Food truck fest will satisfy Warwick students’ hunger for music

Ofcourse, you’ve got a lot going on. Sure, you’re busy. But clear a space on your calendars and mark it down, because you’re not going to want to miss this.

It’s a day of fun and food and music and fellowship. All for one great cause.

It’s the third edition of the Warwick Band Food Truck Fest, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, at Lititz Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., Lititz. All proceeds from the event will support the Warwick Middle and High School band programs, which benefit more than 150 local students through the medium of music.

“It’s really heart-warming to see all the people come out,” said Matt Tenaglia, who’s been the director of the Warwick High School and Middle School band programs for six years. “You’ve got the smell of the foods in the air. There’s warm temperatures. It’s a great day. I absolutely love this event. It’s a good way to

make money, but it’s almost an afterthought. The goal is to bring people out.”

“This also gives kids another outlet to perform,” continued Tenaglia.

“I try to think outside the box as much as I can. We looked at the park and said, ‘How can we use that space to bring people together?’ The kids love this event, because after they perform, they can spend time with their friends.”

school district has budgeted for the band program - dollars that will ultimately lead to greater opportunities for the seventh- to 12thgrade students involved with the extracurricular activity.

“Band is a huge reach from school to community,” said Tenaglia. “We perform at parades, football games and competitions. Music helps teach kids how to count and read at the same time. But we also try to give kids an opportunity to lead. With the music program here, we try to give kids a total, overall education experience. With all the skills they learn, they’re going to be better people.”

Fourteen food trucks offering all sorts of fare will be on hand that day. Their presence will be supported instrumentally by the Warwick High School and Middle School jazz bands and the program’s String Synergy group.

A crowd of up to 1,000 people is expected for the Warwick Band Food Truck Fest, and the monies raised will supplement what the

Golf outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services

The 16th annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 9, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).

GSS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. First operating under the name Good Sam Shelter, GSS was

created in 1999, and it has continued to grow in the years since. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for peopleto get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the local area. In addition to the two jazz bands, the Warwick High School and Middle School band programs also support a pair of concert bands and the Warrior Marching Band.

“They’re great kids,” said Tenaglia. “They’ve come a long way and grown so much. That’s what makes my job so special. I get to see them when they’re 12, all the way up until they’re 18. Every kid in this program is top-notch. They carry themselves with respect, and they work hard.”

“Gardens of Oz” offers free beauty for the asking

Aesthetically pleasing, beauty takes on a deeper meaning when shared with others. In the natural world, there are few things recognized as more beautiful than plants, including trees and flowers.

Manheim Township resident Dennis Denenberg has a deep appreciation for the magnificent and complex 1-acre garden that surrounds his home at 410 Valley Road, Lancaster. But that appreciation blooms into pure enjoyment when

visitors see it, smell it and experience it.

In fact, Denenberg has made his garden, affectionately referred to as The Gardens of Oz, available as a nonprofit venue for charitably minded organizations to host fundraisers, meetings and events free of charge.

In return for the use of the garden, Denenberg does accept donations to Diana’s Dreamers, a charity he founded at Millerville University to honor his late sister Diana Denenberg-Durand, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2007.

Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger set

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its 30th annual National Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday, May 13. Lancaster County letter carriers will pick up nonperishable food donations during their routes. All donations collected will be donated to local food pantries.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is timed to resupply local food pantries when they are usually depleted and entering the summer with low supplies. Residents are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items, place them in a bag, and leave the bag in or around their mailbox the

morning of May 13.

The top requested nonperishable food items are cereal, pasta, pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals (such as soups, chili, and pasta), 100% juice, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, canned meats or fish, beans (canned or dry), and shelf-stable milk that does not require refrigeration. Healthy, lowsodium, low-sugar items such as beans, oatmeal and other whole grains, and canola or olive oil are also requested. All items should be unexpired and in plastic or cardboard packaging. Items should not be in glass jars or bottles.

Bluegrass band to perform at Fairmount

Denenberg said that the garden has already been reserved for four events this season but that he’d like to see it used four times more.

Guided by a pair of certified horticulturists, known as the “Garden Godesses,” the tour takes about an hour to complete.

“My joy comes from seeing people enjoy the gardens,” said Denenberg. “I like to hear people laugh and ask questions. There is nothing as spectacular as nature. Even our grandest man-made monuments don’t come close. It’s fun to share it.”

