer. The organization also works with social service agencies to provide bikes for those in need. More information about the organization may be found at www.thecommonwheel.com. Sunrise Rotary Club president Bill Ross noted that starting this year, the club is offering a new more inclusive sponsorship package for local businesses and individuals. “We have a car show in Neffsville in the fall, and we are looking for annual sponsorships to include both events,� explained Ross. The 2019 car show will be held in the Neffsville Park in September. The club has long partnered with the Literary Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, and a portion of what is raised by the ride will be donated to that organization. The club also supports other local community organizations
and helps fund international missions, such as sending eye doctors to the Dominican Republic, Nepal, and parts of Africa. The club sends area students to Rotary Youth Leadership Awards at Messiah College. Sunrise Rotary has also formed a relationship with Carter and MacRae Elementary School in the School District of Lancaster, and the club donates books to the school. Lititz UMC Schedules Holy Week Events Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC), 201 E. Market St., has announced Easter services and activities during Holy Week. Each event represents a celebration of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. The community is welcome to attend. On Maundy Thursday, April 18, a joint service with Brunnerville United Methodist Church and LUMC will begin at 7 p.m. at LUMC. The gathering will remind attendees that when Jesus was arrested, His friends and disciples fell away from Him. The service will progress from light to dark and symbolizes the various shadows that surrounded Jesus and His cross prior to His death. On Good Friday, April 19, beginning at 7 p.m., LUMC will host a spirit-filled contemporary service where attendees will walk the road to the cross with Christ through song and film. Film clips
of the movie “The Passion� will be shown. Easter Sunday, April 21, will feature three services. At 7 a.m., there will be a dawn service in the prayer garden on the south side of the front entrance. “Sunrise Surprise� will tell the traditional Easter morning story through the eyes and words of Mary Magdalene, John, Peter, and Jesus. A pancake breakfast will follow at 7:45 a.m. in the social hall. Water Street Mission The fifth annual Feed the Need Food Drive has launched to benefit Water Street Mission (WSM). The event seeks to collect 3,500 pounds of food or more during the month of April. Over the past four food drives, Feed the Need has provided more than 12,000 pounds of food to WSM at a time when the holiday food drive donations begin to run out. Community members are welcome to donate food items through Tuesday, April 30, during normal business hours at HARTZ Physical Therapy’s five locations: 100 Highlands Drive, Suite 100, Lititz; 90 Good Drive, Suite 201, Lancaster; 804 New Holland Ave., Lancaster; 1635 W. Main St., Suite 500, Ephrata; and 755 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Items sought include all-purpose flour; all kinds of rice; salad dressings; peanut butter; jelly; canned fruit and vegetables; beef and chicken stock; pancake mix and syrup; apple juice; ketchup; mustard; mayonnaise; sugar, brown sugar,
and sugar packets; canned yams and sweet potatoes; canned meats such as tuna, chicken, and spam; cereal, oatmeal (not instant), and grits; pepper; garlic and onion powder; coffee, beans or ground; pasta; and spaghetti sauce. Containers should not be glass. WSM will use the donations to serve free meals and provide free pantry items to men, women, and children in need. Good pointed out that McLaren’s talk should be helpful to all members of a church. “Faith leaders are an important part of this conversation, but all congregations are made up of people who are trying to figure out why church attendance is (lower) on Sunday morning or how to attract more young families,” she said. “Churches are looking at how (to) continue to be the faith community that is relevant and important to the people who come and give time on Sunday morning.” Along with suggestions for church groups, Good believes McLaren has much to say about the individual faith experience. “(McLaren) talks about how to keep working at your own faith journey, which is an important question for any person of faith,” she stated. After speaking, McLaren will take time to connect with attendees. “There will be 15 to 20 minutes (for) questions and answers,” noted Good. “(The question-and-answer period will give attendees) a chance to ask specific questions that have been weighing on their minds and hearts,” she said. He earned his Doctor of Divinity degree from Carey Theological College in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Virginia Theological Seminary (Episcopal). In 1982, McLaren helped form Cedar Ridge Community Church, and in 1986, he became the church’s founding pastor. He served in that capacity until 2006. McLaren has been active in mentoring church planters and pastors. He speaks on a variety of topics including postmodern thought and culture. He has authored more than a dozen books, including “A New Kind of Christianity” and “Naked Spirituality.” Good noted that in her experience with area churches, members and leaders are always looking for inspiration. “(McLaren) looks at the big questions facing the church things that hold people back from becoming members and participating in church,” Good said. McLaren is known for helping congregations look at those questions in new ways. “He also talks about innovation and awareness of others’ traditions and understandings and (at) how they connect to Christian faith,” said Good.

Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB), 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host a presentation of “Passion: The Musical” by Piercing Word in the sanctuary on Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. The musical is a modern-day, urban concept that offers a perspective on the last supper, trial, death, and burial of Jesus. The performance will offer an abridged ending in anticipation of Christ’s resurrection being celebrated on Easter Sunday. Piercing Word Inc. is a nonprofit Christian ministry based in Lancaster that performs Scripture in dramatic and musical presentations, word for word from the ESV Bible, with the tagline of “The Scripture is our script.”

Sewing Network Posts Meeting
The live auction will begin at noon on April 27. Items on the auction block will include hotel stays, tickets to local theaters and Lancaster Barnstormers games, lawn and garden items, patio furniture, gift baskets, flowers, hanging baskets and gift certificates to local restaurants. Also up for bids will be a football signed by Penn State coach James Franklin. The DKers juggling duo will perform at 12:30 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit MCDS, which has been serving families in Manheim and the greater Lancaster County area for more than 60 years. “Last year, our benefit auction raised over $130,000,” Moyer noted. “Proceeds from this community event

tickets will be available for walk-ins. Tickets can be purchased by calling the school at 717-665-4300. There will also be a baked goods sale in the gym on April 26, where visitors can find homemade pies, cakes, cookies and whoopie pies. Milkshakes will also be available. The silent auction will begin at 4 p.m. on April 26 and conclude at noon on April 27. Also on April 26, there will be live music in the tent at 6 p.m., featuring LCBC Ephrata campus worship leader Jordan Buckwalt accompanied by MCDS students. The live auction will begin at 6:15 p.m. on April 26. A highlight of the auction will be the class project auction at 7:30 p.m. “Every year at the auction, each student prekindergarten through eighth grade makes a class project to sell at the auction. Last year, they raised $36,000,” Moyer reported. She noted that projects have included birdhouses, bracelets and food items, including peanut butter eggs. “When their projects (are on the auction block), the whole class comes up with their teacher,” Moyer noted. As part of the Seed to Sow program, each fourth-grade student completes his or her own special project. Each student receives $10 as “seed” money to buy supplies. “A lot of times (they make) food, like chocolate chip cookies,” explained Moyer. “They use the seed money to buy their supplies for the first batch, sell it and take the proceeds to buy more supplies and sell more cookies. It’s a good experience for kids to learn how to run a business on a smaller scale.” In addition to providing one of their items for the auction, fourth-graders sell their products throughout March and April at school and to family members and friends. All of their proceeds benefit MCDS. Activities will continue on April 27 with a country breakfast buffet served in the gym by donation from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Made-to-order pancakes, baked oatmeal, hash browns, sausage and fresh fruit will be offered. The live auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. A men’s auction, featuring hunting, camping and fishing items, as well as tools and lawn and gardening equipment, will begin at 10 a.m. Children’s games will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on April 27. A fee will be charged per child. Children age 2 and under may participate for free. The Susquehanna Valley Area Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its annual induction ceremony and banquet on Saturday, May 4, at Four Seasons Banquet Facility, 949 Church St., Landisville. The event will begin with social time at 5:30 p.m., and the banquet will start at 6 p.m. During the banquet, the chapter will honor six inductees: Pete Horn, George Kennedy, Doug Givler, Stephen Beck, Barbara Barr, and Barry Stumpf. There is a per-person fee to attend the banquet. For information about tickets, readers may call Bob Herman at 717-6843407 in the evenings. The deadline for securing tickets is Friday, April 26. Horn is being nominated as a basketball coach. At P.S. Dupont High School and West Nottingham Academy, he played football, basketball, and baseball and earned eight varsity letters. He served as J.P. McCaskey High School’s athletic director from 1972 to 1998 and as the school’s head boys’ basketball coach from 1972 to 1996. Over that time, he compiled a record of 360-111, and his teams won nine LancasterLebanon (L-L) League Section 1 titles and five L-L League championships. Horn was honored as Coach of the Year in Section 1 six times. Horn served on the School District of Lancaster’s school board from 2002 to 2010, and he returned to coaching by serving as the head boys’ basketball coach at Lancaster Country Day School for four seasons in the early 2000s. Kennedy, who is being nominated for body building, is a Columbia resident who spent 15 years as a power lifter before becoming a body builder and winning the title of Mr. Lancaster County in 1977 at the age of 32. Kennedy then entered the masters-level competitions and won Mr. Central Penn in 1987 and Mr. Pennsylvania in 1994. Additionally, he placed second at Mr. Keystone State in 1989, won the Mr. Eastern States and Mr. Eastern
