Cool And Caring Scout Works To Bring Adaptive Swings To Lititz Springs Park By Ann Mead Ash
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Abby Musser is a junior at Warwick High School (WHS), and, since she was a freshman, the Ambassador Girl Scout and member of Girl Scout Troop 70256 of Lititz has been working toward earning her Girl Scout Gold Award by completing a project she named “One Swing at a Time.” Inspired by a friend’s son who has alternating hemiplegia of childhood, a neurological condition that causes episodes of paralysis, Musser has been coordinating efforts to bring adaptive swings to Lititz Springs Park. “When he has an episode, he is paralyzed from the neck down with no control of his body,” said Musser. “He is the sweetest little boy, but he couldn’t do things his siblings were doing.” The situation introduced Musser to the need for adaptable See Girl Scout pg 4

Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, started out small. “We started in 2006 in a little garage in Farmersville,” said David Lapp, a representative of the ministry. The group recognized that food that was being wasted could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond, and it eventually developed relationships with more than 80 food producers. “We get semi-truck loads of product, and we
redistribute to food pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries,” explained Lapp. “We serve the organizations that serve the people that need See Ministry pg 2

Bucher Elementary thirdgrade student and Cub Scout Pack 93 member Case Baccio likes to fish, and so do his friends. “A lot of people I know love to fish,” said Case. After attending a Warrior Weekend to Remember in Milltown, Ohio, in July of 2019, Case had an idea. The gathering, which is sponsored by Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals (BS3G), the nonprofit arm of the Fastrax See Fishing Tournament pg 5

Tests, treatments, and cures for the novel coronavirus are advertised online and even by text or phone call, but those products may only leave buyers with less money and no good outcomes. “Fraudsters prey on public fears during times like these,” said Master Trooper Kelly Osborne, community service and public information officer with Troop J - Lancaster of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). She added that scammers often target seniors, and worry about contracting COVID-19 may cause people to make decisions they would not make in other circumstances.

Ministry from pg 1 the food.” In the last few weeks, the changes wrought by COVID-19 restrictions have affected the ministry in a variety of ways. Most recently, the organization has been contacted by a number of dairy farms with milk to donate. “We had 20 people call in the (first week of April) that had milk for us,” said Lapp, who noted that BOH has connected with a co-operative in Holtwood to receive milk. “They are sending two truckloads a day,” said Lapp during the second week of April. “ We received close to 10,000 gallons of milk that we had pasteurized and bottled and we were able to distribute.” Some of that milk came to CrossNet Ministries in New Holland on April 7. Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager at CrossNet, was excited to receive 75 gallons. “Kreider Farms (of Manheim) pasteurized and bottled (the milk),” said Marburger, who noted the availability made a big difference for ELANCO-area families. “We are able to double what we give our families in milk this week,” she said. Although BOH is a wholesale food bank, it does distribute food boxes for families in need through a relationship with New Covenant Church of God, 111 E. Chestnut St., Ephrata. Food is
distributed at the church every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30. p.m. Over the years, the need for family food boxes has grown, but in recent weeks, the demand has gone up dramatically, according to Lapp. “In October 2010, we committed to providing seven boxes (of food) per week to a local pastor,” recalled Lapp. “On April 4 (this year), we packed 4,500 boxes in one day.” Lapp noted that each box is packed with 35 to 40 pounds of food, designed to feed a family of four. Among the contents are fruits and vegetables, milk, crackers, chips, and yogurt. “There’s a nice assortment of food going into the boxes,” said Lapp. The organization is also working with employers who have had to lay off their employees to help meet the needs of those who cannot work during the COVID-19 crisis. In addition to the number of boxes being distributed, the way in which the three shifts of 60 to 70 volunteers each handle those boxes has changed as well. Lapp said he spoke with both Congressman Lloyd Smucker and state Sen. Ryan Aument about how to do outreaches during this time without drawing large crowds of people. “(The answer) was to prepack food in a family

box and do drive-through-style outreaches where we put a box of food in people’s trunks,” explained Lapp. “We also have a health screening at our building where our volunteers are screened by local EMTs under the direction of a doctor (connected to) WellSpan Hospital,” said Lapp. “ We want to keep everybody safe while they’re working here, and if we can control the risk to our volunteers, we can greatly reduce the risk at the outreaches.” The ministry has come a long way since its roots in the threecar garage, moving seven times over the years. “In 2010, we moved to our first warehouse in Ephrata on Trout Run Road,” recalled Lapp. “We had 1,500 square feet, and we felt we had all the space we needed … for about two weeks. Then everything filled
up.” The pattern repeated itself several times. Finally, in August of 2019, BOH purchased a 44,000-square-foot former fruit warehouse near Oregon Dairy. In addition to the local outreach to area churches, BOH sends food to large cities. “We ship to New York City, Baltimore, and Philadelphia nearly every week,” said Lapp. BOH receives donated food in large quantities, but funds are still needed to move the food or prepare it for distribution. “ We need cash to process (the milk),” said Lapp. “We could do so much more if the cash was there.” Readers who would like to learn more about BOH may visit www.blessingsofhope.com. Individuals who have questions may call 717-824-1227 or email admin@blessingsofhope.com.