Plural, The Gardens of Oz is actually an arrangement of more than two dozen separate but intertwining gardens. Mixing both common and exotic plants, the garden features a bamboo grove, fish ponds, a garden dedicated to the Emerald City and Yellow Brick Road, as well as a pink garden honoring the memory of his sister.

Tru Vintage Gospel Bluegrass, a local bluegrass group, is set to perform at Fairmount

in Ephrata on Tuesday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m. Weather permitting, the concert will be held outdoors on the Wheat Ridge campus at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive on the west side of the Fairmount campus.

The event is open to the public, and attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs. For directions, visit www.fairmounthomes.org.

The Gardens of Oz is home to more than 500 species of thriving vegetation, each with its own unique life cycle and color pattern.

“Every garden has a different vibe,” said Denenberg. “This is a ‘Wow.’ Here, you’re in the garden. You’re not just observing it. You’re at the whim of nature. Garden-

ers appreciate the layout, but every person wants to see colors.”

“Each season affects the garden drastically,” continued Denenberg. “My favorite time is spring. It’s spectacular. Once the first blooms come, from then on, there are colors everywhere. Then with the interaction of animals, the bees and the birds, it’s magical.”

It’s also natural beauty 28 years in the making.

When he purchased the property, Denenberg decided after an initial mowing of the lawn that he wanted his yard to be a garden. Now, a blade of grass cannot be found anywhere.

It took Denenberg eight years to fill in the acre lot with plants and flowers, a process he continues to tweak today. Denenberg has been offering tours of the garden for about 15 years now.

“It’s morphed in that the garden now is much more mature,” said Denenberg. “Life is about giving back. It doesn’t matter how rich or poor you are; give back to others. Even a smile can make someone’s day.”

No one goes it alone. That’s why healthy family relationships provide structure for our society.

Bethany Christian Services is all about healthy familiesconventional families, extended families, blended families. Even the nonprofit organization’s fundraisers revolve around families.

“For me, the people who make up my family may not

all be blood relatives,” said Dawn Tluczek, who’s in charge of church and donor engagement for Bethany Christian Services of Lancaster. “For some people who are single, it’s their cat or their dog. It’s the people who surround us and who have our backs. We are very involved with foster care and adoption. It’s who you go through life with.”

On Tuesday, May 16, Bethany Christian Services of

Lancaster is sponsoring its inaugural in-person Go Further for Family walk/run at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The event will be held at Pavilion 1 at Long’s Park and will begin at 12:30 p.m., with registration at noon.

Registration rates are reduced for groups of individuals, and participants are encouraged to solicit sponsorships from businesses, family members and friends. Participants will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag, and bikes and pets are welcome.

“Our organization is all about family preservation,” said Tluczek. “Everything revolves around the family. (The event is) an opportunity for families to walk together and just spend time together, talking with one another and engaging one another. It’s a time to put phones away. There’s something cool about family time.”

“We just want people to have a better understanding of who we are and see what

we do,” continued Tluczek. “We’re very involved and engaged in our community. If one family becomes a foster family, it would be a success. There are a lot of organizations out there doing great things, and we’re one of them.”

After virtually introducing the Go Further for Family walk/run during the pandemic, Tluczek said she’s hoping for 150 participants for the event’s initial in-person staging. The Go Further for Family walk/run is part of a national initiative to support vulnerable children and families.

May is National Foster Care Month.

“The hope is you always want to get bigger each year,” said Tluczek. “Eventually, I’d like to see hundreds, even thousands, come out. I don’t think the community knows enough about Bethany Christian Services. If one person can be touched and reached, hopefully the word spreads.”

Established in 1984,

Bethany Christian Services operates out of its global offices in Grand Rapids, Mich., and also sponsors programs in Harrisburg, York, State College and Reading. Bethany Christian Services focuses on adoption, foster care, parenting, pregnancy, the strengthening of families and refugees and immigrants.

“In Pennsylvania, there are 2,000 to 3,000 kids looking

for families, and to us, that’s unacceptable,” said Tluczek. “There are kids who really need us. They are not bad kids, but they have no other families. It just takes someone with a heart.”

Fulton Bank, a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, has donated $22,500 to Bench Mark Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing fitness-based mentoring, academic coaching and career counseling to underserved youths.

A $15,000 donation through Pennsylvania’s Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit Program will help expand the Student Leadership Program, which provides training to transform students into Bench Mark Program peer mentors and employees. Fulton also donated $7,500 through the state Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.