Seaboard competitions in 1990, and placed second in the Mr. USA competition in 1994. At the age of 50, he placed fifth in the Masters Over 50 division in the Mr. America Show. The following year, he placed second at the Mr. Keystone Classic competition. Givler is being nominated for baseball. He played four years of varsity baseball at Manheim Central High School, pitching a nohitter and setting the mark for all-time wins. He then played a year of junior college baseball before accepting a full athletic scholarship to the University of Georgia, where he led the team in strikeouts in 1984 and in innings pitched in 1985. Givler was drafted and signed by the Seattle Mariners in 1985. He played in the minor league systems of the Mariners and the Astros before retiring due to shoulder concerns. After his professional career, Givler played nine seasons for Smitty’s Cardinals and played slow-pitch softball. He currently plays modified softball. Beck attended Hempfield High School, where he received seven varsity letters, was selected to the L-L All-League soccer team, and twice qualified for the PIAA State Swimming and Diving Championship as a diver. Beck was a three-year starter on the soccer team at West Chester State College, and he also participated on the varsity swim team. Beck has been coaching swimming and diving at Hempfield for 38 years, including 17 years as head coach. As head coach, he has amassed a record of 327-712. His boys’ teams have won 11 section championships and one District III championship, finishing fifth at States the same year. His girls’ teams have won six section championships. He has coached five individual state champions and 26 athletes who earned All-American honors. He has been voted L-L League Coach of the Year seven times. 1976 to 1979. She was the first female basketball player to score 1,000 points at McCaskey. In 1979, she was an L-L League AllStar, was named First Team AllState, was named to the Pennsylvania Big 15 All-Star Game, was an honorable mention All-American, and was McCaskey’s Athlete of the Year. The McCaskey team lost in the state final game in 1979 and was a semifinalist in 1978, amassing a 57-6 record over those two seasons. Barr was inducted into the McCaskey Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Barr continued playing basketball at Boston University, where she served as a team captain and hit a game-winning shot to win a Regional in the NAIA tournament. Barr played one year of professional basketball in the English Division One League for Crystal Palace. Barr has since held many roles in broadcast journalism. Stumpf, who is nominated for boxing, began as a youth boxer in 1958 at the YMCA in Lancaster. He won his first AAU Championship in York at 10 years old. In 1963, he was named Outstanding Boxer and YMCA Champion at 118 pounds. He was trained as a youth by Milt Finefrock, with whom he began training boxers in 1974-75 and founded Finefrock & Stumpf Golden Gloves Gym and Youth Center. As a boxing coach and trainer, Stumpf holds the highest certification (Level 4, Star 1) and has been the Pennsylvania State Champions Coach for Golden Gloves from 1982 to the present. He was awarded USA Boxing Coach of the Year four times and has coached for Olympic trials on five different occasions. His boxers hold more than 50 Open Class Golden Glove titles, 15 National Golden Glove titles, and more than 30 National Golden Glove team titles. Stumpf has coached at the Pan American Olympics and at two Olympic Sports Festivals and was inducted into the Golden Gloves National Hall of Fame and the Middle Atlantic Association of USA Boxing’s Hall of Fame.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has announced its 2019-2020 concert season. Unless otherwise noted, Classic Series concerts will take place at the Fulton Opera House, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Music director Stephen Gunzenhauser is celebrating his 40th anniversary with the LSO. The Classic Series will open on Saturday, Sept. 7, with a concert including Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring violinist Elisso Gogibedaschwili; Verdi’s “Nabucco Overture”; and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7. A Saturday, Oct. 26, concert will feature the LSO together with the Lancaster Symphony Chorus, performing Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living.” The concert will also include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8. The series will continue on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020. A trio of musicians from around the world will perform tango works by Astor Piazzolla. The concert will feature Laszlo Fenyö, cello; Marcelo Nisinman, bandoneon; and Diana Ketler, piano. The concert will be held in Clair Performance Hall in the Winter Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. A concert on Saturday, Feb. 15,
