With “A Night on Broadway,” Lititz choir seeks to expand its reach

Membersof the Lititz Area Community Choir love to sing.

That passion for music and singing will serve as the driving force behind a free concert that they will present at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 Market St., Lititz. The Lititz Area Community Choir will present “A Night on Broadway,” an hourlong celebration of show tunes.

The concert will feature selections from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Carousel,” “The Sound of Music,” “Man of La Mancha” and “Les Misérables,” among other shows.

“There’s a sense of satisfaction that comes from seeing people come out as an audience and watching people create a feeling or an emotion,” said Debbie Kline-Smith, the director of the Lititz Area Community Choir. “They’re going from hearing the music to being excited about the music. Getting caught up in that music for an hour is a real goal of mine.”

As a group, the 75-member Lititz Area Community Choir has dedicated 40 collective hours of rehearsal

time in preparation for the upcoming concert.

“Many of them are former students I taught in high school (at Warwick) who wanted to continue on because there was a void in their lives,” said Kline-Smith, who retired in June of 2022 following a 35-year career as Warwick’s high school and middle school choir director. “I think they’re really enjoying a taste of what they got in high school. For me, it’s kind of like having your kids back again. It’s making music together with people you know. It’s reminiscing to music. Music is a common thread.”

The concept of a community choir in Lititz is just getting off the ground.

Two months after her retirement, Kline-Smith was part of a committee created to gauge interest in forming the Lititz Area Community Choir. Four months later, the group presented its initial performance, to celebrate the 2022 holiday season.

“At one point I said to the committee, ‘Do you really think people will want to do this?’” said KlineSmith. “And they said, ‘Yeah! Yeah!’ They all loved to sing in high school.

Interested in a trade? Scholarship funds are available

From the time Randy Royer was a child, he showed a strong interest in construction. His sister-in-law, Linda Lantaff, noted that he had “a passion for the trades,” playing with blocks and other toys that he could use to build things. Randy pursued a building career following high school, earning an associate degree in architectural engineering technology from Penn State University and a Bachelor of Science in structural design and construction engineering technology. Randy became a project manager and estimator

with Ames Construction, working there for nearly 30 years before his untimely death in October 2016.

When the date that would have been Randy’s next birthday rolled around, his friend and fellow Ames employee, vice president Steve Burridge was thinking about him, and he called Randy’s widow, Lori, to check on the family. The idea of creating a scholarship was discussed. “Randy loved working here,” said Burridge.

The first Randy Royer Memorial Scholarship was given in 2017. Each scholarship is a minimum of $1,000, and to date, eight scholarships

They all had great experiences. The Christmas performance went off really well. The choir felt really well received.”

In some ways, “A Night on Broadway” will provide the Lititz Area Community Choir an opportunity to sustain that initial momentum. Kline-Smith said that the choir has come a long way since September and that its “voice quality has grown immensely.”

“I’d love to add some choreography and some special effects,” said Kline-Smith. “My shows at the high school were known for their professionalism. I have high expectations and I’m full of ideas.”

Downtown Lititz cleans up

cleanliness is also in very close proximity to community.

Keeping Lititz neat and tidy is a collective effort, and no day

celebrates the borough’s cleanliness like downtown Lititz’s annual spring cleanup day. This spring’s version of the event, the 10th annual, will take place on Saturday, April 29, between 8 a.m. and noon.

The annual spring cleanup day is spearheaded by Venture Lititz and is a part of Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup, a nationwide initiative designed to engage community pride in the cleanliness of hometowns.

“A clean downtown is vital for so many reasons,” said Venture Lititz executive director Rebecca Branle. “From an economic development perspective, a clean downtown

The Lititz Ministerium will offer a series of Senior Issues Seminars in the sanctuary at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 E. Market St. All older adults in the Lititz area, along with their family members, are invited to attend.

The seminars will cover a wide variety of issues relevant to older adults and their families, and the programs will feature local experts. Each event will consist of approximately 45 minutes of content and 15 minutes for audience questions. The presentations will be recorded and later uploaded to the Lititz United Methodist Church’s YouTube channel. In addition to providing an opportunity for review, the recorded videos may contain supplemental materials.

The first two seminars will take place on Sundays, April 23 and 30, from 2 to 3 p.m. On April 23, attorney Douglas Smith of Gibble, Kraybill & Hess will present “Estate Planning From Simple to Sophisticated.” On April 30, attorney Marci Miller of Gibble, Kraybill & Hess will present “Long-Term Care Planning and

Common Mistakes to Avoid.”

Future programs will include “Senior Living Options,” “Financial Management,” “Long-Term Care Insurance,” “Hospice Services and Natural Death,” “Planning for Burial or Cremation,” “Giving Back and Perpetuating Family Values” and “Newly Widowed - Now What?” Further details are forthcoming. There is no cost to attend the seminars, and no registration is required. The church offers parking, and the building is handicapped-accessible.

worth a total of $37,000 have been awarded. At first, the scholarship was only available to students at Randy’s alma mater, Ephrata High School, but now seniors at Cocalico, Warwick, and Garden Spot high schools are also eligible. Students who plan to pursue studies in building/construction or automotive industry at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology or Pennsylvania College of Technology may apply. Lantaff noted that Thaddeus Stevens offers an early entry program for selected students who may then attend during their senior year of high school. “We have rewritten our (scholarship) eligibility requirements to allow those students to qualify,” said Lantaff, who added that students in the program may receive funding during their first year at Thaddeus Stevens and then apply again for their second year at the school.

Randy’s friends Eric Bensing and his wife, Denise, are part of the scholarship committee. “It’s nice to do something to remember Randy and give the kids in the communities a scholarship platform,” said Eric. “The scholarship requirements are tailored to Randy’s interests and skillset.”

Lantaff, who developed the application, said that students are asked to respond to specific ques-

Ames president Mark Yoder said that a company golf outing that had been held in the past was resurrected to help raise funds. “We thought to bring it back and use it for a scholarship opportunity,” said Yoder. Volunteers pick up trash, weed and mulch all the tree wells and beds on Main Street and Broad Street in the historic downtown business district. Participants work both hard and smart, and the casual nature of the work, combined with camaraderie and civic pride, makes it seem a little less tedious.

“It’s a great time for us to gather side by side with our neighbors and share the bond of working together to make sure the town shines ahead of our bustling, warm-weather season,” said Branle. “In the past, we’ve been so lucky to have a big crew of community members show up, so lots of hands make for fast work. Author releases third children’s book

Local author Kim Kluxen Meredith has announced that her third children’s picture book, “Heidi Saves the Day,” was released on April 1.

“Heidi Saves the Day” is the third in a series, which began with “Henri’s Home” in 2020 and continued with “Henri to the Rescue” in 2021. The books tell stories of various beach adventures of a hermit crab family with their friends of the sea, and the illustrations are all original watercolors by Lancaster artist Lisa Madenspacher. The hardback books are printed by Yurchak Printing in Landisville.

In addition to being sold at three local Lancaster/Lititz locations, Meredith’s books are carried by two Delaware beach locations and seven New Jersey shore locations, and “Heidi Saves the Day” is also available at a store in Naples, Fla. Additionally, copies of the books may be purchased at www.kimkluxenmeredith.com.

Story time and book signing events have been planned to celebrate Meredith’s new book. The events will take place on Saturday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Pocket Books Bookstore, 903 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, and on Monday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Aaron’s Bookstore, 35 E. Main St., Lititz.