Will Kiefer, executive director of Bench Mark Program, accepted the donation from Fulton Bank staff members Phil Smith, regional commercial executive; Christie Eachus, market manager;

Mark Katkovcin, consumer sales manager; and Josh Griffith, commercial banking team leader.

Bench Mark Program provides a continuum of care through a range of programs that support youths in the detention center, in the probation department, within their schools and in their community. It recently moved to a new, expanded facility at 102 S. Prince St., Lancaster. Bench Mark worked with Fulton Bank for financing to support renovation of its new facility. A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster

are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”

Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.

The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the

Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as

Conducted by Kathleen Ebling Shaw, the 15-member choir is composed of undergraduate and graduate students at Westminster Choir College and other students at Rider University. The choir uses eight octaves of handbells. Many of the bells are made of bronze, and they range in weight from 4 ounces to 11 pounds. The choir also uses the large Basso Profundo aluminumcast bells that are a new phenomenon in handbell ringing. The choir supplements its handbell set with a sixoctave set of Malmark Choirchime instruments.

The group’s holiday performances have been heard annually on National Public Radio’s “Performance

Today,” and the choir has performed at Carnegie Hall twice during the Christmas season. Most recently, the choir joined singer Josh Groban, appearing at NBC’s nationally televised lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

“Despite the Storm: A Reflection on Hope, Perseverance and Resilience.” The ensemble will perform original works, transcriptions of light classics, hymn tunes, folk tunes and more.

In keeping with the Starlight Tea tradition, tea and cookies will be served following the concert.

In the event of an over-

flow crowd, the concert will be livestreamed to the church’s chapel.

The free concert series is supported by patrons and freewill offerings received at concerts. Lancaster COB is located at 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. For more information, contact planning committee chair Giny Mackey at 717-201-8450.

As Salvatore explained, the SNHA bucket list runs throughout the year. It includes seasonal activities and events, as well as year-round activities to explore. “Participants can share their bucket list experience by snapping photos, posting them to social media and tagging @susqNHA in the post,” she noted. If participants complete at least five items and submit their information on the SNHA website, they can receive an SNHA sticker.

SNHA started the bucket list idea to keep people in the region busy during the pandemic in 2020. The list focused specifically on Columbia that year and then branched out to include the river towns of

Marietta and Wrightsville the following year. Last year was the first time the organization launched a bucket list covering the entire region. Salvatore came up with the tasks on the list, noting that they are engineered to explore partners and sites offering a diverse mix of heritage, culture, recreation and refreshments unique to the region. A collaborative effort with the SNHA staff narrowed down the final 55 activities, she said, noting that number was chosen because the region is the 55th designated National Heritage Area.

“I would encourage residents to rediscover and learn new things about the region, using the Susquehanna National Heritage Area bucket list,” Salvatore remarked. “The bucket list tasks open conversations about our collective past and create fun talking points with visitors to the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and Zimmerman Center for Heritage. It’s an interesting way for visitors to understand the national connections this region has woven throughout history.”

A digital version of the list can be found at www.susqnha.org. Paper copies are also available at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.

Honrade named Player of the Week

Louise Honrade, a studentathlete at Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville, received a conference Player of the Week award for her recent performance in tennis. She is a graduate of Manheim Township High School.

Honrade, of Lititz, was tabbed Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Player of the Week on March 14.

Honrade went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles to lead the Dutchmen to a 2-0 week in Hilton Head, S.C. LVC defeated Gordon 7-2 and then beat Roanoke 6-3. Honrade won both her No. 1 singles matches with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gordon to begin the week and then a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Roanoke. In doubles, she teamed with Meredith Haas and dropped a tough 8-6 decision against Gordon before finishing the week with an 8-2 victory with Sarah Kramer against Roanoke.

Honrade is pursuing a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Physical Therapy in exercise science and physical therapy at LVC.

Medical students learn placements

On March 17, soon-to-be graduates of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) learned their residency placements during the National Resident Matching Program’s Match Day. Match Day is an event at which all fourth-year medical students around the country simultaneously open their envelopes to learn where they will spend the next three to seven years training in their chosen specialty.

Celebrating a successful match were Luke McDonald of Lancaster and Natalie Rothenberger of Lititz. McDonald matched into neurology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Rothenberger matched into urology at the University of Washington.