Lancaster Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2019-2020 concert season. 2020, will include a suite from Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” featuring violinist Asi Matathias; Barber’s Violin Concerto; and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, “Winter Dreams.” Concerts on Friday and Saturday, March 13 and 14, 2020, will include Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor,” featuring pianist Dr. Christopher Shih of Lancaster. The program will also include Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, “Trauer,” and Mendelssohn’s Sinfonia No. 5. The concert will be performed at the Cultural Center at Willow Valley Communities, 900 Willow Valley Lakes Drive,
Willow Street. The final Classic Series concert, set for Saturday, May 16, 2020, will include Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. The concert will be held in Clair Performance Hall. All Saturday Classic Series concerts will be offered at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. A free “Meet the Music” preconcert talk will be held one hour before each performance. A “Meet the Musicians” reception in the lobby will follow each 8 p.m. concert. In 2004, dancers Jennifer Berlet and Cynthia Nehr, along with a dance student and several of their friends, formed NetCo Dance Company. “NetCo” stands for “Network of Community.” “More than 30 people from all around Lancaster County have been involved as members over the years. They come from various backgrounds. Most everybody has a dance background, but we’ve had people who do martial arts or are competition cheerleaders,” Berlet said. She pointed out that early dance troupes attempted to make everyone look and dance the same, but NetCo was created to be different. “I look very much at the individual, their personality and charisma. I want them to be themselves doing the movement. Diversity strengthens the community.” Because of the diversity of participants, NetCo shows use ballet technique as their basis, but with a modern dance twist. Chamber Mentees Provide Library Assistance Eight Donegal High School juniors who are participating in the Lancaster Chamber’s Women in Business Mentoring Program visited the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy in March. One requirement of each student active in the program is to participate in a volunteer experience in her local community. The young women identified Milanof-Schock Library as a place where they wanted to spend time and offer their help. The students took on a number of spring cleaning tasks for the library, including cleaning windows and blinds, shredding papers and organizing books. At the library, the young women learned that the library, though a nonprofit organization, is a business. They also learned the library is technology-driven in its community services. The Women in Business Mentoring Program aims to help shape and grow the future leaders of the local workforce by providing guidance, sharing wisdom and offering encouragement to young women during their junior year of
high school. The program includes a variety of facilitated experiential career exploration opportunities and learning experiences aimed at introducing students to the myriad educational and professional options open to them after graduation. The eightmonth program currently serves a total of 118 young ladies from 15 school districts. Eleventh-grade students are matched with accomplished professional women in the Lancaster County area to receive information about career options, including science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and nontraditional careers for women; educational paths that will be required for careers; and the importance of social responsibility. Finally, a camp will be offered at Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. This year’s Supercharged curriculum features several video challenges from inductees that encourage children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness. Hands-on activities include Innovation Force, Deep Sea Mystery, Farm Tech, and DIY Orbot. Activities will range from digging up fossils and inventing island survival tools to learning how to manage a farm and reverse engineering a remote-controlled robot. At the end of the program, each camper will bring home a robot. All local Camp Invention programs are facilitated and taught by certified educators who reside and teach in the community.