If someone believes they or a loved one is a victim of a scam, they should contact their local police department or the PSP, if they live in an area covered by the state police, using the respective agency’s nonemergency number. The PSP nonemergency number is 717-299-7650, and Lancaster County Radio may be reached at 717-664-1180. The latter will route phone calls to the appropriate police department. Volunteerism is critical to the core mission of the CPFB and its partner agencies. To ensure the safety of the volunteers, the food bank has implemented several restrictions, including limiting staffing to only 10 individuals at a time. People who are healthy and have some free time to give are invited to volunteer. Finally, if people want to help, financial contributions are being
welcomed. The CPFB can acquire nutritious food in large quantities that has been handled safely and make it stretch very far. A $1 donation can help the food bank provide six meals. Rather than bringing people together in person for a traditional food drive, CPFB staffers can set groups up to do a virtual food drive online. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) wants people to know that the charitable food network is still operational, albeit with significant precautionary procedures to maintain maximum safety while striving to maintain a robust response. Individuals who are hungry and families that rely on food assistance should still seek help when they need it. CPFB leaders are committed to meeting the elevated need that they believe will develop as the COVID-19 situation continues. CPFB leaders have advised their charitable food partners to continue their work with a modified delivery, such as drivethrough distribution sites, graband-go meals, and appointmentonly access to food pantries to limit the gathering of large groups of people. The process for signing up for the programs can be done over the phone in many cases or will be waived all together, so people should not hesitate to ask for help. Osborne noted that recent scams that have surfaced involve the economic stimulus, claims about products marketed as coronavirus treatments, or the promise of services related to the virus in an attempt to distract someone in order to commit theft or another property crime. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has published a long list of frauds that have sprung up around COVID-19 and good strategies for avoiding them at www.justice.gov/coronavirus/ combattingfraud. “Families can help (loved ones) see that the scammers are there en force and that coronavirus is now a new trigger to alarm potential scam targets,” Osborne said. “Warn them to get any information about ‘medical breakthroughs’ from either the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Daily updates get posted with truthful information on these sites.” Osborne offered four tips that can be useful in protecting an individual from a scam. • Never accept an online offer for a coronavirus vaccine. “We don’t have one, and if we did, our own doctors would offer it,” Osborne said. • Never click on any link from an unfamiliar source, as that is

Musser is proud of her hometown, so she wanted to make sure more residents and visitors could enjoy all Lititz has to offer. “There’s nothing like proving we are not only the coolest small town in America, but we can advance and offer that availability (of adaptive swings to children), said Musser. Aware of the other adaptive playgrounds in Lititz, including Harmony Playground at Saylor Park and the planned Tree House of Lititz at Lititz Church of the Brethren, Musser chose to focus on one of Lititz’s bestknown outdoor gathering places: Lititz Springs Park. “Lititz is a special place with a lot of events, said Musser, who noted that Lititz Springs Park is the site of a variety of annual happenings, including the Independence Day celebration and Fire and Ice exhibition. “(Lititz is) a very community-oriented place, and our park is right in the

center (of town). Musser began working on her project during the summer of 2017. Her first step was to schedule a meeting with the Lititz Springs Park board to secure permission to move forward. Her second step was to present a proposal to representatives of Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania for approval to complete the project for the Gold Award. “My third step was fundraising, said Musser, who has raised $5,000 of the approximately $15,000 needed to install the swings. To help raise funds, she has sold bracelets in the green, white, and gray theme colors of the swing project. She also has placed collection jars at local businesses, including Kissel Hill Eye Care, Purple Robin Reserve, and Zest! She has plans underway to hold fundraiser nights at local restaurants, and donations can be made directly at https://oneswingatatime.com. Musser’s fourth step will be to have the swings installed in the park. She has spent a fair amount of time working with the manufacturer of the playground equipment to design the play area so that it will fit into the space that has been designated by the park. It has been configured so that additional swings can be installed at a later date. The schedule for the project calls for the swings to be installed by the summer of 2021, but that will not necessarily mark the end of the effort. As part of the project, Musser will create a how-to guide for other Girl Scouts or anyone who wants to bring adaptive swings to their local playground. “(That’s) the reason behind the name ‘One Swing at a Time,’ Musser explained. Lastly, Musser will celebrate completing her project. “It will be a big accomplishment for me and our town, she stated. “My goal is to spread the word of inclusivity. This is simple, and it tells children they can do it. We just need to care for one another, she said.

