Matthew 25 - More Than 20 Years Of Giving onnie Shertzer, who has served as the general manager of Matthew 25 Thrift Shop for the last seven years, oversees a complete changeover in the store twice a year. “At the end of winter, we do a clean-out,” said Shertzer, who completed a changeover and officially reopened in late March. “ When spring and summer are over, we do it again.” To aid in the process, Shertzer and 65 volunteers hold two days of halfprice sales followed by a “fill-a-bag” event and finally a day when everything in the store is free. “What is left, we give to Unto in Mount Joy,” said Shertzer. When everything is gone, donations that have been stockpiled are brought out to restock the shop, which has a small housewares section along with clothing for men; women’s clothing in petites, plus, and regular sizes; children’s clothing from infant to big boys and girls; and accessories. A section in the back serves as a bookstore and a place to display artwork to be sold.

C

The purpose of the thrift shop, which was founded more than 20 years ago, is to help fund local organizations such as food pantries, Meals on Wheels programs, and Help the Fight. Funds are given to social service organizations and others that help those in need. “It has to stay in Lancaster County,” said Shertzer, who added that the shop has raised and given away $3 million since its inception. The name of the shop, which is run by a seven-member board, is taken from the 25th chapter of the Book of Matthew in the Bible. Shertzer pointed out that the shop is nondenominational. “In order to make money, you have to have some nice things,” said Shertzer, who noted that gently used and new items are accepted at the shop during regular hours, which currently are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. There are a number of items that cannot be accepted at the shop, including large appliances and large exercise equipment, computers, car seats, records, video tapes, cassettes, and cookbooks.

Team Jennifer Cahill To Hold First Fundraiser After disabled United States Air Force veteran Jennifer Cahill was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May of 2020, she was amazed at

the number of people who reached out to help her and her husband, Mike, who is also a disabled veteran, with expenses. “I got this diagnosis, and (we) learned we had no burial insur-

By September of 2020, Jennifer had made up her mind to find a way to aid others in the same situation. “I thought how awesome it would be for others to have that support and help,” she shared. The result is Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which will hold its kickoff event on Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the grounds of the Reinholds Fire Station, 138 W. Main St., Reinholds. The event will include car and motorcycle shows and rides, a Chinese auction, more than 20 product and craft vendors, several food trucks, and live entertainment. In a second tent, also open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friendship Heart Gallery will offer some artwork for sale, including items from the Primitives by Cathy collection. Among these will be water bottles and blocks that sit on shelves and bear the work of a Friendship artist and sometimes inspirational messages. “(Primitives by Cathy) takes Friendship artwork and puts it on home décor pieces,” said Link, who noted that coasters and notebooks will be among the pieces for sale. “It’s not just a gift; it’s a gift with purpose and meaning,” said Link, who noted that a portion of the sale will go back to the gallery. She said both the plants and the artwork make great Mother’s Day gifts. Link said that she hopes some individuals who are served by Friendship Community will be at the Fest. “Doran has been at previous Fests,” she said. Doran, who is legally blind, is known for the woven potholders he sells by donation. “It’s a craft he loves to do, and he donates proceeds back to Friendship,” said Link, who added that the potholders can be used as hotpads and coasters, and that each is colorful and distinctive. “It’s art and function (together),” she

Library Schedules from pg 1 Weather permitting, five concerts will be held. The series will kick off at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, with Swing Street, a band that includes up to four musicians and is known for adding a dash of fun to mainstream jazz standards and jazz adaptations of popular tunes. Band members are Chuck Oettel on guitar, Pete Bainbridge on bass, Mike Truitt on piano, and vocals by Olivia Daugherty. On Thursday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m., Bravura Brass, a Lancaster brass quintet known for entertaining and upbeat concert programs, will play. The band consists of tuba player Steven Holgate, trumpet players Jason Blome and Curtis Palmer, Jill Markley on the French horn, and Tony Deininger on the trombone. The library will host the Harris-

burg Mandolin Ensemble on Saturday, July 24, at 1 p.m. The ensemble has its roots in 2011 when Tom Cook and Wade Yankey decided to explore new and eclectic material from Bach to bluegrass and more. The ensemble now includes Greg Rohrer on mandolin, Kevin Neidig on mandolin and octave mandolin and vocals, Cook on mandola and vocals, and Henry Koretzky on mandocello and mandolin and vocals. The band plays original tunes along with songs that draw from jazz, swing, bluegrass, oldtime, folk, and world music. On Wednesday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m., Temple Avenue will bring swing and blues music to the venue, and on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 1:30 p.m., The Knotwork Band, a professional Celtic folk music trio, will perform traditional folk music along