Case attended the 2019 Warrior Weekend with his mother, Ali Bucher, and McCullough, who is Bucher’s boyfriend. “My mother’s boyfriend is a professional skydiver with Team Fastrax, explained Case. Team Fastrax is a professional skydiving team that supports the Warrior Weekend. “They bring together veterans and family members of veterans who were killed, added Case. Case explained that Wiener is a member of a Gold Star Family, meaning that she is an immediate family member of a service member who died while serving in a time of conflict. “We are now friends with her, said Baccio. McCullough explained that Wiener lost her son, Jeffery, who was serving in the Navy in 2014, but Bucher added that the pain of losing Jeffery was still fresh when the two women met. The experience of meeting Wiener and learning her story made such an impression on Case that he returned to Pennsylvania eager
to talk to his Scout troop about ways to help out. “A lot of (members of) my den like to fish, said Case. “We thought, ‘Why not hold a fishing tournament?’ Bucher explained that the family has been working with Matthew Adams, an executive at the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America. “I asked if he could help, and he suggested we hold it at Camp Mack, and the Boy Scouts would help promote it, said Bucher. She added that she is especially grateful to friends and family taking part in the effort. The fishing tournament will offer special categories and rates for those who have certain connections to the military. The Adult Hero category will include people age 16 and older who are Purple Heart recipients or are
members of Gold Star or Blue Star families. Blue Star Families are the immediate family member(s) of a service member currently serving in a conflict. The Child Hero will include children of Purple Heart recipients or children who are members of Gold Star and Blue Star families. Open categories for adults and children will also be offered. Registration will include T-shirts, lunch, and more. Sponsorships for the event are available as well. Readers who wish to take part in the event may register on www.eventbrite.com by searching for “1st Annual Clear Water For Heroes. Individuals who have questions may email alisonbucher@yahoo.com or elmac1976@gmail.com or call 717224-5923 or call 910-964-8594.

Fishing Tournament from pg 1 sky diving team, is held to honor veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes. The event includes enriching experiences that facilitate friendships and encourage emotional healing. Inspired by the gathering, Case decided to combine his love of fishing with a goal of raising $8,000 in scholarships to send two participants to the 2020 Warrior Weekend, scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, to Sunday, July 12. Case is working with others to organize the Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament, which will be held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, more commonly known as Camp Mack, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, on Sunday, May 17. The tournament will be open to both children and adults. The adult tournament will be held from 7 to 11 a.m., followed by a barbecue lunch, and the children’s tournament will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. According to Eric McCullough, who is helping Case to organize the event, scoring of the competition will be based on each participant’s heaviest catches. “(Contestants) will be scored on their top five (fish), explained McCullough, who noted that the Camp Mack lake is home to fish in a variety of sizes.

Community Hub Launched
Benefit Golf Outing Slated
School closures, unemployment, stay-at-home orders and financial concerns surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak have stressed the resources of local food banks and similar organizations. Operations of services such as Water Street Mission in Lancaster have been negatively impacted by a decreased availability of volunteers and social distancing guidelines for common hall dining, putting extra pressure on the ability to feed the mission’s guests. Lititz-based Listrak, in partnership with former state Sen. Mike Brubaker of Hunger-Free Lancaster County, North Group Consultants, in-kind donors and other community leaders, has launched the Lititz Community Hub. With this initiative, Listrak’s culinary staff is preparing and delivering hot meals weekly for guests of the Water Street Mission from its corporate café, called The Hub, located at the company’s 93,000square-foot Warwick Township facility headquarters. According to CEO and cofounder Ross Kramer, Listrak has a full-service kitchen staffed by culinary professionals who

Listrak partnered with Kegel’s Produce, United Way of Lancaster County, and Meals on Wheels of Lancaster to make the effort possible. Listrak employees have worked entirely remotely since midMarch. slated to continue service through Thursday, April 30. According to Kramer, the company does not anticipate the project to become a long-term program. On April 30, officials will reevaluate the needs at Water Street and other organizations, as well as in the larger community. The company’s greatest need currently is more donations to enable it to prepare and deliver more meals. To learn more, readers may visit www.lititzcommunityhub.com. Currently, the United Way of Lancaster County is handling administration of all monetary donations. Those who represent a community program in need of prepared hot meals are asked to call or text 717-842-0570. For more information, readers may visit www.listrak.com. Meal Bagz are currently available at all 600 Sheetz locations and will be available all day. The Meal Bagz include a turkey sandwich, chips and a beverage. The program, which began on April 16, will be available for two weeks at which time it will be reevaluated based on community need. This initiative started on April 19. Sheetz’s store employees will not be checking IDs of customers during this hour, but the company asks that community members respect this reserved hour.