with original compositions. Band members include Victoria Visceglia on silver flute, wooden whistles, piano, percussion, and vocals; Kevin Long on guitar and fretless bass guitar, as well as vocals and mandolin; and Tommy Kochel on wooden flute, piccolo, high and low whistles, mandolin, and bodhráns, as well as vocals. Attendees to the free events are asked to Members of Swing Street (from bring a blanket or chairs left) Olivia Daugherty, Pete Bainbridge, Chuck Oettel, and Mike and to sit as a group Truitt will perform at the first near a green flag for Lititz Library outdoor concert on social distancing pur- May 27. poses. and bikes held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The ride is scheduled to start at noon. Mike noted that the mission of the charity is twofold. First, the group helps preplan and prepay final expenses and arrangements for female veterans who have terminal cancer and do not have life or burial insurance or other resources. He explained that many people believe that veterans are automatically covered for these expenses, but that is not necessarily the case, and many families have to pay significant out-ofpocket expenses. “We will offset final expenses,” explained Mike, who added that funds could be available up to $16,500. Second, Team Jennifer Cahill wants to raise awareness concerning female veterans. Mike pointed out that when most people think of veterans, they picture a man in a dress uniform, but there are many female veterans like Jennifer, who served in communications and security in Alaska from 1995 to 1999. Mike said that the rides at the kickoff event will follow a protocol similar to the Make-A-Wish Convoy but with hot rods and motorcycles rather than trucks. “(Cars) will go 20 miles in one direction, and bikes will go 30 miles in another direction,” he explained. In addition to product and craft vendors, there will be a Chinese auction featuring a saddlebag for a 2017 Harley Davidson Breakout. Live entertainment will be provided by Easily Amused, a Southern rock cover band called Buckskin Whiskey, and Dirt Road Redemption. Food items for purchase will be provided by

Mother’s Day Special

In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain

their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful,

beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC See Golf Outing pg 16

Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy Scheduled For Mother’s Day The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post every-

thing also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drivethrough chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website. The public is also invited to participate in an online auction that will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wishconvoy.org. “We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.”

People are invited to cheer the convoy along the route, which can be found at https:// tinyurl.com/u8ddcvrw. “There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.” The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel a connection.” This is the second time the event will begin at the Manheim Auto Auction. Last year’s event was a scaled-down convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be

partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day MakeA-Wish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wishconvoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.”

The Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction of Northern Lancaster County has been scheduled for Saturday, May 15, at the Hertzog Homestead Event Venue, 470 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. Organizers have planned a day that will include pony rides, food, and an auction. The auction began several years ago when a group of neighbors centered around the common goal of helping those living in poverty to gain education and employment skills to help them become self-sustainable. According to Kristen Hertzog, organizer of the event, the auction will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the last item is sold. Among the many pieces of merchandise that will go up for bids will be handmade quilts in a variety of sizes, lawn and garden supplies, antiques, collectibles, furniture, gift cards, baskets, and donated gently used items. “We are still accepting donations of new items and financial gifts to offset the cost of the auction,” said Hertzog.

Food that will be available for purchase will include chicken barbecue, salads, sub sandwiches, toasted cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, baked goods, and homemade doughnuts. Hertzog noted that extra attention has been paid to safety measures this year. “There’s natural social distancing due to the 23-acre size of the property (where the auction is held),” she explained. “We are taking precautions for safety for both the volunteers and the attendees,” she said, adding that masks are strongly encouraged. All the funds raised at the 2021 event will benefit two organizations that help provide education and business training for Haitian small business owners. Paradigm Shift is the education division of Haiti Transformation, which teaches leadership skills and is led by Nelson and Sue Martin. Hope Library is located in Montrouis, Haiti, a town with a population of about 18,000. The library offers books in French, Creole, and English and education programs in the area. The library, which is a Christian training center, has more than 1,000 volumes of books. Hertzog said auction organizers would like to help the library get to 5,000 volumes. The auction regularly brings together about 100 volunteers from diverse backgrounds who work to help bring education and business training to the people of Haiti. Hertzog estimated that about 1,000 people attend each year. Readers who would like more information may visit www.hope forhaitibenefit.auction. Hertzog noted that those who cannot attend may donate online via the website. Individuals with questions may call 717-201-4893.

marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and provide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized. “Your donation and participation will make a direct impact on the community.” To date, the EPC Golf Outing has raised more than $100,000 for charity. Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. While items such as housewares and artwork are priced, clothing is only priced if a piece is new. Rack toppers give prices for items such as blouses or pants, and all clothing items are organized by size to make it easier for customers to find what they are looking for. Sales are held when an abundance of a particular item is in stock. “If we have more dresses or blazers, I may have a sale on those for 20% off,” explained Shertzer, who noted that prices have not been raised in several years. She added that the shop is frequented by both locals and tourists. Shertzer said that she asks all volunteers to follow a vision of a shop that is clean and attractive. “I encourage my volunteers to greet and thank people and be kind,” she said, “… and to be grateful when (people) bring donations.” More information about the shop may be found by searching for “Matthew 25 Thrift Shop” on Facebook.
